It’s only a joke run if you declare it sometime before during or slightly after, or it’s extremely obvious, like Kosmics Super Mario Bros coke and pizza %
But he probably got way more excitement and this money, from doing a "blind run". My guess is his time wasn't very good so he just decided to fake a blinded run. The weird thing is he could go and learn blind strats to at least make it look legit. But he just uses normal strats which he's decently good at to cheat the run. It's bizarre.
Key word is "fine," he was probably never going to be top tier Mario 64 runner (it's a very popular category), and apparently he wasn't fine with just running a game for the fun of it... So he tried to be the best at something he's only "fine" at when no blindfolds are involved.
This guy appearing out of nowhere in the community and suddenly being able to do things no other person has done while blindfolded, when he himself has said he hasn't practiced, is the equivalent of someone coming off the streets and being an NBA caliber basketball player despite the fact that he's blind
I love his reaction to being called out. It's an extremely long and awkward pause where he desperately tries to think of a way to get 50 bucks is unable to, then desperately tries to not out himself as a cheater and comes up with the genius idea of saying no in a way that it sounds like he is just realising he has the ability to say no.
The things is, if he'd admitted to it being a joke right after finishing the game on stream, it would've been funny. He could've said "I totally got you all!" to his viewers, congratulated the people in chat who saw through the BS and then taken everyone through bits ofw the run and pointed out how ridiculous it was to think he was blindfolded. Everyone would've laughed and he could've kept his credibility, perhaps even gaining new fans. The fact it was only "a joke" after being disproven proves that it was never a joke. It makes sense that there's a lot of cheating - there is an inflation of people doing speedrunning in general, so naturally you're also going to come across more bad apples. If anything, it's a good thing that people are able to catch these cheaters because the alternative scenario is that they're never caught and idiots like this go under the radar and have illegitimate times on the leaderboards
the fact ppl are saying wats wrong and showing the evidence also helps them hide better if they fully know what they should hide which at some point kinda worths more to legit, but still some cheaters have indeed prospered, they havent been found
@@isaakyhsialf4369 yeah but at one point there is so much they can do to hide it if more and more people knows about the cheats , it becomes a question if its even worth it to put all the effort. But still , as you said , there mist be some fake runs still up there unfortunately . I have been looking at some videos catching fake runs and some of them are 10 years old , due to not having the means at the time to figure out some of the cheats that we have now , and probably will still happen in the future where we will find that some of the present runs are actuallu faked.
The issue is twofold - first more people are entering speedrunning, so there's a larger pool of players, it following that you will have more cheaters. But also as speedrunning becomes more popular, the perceived "clout" of having a verified run is increased, increasing the incentive towards cheating. It should be expected that after passing a certain critical mass, speedrunning will experience massive increases in cheating.
@@CuriousKey indeed. i hope the moderators and/or the judges will employ more means to cover the increases in speedrunners. hiring more to cover a largercrowd.
@@ZelosSama There are potential issues there too - if for example it ever becomes the case that the verifying institution makes money from traffic (ads, donations etc) then you already have an incentive for them to accept highly popular runs, regardless of whether they are faked. This has already been an issue in the past - "celebrities" in speedrunning have been subject to far looser standards due to the crowd they draw. So I say it's about more than having merely enough moderation, you also need moderation that has no incentive towards capitulation.
The best thing for him to have done is just genuinely apologize for his actions and promise to never do this again but of course this isn’t how he handled it
These people should be marked permanently on their twitch accounts as "verified cheater" ....I hate that people can do this without consequence and gain money and views by dishonoring a whole community. I''m not even part of the speed running community but I feel bad for the people who put in hard work to have to put up with this.
Agreed! Steam does it if you're caught cheating. You'll get a permanent VAC or EAC ban stamp put right on your profile page for everyone to see. Pretty sure it can still be seen even if you private the profile.
100x no. The guy literally didn't do anything that should be punishable by anyone but the speedrun community, and ONLY if he tried to submit this as a blindfolded run to leaderboards. Marking someone, who's crime really boils down to "lying" as a cheater opens a can of worms in terms of moderating on Twitch I don't even want to imagine. Lying about being blindfolded on its own is less of a cheat than using console commands. If this guy is to be marked cheater, then we run into situations like this. Someone claims they climbed the solo/duo q ladder on their own, but duo'd for 50 games out of their 1000 games, randomly strewn about. By your "rule" they would have to be marked a cheater, for what, lying about not duo q'ing for 5% of their games? Does everyone now have to verify every single claim they make down to the exactness and keep hard records just to not be marked a "cheater"? Is it now going to be a Twitch crime if someone has to look up 2 things in a 40 hour JRPG and then claimed to have beaten it without a guide? I would say that they did mostly do that, but under your rule, they have lied against a claim they made and are now a cheater. This isn't about him, things like this are bigger than him, don't let one idiot who fooled a bunch of idiots make you think of equally idiotic ideas for moderation. He is cheating only by the arbitrary rules created by the speedrun community, and lying about it. IF, and i do mean if since I don't know for sure, he didn't even submit a score, then there's nothing here that should be even remotely actionable outside of people calling him out on lying. Calling this cheating would be the equivilant of saying you have a huge dick, a girl you sleeping with finds out its puny, and for the rest of your life you have to wear a shirt calling yourself mr micropenis.
I watched one speed runner doing a run on Bloodborne blindfolded. He plays the game a lot and really loves it and that was his first time trying it. How can you not tell that he’s just using a see through blindfold and that it’s not prerecorded? The way he reacts irl to exact movements is impossible if he was actually blindfolded in front of a prerecorded run
Most of that chat is bots, namely someone named 'Joey Millie'. It's edited out of the video, but when the guy is "reading chat," what actually happens is one of his mods reposted a chat message with a bit attached so it would go through text-to-speech and he responds to that. This guy is dumb, but not "reading chat while supposedly blindfolded" dumb.
He should just make his alert noise the sound of Mario taking damage, that wouldn't confuse him at all in this blindfolded run. I tried playing Sonic 2 blindfolded, sure there's setups but so many little things can go wrong and you end up totally disoriented trying to work out where you are and where to go, it's guesswork and dying so you can try from a known location is usually best, you don't miss an object and know whether you were long or short or by how much, especially in a 3D game, you aren't correcting any mistake, let alone making little adjustments.

Hey, wait, yeah! He’s trying to say all this stuff about how he’s so good, it’s all muscle memory, and then he also feels the need to say there are audio cues that he uses. Not to mention that he’s screaming over those audio cues...
His excuse when he was called out was that it was a joke run, yeah sure it was buddy

i can't believe how idiotic this guy is
Sucks for him because now ALL of his runs are joke runs
The saddest part is he's actually taken the time to learn speedrunning tricks & strats. He would've been fine just working on his basic 16 star run.

I loved the "apology" which was pretty much "of course it was fake, I'm just having fun~ it's YOUR fault if you got fooled"
He *actually* went the Schrödinger's comedian route and decided after the fact that it was a Joke™
A joke is revealed to be a joke by the comedian, not exposed by others.

@@sweethysteria8737 yeah, basically the same 10 or so people saying the same generic comments (most of which have nothing to do with the speedrun/stream itself), they have to be bots.
there are like 3 dudes who doubted the legit of this run on the chat
1 of them even challenge the player with 50$ (yunlele or something)
1 of them kept spamming about how impossible the run is (leonardo da something)

I agree. Cheaters like this guy should be blacklisted
That alone isn't enough. Perma ban and the verified cheater mark sounds good though
