One of the oldest requests I have seen over the years would be to cover the Batman Arkham Franchise. I have wanted to do it from the beginning, but only now have I finally gotten around to it. Today we are tackling the first game, Batman Arkham Asylum, and seeing what made it such a standout hit. Next week will be Arkham City, and so on and so forth.

Everytime i see a new Super Hero game come out i always see people comparing it to the Batman Arkham games,this really shows how these games are just "The Super Hero Game"
Exactly 💯. The Batman Arkham Series set the Gold standard and is used as a measuring stick for future Superhero games to be compared to.
Kevin Conroy's story in life being the basis on how he developed the Batman voice was one of the most hearbreaking and inspirational things I've ever learned about him.
That's what pride month should highlight. LGBT people who've done amazing things like that. I can't think of any 90s kid or beyond who hasn't been moved by his portrayal of batman

@@CactusCJ DC did a pride month comic one year where Kevin wrote a short about his struggles, and it was how he officially and publicly came out. It's a FANTASTIC issue and Kevin was (and still posthumously is) an absolute legend.

Not gonna lie, I cried for about 3 days straight when I found out we lost Kevin Conroy. That man was and is the sole reason Batman is my favorite superhero. Anytime i read a Batman comic I read it in his voice, same with Mark Hamill as Joker who just so happens to be my favorite villain of all time lol. Those two transcended my childhood so hearing them both back in this game had just let me know I was already gonna love it. Not to mention BTAS came out 3 months after I was born so the show is literally the same age as me, well it will be come October. But yeah I always get a laugh when people ask me who my favorite Batman is and I respond with "Kevin Conroy" and then they're like "Who"? But the ones who agree with me we suddenly become good buddies lol.

I love the entire Arkham series. When I was younger, the scariest part to play was the Killer Croc level. It still is to this day.

The bane hide and seek in origins was way scarier
The Predator Mode gameplay is so good, that I'm honestly amazed that there hasn't been an actual _Predator_ game made using them. Feels like a major missed opportunity
Not a predator game but AvP on the PC. Never console. AvP on pc. You could play as;
Alien - easy difficulty mode
Predator- medium difficulty
Marine - hard difficulty
The predator and alien modes are a blast. It came out late 90s. 96 -99
Playing as the marine is horrific. One of the few games that genuinely terrifies you. Would live to play this game again

I've played this the most out of the Arkham games and still haven't fatigued from it.
The Arkham series truly deserves all its success and status. It gets so many important things right on very high levels
Its definitely because of the much more polished level design, as opposed to the open world structure in Arkham nightmare

@@smashmaster521 yeah , if only the handcrafted levels, then I agree, but I speak for not only for Arkham knight, but for all open world structured games. I really dont get the appeal, for the design, especially if its mostly just empty space without any meaningful engagement.
While I'm not the best at playing it, I love this game so much. It's the game that proved Batman games could be awesome, reunited the best Batman and Joker voices, perfectly blended stealth and combat, and gave Screcrow respect and mainstream attention he deserves.

Arkham Asylum was one of the first PS3-era games I ever played and it changed something in me. Just so beautifully cinematic, well-written, exceptionally voice acted, and so endlessly fun to play. It's the gold standard for superhero video games and the only comparable franchise so far is Insomniac's Spider-Man series, and that clearly takes cues from this one.
You know, a character that has always stood out to me these games in particular is The Riddler. Honestly in my opinion these games have the best depiction of The Riddler outside the comics. Wally Wingert who voiced the character in all 4 games always delivered such an incredible performance that always managed to perfectly capture Riddler's obsessive personality, massive ego and superiority complex. It's honestly his voice Ihear in my head whenever I read comics with Riddler with them.
My only real complaint with the riddler is the amount of effort you have to go through to complete his story and I don’t think the payoff is really that worth it. Especially in asylum when all we get is the transmission of the police firing the riddler and arresting him.
Kevin Conroy made our childhoods so much fun with all of his amazing work. I did some research on him and was amazed at how he overcame so much adversity in his life which ultimately helped him shape his voice to voice Batman. He was a hero to so many people in real-life, especially the story of about when he volunteered to cook for first responders after 9/11. He shouted his famous line from the kitchen and everyone was shocked and they cheered for him. He was not led by money of greed, he truly cared about others and embraced the role of Batman. He wasn’t the hero we deserved, but the hero we needed.
Thank you for everything you did for us Kevin. You will forever be our Dark Knight. Rest In Peace. ❤
As someone who's played the ENTIRE OG trilogy, you are correct J! The Arkham games are considered iconic within the industry for many damn good reasons. They have it all, gameplay, lore, voice-acting, plot etc. The Arkham games is just one of those series that you can truly impacted the landscape of superhero games. 2009's Asylum blow peoples minds, and 2011's City raised that bar higher! What I'm saying is that you're in for a treat my man!
Despite its flaws, it’s my favorite out of the Arkham series due to the atmosphere and the fact that it’s really just another night for Batman unlike the other games which had world changing consequences.
Man the amount of times I replayed this game. Such a classic.
My mind is cursed to think of Conker's bad fur day when I hear "context sensitive."

This game - along with the rest - brings back so many memories 😊 I remember first seeing the 4th wall break during the third Scarecrow encounter and finding the hidden room in the Warfen's Office, teasing what'a to come in the sequel.

Playing this game for the first time was a life changing experience for me, at the time the game seemed to be unmatched and still seems so with it's atmosphere!
I remember it being said that this game was the game that finally helped break the trend of many licensed games being seen as awful right out of the gate.
I recently played through all 4 Arkham games and Asylum is my absolute favorite of them all. Yes parts of it aren't as good as the sequels and the boss fights are repetitive, but that smaller, tighter level design was always something I preferred over the larger maps of the sequels/prequel.
Yeah I think I agree with you here. It felt very focused in a way the open world titles never felt for me. For me it's one of the top Metroidvania titles ever made, I can still revisit it and have a great time.
I started the arkham series in the mid 2010s and I sucked at it but years later it is one of my favorite game series and I am so good at them now

Asylum is my favorite among the Arkham series, A chilling atmosphere topped with engaging gameplay throughout.
I remember as a kid going into gamestop and seeing the back of the box and giving me said chills.
When this game was announced, I was cautious about how the is is gonna be a legitimate video game, set in a singular location, then I got it for Christmas alongside Uncharted 2 and I was pleasantly surprised by what they did with it
What made me realize that this game was to be taken serious and not disregard it as some cash grab was when the devs had pushed the release date to a later date which was unheard of for a superhero game.
To me the Arkham Series (not so much Origins) is one of the greatest video game series of all time. I wish I could forget everything about the game just so I could go back and re-experience them again for the first time.
Origins' biggest problem is that it's filler. Beyond that, the game plays just as well as the other entries...Just make sure you've gotten the patch for Origins on 360.
@@smashmaster521 That’s what I mean though it was just filler, played almost identical to Arkham City but it didn’t push the story further it just attempted to retell stuff that we kinda already knew and didn’t necessarily need to be told. By no means was a bad game just felt like it wasn’t really needed.

@@Gamfluent Theres nothing bandwagon about it, the Spiderman games are a carbon copy of the Arkham games the difference being Batman and Spiderman have different abilities but gameplay wise it’s very clear Insomniac took nearly evety aspect of the Arkham games into consideration when making their own game and just fit it to Spiderman mans world a abilities. The combat, the traversal, the open world, side content, like literally everything. Not to say Spiderman isn’t it’s own game but the Arkham games influence is blatantly all of them and that’s not a bad thing at all.

I like how the villains that are just alluded to in Asylum are the bosses in City, and that Asylum bosses are not the main focus.

They should do Arkham World, which is open world and you can visit other cities like Metropolis and Star City and team up with other DC heroes and stuff.

I remember as a kid I played on one of my friends Xbox in 2011 and found a Batman game called Arkham asylum and completely enjoy it and even bought it for my 360 then played city year later Fr my child hood😢😢😢

I played this game a good ways back when I was 7.
I hardly cared for the story but I loved the combat.
One thing I despise now is that gliding does not have inverted controls.
That and chaining combos is a little hard if they are less than 3 feet from Batman.
Aside from that, it holds up nicely.

I’m not much of a fan of Batman in this universe, mainly because of the direction they took being pretty different from the DC Animated Universe, but they still have Kevin Conroy play him (I feel like Dunkey put it best in his Arkham City video from a while back). It’s like with Optimus Prime for me, where it’s neat that they have the character’s iconic VA that many people grew up with, but for me, it doesn’t hit the same spot as their performance in those shows either because of their age affecting their performance, or the way the character is written making them sound and act different (might be a combination of both) which makes me miss the earlier versions of their character.
Yeah, Arkham Batman is much colder, and Kevin Conroy nails that with his performance. Unfortunately, the result is that Kevin Conroy seems like he's phoning it in at points due to how emotionless Arkham Batman comes off as.

I think this game may have been surpassed by better superhero games over time but I think this game will always be my favorite of the genre regardless of what came before or even what comes after

FINALLY, THE CONTENT I BEEN WANTING!!!
Some of the voice acting choices are amazing. Aside from Conroy, Hamill, and Sorkin, you had Danny Jacobs (King Julian from Madagascar) as Victor Zazz, Wally Wingert (Renji Abarai from Bleach) as The Riddler, and Tasia Valenza (Sniper Wolf from Metal Gear Solid) as Poison Ivy.

I Grew up with this Game as well. I even have the Xbox 360 Disk. I always failed to play it because I was a Little Child. Not a Person who could actually beat the game. But then one Day I actually did play it the right way. And I got Far. But the Game Glitched at the Elevator in the Hospital part. And it did that constantly at the one Part.
But one Day I realized. "Wait. Could I try cleaning the Disk?" So I did. I got past the Elevator and I enjoyed the Game. I realized I was Missing out on a Lot of Stuff. Eventually I got Return to Arkham for both of Asylum and City. I also got Arkham Knight. But I got Knight before the Return to Arkham. This is all happening recent. I'm 17.
And I was maybe 15 when I finally beat Arkham Asylum. But that Glitch happened back when I was 9 or 10 I think. Yea. It's been a long time coming. But a Year ago I finally played City. I Played Knight I believe before getting City and I beat it. I was Happy. And I 100% Completed it. It felt Amazing. But I never got to Play the DLC because of (Coughs) Money (Coughs) Sorry.
Just had a little Cough. But then I played City and Asylum on my Xbox One and I felt Amazing. I have nearly 100% Completed the Both of them. Asylum. That's because of the Challenge Maps. I struggle with those. City. My God. I will never be able to 100% Complete it. But I eventually got around to playing Arkham Origins. And I have gotten to the "I Am The Night" Mode.
I've nearly beat it. Multiple times. So you can tell how many times I've wanted to throw my Xbox One Controller into the Wall at Dying at something Stupid. It makes me Cry each time. Because the Farthest I've gotten. Is Blackgate. As in 99% almost done with the Campaign. Then I accidentally fall into the Electric Water. So I lose Everything. It's Sad.
But I'll most likely never get that Far again. It's Sad. The Pain. But it's Enjoyable nonetheless. I've gotten addicted to Playing Origins. It's the Real reason I got that Far. I have No Life.
But I found each of the Arkham Games Enjoyable. It's the Real Reason I play the Campaign Over and over and over and over. I have an Addiction. Funny enough. The Arkham Games is the Reason why my Channel has Blown up. I've gotten a lot of Subscribers because of the Arkham Games. Mostly Asylum but you get the Idea. I have no Life. I have no Life beyond the Arkham Games

The glitch part of scared tf outta me more than any scary game ever has ngl. I played this from today literally a week ago brand new never knowing anything about the games. Steam had the trilogy on sale and today I just beat City although I still need riddler and Harley’s revenge. Batman himself made me feel like I could literally handle anything like the killer croc area him saying what you mentioned literally took all fear away whereas other games you sometimes have that “getting chased” feeling. With Batman it truly was just another animal

Picked up this game and arkham city for $6 so gonna play through them again. I was blown away at how great these games still look.
I got the platinum trophy for this game not to long ago and I’m really impressed by how good this games still is. I just love how the horror elements builds the atmosphere of Arkham islands and I honestly think that all of the sequels (and prequel) have a worse atmosphere than this game even though they are better in a lot of other aspects

I had the Arkham Asylum intercom sound as my message tone on my phone for years.
Asylum for me holds a special place because it was the first game I EVER platinumed, along with me scoring top 10 in one of the combat challenges for the time (the one with the electric floor).
I still remember seeing this game in GameInformer, I didn't know who Batman was at the time but the info on it got me really interested in wanting to play it. I finally got to years later when I got really into Batman and got both Goty for AA and AC for the PS3
The only problem I had with this awesome game was that boss fights had continuous waves of henchmen otherwise it was perfection 👌

I will always love this games atmosphere of being trapped in Arkham and being truly stuck with the insane, it reminds me of the common plot points in Batman media of "Batman being just as insane as all of the others"
Nothing to do with the video, but I remember one time my sister and I were talking about how a John Wick game would play. My choice was obviously Batman: Arkham with guns and pencils because of course that's how it would play; he's a hitman on a hitmission, so an action stealth game would obviously be something that could fit his story pretty well. Their choice was Bayonetta because of the movies' spectacle; I mean, Wick is played by Keanu Reeves, but I think spectacle fighter gameplay makes a Hell of a lot more sense for a Matrix game.

I played this game so much in my younger years and it was so good that i asked my mom to get me new discs of the game since it would often have a scratched disc(about 3 discs)
I would play it over and over because it was THAT damn good all around
I still have it alongside Arkham City but this time, i have it digitally and i play it from time to time for the Challenge maps

I remember loving the demo but at the time wasn't branching outside too much with my gaming habits so I wasn't looking to pick it up. Luckily there was a local CD/DVD/game store that would sell used games for absurdly low prices, they had a copy of Arkham Asylum about a week after release for half price so it was a no brainer. One of the best games of it's generation and helped show how to take great advantage of Batman in a gaming environment.

I replayed it recently (return to Arkham) and in the library where you drop the large chandelier on the floor there’s a large group of thugs to fight when you first enter. I tried to see if you can bypass them by grappling straight up to the floor where you enter the ceiling. Surprisingly you can but you can’t drop the chandelier on them. Joker just berate them for letting you escape and tells them to just leave the room
To me, the entire PS3-era is perfectly embodied by this game -- and I mean that in the best way possible.
Arkham Asylum came out in 2009 and 2009 was a stacked year for video games.

Fyi pretty sure the only time you can punch-fly toward an enemy on the ground is when they are getting up. It's subtle but it's there

The Batman games go on sale in the Xbox store all the time. Also with the new enhanced versions of the Xbox, the games look fantastic. You also get the dlc. I was playing as joker not too long ago, had a blast!

It wasn’t Arkham, but it was damn good.
Solid combat, a fear mechanic to spook goons, stealth, gadgets.
Not to mention the amount of unlockable suits you could play in.
