The Last of Us Did What Uncharted Failed To Do

  • Naughty Dog's Uncharted and The Last of Us have both received the live-action treatment in recent years, but one was met with a far more enthusiastic response from the audience...but why is that? This video sets out to explore why the Uncharted Movie got a more lukewarm response and why The Last of Us was one of the biggest shows of the year. While also giving my in-depth thoughts on both, as a fan of both.

The absolute highlight of that Uncharted fan film you mentioned with Nathan Filian, was when they briefly had the camera pan the same way it does in the games, and even have Nathan do a mimmick of his in-game animations! Details like that just never seem to make it into these..."professional movies".

I think that the difference in the cameos in both, the show and the movie, is a great microcosm of the difference in approach to both properties.
The show gives the actors actual characters to play. They aren't given focus simply cuz the gamers would like this reference! The camera focuses on their characters when it is appropriate for their characters to have it. Baker, Johnson, and Pierce were given thought-out, well-integrated roles to play with (didn't count Dandridge as she plays the same character, I wouldn't count it as a cameo). They all have moments to shine (Baker: the first scene with David, downing Ellie's horse, that awesome death. Johnson: that entire scene is just fucking phenomenal and emotional af. Pierce: you can tell that he trained for this part just by the way his character moves. That really comes through in that action setpiece). If someone knows who they are, it's fun for them & they can enjoy another performance from them. If they don't, they just continue watching the show as one would. There's substance to these characters, no cheap nudge & a wink to the audience.
Nolan North's cameo in the Uncharted movie is quite literally a nudge & a wink to the gaming audience. The movie stops in its track for like a minute or so to randomly meet this man who makes vague references to being in a similar situation. It's fun for those who know, sure. But I HAVE to imagine that the general audience was probably a little confused by that. There isn't a character for North, who is a terrific actor, to play. Just a part of some extra. No substance. Just a nudge and a wink to the audience.
I didn't need the movie to give North some BIG part. But they could've given him something more, something more interesting.

When I watched this on theater, there's a couple who also watches with me. The girl confused at North cameo and her bf needs to explain "He's the one who voiced and acted as Nate in game. Nate also go through these in games"
At that moment I know it isn't good cameo and Nolan North deserved better. Them eliminating Elena and didn't even include Emily Rose cameo (maybe because of schedule issue or other things?) was also terrible choice. They didn't even care about source material

I never thought of Nathan Drake as a city boy. Everytime you see him in some form of down time within the games, he's at some beach side bar. The only context of Nate living a normal life is in Uncharted 4, where the point is that Nate is no longer treasure hunting.
In Uncharted 1, there's a scene where Elena puts her hand up to signify "scout's honor", which is a boy scouts gesture. Nate says "whatever that means" which gives off the impression that Nate is not a normal person. So to see him ride in a New York subway and work a night shift at a bar, it almost felt insulting seeing such a rugged character get turned into a civilian.
I would have preferred if the movie started with the implication that he was already on a treasure hunt, like how Uncharted 1 opens with him already opening up a coffin from the ocean.

Bringing back Gustavo Santaolalla for the score. His score for the games is so unique, calming but also filled with tension and melancholy. The new stuff David Fleming brought to the table was great to, bringing most of the tension of the moments in the show like when the outbreak occurs in Texas.

I was not opposed to following the adventures of a younger Nathan Drake. But the thing is that they should've made the Uncharted movie long ago, featuring an age-appropriate Nathan, with Bryan Cranston as Sully. Should've done it right after BrBa for a general audience interest boost.
In an article for the New Yorker, Druckmann said this about the Uncharted movie: “At some point, I think we (folks over at Naughty Dog) just said, ‘You guys run with it, because we can’t keep investing time in this.'"
And I fully get that. After the movie being stuck in development hell since 2008 and with countless actors, writers, and directors coming and going, and the execs CLEARLY not caring about the games or what the creators have to say (when Uncharted was optioned, Naughty Dog had ceded considerable creative control)... one can only do so much.

I've always said the first thing that made the game worthwhile is playable action sequences (which is the point most people get) but there's a second important thing: the characters (people seem to forget this one). The movie dropped the ball on both of those. They should have known they couldn't do the action sequences justice and focused more on getting the characters right.

What uncharted did (as many disney live action remakes) was change the core of things. Like something worked and now u get rid off the soul of it all and then u wonder why its not popular like the original? Well yeah no shit.

Was there anything you thought the HBO show just straight up did worse than the game?
Episode 6 may well have been my favorite if not for the university segment, just felt it was so rushed in the show. The rebar is unrealistic but I thought the game did a far better job of showing how injured Joel is. Ellie has to prop him up, your vision's all blurred and you can see the shitton of blood that Joel's lost.
In comparison, the show ends about a minute after Joel gets stabbed with an incredibly poor choice of credits music seeing the episode out. That bit especially doesn't compare in my opinion.

    • @JsReviews
      @JsReviews  11 місяців тому +3

Hard for me to say. I think I just generally prefer the game overall. The game can just take more time and build things up slower. I do think your point about Episode 6 made sense. But there aren’t a ton of things that come to my mind when I think of what the game did better, when I just like the overall experience of playing the game more.

    • @Telos1807

@@JsReviews I think those who played the game first are always going to prefer it. I like Pascal as Joel and god knows I love Bella as Ellie but they're always going to be second place for me.
I'd actually say I don't think there are too many things I think the show did better or worse than the game. Most things land in a grey area - I loved the complete rewriting of Bill's story but wouldn't want it to replace what was in the game, it's nice to have the different approaches provided it stays true to the soul of the original and doesn't go the way of the Netflix Witcher.

    • @SidPhoenix2211
      @SidPhoenix2211 11 місяців тому +1

Yeah, that end credits music (while beautifully sung) doesn't quite fit. Using a somber track from the game or just using silence would've been better (For ex: didn't like the insert of Joel & Sarah in ep. 1. Either just include the shot of that soldier's flashlight and then cut to Joel in the present, or don't have it at all. I LOVED the insert of Joel & Sarah's hands decorating the tree. I didn't like the insert of Sarah's face that followed). I have a couple other nitpicks of editing choices here and there, but largely I LOVED the show. I kinda agree on your "gray area" sentiment in your other comment.
I am not one for comparisions. Especially since these are two different mediums. I'd rather focus on what they do well, what were some missteps etc. To me, the game is the game and the show is the show. They are different experiences and I engage with them differently. Which is a GOOD THING. It's like reading, say, the Harry Potter books vs. watching the movies. Both had their own appeal, were fun, and I found different things to enjoy in both.
I especially don't like comparing Joel & Ellie's two sets of performers. To me... Both performances are excellent and serve their respective project well. I didn't go into the show hoping to find Pascal & Ramsey be better or worse than Baker & Johnson. I went in simply hoping to see a fresh take on the characters that I love DEEPLY, hoping that they still maintained the core of these characters. And I got that in spades. I walked out of the show not with a ranked list, but rather with a deeper love for the characters of Joel & Ellie & this story, if that makes sense.

Music is such a key element to why the game is loved. Certain scenes just dont hit as hard in the tv show because of it e.g. end of david's section, it also loses the survival aspect of story because there's not enough infected very good adaption considering my nitpicks.

Both were because of the quality and approach of their adaptation methods.
The Uncharted Film tried too hard to be a Hollywood blockbuster that it felt so wrong by those who have actually played the games and seen the characters. In addition, the set pieces were very "greatest hits" in terms of feel, like they only did them just to do CG action scenes, finale included.
The Last of Us Show had better direction towards what to expand upon while keeping the identity and feel of the story intact, which is a rarity in Hollywood.

Everything is good, but just doesn’t stand out. It definitely didn’t make me want to play the games, but I wouldn’t avoid them either.
As for the Last of Us,I played both games and really enjoyed the show, but I actually prefer the bitter sweet ending of Frank’s story in the game, I think episode 3 is a little over hyped. It’s good but I don’t see why people think it’s the greatest thing ever, and as I said I prefer the games version highlighting the harshness of this world and setting…and frankly Frank would be awful to live with. With all that said though, the show is excellent, and maybe a little frustrating watching week to week, but excellent on a binge.

The only quote of mine that sounds vaguely like that is when I talked about how Pontac and Graff were not familiar with Sonic before working on it and how people sending them hate over video games were losers. I said that being familiar with a series isn’t a requirement to work on it because in the industry, that’s often how it works. Guest writers come on, write for one episode or whoever many and that’s it. But that it’s up to the show runners to know what they are doing to make sure things are consistent, something Sega failed at. In this video I make the claim that the best video game adaptations are by people who know and like the Material but aren’t so big of fanboys that they won’t make change.

The Uncharted movie was okay, I think it was because I had such low expectations for it that when I saw it, it kinda met that expectation. I do think the script for the movie should've been worked on better, maybe adapt and fix up the story of the first game mix with the flashbacks about Sam. And I also think it was the casting of Nate and Sully that really had me baffled. I like Tom and Mark but they weren't Nate and Sully. Everytime Tom came on screen I kept thinking this isn't Nathan Drake, this is Peter Parker.
As for the Last of Us show....ugh. I could go on about my thoughts on the show but it would be too long so this is my stance on it in one sentence "it was so mediocre that it was disappointing."

Simply put, I think nothing of Sonic 2 other than it being an entertaining kids film that was fun to watch as an adult too. It being a better Sonic Movie was also a nice perk. I can’t say a movie with a 15 minute wedding slapstick scene is the best video game adaptation. It’s a fun silly movie, but it’s nothing more than that. Enjoyed the Mario movie more.

I feel its worth addressing how much better TLOU adapted its brand compared to not just Uncharted, but even Mario in that same year. Mario was no doubt successful and a cultural phenomenon in the Animation department, but what made Mario so successful was just its branding and advertisement of the Mario franchise. Remove all that, and you would get an Illumination movie that still boarders of the generic kiddy bullshit their best known for. TLOU was an achievement that proved how to tell an amazing story while staying true to its original source material. The important thing about any Game to Movie adaptation, is focusing on the appeal of the audience and creating a compelling story BEFORE adapting the source material and references

The Uncharted movie could have been truly great, but Sony Pictures as a Studio is an utter joke. Outside Spider-Man, they can't do jackshit, and even then they also screw over their Spider-Man projects, if it wasn't for Marvel Studios and Phil Lord and Christopher Miller they would already be out.

  • @chrisrowe2308

Uncharted was never going to be a huge success as a film. The games were always deliberately over the top and filled with throw backs to Indiana Jones and 80's/90's action movie tropes. By the 2nd game they added some Mission Impossible style sequences and the rest is history.

      1. it doesn't have a 100 on Rotten Tomatoes. It has a 96. The score falls to 91% when you filter the review by "top critics"
      2. Those aggregate numbers on RT do not mean that this thing is 96%/91% good. It just means that out of all the reviews that the site counted (from trusted and verified sources), 96% of all critics (and 91% of top critics) gave it a favourable review. Now, this can range from "it is worth watching" to "fun enough" to "a really good, well-made show" to "a truly great tv show". Think of it as 90%+ critics giving it a numerical rating that fell in the range of 6.5/7-10
