There's that part where they both running on opposite sides of the fence towards each other in complete silence that just looks "un-cinematic" compared to the rest of the movie, but in a cinematic way (if that makes sense) that has always been my favourite part of the fight scene. It just looks so raw and real.

And yes BJ, the yellow jumpsuit is an homage to Brue Lee. He wore that in "Game of Death" which he was filming but had not completed when he died in 1973. It was later completed and released in '76. They used a stand in and even a cardboard cutout to finish Bruce's role. Fortunately the fight scenes were pretty much done before he died.

    • @kev7161
      @kev7161 Рік тому +7

And of course the music playing while she was riding the yellow motorcycle was the theme music to the Green Hornet TV show, in which Bruce Lee co-starred (playing Kato).

The man in the sushi bar playing Hattori Hanzo is legendary action/martial arts film star Sonny Chiba, who passed away in August, 2021. If you've never seen The Street Fighter series of films, they're almost required watching for appreciating 70s cinema. The background music playing when O-Ren marches into The House Of Blue Leaves is by Tomayasu Hotei, entitled Battle Without Honor Or Humanity (also the title of a 1973 film starring Chiba).

**SPOILER FREE** To explain some of the story for those who are still confused:
    1. This is filmed out of order. In chronological time, the first person she went after was Oren, remember she said she was the easiest to find.
    2. As people have stated, they were all assassins who worked for Bill. So basically these were work friends who betrayed her, that's how Vernita knew about the coffee and other small stuff.
    3. Vernita knew she was coming to try and kill her because of Bill. Remember, The bride went after Oren, and had that one lady tell Bill everything, so he went to warn everyone, including Vernita.
    4. There are more answers to some questions that are played out in vol 2, so please no one spoil anything!

You know you gotta do Vol 2 soon, right? Lol...
Uma Thurman's stunt woman is a New Zealand woman named Zoe Bell. Possibly one of the most famous female stuntwomen. If you want another Quentin Tarantino movie with Zoe Bell literally playing herself, a New Zealand wild stuntwoman named Zoe lol, in another one of his movies, check out "Death Proof". It stars Kurt Russell, Sydney Portier (famous Sidney Portier's daughter), Rosario Dawson, Rose McGowan and others.
But before you watch "Death Proof", you should watch Robert Rodriguez's "Planet Terror". You see, Robert Rodriguez is another known, somewhat wild director and sometimes collaborator with Quentin Tarantino. If you want to check out some of his work, I'd recommend "The Faculty". If you want a Rodriguez/Quentin collab project that was done before this, I'll recommend "From Dusk Til Dawn" (Tarantino wrote and starred in it with George Clooney, while Rodriguez directed it). Another one would be "Sin City", a wild movie based on a graphic comic.
Now the reason to watch "Planet Terror" before "Death Proof" is because they came out TOGETHER. When released in theaters, they were released together as a double feature called "Grindhouse", basically giving you two movies for the price of one. Both movies are supposed to be homages to old, exploitation, low-budget, b-rated movies from the 70s and their whole setup, including the title, is meant to be a nod to the grindhouse theaters that used to play these types of low-budget, b-rated, double features. Planet Terror came on first, with even fake trailers in between and beginning, then Death Proof came out, all in one sitting. They were released separately on DVDs as two separate movies, but there is the theatrical experience version that has all it. I would just recommend watching them separately. They didn't do so well at the box office. I think went in not understand the concept and simply expected the "normal" wild Tarantino and Rodriguez, without understanding the culture of what they were doing their homage to. But I think it's one of those movies that's building a cult following, especially Death Proof (Planet Terror was the more popular of the two when they first came out).
Speaking of Tarantino and paying homage to exploitation films. I also recommend "Jackie Brown", starring one of THE OG action, kick-ass, bad mama jamma. black exploitation film heroine actresses, Pam Grier. One of her most famous films was "Foxy Brown". Tarantino wrote the screenplay for Jackie Brown SPECIFICALLY to have it star Pam Grier, an actress Tarantino admired and enjoyed films of. Just like Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill, it also play with timelines in its storytelling, a different and intriguing way. Samuel L Jackson and many others also star in this film...
Okay, I wrote way too much, but as usual, love y'alls reactions 💛...

    • @jolly1735

Hey, great write-up! They should def find Grindhouse and watch both Planet Terror & Deathproof with the (faux) trailers in between along with olskool intermission graphics. I had the privilege in seeing an advanced theatre screening of Grindhouse and it was the craziest theatre experience of my life! The crowd was in a frenzy...yelling and screaming, throwing popcorn, just wild. The way Grindhouse was constructed just really brought out something in those of us watching. I'll never forget it! (PS Deathproof is amazing).

"Hard top into a convertible" LMFAO!! Thank you BJ. And Asia's reaction to that was PRICELESS.
All your questions/concerns will be answered in Vol. 2 including the wedding scene. Like Pulp Fiction, the timeline jumps around a bit. Without any spoilers, here's what we know. Bill was trained in swordsmanship by Hattori Hanzo. Hanzo was like Obi-Wan Kenobi to Bill, but Bill turned to the dark side and became a high level assassin. Bill formed the 'Deadly Viper Assassination Squad' recruiting 4 women and his brother Budd. Bill (the leader) is 'Snake Charmer', Elle Driver (the nurse in white) AKA 'California Mountain Snake", Vernita Greene AKA 'Copperhead', O-Ren Ishii AKA 'Cottonmouth', Bud AKA 'Sidewinder', and his number one assassin "Black Mamba" (Uma Thurman) who's real name you don't know yet. The point is, yes they all know each other and have worked together. And there is (was) some competition and envy among them.

Go-Go's weapon falls into what is called a soft or flexible class. These weapons are often the equivalent of a retrievable knife or mace and are usually linked to a long rope or chain. I practice the rope dart myself and they are a difficult weapon to defend against. Their drawbacks are they require years and years of training requiring absolute control and are useless in small spaces. The girl who plays her is an actual martial artist which is why she's in control of the timing as she starts spinning it above her head.

I loved (re-)watching this with you guys. And yes, Vol. II is a must-see as the Bride's final confrontation with the object of her revenge unfolds (the pacing of that confrontation takes its time as the culmination of what had been initially intended as a 4-hour-long movie; because Tarantino relishes a taut ramped up scene before bloodshed; and the reveal at the conclusion of Vol. I, which would have been the mid-point if this had been a 4-hour-long movie; had just pointed to much higher stakes that now compels the viewing of Vol. II). In Vol. II, you see more revelations like the rest of her revenge list (in addition to a "new" character, which, like Hattori in Vol. I, I think echoes the theme of redemption), including more of the Bride's back-story and the eventual finale that features a more profoundly life-affirming motivation for her than just revenge.

The Crazy 88 scene is MY FAVORITE!!!! Tarrantino was looking for music for the movie, randomly picked up a cd of the girl band and hired them. O-Ren apologized because she realized too late that The Bride was DEADLY serious.
The Deadly Vipers are all proteges of Bill and a highly trained mercenary kill squad. He recruited each member including Black Mamba. Bill fell for her and she with him but she knew once she was pregnant she needed to get away from that toxic world. She didn't want that influence in her child's life so left hoping Bill would never find her and their baby...oops! She was really close to giving birth at the time of the wedding so it makes sense that with her still alive but in a coma, they would take the baby but of course she wouldn't know of its fate because she didn't stick around to find out.
