    The sushi bar scene with Hatori Hanzo, we get clued in that The Bride speaks Japanese when we see she tries to keep from laughing while Hatori and the assistant are arguing, she understands the whole argument.
    Oren says The Bride won’t last five minutes fighting her: the duel goes 4:59.
    Some of the overseas cuts of the movie show Sophie Fatale with both her arms chopped off, the usually missed “give me your arm” line after The Bride warns Sophie that other parts of her body will be cut off if she does not provide answers.

    8:35 - Tarantino actually confirmed that this guy, who killed O-Ren's dad and burned her house, was Bill himself.
    Also, the yellow suit, which The Bride wore during the battle against O-ren and her people, was a actually a reference to Bruce Lee's "Game of death" movie.

    So, since you talked about the music...one great choice of music was using the song "Flower of Carnage" during the duel between Uma Thurman and Lucy Liu. The song comes from the Japanese 1973 film "Lady Snowblood" - the story of a young woman who was literally born for the purpose of seeking revenge against the criminals who killed her parents. And the song is sung by Meiko Kaji, the star of "Lady Snowblood". It is one of the many, many films that inspired the Kill Bill movies, and setting the duel in the snow and using that music is a direct reference. Here's a traler: ua-cam.com/video/bIiuywU9ZJ4/v-deo.html

      Whooaaa that is awesome!! Thank you so much for including this piece of info! When Uma and Quintin were filming “Pulp Fiction”, they would sit around and talk about the early’70s spaghetti Kung Fu movies and how he always wanted to make one. Uma would say, “Oh! Wouldn’t it be cool if she did this”, and he would say, “Oh, yeah! And wouldn’t it great if this happens,” and that’s how this film came into being. They would brainstorm for hours. They were thinking of a name for the film and Uma said, “Let’s just call it ‘The Bride’.” That’s why you never hear her name. They got to do everything they’ve always wanted to do, plus some. For how violent as this film is, Uma was raised by her parents in the Buddhist religion.

    So Kill Bill was originally filmed as ONE movie. Unfortunately after editing, it ran about 5 hours in length. Since Tarantino didn't want to cut any of the film, he chose to break it into 2 separate films. This is why you have a few "flash forwards" at the end of this movie (you will see them in part 2).
    Part 1 has most of the action whereas Part 2 has incredible storytelling, character development, and dialog (something Tarantino is known for). This is why I personally liked part 2 better - it was simply a better movie overall.
    Also, I'm glad I'm not the only one who recognizes the "Wilhelm scream". 🙂

    • @OfficialMediaKnights
      @OfficialMediaKnights  Рік тому +7

      Oh see that's a cool piece of trivia, we didn't know it was supposed to be one movie! Splitting it was the smartest choice, that way you don't sacrifice the storytelling. Tarantino's dialogues are absolutely epic, and so is his tension building! Stay tuned for Vol 2, it will be up soon!
      Also haha it is a civic duty to recognize and state it out loud when you hear the Wilhelm scream!

    To this day, this is still my favorite Tarantino film. During your reaction, you hit on several things that makes this movie hold up and enjoyable to watch and it's the cinematography, over-the-top style, and use of music. In this movie more so than most that I've watched, the music feels like a character. Totally agree about Uma Thurman. She should have been nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for this movie. The best lead performance out of all of Tarantino's movies, in my opinion.

    As much as you are seeing other movies drawing from this, understand that this is a conscious mash-up/collage of everything Quenting loves, there's literally nothing new here except the arrangement. Every shot, every detail, every stylistic choice, all those "meticulous decisions" you're seeing are references to other movies, shows or pop culture that Quentin loves. (The Bride's yellow motorcycle leathers are a direct reference to Bruce Lee's iconic "superhero costume" from "Game of Death" (1978) and the music playing during her motorcycle ride is the jazz version of "Flight of The Bumblebee" which was used as the theme music for Bruce Lee's TV series "The Green Hornet") He's not shy about this, he'll tell you each and every single thing he's borrowing/referencing/stealing and gush endlessly about why he loves them so much. Poke around UA-cam you can probably find interviews or supplemental materials from the DVD release of Quentin citing every movie and show he's referencing and how they inspired and influenced this film.
    Kill Bill is obviously a "martial arts movie" but there are several sub-categories of that and these movies cycle through them, giving each scene a distinctive feel. When she fights Vivica Fox in the first scene it's "Wu Da Pian;" contemporary action movies with a focus on fairly realistic, grounded martial arts scenes, the genre Jackie Chan pioneered in the 80's with movies like "Police Story" and "Operation Condor." There's an anime flashback because of course that would be the style in which to tell the story of Lucy Liu's rise to power. The showdown at the karaoke bar is in the style of Japanese samurai and ninja movies. The second movie will be more of a traditional "Wu-Jia Pian" - fantasy wire-kung fu movie like "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" or "Hero".
    But the the tone, the music, and the storytelling are a Spaghetti Western like Sergio Leone's "A Fistful of Dollars"(1964) or "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" (1966), and to a lesser degree, the Italian "woman's revenge" genre of thrillers like Meir Zarchi's "I Spit On Your Grave"(1978) in which a wronged woman, usually a gang-rape victim, systematically hunts down her assailants and dispatches them with satisfyingly cruel methods.
    "This walked so John Wick could run"
    John Wick is the latest evolution in genre that's at least 60 years old and spans multiple nations and film industries in various countries, with a rich history of so many iconic, influential movies that a must-see list can't be narrowed down to a top 25 or even 50. John Wick owes much to John Woo's "The Killer" (Hong Kong 1989) which in turn is the Chinese take of Jean Pierre Mellville's "Le Samourai." (France 1967). The motorcycles-and-sword chase was a direct lift from Jung Gyung-Bil's "The Villainess" (Korea 2017). Kill Bill's fight choreographer Yuen Woo-Ping's first American movie was "The Matrix"(1999) which also drew heavily from wu-jia and John Woo's signature "gun-fu" style, as well as anime, and was where "John Wick" director Chad Stahelski learned his chops as Keanu's stunt double.

    • @OfficialMediaKnights
      @OfficialMediaKnights  Рік тому +2

      Absolutely agree! In fact it’s very rare to find anything absolutely original at all. But like you said it’s all in the arrangement. All artist are inspired by other art. But not all know how to blend all the different things they love and make it work. Truly impressive! To add some context to my John Wick comment. From a cinematography stand point there’s a shot from over the top that is very reminiscent to its use in the recent John Wick film (if you’ve seen it, then you know which scene im referring to) as well as the bike sequence with the samurai. Just thought it was extremely similar yet they went in complete different directions which is awesome to see. Thank you for sharing some knowledge on cinema history 😄

    I just found your channel, and so far your reactions and commentary are great!
    I do love me some Kill Bill.
    I was a teen when Tarantino burst onto the scene, and I was an instant fan. If you have not watched “True Romance” or “Natural Born Killers” I recommend you do at some point. They are both Tarantino works, and NOT Tarantino works at the same time.
    He sold 2 of his earliest screenplays in order to primarily help fund the production of “Reservoir Dogs” his first feature film, another great one to watch if you haven’t seen it. Those screenplays were then made into the first 2 movies I suggested above. It is interesting to watch Tarantino’s story and dialogue be handled by a different director. One of the movies you can tell 100% is a Tarantino story and the other one not so much, at least in my opinion. I won’t say which is which, it would be interesting to see if you guys agree with me or not and get your thoughts in general about two of my favorite movies. Either way, you get to watch some awesome movies and have more content for the channel 😁
    Happy I found you guys and can’t wait for whatever your next reaction is. Subscribed!

    Tarantino loves cult films, especially 60's-70's Japanese 'Pinky Violence' gangster revenge films and 60's-70's Spaghetti Westerns which also have epic revenge themes, Westerns with Italian directors, filmed in Spain with mostly Italian and Spaniard actors with a few Americans, Germans, French and other Euros. Some of the soundtrack songs on Kill Bill 1 & 2 are from those Japanese cult films and Spaghetti Westerns. I have a ton of both those genre films. The revenge in some is epic. They're part fairytale, part gritty, with brutal violence and often sociopathic/psychopathic characters.

    One thing some people miss with this movie is that O-Ren is the first name on her list and she already had it crossed off after she killed Vernita at the very beginning of the movie. So if you caught that, you actually already know the outcome of her fight with O-Ren before you actually see what happens. 🙂

    I love this movie so much that I named my ferret Yūbari.😂 She's a white ferret with red eyes, just like how Gogo shed blood tears when she died (at 21:01 though you cut the shot). (And now that I think about it Oren has a white kimono so I can link those two as well.)
    It's so funny when I take her out on walks and some people would ask her name. (BTW I live in Japan) You see; Yūbari (夕張) is a city in northern Japan that is very famous for it's melons. So when they hear "Yūbari", they think I named my ferret after the melon, but then I tell them that she's named after a Yakuza character. I just love seeing the confused looks on their faces.🤣🤣 (Note: Tarantino got the name from the Yūbari International Film Festival that he had a very pleasant experience in the past.)

They left us on such a cliffhanger, everyone walked out in shock, awe, and huge smiles. We knew we had watched and experienced yet another Tarantino masterpiece.

    So many subtle things I love about the part of this that took place in Japan!
    1. O-ren's Kimono: It’s white, which is the color of death in Japan
    2. When the Bride calls O-ren out, she does it in Chinese. SO disrespectful given O-ren's role as the top yakuza dog. And it speaks to the depth of the relationship between the two (and the depth of betrayal), that the Bride would know to call her out in that way.

    In KB2 you asked for a favorite scene. For Kill Bill (1) it is her meeting with Hattori Hanzo. Loved the entire sequence and that final personnel shift! The key takeaway was an Asian Master under whom Bill studied was instrumental in Kiddo's plan. That is all I will say but will carry this into my KB2 reply.

    One of my favorite movies. I saw it in the theater. There are so many subtle things brilliantly written into the movie that are easily overlooked. For example in the anime flashback telling of the death of O-Ren’s parents it is actually Bill that kills them. (The man is wearing Bill’s ring and has his sword) Since young O-Ren was under the bed she didn’t see his face. So O-Ren unknowingly grew up to work for the man who killed her parents.

    If you ever take a trip to Japan, the restaurant that they modeled the Crazy 88/ O ren fight location from is in the Roppongi area of Tokyo and is called Gonpachi. There is a sushi restaurant upstairs and a bar/ grill restaurant on the ground floor where they have everything from pizza to soba and yakitori. The scene was shot on a sound stage in China but Tarantino had visited Gonpachi on a trip to Japan (it may have been a location scouting trip for this movie) and liked the look so much he made his own version for the movie. I got to eat there earlier this year and even though it was busy, it was worth the wait time. They play O ren's intro theme "The House Of Blue Leaves" over the PA system when one of the guests has a birthday and they bring out a piece of cake for them. They didn't have the roof access open so I can't confirm if they have a garden on the roof like you see in the film or not but my bet would be that they don't.
    The band playing in the scene is a real Rockabilly group from Japan called the 5-6-7-8's . Tarantino heard them playing when he was in a shop in Tokyo just before jumping on a plane back to the states and asked the shop owner if he could buy the CD so that he could hear more of their music and also be sure to remember their band name so that he could contact them for the film. Apparently, the CD wasn't for sale at the store but the cashier was nice enough to sell him their own personal copy that had been playing in the store.
