      Crocs in water, sharks
      No air conditioning
      High heat
      Can flush toilet
      Are they going to pee and poop outside???
      No food

      And the rescue are not coming back

    This is not Sanibel Island, I am from there. It could be Fort Myers? Very different degree of surge damage and misleading bc the resident’s choice to stay is not on an island with an inoperable bridge.

    This breaks my heart, my brother went through Harvey after being in his new home 7 days. With all that happened he now lives in a trailer because of the Texas, FEMA LIES & taxing him above & beyond right out of his home. Be aware of the. Government when they state they are there to help you.

      Places like Sanibel are dangerous because of hurricanes. It is hard to access them as causeways are expensive to build and maintain. Getting water and electricity and other resources to them is difficult and expensive, too. That is why your taxes are high to live out there. I prefer to visit places like this but live in a safer and more accessible area.

    Guys listen: a few years back hurricane Irma and others were rumored to be absolutely AWFUL, life threatening and terrible (and they were for the Florida keys but not Sannibel and Fort Myers) so the news chilled down after the storm was so anticlimactic. So now for Ian they said it wouldn’t be as bad and the residents didn’t trust them much anyway now. They didn’t believe they had to evacuate and really had no need if their houses were up to flood code. When they realized it was going to be bad, it was too late.
    Also, THERE ARE NO MANDATORY EVACUATIONS!! In Florida, you cannot force someone to evacuate. It’s illegal.

  • @jolus6678
    @jolus6678 2 роки тому +6

    Those homes are intact. Flooded but intact. When you live basically on the beach you need to expect flooding from storm surge every few years. However if I was an old retiree I would not want to live on the beach. Leave that for the young.

    • @oliviareynold312
      @oliviareynold312 Рік тому

      Doesn’t matter. If it’s flooded, it’s totaled and sone of them weren’t in tact at all, most of them actually. I was in Ian and was flooded. House is gone now.

    • @jolus6678
      @jolus6678 Рік тому

      @@oliviareynold312 no, most of the houses were not gone at all so stfu. Most of the houses on the island are still there. I live very close and visited the barrier islands the very day they started letting people back onto sanibel. Many of the old wooden buildings were totaled but some just needed repairs. Fort Myers beach was way way way worst! But it revived way less media attention because it wasn’t as wealthy of an area. Even there however it was all the very old weak wooden structures that were all completely destroyed. The cement ones even right directly on the beach were intact and perfectly fine. I visit sanibel, pine island and the other barrier islands in the area every few months. Sanibel is coming along very nicely. Even most of the plants and trees are filling back in. Fort myers beach on the other hand lost the vast majority of the vegetation. It seems even the palm trees were nearly all uprooted due to soil erosion and washed out to sea. Sanibel on the other hand even had towering Norfolk pines still standing and regrowing after losing their canopies. Huge sea grape trees were regrowing their canopies in front of a house right at the very end of Sanibel. The house was fully intact and people were on the front porch chatting and relaxing the last I was there.

    Didn’t they say to evacuate ?

    • @mustashman260
      @mustashman260 Рік тому

      They did at the last minute. Originally the storm was supposed to hit the pan handle, like 500 miles away, then the big bend of Florida, about 350-400 miles. Then on the day of the storm it was going to Tampa, 200 miles north then at after the power went out the storm turned and made a direct hit for Lee County. You cannot expect to evacuate the day of. I know many people who left during hurricane Irma and had to abandon their cars on the side of the interstate after running out of fuel. When the whole state is evacuating north and there is only two interstates, I-75 on west coast and I-95 north it’s pure grid lock. It’s almost 400 miles from Sanibel to the Georgia border. PLUS, the media cried wolf with storm surge for the last 40 years in this area and NOBODY took it seriously…..Won’t make that mistake again.

Home if the famous Chincoteague Island wild ponies! Assateague Island was formed in 1938 by a hurricane . It was once a part of Ocean City Maryland! An Inlet now separates Ocean City and Assateague Island! Florida is a RED state! They don't like rules and regulations ! That's EXACTLY why these areas get flooded and people lose their homes! No way to drive off the island. Uhm, weren't there mandatory EVACUATION ORDERS in place to prevent the necessity of scenes such as this?? For positive spin, I guess this gives the rescue personnel some real time training. I lived in the Florida panhandle for 25 years, went through more hurricanes than I can remember (I lived inland) and could never figure out what makes people stay in these situations and then expect the rest of society to bail them out of their bad decisions.

      they stay because they have nowhere else to go and there is no guarantee the storm will hit exactly where they live. hurricanes are notorious for changing direction at the last second in the gulf.

    • @KrissyMeow
      @KrissyMeow 2 роки тому +3

      Along with what the first commenter said, it costs quite a bit to evacuate. Many simply can't afford it or can't afford to spend the money and possibly have their home be just fine and then they return to be without any money for bills or rent or food for the next weeks or month.
      Most people in the US can't afford a surprise bill/accident that costs $500. Much less a hotel room for days, if not weeks and all the gas and food money. All while not being able to work.

    • @thecomorbiditycurator8018
      @thecomorbiditycurator8018 2 роки тому +4

      @@KrissyMeow thanks for articulating what I could not when I summarized it to "have nowhere else to go" 🤣 I was really struggling with my words yesterday, I was too angry at this person's hateful willful ignorance.
      It should be noted that most emergency shelters do not allow pets and will have animal shelters come pick the pets up for boarding, an expense pet owners must pay for unless the individual animal shelter in their area has chosen to offer boarding free of charge for the duration of the weather event. This is a major reason why most news coverage we see following a natural disaster involves people being rescued WITH their pets or people searching for their pets they were separated from. Emergency shelters also are largely inaccessible to the disabled community and discriminate against disabled people who use service dogs. A friend of mine who lives in California was forced into a week of homelessness a few years ago when a wildfire got too close to her neighborhood. Everyone was evacuated, apartment by apartment, so she had to leave. She survives on SSDI, so she couldn't afford to stay in a hotel for several nights. Her friends and family nearby either did not have accessible homes or they were also evacuated. All 3 of the wildfire emergency shelters in her city were inaccessible for her wheelchair, lacked transferable cots for evacuees who are wheelchair users, denied her legally protected right to her service dog, and refused to allow her to use an electrical outlet to charge her medical devices. So she and her SD lived in her van and a nice gas station employee at a spot nearby let her park out back, charge her electrical medical devices in the office/storage room, and use the bathroom whenever she needed. After all that, the fire abruptly changed direction with the wind and her apartment building wasn't even a little bit toasted on the exterior.
      Considering that the people in this YT short are elderly and elderly people are more likely to develop disabilities and health concerns, it is likely that they chose to stay put because there were no accessible options for them. They also have pets that are being rescued with them, which indicates that the animal shelters charged too much for emergency board or were possibly already at capacity. I have a few friends who are fellow SD users who live around the area Ian hit and not one of them left because their emergency shelters denied their right to their service dog and did not allow them to wear personal masks (an accessibility problem for disabled people who are immunocompromised/immunosuppressed and/or have mast cell disorders). Their non-shelter options were financially limited as well as limited by forms of transportation (not every form is accessible). The lack of accessibility in emergency shelters is a huge ableist middle finger to the entire disability community, implying that our lives are not worth saving. It's truly disgusting. So a whole demographic of people are just stuck, and then garbage people, like Darlene Bradley here, talk about them like they had a choice and thus deserve to lose everything and nearly die.

      Also, I know I’m late to the table in these comments but after riding that storm out and feeling like I have PTSD from it I am just bringing myself to watch these videos. Almost 5 months later and our area is still devastated. another reason people might not have left is the media had cried wolf for years about storm surge and nothing ever happened. No one took it seriously. Also all the scum bag looters trying to steal whatever is left from the destroyed homes.
