Us in Yorkshire say “Reyt” spelled as shown in my comment. It can mean alright, okay, right, correct etc 🙂 I’m happy that you said yorkshire (york-shh) correct! It really annoys us from Yorkshire, when they say SHIRE instead 😄
Mardy bum is a lighthearted way of calling someone moody ! It’s playful and it’s used a lot when you are a kid (mainly because you can’t swear at a kid) or as teenager by your parents or to someone you are family with. Not used that much with friends, but can be.
With Yorkshire slang (South Yorkshire) it’s slightly different to West Yorkshire.. and so forth. So in Sheffield you really hear unique variations of words/phrases.
I’m from Sheffield myself and even in Sheffield people have certain different phrases compared to others from the city.
Arctic monkeys are like gods in Sheffield. Some of their songs are formed from nights out ... for instance ‘Red light indicates doors are secure’ is from Sheffield black cabs, when they lock you in the taxi.
They mention pubs in cornerstone (not the real names but they are references to actual pubs)

@@bignumbers yeah we do, depends on who’s saying it. Shortening Mardy-arse to mard-arse can be taken as less offensive/ slightly more offensive. But obviously it’s usually used as light banter wouldn’t be aggressive

This song along with Florescent Adolescent got me into them when I was 13-14ish. I remember learning what Mardy Bum meant and using it in my English papers.

My favourite Arctic Monkeys song by far. I think this is the song that shows his Yorkshire side the most

I'm mexican and I kinda got both of those, granted I studied english from preschool but I always assumed having "the face on" has something to do with being angry or annoyed, knowing mexican spanish also helps given it's such a poetic language full of those kind of metaphors.
Reight just felt like a fancy version of right, I always noticed how british characters in shows tend to do that full mouth thing and I love it, I sometimes even delve into it without noticing lol.
