Welcome to channel if you're new here, I'm Orbital Potato and play a bunch of strategy, simulation and sci-fi games here on UA-cam. I usually cover these games in the Lets Play format, but also make videos analysing specific game mechanics and looking at new releases. "Short selling is free money", "I'm in so much debt", "Can I sell my house?"
A tale as old as time
I don't actually understand the stock market, but have kept an eye on this title as I've wanted a stocks game since OpenTTD.
Bought it last night as it's on offer.
So using your video as a tutorial as much as a review. Thanks Potato!
Him not understanding how puts and calls work reminds me of real life people just thinking selling naked calls is such a GREAT idea.
I think you're taking out credit as short shares, those aren't yours, those are ones you've borrowed. So if it dips you're in trouble because you have to pay them back at some point at the price you took them for. You need to buy shares in the main window and then sell them in the short menu. You're taking so much in credit!
Not sure if you are referring to smth in game (didnt watch the whole video yet) but in general for short selling you borrow the stock and buy it back (ideally) lower or higher.
When shorting there is usually no holding of the underlying asset by the short seller
@@satnawk5328in game. It works weirdly. I'm assuming you need to buy the shares and then offer them as short shares. You can also take them on credit, which is what orbital was doing thinking he was shorting. That did not end very well.
@@yap9877ohhh i see, indeed weird!
@@yap9877 Are you sure? It looked pretty straight-forward in Orbital's video (I haven't played the game myself) - you "sell" shares you do not own, and have them on credit. You need to buy shares to even out the credit (sooner or later). If share price goes down, you make a bunch of money - if it goes up, you lose because you already "sold" them for a lower price. That's what short-selling is in real-life too - you sell borrowed stuff, and hope you can buy it later for cheaper.
Orbital just doesn't seem to understand what he's trying to do here :D You short-sell when you expect the share price to go _down_ ; it's essentially a very risky loan.
But I love when games expose mechanics like this. I didn't really understand how stock markets (and related stuff) works until I really got into Railroad Tycoon 3. That game is still amazingly illuminating as to why railroad barons and co. were so destructive and how easy it is to go from "I'm doing amazingly great and expanding like crazy" to "I can't afford the clothes on my back" :D The best games give you the experience you just don't get from reading books, even if its simplified :)
As someone who makes a living from trading, this looks very fun lol
until AI steal ur wallet lol.🤣
@@TheKadirovstasohh god each and every time
Just FYI, dividends are cooked into a price reduction automatically in the real world, not sure if the game follows the same logic or not.....which means if you get $1 per share, the price of the company goes down by $1 per share on that alone (although market moves after that morning point, so it could get it back, but still). This means that "high dividend stocks" usually deteriorate pretty fast in the real world unless it has a substantial income base that makes it desirable to investors.
Basically, this game is probably just completely random (maybe brownian motion) with some news event triggers. Games like that are pretty simple to beat, just buy on dips and buy more if it dips more, sell on the way up.
If only it had an option chain and proper supply/demand L2 capturing, then it would look and feel more real.
It's still early access so I'm hoping they iron out any issues because I'd definitely like to buy this.
The CEO graphics look terrible but Amy ❤
a massive fortune! Of 4.4 million! Yeah!
... Yen! oh.
(its 18k in 1980 $ which are 66k in todays $, a nice sum but not 4.4M)
I wish they had options too. That would be so cool
they do have options. what do you think short selling means.
@@iamcool544 I think he means calls and puts, the Greeks, etc
@@malcadorshort selling IS selling a put
@@iamcool544 No they are different. Shorting involves borrowing and selling the actual stocks, a put option is a contract that gives you the right to sell 100 shares of an underlying stock on or before a certain date. Which almost never even happens, the value of an options contract is in it's premium.
@@iamcool544 spoiler: none of us actually knows what options are
Dude, spending 500 yen a day is friggen cheap! Exchange rates for USD would peg that at ~$4-6 USD…
Did Eleon Musk play this?
I think they're going by your steam account birthday
Houses increment in value after a year or so. so don't sell it early.
