Given that Bob is a very technical guy, when he says he didn't receive payment but did receive consideration (a benefit/thing given) I interpret that to mean he likely was able to purchase these at a discount or some equivalent benefit. Appreciate that he disclosed that and Kii didn't edit that out. I have a feeling that some other BXT videos (Streaky) probably have similar arrangements but Streaky is always a bit shady with his "reviews." That said as someone still weighing options between the Kiis and some others, I'm looking foward to #2 as this was a very informative video with information I've not seen anywhere else (which is exactly what I'd expect from Bob Katz). Update: Went with the Kiis. Very pleased.
Let me just say these are the only speakers I've ever paid for out of my own pocket!!!...I've always either been given speakers or worked at studios that already had them...I think that speaks volumes...pun intended :)

There's a million ways to provide a financial benefit and allow you to still say "you paid for them with your own money"....Getting them at cost or significant discount is still a financial benefit and still allows you to say you "paid for them out of your pocket." Anyway, the way you're trying to phrase things, instead of simply stating you didn't receive any benefit seems like you want to imply you didn't receive any benefit but you're being very careful to not actually say that. My guess is it's why you stated in your BXT video you didn't even know what they cost...as I think most people who would at least remember a "ballpark figure" for such a purchase.
As far as significant discount goes, any well established, well known mastering engineer can get a great deal from any speaker company. In the end they end up with the speakers they prefer the most, and based on that, a review will be just as valid and relevant.
@@atta1798 There are literally laws that one discloses when they're being compensated for a review in the US, UK, and EU. It's just not routinely prosecuted, similar to jay walking (though the UK has criminally convicted people). Regardless, the point is it was refreshing to see Bob being transparent about it while many others aren't.
I have a pair of Kii Three's (without the BXT extension) acquired second hand after a long search. Sadly I can't afford the BXT's because the second hand Kii Threes alone - were at my limit.. They are though, the best and clearest sound I've ever heard short of a live performance. They're used here in a small studio/listening room and are coupled directly (using a Curious USB cable) to an Innuos Zenith SE which is controlled by Roon and streams both Tidal and Qobuz. I also have the Kii Control unit which permits other inputs and all sorts of tweaking to suit your needs. I have also fed them (a slightly "warmer" more valve - like sound) with a balanced analogue signal from a Graham Slee Majestic DAC I normally use on my headphone system. In all cases, the sound is tight, fast, and with a phenomenally wide sound stage. Bass is deep, very deep - and belies the size of the Kii Three cabinet (just the top unit that Bob has). If this is all sounding like unnecessary superlatives, or that I've been drinking , or that I don't know my LS3/5a from my elbow - then I apologise. I just can't easily express just how firkin good these things are! My recommendation - hear them for yourself on music and ideally a room you know well. I will be VERY surprised if you're not completely blown away.
I agree with every word you said about the Kiis ! I own them for 2 ½ years now. Before I had a pair of ME Geithain which were great, but the Kiis are…better, because they build a room that is just like sitting in a live concert : one day I “felt” Diana Krall putting her arms around me…I could even smell her perfume ! And you can keep your mind at rest because of the BXTs : I had them here at home side by side with the Three and a couple of friends of mine (2 pianists, 1 concertmaster …) and me had an intensive A-B test for 2 days….but all of them agreed that in my room of about 30 sqm the difference was too small, even when testing them A-B.
Bob, thanks for not dumbing it down! It’s really tough to find content with a more technical but not too technical perspective. Don’t be shy on the metaphors when explaining these concepts for guys like me, think Physics for poets!

Hi Viral, we are currently using Cirrus Logic DACs, before the fire at AKM we were using DACs from AKM.

To maximize their performance you still need the Kii BXT and an audio processor that includes good RC, such as Dirac Live or Trinnov.
No you definitely don't need Trinnov or Dirac... but acoustic treatment is paramount in any control room.
I still need to hear a pair but these along with a few other candidates, are on the short list of monitors I'm probably going to buy this year.
do you have the budget for the full range combo of Kii's?
