This was the best discussion I have ever heard on this topic. It isn't just opinion, its backed up with quotes from other people in the business with credibility. Well researched and very informative. Thanks for doing this.
Don’t they, though you wouldn’t think it would be a podcast to where you didn’t want to miss a beat, but it’s top-of-the-line. Mr. Briscoe has the best stories and JBL complements the podcast just as well dynamic duo A1.
Only thing I didn't like is he said "snakepit has lost its meaning" try telling Josh Barnett that after Owen Livesey beat him at a catch rules superfight.
Great show. Size matters. I vote for Man Mountain Rock for Most Dangerous shooter. All American and national champion from Iowa before Heavyweight weight limit and student of Karl Gotch in submission. A name most have forgotten
I'm not surprised that there would be tension when guys like Thesz, Hodge and Gotch were all in the ssme room, that's three alpha males right there. Thesz may not have had the competitive amateur background of Hodge or Gotch who were Olympians or even Robinson who competed at British/European level but Thesz knew enough wrestling to go along with the submissions and was a genetic freak, if Gotch and Robinson could have beaten Lou in a shoot fight I don't believe they would have had it easy at all, Thesz does seem to move quicker than both guys on film too.
Thesz was trained by masters . Most notably Strangler Lewis . I have my doubts about anyone beating him . Not saying it couldn’t happen . Just that I cannot confidently say who would definitely beat him .
I remember reading a Japanese journalist saying that he emailed George Gordienko about the Robinson/Maivia fight and that he claimed that Robinson took him down then Maivia bit his face so they broke it up. I wish Shannon went more into detail about that fight, Robinson claims he knocked out Maivia for 20+ minutes but I don't believe that.
I would put Danny Hodge ahead of both Karl and Robinson, he accomplished more in amateur wrestling and had the boxing career too winning the Golden Gloves and fighting professional so he was much more well rounded. Bill Watts mentioned in his book that one night in the ring The Iron Sheik and Hodge were booked to have a shoot match, apparently Hodge was sick at the time and was still able to take him down, hook him and beat him with ease, Watts also mentioned on a podcast that Gotch actually turned down sparring with Hodge. Lou Thesz told Jim Ross that Hodge was on another level compared to everyone else in the business, Terry Funk and Ole Anderson also said they never knew anyone that could take Hodge.
Karel Istaz (Karl Gotch) had a win and two losses at the 1948 Olympics as a light heavyweight in Greco-Roman wrestling. In Freestyle he had a win, a bye and a loss.
Hodge was a great wrestler but not a great boxer, he would've done great in MMA though. Watts is full of it on the Gotch thing, Karl was afraid of no one and said Danny was a a sweetheart of a guy they go along well but even Thesz said Gotch would've bested Hodge, too much size and knowledge. Funk and Anderson were tough but not shooters or wrestlers just performers.
@@jonathanmitchell8752 Hodge wasn't a great boxer but he was still a better boxer than most professional wrestlers due to the fact that he was a Golden Gloves Champion and fought professionally which would give him even more of an advantage against the likes of Gotch in a fight. Ole wasn't anywhere near the guys mentioned when it came to shooting but he knew enough to look after himself and even Bob Roop said Ole was a legitimate tough guy.

jody being straightfoward about pancrase
My three most favorite shooters are Funaki Masakatsu, Joe Malenko, and Josh Barnett
Mister Brisco and JBL have the best interviews in the wrestling podcast world. Fantastic interview!
I like Brisco & Bradshaw. You make a great team!

Jerry and JBL need to have Flair on sometime. That would be epic considering he and Jerry go back to the old territory days and the Mid Atlantic area.
The top of the line nothing but the truth wrestlers nothing but the truth
great show , learned a lot Billy was 1 of my favorites

Thesz had freakish reflexes.

Why no mention of Jack Brisco?
Danny Hodge was the greatest shooter I ever saw in the ring .
I heard it was Syphilis that sidelined Gotch too

Hodge was a freak of nature . He could perform at a high level at anything he pursued .
Karel Istaz (Karl Gotch) had a win and two losses at the 1948 Olympics as a light heavyweight in Greco-Roman wrestling. In Freestyle he had a win, a bye and a loss.
In 1956, Danny Hodge had 5 wins and 1 loss as a middleweight in freestyle to place second in the Melbourne Olympics.

Bob Roop and Dutch Mantell said none of the shooters would try it with Harley Race.
But why would they ? Harley was the king pin of the NWA . There would be no upside
and Harley wouldn't try them in a straight wrestling match.
Hickok45 is the greatest shooter
Billy Jack Haynes was so frustrated over not getting on the show that he murked his wife out....
