  • Here are some factors which I believe make my Harley Davidson the wrong motorcycle of choice for the kind of situations and riding that I want to do in the coming years. Is your motorcycle still the right choice?

I think my riding days are coming to an end , as arthritis is setting in. Oh well it has been fun while it lasted. I will keep watching Alf.

Analysis paralysis...I'd never get out of the garage if I thought about things this much. Unless you have extremely limited riding needs/desires, no bike will be perfect. They all have their limitations. If a bike makes you smile when you look at it, makes you want to ride, and you can afford it, then that's the right one. It doesn't need to get any more complicated that than. Overthinking will suck the joy out of just about anything...

Maybe upgrade the suspension and get stage 2 torque cam on sport glide. Cheaper than new bike.
European roads are not like American multi lane open straight roads. Extra weight of touring bike would not be that great.

Another great vid Rev. I have just been where you're at. I had a 2005 Softail Standard from new. Put on a heap of k's but had to analyse my riding style. I was starting to do longer trips and although I could do it on the Softail I felt the need for something a bit bigger, some modern tech, and some bags. Decided on a 2021 Heritage Classic 114. Still light and maneuverable enough for the daily commute but big enough for the longer trips. Also very easy to change appearance through removal of windscreen if that floats your boat. Traded the old bike. I understand the idea of owning multiple bikes but can only ride one at a time. Very happy with the new beast. Looking forward to seeing where your journey takes you. Pup

Its not. But the problem is when the sun shines twice a year you’ll want it back. Problem is really the dealer network…

I went from a Harley bagger to a BMW. Now as an old guy who rides solo l'm looking at the 400-500cc range of bikes.

Alf, my last two bikes were Softails; Crossbones and Heritage Classic 114. Both were uncomfortable for trips over 3 days - ENTER MY 2023 Road King Special in Billiard Blue! IT IS A LIFETIME SOLUTION! Touring Harley is soooo comfortable!

If you are being ignored while riding your HD, put some tassels on it and wear an Eval Kanevil suit.

I’ve bounced from one bike to two and even three at a time over the years but it never works out ( for me ) because they just don’t get used enough. So back to one now and I reckon that’s how I will keep it.

I know what you mean about having more than one bike. I have two and it is a juggle. I will say my bike heavy touring bike is perfect for those trips with my wife. For everyday riding that touring bike is to much.

I've decided to sell my Heritage Springer Softail this season FLSTSI
I don't need two motorcycles, and I rather prefer my Pan America Special 2023. RA1250S
It does it all; finest motorcycle I have ever ridden!

      @MisdemeanorThoughts , t h e short answer is, NO.
I have owned several Hondas, and I test ride just to get a feeling for what's put there.
It is safe to say that I am a Harley fan boy.

@@markh.harris9271 I genuinely appreciate the answer. I stand corrected. Enjoy your Pan-AM. But for the life of me, I can’t understand (or maybe I do, but just don’t want to believe it) why Harley can’t make a CONSISTENTLY solid product. They’ll have a solid year or two. And then produce complete garbage for the same or longer. Especially when they’ve “developed” a new component (I’m almost certain they use their customers as test Guinea pigs.) and they keep going bankrupt. So I would like to think it’s just the “market”. But I doubt it.

Please Re-think that again buddy...that Springer is THE PINNACLE OF HD design combing classic & modern upgrades...I wanted one but couldn't get one in my price range & so settled for a 2002 flstc-i w/ an 88B,I've done a new chain & cam plate & hydraulic lifters & high pressure oil pump....DONE AT 30,000 miles...
So I'm kinda bound to it as I'm 62 & don't know how much longer I'm going to be riding otr...

If I were looking for a big tourer I would skip HD and pick up a used goldwing vaquero, or star eluder. They got the power, comfort, and touring prestige without the cost of an HD.

Keep the bike and wait till you're closer to retirement because plans can change when you get there. The Mrs will be more comfie on a tourer, then on a big Adv bike, irrespective what you did to your current bike to make it more comfortable foe the passenger. A budget bike to bring with you on your camper and be good 2 up for a day trip would be the 2024 Hymalayan 450.

  • @mikemitchell3889

Amico mio, you have a LOT on your mind
If your gonna tour, factor-in dealership availability. I'd venture to say, in the vast CONUS, it's easier to fix an Africa Twin that I will be to fix that boxer GS 1300. (UK mileage may differ)
Do you get the big v-twin Kawasaki in the UK? Good value on a capable road bike. They will pound some miles...
As far as making the decision,
    Buona Fortuna!

Harley Davidson is NOT a motorcycle manufacturer. They’re a motorcycle ACCESSORY manufacturer, that just so happens to sell motorcycles on which only those accessories fit. It’s a shit company, with shit products. Don’t argue with me about that fact. Argue with their last three bankruptcies, before a Chinese conglomerate bought them. And even then it’s not looking good again.
