  • Let's talk about how to change the oil in your Harley Davidson motorcycle - anyone can do this without going to a mechanic. Everyone talks about a 3 hole oil change BUT it's the "often not talked about" 4th hole that gets people unstuck - put the wrong oil in this hole and it's a disaster.

I have used HD oil exclusively. I put an extra quart in the oil tank of my Sportster. I have had my Sportster for 25 years and 400,000 miles on the original engine and 37 back tires and 17 front ones and 3 belts in 25 years.

I made the same switch from using Syn3 for all 3 holes to using HD Heavy Synthetic Gear oil for the primary and transmission….a friend who is also a MC mechanic uses it exclusively, so good enough for me, and so far, happy with it.

I liked the gear oil in the trans, but it made my gear changes harder when I used it in the primary. Neutral was defi harder.

    @nevillegrego7112 4 місяці тому +6

I was never happy with the gear changes in my M8 Low Rider. Neutral was hard to find, especially when the motor was hot, gear changes were not always smooth, and down shifting during spirited riding was not always that great. All services were done by the dealer during the warranty period and they used Syn3 in all 3 holes. Once the bike was out of warranty I did the 3 hole oil change but decided to use Red Line V-Twin Transmission Oil in the gear box. You can believe it when I say what an improvement to the gear changes, neutral became easy to find and the whole box and dice in the transmission/gear changes became almost buttery smooth - well at least compared to the way it was before.

Sounds like a bloke I know here in Perth (Western Australia) ... 79 years old, super fit, strong as an ox, tougher than tough and won't quit working doing medium grano jobs. He told me if he quit the hard yakka, he'd lose the momentum of being able to do the work. He does have one or two vices though, so he won't die rich. He'll never be forgotten for what a hard worker he is. Thumbs up to all the hard working mostly European migrants who helped build what we enjoy today. And their mothers & wives who fed them good food!

Great video. My bike actually has a fourth hole in that I recently installed an Oil Bud oil cooler that fits up in between the frame on my softail. It has a drain plug. I highly recommend it for lowering oil temp in hot weather and stop and go traffic. Check them out.
I like your take on seed oils. In the States it’s amazing how little food is available that doesn’t contain seed oils or high fructose corn syrup. Being recently diagnosed with type two diabetes I have started to eliminate those things from my diet, I feel better and have lost 40 lbs just by watching those two items.

HD formula + for primary and tranny is the best!!! I’ve used it for so many years and so many bikes. People try to reinvent the wheel better than the one who created it. There might be a better oil but formula + will guarantee your primary and transmission for the life of the bike that’s the most important thing. But hey we all like spending money and getting sucked in to the oil factor. For engine though I’ve always used Spectro Heavy Duty 20w-50 Mineral

I always used to service my bikes, and was going to change the oil on my Dyna Fat Bob every 4K km's (half service), but ended up getting it serviced all round with Synth3, and noticed the difference straight away , the bike just seems to run better, and shifts easier. I tried researching which oil was best for my baby, the synth came out okay, there was another brand that seemed to be the best, but I couldn't get it easily here in Tas, and the way it runs now, I won't bother changing it

The derby cover torx screws are garbage but using a low quality torx bit doesn’t help. A lot of shops put teflon tape on the plugs to insure oil doesn’t leak due to someone wrenching the plug to tight in the past. I’m personally not a Syn-3 fan. Redline is what I’ve been using regularly on my 2 newer Low Riders. I also use Lucas Break-In 20W-50 with Zinc in my 08 Dyna motor.

Engine Oil change - great Funnel Mate , never Seen before - I have a piece of plastic cut out of the side of an oil bottle works..
Here is a Simple Tip but = Drop sump Oil, thread-tape plug and re-fit, then REFILL tank w/oil..... remove oil-filter, using that funnel run/start engine ( no oil-Filter but with funnel ) until oil pumping out runs clear ! Do NOT rev engine, o'wise it shoots out fer metres away, just idle is Good... I do this every time and it has Never run 'clear' but....... so just run engine for approx 1 minute or until approx 1 litre has passed thru engine. Shut-it-down, smear new filter gasket with oil, there is No point attempting to fill filter with New Oil, its mounted sideways so will just fall-out anyways....... Put some oil back in tank, start and run whilst inspecting for Leaks, check dip-stick and add more as required.. Now go for a quick ride ( like 5-10k's ). Allow bike to cool-off ( like overnight ) and re-check dip-stick and add more oil as required. Intent here is to Remove ' old-oil' from engine, that can and will contaminate New Oil just added......
    Onya Aussie !

My 02 Deuce requires a full purge engine oil change. Dump the tank oil. Remove the return tube. Dump 2 new quarts into the tank. Dead roll the engine 12 turns of the crank and capture the oil from the return tube until the oil is clear. Change the filter. Add .8 quart reconnect the return tube. I use 75W syn transmission oil and I will be using Harley 20-50w primary oil. My diet is tailored to my disabilities. Eat natural foods. I juice spinach, apple, carrot, and pineapple to supercharge my stamina. I'm 11yrs past my expiration date 😂 that the doctors insisted I that would never live to see.😂 Living raw fruits and veggies repairs living cells. If I listened to my doctors and took all pills I refuse to take, I might've been dead already.

Yes literally we can use any v-twin oils I pretty much guess so !,I got the hd brand right now : & the v-rod is obvious out of discuss just poor syn3 &= fine !, with my ‘86 evolution I’m gonna take syn3 as the motor oil & today I still had hd semi transmission & formula+ (=transmission + primary) , so I used up first my rest of the semi-trans fluid for trans + prime !, from next time on I use formula+ because the semi-trans-oil is not available any more (it is the old version of formula+) … have fun god bless England ❤️

I've used Amsoil since 1980 and in every and in my Harley's from 1994 on. The reason I stick with Amsoil is it holds up much better than other oils I've tested when sending oils in for lab tests. And as with all my vehicles I change the oil every 3000 miles some will disagree with this BUT here's my reason for doing oil changes more frequently... oil is cheap engines are not. I believe this is the reason why my 1994 Road King which I still have went 141,000 miles before I decided to rebuild the engine and take it from an 80 cu in to a 95 cu in motor. Also, just a suggestion, you might find it easier to purchase a lab quality plastic pitcher to measure more accurately the amount of oil you want to put into your bike. I find this is a faster way rather than pour a little and look at the bottle marks, pour a little more look at the marks. I just fill to the level I need into the pitcher and then pour that exact amount into the hole, easy peasy lemon sqeezy. Another great informative video.

Amsoil was the oil that my feeble research found to be the best, unfortunately it's rarer than rocking horse poo here in Tasmania, also strongly agree with more frequent oil changes, I put well over 250k km's on my last bike, and I attribute that, to quality oil, changed more often

Good Day OND , you are still very young, I am a Old Dude Nearly Dead, I in my 70s , been riding bikes since I was 10/11, but please don’t tell my mum and dad, 😂 , pass my test for when I was 17, Obviously, because I was a Brit, I was riding triumph Bonneville Norton commandos of different years, I got into HD around 9495, I’ve had sportster FXR and in 2000 I purchased a brand-new deuce, Sadly in 2019 I had to sell it as I had been scammed by my ex female partner, I did however move to France where I now reside, due to all the stress I had a heart attack about two years ago, And I decided when I got some pennies sorted out from my ex relationship that I will purchase a bike, which I have just recently done, and yes, it is another deuce, 2003?, Sadly this has Not been very well looked after. Definitely wrong oils, more noticeable in the gearbox, I took the cover off to have a look inside and it was like Lard in there, I had to replace the main drive belt, plus gearbox sprocket, There was so much mud grime and stones built between the inner primary and the gearbox you could pick it out with a knife or chisel, there must be at least quarter inch of mud up under the mudguards, and crevices between the ancient and the frame that’s dirt grime mud everything you could possibly think of, I think the person had it used it for dirt track riding, so all oil I’ve now been changed with HD recommended oil, 😂, and because I now live in France, I would say 80% of food over here is more healthy than where is in other countries, as we only cook with olive oil, and probably a little bit of butter, and of course that main ingredient a glass of Red wine 🍷,
Great to hear from the other side of the world down under, Ride Safe, Red Free, and dodge those kangaroos, 🦘. 😂,

Grew up with butter and grilled meat and fresh vegetables, when I met my wife and we started living together we followed the Mediterranean diet, butter, olive oil, heaps of vegetables and lean meat, been living this diet for 40 years now and when I see my doctor for my annual check up she tells me to keep doing what I’m doing, not over weight, blood pressure is good,no diabetes and don’t often get winter ills. If people researched how Canola Oil is made they would be horrified.

Amsoil or H-D brand oil are the only brands I use. I used to just use Syn3 as you only had to carry 1 extra quart to have extra oil for all three holes. Now the H-D heavy duty gear oil goes in my trans and primary. And YES I definitely notice a difference in the trans with shifting. (2017 Road Glide Special). I have personally found that Amsoil for the regular oil tends to hold up better and last longer than the Syn3. Not near as dark after 3,000 miles.
Some people use teflon tape on the threads of the plugs. I find that if you torque it properly you don’t have to worry about it.

The main thing about engine oil, is. Using the correct weight, the weight that's recommended by the manufacture. The reason why? The weight of the oil is directly correlated to the accuracy of the design and the build quality of the inside of the engine. the weight of the oil directly corresponds to how far apart the internal parts need to be kept away from each other so an engine that uses a lighter weight boil is made to a higher degree of accuracy, both in the polishing and the roundness of the shafts and bearings, etc., and thereby can use a thinner oil, which allows the pieces to be closer together. This is why you don't mess around with the recommended weights of the oil. And on the back end of this other than the weight of the oil use whatever oil you want to use just change it early with the filter.

For the engine Oil I just use 20W/50.. I have Mates that use and recommend 50W straight ?
My understanding is its all down to operating and ambient Temperature..
I'm in Perth, it never gets real cold, so I do Not use eg = a 10W/40 ( thinner ) engine oil. It does however get Real hot lots.... A '95 Dyna here, 10W/15 in the Primary, and 85W/90 in the Gearbox, lots and regular oil changes, 20 Years i owned it and 200,000k's, still goes Great no Problemmo !

@@OldNotDead-Clubthe best thing you can do with a HD is let it warm up all the way before riding it. I just watched a video with a group of HD techs who stated there is "lots of forgiveness" built in to the engine, "the parts are not even fitting together, nor are the actually round until it gets to operating temp.". Which is all true about an air cooled engine. And even though it may be oiled or partially water cooled it's still an air cooled engine, and internally it's designed as such.

A company makes the Harley oil for Harley Davidson. It really doesn’t matter what brand oil you use if you changing your oil every 3 thousand miles. I use Amsoil for motor oil, Harley gear oil for trans and primary. Amsoil is the best motor oil if you plan on a longer oil change. It provides superior protection and has a high flash point.

Leave the oil cap on. If you open the bottom plug you will see the oil drip slowly. There is a vacuum. If the oil flushes out in a quick way you’re breathers in the airfilter are leaking air. Handy test to see if they are worn.

  • @dennytuma

if you have breathers under your rocker covers you should leave your filler cap on then pull drain plug if oil comes out slow you're ok then remove filler cap if it comes out fast then those little breathers need serviced because they're letting air through

on mine i open the drain and let it drip for bout an hour, I use something known as a Scavenger, when you take off the oil filter you put on this puck and disconnect the return line, put on a tube then put in 3 quarts of new oil, run the engine until the return flow is clean, then reinstall the return pipe to the oil tank, add oil to the line, take the puck off, i have a oil filter cooler that has a 5 micron screen, no need for a reg oil filter. just clean it, let it dry put back on and your ready to ride. the Scavenger removes all the dirty left over oil from the engine. and the new oil stays cleaner a lot longer.

Hi Jim, I made the 'adjustement' in the last year ... will never eat bread, rice, potatos or pasta again. No biscuits, cakes or sweets/lollies/candy (region dependent words). I love my PORTERHOUSE steak (2 pieces nicely done in the air fryer), plus some veggies (eg, a tomato, a few beans/peas & beetroot) and possibly a hard boiled egg. Preparation & washing up is minimal (one plate, a fork and a knife). Despite the cost of the steak, it's still way cheaper than what some people spend on a takeaway that's got all the things that I prefer to avoid. If I'm home during the day, instead of steak, I'll cook a large beef pattie in the air fryer, and have that with a hard boiled egg. After dinner at night, instead of eating chocolate, I'll have a few Kalamata olives which seems gives me a really calm sleep at night (maybe there's a 'placebo' factor there). Sometimes I feel like taking a mini barbeque and some steak with me when I'm out on the Harley Davidson, and stopping somewhere for a roadside steak dinner!
