But I fully agree with your statement and wholefully understand what you are saying. Me personally though, I really don't care where the car is made.
Adam Shurbaji Idk if I'm completely honest I don't know all that much about VWs. Never really bothered researching them as I've never especially liked how they look. So yeah maybe you're right.
"Hard to buy a bad car but easy to buy the wrong car" so well said, Micah! My personal opinion for hatchbacks: Mazda3 for backroad / corner carving enthusiasts Civic for well rounded package Impreza for snow or light off road enthusiasts Corolla iM for lowest price / bang for the buck
rainystorm88 Does anyone really "carve corners" in these cars? Aren't they really just reliable daily drivers for the average working class millennials?
Mazda 3 : looks really stylish and simple at the same time, it's going to age really well. Mazda definitely knows how to make an upscale looking interior! Honda civic: They were trying too hard, because of the criticism the 2015 year model faced, they really went try hard mode lol. It looks hideous. Looks like some 18 year old high school kid designed it. But the interior does look good. Chevy cruze: They really dont give af and didn't want to try because of the success of the older gen chevy cruze. Subaru: I'm really outta words lol, it actually looks nice inside and outside compared to older ones, especially the interior!! I would buy a mazda 3 hands down because it has the best looking interior and exterior. But that is just my opinion. Now before the honda dickriders start trashing me with the reliability shit, stating that honda is more reliable and what not. Please go check the list made by consumer reports on the most reliable brands.
The mazdas interior looks nice but it a tually doesnt feel good. The civic is ugly and looks like highschoolers made it? Guess every car reviewers are highschoolers then. Funny. Stupid. You know how dumb you sound?
With the exception of the FD and maybe the ND, I’m confident in saying that almost all other Mazda’s have not aged well. I.e. First gen Mazda 3/6, NB, NC, RX8, all CX’s, MX3, etc. I think this new Mazda 3 looks good now, but the design is conservative and not modern.
I love my Mazda3 hatch. Would have considered the Impreza as well, but I'm not especially impressed with the CVT. Would love to see a Golf in the lineup too for comparison.
Meh about the Civic. Tried out the seats and wasn't a big fan of them. Tried out the seats on the Impreza and I felt very comfortable. Also if I want more power I'll just go for the WRX. Felt fine on that car too. Sticking with the Impreza forever!
I was in the market for a small-medium sized hatchback with a manual up until recently (issues with a contractor lead to not having a place built to park it in time). I tried the Cruze, fiesta st, veloster turbo, fit sport, sonic rs and mazda 3 touring. That mazda was great, it managed to do everything pretty well. It felt peppy, it was comfortable, had descent room and the interior was gorgeous for a car of that price point. Wish things had worked out but theres always next year
A couple of things almost no one talks about with hatchbacks is their length and gas tank size. A hatchback would suit me for tight parking along with practicality. The relatively short Golf seems strong on that combination. Turning radius, too, is important to me for streets that are narrow and cut off without having the appropriate roundabout of a cul-de-sac. Besides mpg, how about tank size, too? Would like to know how far I can go on a tank.
@@Hallowsaw Hell no. It costs way more if you go to any Subaru dealership. Honda is probably the best pick because of it's cargo space and fuel economy. Unless you are going on adventures or live in rough terrains, there is no point in buying an Impreza. Did you know you have to replace all 4 tires on AWD cars when they wear out? talk about additional cost
@@jamesgand828 if you are rotating properly you will end up replacing them all at the same time anyways. You are supposed to buy new tires every 6 years or so because of dry rot. My yokohama avid ascend gt have lasted me that long and could probably go much longer buy like I said dry rot over time kicks in with All tires. So if I was to buy the same tires and still have to change them every 6 years, what extra cost are we talking about. Yes it's an extra post if a tire blows from a road hazard but honestly tire tread last so long now that really it's not an extra cost. You know what does cost more? Having a 19 in tire vs a 17 or 18in tire. Subarus usually have smaller tires than hondas. It averages about an extra $20 per tire for every inch bigger you go and sometimes even more. Btw $700 over 6 years... really? That's not really that much money
@@Hallowsaw Everything you said is true. But what if you blow out a tire at 20,000 mile into the life of the tires? Do you really think you have time to find a used one? If you blow a tire out on a Civic or any of the other cars you can put the donut on the rear nothing will happen. With the Subaru my grandfather had to pay $1,600 to get the head gasket replaced because it has a boxer engine. He just baught a toyota lmao.
@@chrishotham2854 what engine? What model? 2.5L? Outback? The 3.6, the 2.0 and the 2.4 are very reliable. His must have been a fluke because if you look at the top problems of a 2014, head gaskets are not it.
Eric WRONG all Chevy Cruze models that are sold in the US are built in Lordstown Ohio, only global market Cruze models are built in Mexico. Also 100% of GM sales profits stay in the US, how about the other manufacturers in this comparison???
J.Sakic, Unfortunately, that is not entirely true. The Ohio plant had 1200 layoffs in January with possibly more coming, and it's already been proven that there are Cruzes in American dealerships (even in Lordstown!) that were made in Mexico. The whole notion of buying American is to support the workers. There are plenty of US corporations that profit big from outsourcing, so sales profits don't really factor into the argument.
there's alot more factors than just where the assembly line is located. if you look at the kogod auto index... the cruze 4dr LT is 72% TDC, the cruze 4dr premier is 41% TDC, the cruze hatchback LT is 41% TDC. the impreza is 40% TDC. TDC = total domestic content
I feel it should have been mentioned that the Impreza hit to fuel economy in the manual is due to lacking an entire gear (5 speed) as oppose to a fair fight of a 6 speed manual VS the awful cvt
I would choose Subaru, because of AWD, perfect design for a hatchback, and of course brand's status image. But other cars for different type, gender, and style of people living in different climate zone might work even better.
Yeah I like how practical pretty much all subarus except the BRZ are. Also subaru has one of the most environmentally friendly manufacturing plants in the US where they recycle everything. I can appreciate that. Plus as a highway cruiser, the impreza and outback are excellent. Very smooth cars. It's a shame they haven't branched out to compete in luxury like hyundai and kia has. Let's be honest, subaru sells more cars than either of those companies individually. Also Toyota owns a portion of subaru so I think if Lexus had a boxer variant in their gs or ls lineup that would be amazing.
It's nice that they are finally doing compact hatchbacks. It nice you started with the four, but it would be interesting if you did all the compact hatchbacks when they have had their redesign or refresh. The new look Hyundai Elantra GT and Volkswagen Golf should be out soon. Eventually, the Ford Focus, Kia Forte5, will get theirs.
I've tested all of these cars in sedan form. Your best bet is probably the Honda. The Impreza is simply too slow. AWD is great from a stop for the first 3 seconds. Then you press the accelerator further and nothing happens. The Cruze felt pretty slow too and was kinda bland, but didn't feel truly sluggish like the Subaru. I actually liked the previous generation Cruze more than this one. The Mazda3 is nice and handles well but I was able to feel a lot of the bumps in the road. I'm used to a sporty suspension but this was a bit much. Smooth, snappy 6 speed transmission. The Civic was just great in every way. I was skeptical about the CVT at first but then I drove it and was impressed. Great handling dynamics. Great torque if you get the turbocharged model (and you should). Also very roomy inside without feeling too big. The Civic spoiled the rest of these cars for me. And honestly I wasn't expecting to like it at all.
I couldn't agree more with your review. I have been driving a Mazda cx-5 for the last two years with the same engine and similar suspension as the Mazda 3. Test drove the Civic at the auto show and had to get one and I am over 50 years old. Purchased the EX trim in black last month and absolutely love it! I am always looking for a reason to drive somewhere now. Only thing missing is the blind spot monitoring and cross traffic alert for backing up.
I have owned a Mazda in the past and loved it. But my current American Chevrolet Sonic ( So called unreliable ) has 130K miles on it with no major mechanical failure ( engine , transmission , suspension , electrical ) have not had a single problem knock on wood. So to my own shock my American car has indeed been reliable
I only posted this because I saw quite a few ( American = unreliable posts ) which everyone is entitled to their opinion I am so not trying to debate. But my Chevrolet has given me no issues
I myself own a 2018 Cruze LT hatch. With the 6 speed auto it really does offer a smooth ride. Not a fan of the auto/stop feature but I bypass that by driving the car with the shift selector on L and change it to 6 to bypass the auto/stop. Why would anyone use the auto stop when a turbo is involved? All that stopping the engine and restarting it will ruin the turbo
I have the same with the RS package and I agree, the start/stop is maddening. Otherwise I’m actually VERY impressed with this car. It’s peppy and good on gas and gas all the creature comforts I enjoy!
For all those whining that the VW Golf isn't in this comparison, it's because the KBB website rated it 8.4 (lowest in class), vs. Cruze 8.7, Civic 9.5, and Mazda3 9.0. For some reason, the 2017 Impreza doesn't have a rating on the website yet.
Almost all recent automatic (...CVT, DCT) cars get real-world MPG "at the low end" of their EPA estimate range, at best, while manuals routinely exceed theirs because the engineers can't program them to the test course.
rtfe83able Well enjoy your ugly car. I’ll enjoy my beautiful, elegant 2018 Mazda 3. I just saw one park in a luxury hotel in downtown Houston. It was next to Cadillacs, and Porches and boy did it look like an expensive car next to them.
happy to hear that; I' m thinking of buying one, as I appreciated the values you mentioned in a test- drive; the looks at first I didn' t like, but gradually I came to be fond of the difference it makes in styling( although not in the category of Alphas I' m driving so far, 156, and Giulietta); the only problem is in Greece where I live Hyundai i30 n costs just 2000 euros more( than the 1.5 turbo civic). It makes one think twice!
As a younger driver, the civic is perfect. It has the best looks imo, drives amazing, great mpg, and accommodates for so much space. I drive 200 miles everyday and I couldn’t have had a better car than this one.
KBB is a Subaru fan boy. The Impresa has the no back seat leg room 2:29 and 3:34 you show this in your own clip but you don't say anything about this large draw back. You were quick to point the lack of leg room out other cars.
Mazda wins because the Honda is missing a few things which are important to me. Such as blind spot monitoring for both sides, homelink garage opener and it doesn't look as nice.
I love my Mazda 3 HB but the competition sure is ramping up. I'd almost prefer the civic or impreza, but I like my good driving feel and looks inside and out. AWD isn't a big deal to me, and the civic I feel like look wise won't hold up as well with how aggressive it looks. The Impreza and the Civic are both the obvious 1st choices, with the Mazda being choice 1.5 if you value dynamic handling and good looks.
American brands aren't necessarily American in terms of parts, labour etc. The Japan cars are more American, especially the Camry and Accord etc. those are top American cars in terms of where they are made, parts sourcing etc...
Wouldn't it have been a better comparison to use the WRX and not the Impreza, especially when comparing it to the Honda Sport Touring? Both list price around $28k
There are so many choices today. I like that KBB simply highlights what each car/model does well, doesn't do well, and who may be best suited to own/drive. I don't like comparison videos that simply says "xyz" is the best car of the bunch because many cars nowadays offer specific features that cater to a specific buyer. One of those examples is the never-ending Golf R v. Focus RS debate. In my opinion, both cars offer attributes/features that cater to a specific group. They're not necessarily an alternative choice to each other. But let's face it, Chevy Cruze is a terrible choice no matter how you look at it :-)
It will be interesting when the redo this test with the new look Volkswagen Golf, Hyundai Elantra GT, and the newly redesigned Kia Forte5 are included.
Ok, as a gearhead and mechanic, the Honda is a good choice. Can't tell you how many times I've seen a 20 plus year old Honda puking every fluid it's got and still runs even with rod knock. Subaru..... Just got my first one ever. 08 Impreza hatchback. Yes I have a problem with being forced to bury the throttle just to go. And yes, its awd is so stupid smart that I've got to drive at an insane and suicidal speed just to break the the ear end loose on gravel. I never liked the Mazda interior because it feels like you have to focus way too much on just the info you are looking for. The Corolla is a fantastic car and a lot of fun If you aren't afraid to shove it past its design limits. To have fun in a rolla, you must treat it like a rental car. I'm not even going to start on Chevy cause I absolutely despise gm vehicles with a passion. That said the Chevy 350 is the best engine ever. No doubt haters are still gonna hate....
All good cars except for the Civic Hatch specifically, design-wise. The sedan is good, but the hatch looks like Honda was forced to make a hatch version of their sedan. It looks like it ends abruptly, almost like the rear doesn't match the rest of the body.
I'm really impressed how good it looks in person, me and my wife went to Honda dealer looking for a Civic sedan, but both of us fall in love with the Hatchback, the design is miles ahead especially in Sport/Sport Touring trim, you should check one out in person.
Every time I drive a car with a CVT it reminds me of the moped I used to ride 20 years ago. CVTs are truly horrible IMO. No one seems to wonder why luxury brands don't typically use them...
Forgot to mention one thing though, although it should be well known knowledge by now. American = Horrible Reliability. Japanese = Excellent Reliability.
Did you just wake up from a decade-long cryogenic sleep? American cars don't have horrible reliability anymore. I'm not saying Japanese is worse, but people tend to forget that cars like Toyota Camry are more American than anything GM or Ford makes, while cars with reliability issues like the automatic Ford Fiesta have very little American involvement at all.
Frank The Rabbit really? Tell that to the 1.6 million Honda v6 owners who didn’t even get a recall for excessive oil consumption that can make the motor nearly fail. Instead we got a technical service bulletin, and Honda won’t even fix the problem for free stating that it’s not related to the excessive oil consumption even tho it is.
1982 wants its argument back. Toyota acceleration. Honda transmissions. Subaru head gaskets and ringlands. Mazda, Mitsubishi, and Nissan just low quality. Every one of them have rust problems.
Wished honda made a sport back type of civic hatch. Basically use the same civic shape but have the entire back lift up, not like this civic hatch design
Usually at this price the SUVs are built on B-segment car platforms. These are C-segment cars. So they have more passenger room and a smoother ride than, say, a Honda HR-V or Chevy Trax; but they get the same or better gas mileage and have sharper handling because the compromises to make an SUV affect those areas (taller height=more frontal area to push through the air and a higher, tippier center of gravity).
The lack of the VW Golf, Hyundai Elantra GT, and Kia Forte5 makes this a poor comparison. All compact hatchbacks should be included to help us make a good decision.
Valid point, but I would like it when they all of them have their refresh or redesign. The new look Golf and Elantra GT redesigns will be out this year.
Most new drivers don't get Civic's because they pay 300-400 MORE for insurance per month. They use that money instead to get a high end luxury European sports car instead and save on insurance.
1. Mazda
2. Honda
3. Subaru

The Subaru looks good. But that Civic looks even better, on top of the awesome interior!
Justin David it looks better in person
I'm totally happy with my 2017 Civic hatchback EX. It's quick, sporty, roomy and looks awesome!
rtfe83able Well enjoy your ugly car. I’ll enjoy my beautiful, elegant 2018 Mazda 3. I just saw one park in a luxury hotel in downtown Houston. It was next to Cadillacs, and Porches and boy did it look like an expensive car next to them.
NC Styles no one fucking cares
ᖇᏋᏉᏋᏁᎯᏁᎿ People will always hate on successful people.
NC Styles what kind of idiot compares a Mazda 3 with a Porsche. Smh
happy to hear that; I' m thinking of buying one, as I appreciated the values you mentioned in a test- drive; the looks at first I didn' t like, but gradually I came to be fond of the difference it makes in styling( although not in the category of Alphas I' m driving so far, 156, and Giulietta); the only problem is in Greece where I live Hyundai i30 n costs just 2000 euros more( than the 1.5 turbo civic). It makes one think twice!
As a younger driver, the civic is perfect. It has the best looks imo, drives amazing, great mpg, and accommodates for so much space. I drive 200 miles everyday and I couldn’t have had a better car than this one.
Mazda ❤️
KBB is a Subaru fan boy. The Impresa has the no back seat leg room 2:29 and 3:34 you show this in your own clip but you don't say anything about this large draw back. You were quick to point the lack of leg room out other cars.
Mazda wins because the Honda is missing a few things which are important to me. Such as blind spot monitoring for both sides, homelink garage opener and it doesn't look as nice.
Mazda 3 - sexy af, hot ride, reliable... what more can a man want?
I personally think the Civic looks a lot better. I’m just not a fan of the NEW 3
I love my Mazda 3 HB but the competition sure is ramping up.
How about the vw golf?
That E46 BMW that passes😂👌🏼
Civic all day
0:29 that Mustang was like ohh fuck wrong car meet
You forgot the Hyundai Elantra GT. As an owner, my opinion is that it's a great car that's very competitive to those four.
I'm glad I chose the Elantra GT over any of these 4. It might not drive as well as the Civic Hatch, but it doesn't look hideous from the rear.
Wait until the 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT comes out. It's even better.
Mazda3 looks so clean look at that hood
What about the Golf?
I have always loved hatchbacks since the amc gremlin no I never had one but my brother had the v8 gremlin
I like the chevy cruze best, looks, mpg, and best proportioned IMO
Probably the worst quality too
@@Hallowsaw Mazda isn't better.
@@YourLocalUkrainianGerman How do you figure?
But how did you retrieve the drone??
I'd go for the Mazda. Most trims available with 3 pedals. Cost to own has been the same as our Hondas.
Why is there no civic hatch review from kbb
1:26 FUNNNNNNN!!!!
But let's face it, Chevy Cruze is a terrible choice no matter how you look at it :-)
I spilled my milk on that last bit lol
I'm sure the civic is nice but when did primer become a color choice?
what about the Toyota/Scion MI
Best car for a new driver? My daughter just got her license and I want her to have something with a lot of safety features.
@Miss Jessica any compact car like the ones tested would work. I have the 2017 Hyundai Elantra SE sedan. it's fantastic. The Kia Soul would also work.
These are definitely not 'small' hatchbacks...they are practically huge cars everywhere else in the world except America.
As long as you're not comparing them to the Suburban...
I would pick the Impreza
I’m sure that Cruze hatchback would sell like hot cakes in Europe, especially with a manual transmission, and that bright red color.
No Toyota Corolla IM?
Sad that nobody will buy the Mazda. It is by far the best and most fun to drive AND has the best laid-out interior IMO
Cole McCray I bought one.
This was great, but I wish you would do a similar comparison of subcompact hatchbacks!
the civic's engine is also made in england or??
what is the color called on the civic?
Impreza does not have a lot of ground clearance.
Prasanna Sayami Subaru has thought of that. That's why they make the XV Crosstrek.
I'll take the Mazda 3
never thought I'd say this but... I'd like to see how the Kia Forte5 would compare here (specifically the SX)
The 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT will be the serious challenger to the Mazda3, Honda Civic and others.
All good cars except for the Civic Hatch specifically, design-wise. The sedan is good, but the hatch looks like Honda was forced to make a hatch version of their sedan. It looks like it ends abruptly, almost like the rear doesn't match the rest of the body.
Chris Sorreda really I think the sedan looks like a stretched out hatch back, and the hatch back looks much better
I respect that. Design is subjective after all 👍🏼
I'm really impressed how good it looks in person, me and my wife went to Honda dealer looking for a Civic sedan, but both of us fall in love with the Hatchback, the design is miles ahead especially in Sport/Sport Touring trim, you should check one out in person.
Looks like it's gonna transform into something.
I just hope they get rid of the huge fake grilles in the bumper covers at the midcycle refresh.
Why ignoring the VW Golf?
Ford Focus not on the comparison?
Every time I drive a car with a CVT it reminds me of the moped I used to ride 20 years ago. CVTs are truly horrible IMO. No one seems to wonder why luxury brands don't typically use them...
Forgot to mention one thing though, although it should be well known knowledge by now.
American = Horrible Reliability.
Japanese = Excellent Reliability.
That's not a great generalization. Chevrolet 4 cylinders are pretty darn reliable.
Every one of them have rust problems.
britton coil The fix for that... replace the PCV valve. $10
"its hard to buy a bad car, but easy to buy the wrong car"
damn, so true.
civic all the way reliablilty and resell value king
Wished honda made a sport back type of civic hatch. Basically use the same civic shape but have the entire back lift up, not like this civic hatch design
The car with the best mpg rules.
Wait then what are the differences between subcompact suvs and hatches then?
Its_All_Kim hatches are significantly smaller
Usually at this price the SUVs are built on B-segment car platforms. These are C-segment cars. So they have more passenger room and a smoother ride than, say, a Honda HR-V or Chevy Trax; but they get the same or better gas mileage and have sharper handling because the compromises to make an SUV affect those areas (taller height=more frontal area to push through the air and a higher, tippier center of gravity).
Looks like it's near Irvine, CA
No Golf? No Focus/Fiesta? I would do an Impreza, Focus/Fiesta, or Mazda. No Honda's or Chevy's, though.
Becuz they cant beat the practicality of these vehicles
What about the Ford Focus?
corolla im?
id still rather buy the subi then the civic
the6cow6god6 Both are better than the Mazda and Cruze.
the6cow6god6 go buy the subie
What about Lexus CT?
Maybe people over at the EPA have no idea how to drive a manual. But there is no such thing as a torque converter auto being more efficient.
It looked like you got some air in the honda, cool color though
The lack of the VW Golf, Hyundai Elantra GT, and Kia Forte5 makes this a poor comparison. All compact hatchbacks should be included to help us make a good decision.
Valid point, but I would like it when they all of them have their refresh or redesign. The new look Golf and Elantra GT redesigns will be out this year.
Most new drivers don't get Civic's because they pay 300-400 MORE for insurance per month. They use that money instead to get a high end luxury European sports car instead and save on insurance.
I think Golfs are to small and don't offer enough rear space, I REALLY like the Imprezza but it's not got the same fun that the Civic has.
Corolla iM?
Just got myself a 2017 imlreza sport. Love it. Lol.
where's the toyota im?
