- The Subaru Impreza has always had an ace in the hole: all-wheel-drive. But does the next-generation Impreza offer more than just a class-exclusive powertrain?

This man could review a donkey and I would still watch it.
Timothy Benavente shut it donkey
COMPLETELY AGREE
One year later and I still agree.
🤣
This is so accurate 🤣
This guy has got to be one of the most humorous humans on earth! Frankly speaking im watching KBb videos because of him. Lol
what the fuck is wrong with you
This car is one of the cutest things ive seen on the road
First time Subaru seems to have nailed the interior design & quality on the Impreza. I do wish however the enginer was beefier (in region of ~170hp) but then there's the incoming WRX.
@Ultraspontane Yeah agreed.
@Ultraspontane The whole appeal of the Impreza is a simple point A to B car. With exceptional handling, reliability and GREAT fuel economy for an AWD. As a added bonus, it holds it's residual value with an iron fist. The option for a stronger engine on their Impreza line would surely cannibalize their WRX lineup to some degree.
@@coffeeaddict1005 subaru could offer the 2.5 i belive it has 30 more hp
If you are 6 feet tall or bigger the Impreza is the roomiest Compact out there, the roominess is impressive.
Petey Loco my 16 yo son is 6’8” and he fits in it!
@@thezucernoodle2345 is that true, my 15 y.o. is 6'3" and growing looking for a good car for him?
thanks for the tip
@@apache-yaquibrown4060get them the manual version. I'm pretty sure they will learn to appreciate that one day
That was a fun tour of the new Impreza. Positives and negative were handled effectively and fairly while the delivery was light and entertaining. Very nicely done.
I Like it.... If you want something comfortable, fuel efficient, practical, but without getting in the SUV territory (maintenance costs and actual acquisition price) that car is a really good option!
Paddle shifters are good for 'downshifting' to use engine braking in slippery downhill situations. But for the record 38mpg isn't bad for an awd car, especially when two generations ago you were lucky to hit 32 and average 26.
I have a manual and it rarely hits 30 mpg. My Camry V6 gave the same mileage I'm getting. Other than that, the Impreza is a very good car.
Excellent review!! Very informative and clearly shows the pros and cons positively! Best UA-cam review on the impreza!!
I watched this to get an idea of what the future holds for the WRX/STI, and was not disappointed. I really liked the extensive and close up shots of the interior, which is a big upgrade from previous models. Would prefer more personal opinions about the car and fewer attempts at comedy, but overall, very helpful.
Good review !!! I like when u guys give information on the trims !!!
honest review straight to the points i like it
It's all about the arm rest. Good review.
haha, i gave up on the Mazda Cx-3 and one of the reasons (actulaly 2nd, beside it being tooo small) was it's lack of armrest (at that point anyway)
No issue with my arm rest in my CX3 not sure what you are whining about.
Wrong.. Psh so dumb
When Id tested it (2015) there was no armest available, on any model
It's not why I bought one but TBH it is the first armrest I like so much I don't even notice it.
This guy's funny. Doesn't take himself too seriously but still professional and informative.
I miss my Impreza, especially since we been having the Winter from H in the Northeast. 😢
I occasionally use my virtual gears in my CVT equipped Subaru. I find them especially useful in limiting downhill speeds, but I don't often use them for just general driving.
Me neither, there isn't really a need. The CVT shifts more than quick enough and I only use the paddle shifter for hard cornering.
Great review! I did the test drive in the winter. I totally agree with your comment. The chassis and the suspension are well designed. The car handles well. I can feel the torque vectoring by braking when cornering. The only problem is the lack of power. With a more powerful engine and a WRX badge, I will buy the new Impreza. Subaru, please bring the hatchback version of the new WRX back to US as soon as possible!
Everyone hated the WRX hatch when it was first launched, now they all want a new one.
I love this video just for the Dan Carlin Hardcore History shoutout
I have a 2018 2.0i Premium and on occasion I do use the 7 simulated ratios to get achieve better engine braking.
Be thankful for the 152hp engine and manual transmission. In Europe, we only get the 116hp 1.6 liter with a CVT.
Great review Sir
Ive got a Suzuki Celerio at the moment, great fun little car but for long term I havnt a clue what to buy. I love the Subaru brand (im in UK) but im concerned about the power in these new models. Im sure for most circumstances its enough, but once im spending on something costing a few quid it has to be the right choice. The Forester XT or STI are still on my list !
Mr Muzio, where do you get your awesome T-shirts from??
Every one of your reviews is gold, btw
Micah you have been hitting the gym, aye? Nice guns!
On glare ice being able to use engine braking,( esp. all 4 wheels), is of great value. As winter in MN. seems to be 6 months, that is beyond the first week.
I like that this guy doesn't take himself too seriously. Hes definitely the best car...reviewer?? on youtube.
Another great reviews, I love your stuff! Great presenter, though what I want to know is.... did you find that audio clip of the porcelain tap, or did some poor schlub have to make it for this video? Haha!
I like the new Impreza quite a lot, though I'm also baffled as to why they won't put (even manual) lumbar support in the front seats. I have a 2001 Outback with a lumbar lever on the driver's seat... I mean c'mon, that was 16 years ago! I think we're well past the "Impreza solely as cheap transportation with no frills" stage. :-)
Got to give them thanks for at least still offering a manual transmission, where many others do not.
My biggest complaints are no standard LED headlights on the lower trims and no active torque vectoring (only the Sport trim).
What's the long term reliability & maintenance costs like on the last gen imprezas..?
I own one since the last 6 weeks, but do not use the CVT paddle shifters
these are very tempting considering 8 months that we have snow in Canakstan. and -20 fighting for traction in a fwd....
Dan Carlin is Awesome! Makes me like your review even more. I'll give you 2 likes!
I’ve used the 7 virtual gears more then a year after owning
Prius and Impreza hatchback which have better towing capacity? Which can be slept in more comfortably?
Honestly my lease is up in 2018 and I am debating between this and a VW golf
I work as a mechanic for Subaru and I almost only use tge paddles because they don't offer a manual in Australia (big mistake in my opinion) the only manual Subarus we have are wrx's (in the new generations
And and Zach should do team reviews ... on all cars, always
Great review! Love our 2015 Impreza.
ron s time to upgrade!?
Yep my love my 2016! Wish I could've waited but no regrets getting the 2016!
Upgrade? Yes! Also considering the next gen crosstrek
That podcast was a Hardcore History episode!! History buffs unite
how comfortable is the ride/suspension?
So do most subarus have the option of potatoes and cheese melted into all wheel drive? I'm asking because I've heard harsh reviews on the cheeseburgers and french fries cvt.
That was an enjoyable review. I can see that compared with the US version, the Australian version is even better value for money, which is contrary to the usual state of affairs where everything seems to be hit with the mythical 'Australia tax'.
The only thing holding this car back is the lack of torque and power. Subaru should offer a low pressure turbo model to extract some decent driving for this car.
Thank you! We appreciate your feedback.
Did they fix the engine problems?
This is a surprisingly well done review. I've paid close attention to all the reviews for this car. The consensus is clear: this is a very good car that misses greatness by a small margin. The biggest detraction is the under-powered engine. I assume Subaru will respond to that. Everything else seems right, and it seems the CVT is surprising reviewers who automatically hate CVTs. Since this design is the keystone for the next generation of Subies, it is nice to see them start so well.
Steve Grooms the same engine is in the Subaru BRZ, with 200 hp. I think this one is just tuned for fuel economy and reliability.
Thanks for the reply. And thanks for a helpful, entertaining review
Steve Grooms I own one. They've done a good job making the meager power feel sufficient, even peppy under most situations. You get a decent amount of torque when going from a stop, and while you do need to be heavy footed at higher speeds, I've never been frustrated or in a compromising situation. It's no WRX, but it's totally sufficient.
i think the 170hp and 170ft lbs of the older 2.5i is JUST enough.. Anything less is terrible. We should have 180 to 200 HP NA Imprezas by now, nit this garbage 2.0L 150HP BS. I won't buy one. They are going in the wrong direction. Where's the old "RS" spirit in the line-up?
Well done review? Subaru claims that impreza is an all-wheel drive car but KBB says that it is used to be AWD and now powered by two wheels. Should I believe on this review or Subaru? And to those who claim they own one, can you please confirm if it is still an AWD car or just powered by two wheels.
Test drove a 2018 impreza hatch last week. The lack of power kinda killed my excitement and I'm not a quick driver. The crosstrek must feel even slower. The added price over a Corolla doesn't seem worth it to me. The 5 speed manual needs a 6th gear. It makes it feel inefficient on the highway. I like Honda but I don't like the new civics and I'm not sure I trust Hyundai reliability yet.
can you guys do awd cars review
Love my Sport edition i wish it could be faster.
Is the blue house @ 5:34 the house from the show “the middle” ? Lol 😂
Hey you should try out for a car show like Top Gear or something.
Who needs sound system, infotainment in a Subaru? The thrill is the drive
I still wonder why the Impreza & WRX were split. Just like the Skyline & GTR.
Damn, he loves that Impreza. I'm car shopping and he hated every other car that I was thinking about. LOL
I own the press Model lithium red sedan with cvt 2017 Impreza Sport with 18's 0 to 30 the cvt dominates get 60mph every time in the simulated 2 gear I have 11,000 miles and it just competes with much faster cars tourqe vectring allows crazy cornering speed like 40mph at at a 90% on ramp access it just says I saved 10grand on a nicer car!
This car has everything one could want, less a little more power. Aside from the lack of pep, I very much enjoy this little gem.
I like this car not bad.
Even the design simple but enticing.
Please do the VW Atlas!
Im currently driving a 370z and want this car as my daily driver and cant decide on standard transmission or cvt..
on one hand I already have a manual car but on the other kanual is so much fun..
I really wasnt excited at how light and .. "dead" the clutch felt on this car when I test drove it.. why is it so light and it felt like it had no bite point. its so alien to me especially coming from a 370Z with a stupid clutch.
cvt also has better fuel economy.. what to choose.. what to choose..
I have a 350z Stick shift and van safely recommend the CVT for you, just get a Premium so you can manually control the gears. No benefit to a stick in this car, especially the one they offer.
I guess it is quite Imprezav then.
SDav21 LOL except for that weak ass engine.
Brutha Dnubian The norm of this class is 150hp so the power is competitive.
Brutha Dnubian the exit is over there
Just got one of these, but my only complaint so far is the speakers sound pretty muffled. Is that just the quality of speakers in the base model, or did I get dud speakers?
Did you check the EQ settings? Make sure everything is at the factory setting. That being said the premium does have 6 speakers instead of 4 and sounds much better.
Where did you get the t-shirt?😬
5:35 This is defenitly the house in The middle tv serie! Am I the only one who notice it ?
Someone told me the Impreza was the Crosstrek without the higher center of gravity and cladding and I thought ok so I'd look at it because I like the Crosstrek. And then someone said they wanted the WRX engine and i thought no that's not really necessary. If I wanted less gas mileage I'd just get a Tahoe. We used to look at a vehicle and if it was 150 hp and similar torque it wouldn't have been much giddyup because of the weight of the vehicle and the final gear drive. (That's why Honda would use really low gearing like 4.56 or so so there would be more performance with less hp.) But now all bets are off because we have more gears. A six speed or an 8 speed can utilize power better than a 4 speed. A 4 speed had one good deeper gear and then by the third gear you were at 1:1 and the 4th were in Overdrive (~.67-.75). But with a six speed you have three gears for torque multiplication and then your typical last 3 ratios. So with multiple gears you can get more out of 155hp than you would have used to with like 180hp. So, no i don't really need the WRX hp and torque numbers to feel like I've got power. Those numbers have gotten perception out of whack. And there again most people are looking strictly at hp and it's torque that gets the vehicle moving. That's why a little diesel 4 cylinder with a lot more torque and a little hp can have more git-er-done than a similar size gas engine with a lot more hp and less torque. So when I said i had a gutless 160hp V6 in a 4700 pound vehicle and then someone comes along and says, "we have 160 hp and it's plenty" it's probably because the latter is a lot lighter and geared a lot better. So anyway I'm told the Impreza has a lot of leg room too. That's a plus for tall people. Now to look into longevity. Is that 2.0 going to last a quarter million miles or more? I'm told the Impreza can be had with a manual transmission and since I don't want to spend $4500 for a CVT transmission that's a really good thing.
Has subie addressed the oil issues and head gasket problems?
Yes, years ago. These mostly exist on the Internet, I've yet to meet any real people who had this issue. There's a ton of Subaru's in Chicago and never found an owner with a problem.
why CVT :( I would love to buy this one with a normal Automatic!.
Oh it's not that bad, trust me.
So much front overhang on this thing. Perhaps another foot or more should have been added whilst they were at it, to enhance its appearance.
Cool Shirt!
Does the US spec have electronic park brake as an option? Australian models have the Electronic park brake as standard across the range
hand brake for parking only, I'm not a fan of the electronic one, here in Canada, same as US, no tire pressure monitoring system like in the US
No we do havie tire pressure monitoring system. Even the last generation had them.
I like this. A cheap car that does not scream "I'M A CHEAP CAR!" Instead, "Inexpensive."
Mazda3 or Impreza? (hatchback) also pls let me know if any other hatchbacks are better than it :)
Volkswagen Golf and Honda Civic , Don't sleep on the Hyundai Elantra GT, Kia Forte or the new Toyota Corolla hatchback
Great video great arm rest
Another gud review'; u boys gonna do the crosstrek ? :)
I laughed when I saw him running to the coffee shop.
Hating CVTs is fashionable, just like it was to hate Fuel Injection and ABS brakes. I hate most automatics, this one works so well I don't mind not having a stick. My weekend car is a manual but never again for a daily driver.
Anyone have one of these and tell what real world fuel mileage your getting? Manual or cvt.
Chad Spidle I’ve got an automatic sedan model. I drive somewhat aggressively, lead foot and all but I’m managing 22 mpg, mainly driving on country/city roads
Lol at the reverse roller blading
Also love the shirt 7:09.
If you live where you get bad weather, the Subaru is even a better choice over the others. Surprised the Honda Civic got bad reviews in Consumer Reports.
Not really bad reviews, just bad report cards from subscribers.
Yeah lately Honda been having issues. No one wants to agree but look it up and it's no secret.
True freeway 0-60
7 seconds(auto)
9-10 seconds (paddles)
2017 Cvt-hatch
Serious though? 7 seconds?
I love this thing
Dan Carlin's Hardcore History!! nice
Micah rollerblades on 3 wheel seba/FRs. Excellent choice.
Halogen headlights never die...
BTW when is this thing coming to Europe? We still have the old gen.
Actually... We don't even have that. STi or go home. No normal version here.
In Germany, Austria and Switzerland we still get the normal hatchback with either 1.6 or 2.0 gasoline engine or a 2.0 Diesel. So we have even more engine options than in the US XD
not fair!
The 1.6 is underpowered and the Boxer Diesel was a reliability disaster. Read up on it.
Halogen headlights was un conventions law
Well, there should be a law to make HIDs and LEDs standard.
Wouldn't the hatch be closed, hence stopping your skates from flying off? Unless you often drive off with the hatch open. If so, you have bigger problems that you think. The lip being a benefit doesn't make sense.
infamousnachi it's so that if you park on a hill and open the hatch up your stuff dosnt roll down the hill
I dont get why the manual is not 6speeds….
Hardcore History! A good choice.
Great review. Please do the 2018 crosstrek when it debuts!
Does the Impreza have heated rear seats?
No.
1:48 I live a block away from that coffee shop
Good little cars
How's driving, tech, luxurious, and overall looks vs mazda3?
Tech Defender both of them are good. You'll be more satisfied with the Mazda3 but it will be cramped. Overall both are good cars.
Both are very good and my favorites in the Hatchback class. If you are Tall get the Subaru.
drag race between this and a Corolla. make it happen Micah
Am I the only one that noticed The Middle house at 5:35?
Reliability is the main thing guys.
2:04 is not needed. Why compare an AWD to FWD cars for MPGs?
All the hipster coffee shops are on 4th street in long beach
My car feels like it's wobbling around on certain parts of the freeway. Is it because of the sport tune suspention/18in tires on the SPORT trim. Has anybody experiance something similar. Just wondering if it's normal.
It's the rocky feel from the boxer engine. It's normal to have that feel from Subaru.
I don't think so Joshua. It only does it on the same lane at the same part of the freway so i'm pretty sure it's the suspention. I just didn't think it wouldn't wobble that much. My wife was like was is wrong with your car the first time she experienced it. I know Michigan doesn't have the best roads but that can get very annoying on a long trip. Thanks for the feedback though.
Keep me updated because I have the Limited model and I haven't any issues so far. If I experience this then I may know what it is.
I will but like i said i just think it's so sensitive due to the 18 tires and "sport" tune suspention on the Sport trim. 90% of the times you don't feel anything. I blame the crapy roads of Michigan for the 10%.
The dashboard looks huge, like from an SUV
As a mid-30s guy, it's this, the Mazda3, or the Golf for me. The rest are just too value or young feeling/looking. The Civic is a fantastic car but looks like it was designed for a 16 year old boy.
you talk like you're in your 60s , mid 30s is not old .
Agreed. I should add context... I work in a conservative, professional environment where what you drive to work matters, unfortunately. Most of my peers drive luxury family cars (because they don't have a fuckton of student loans like I still do!)
mistertee There's no age for the love of cars.
I'm in agreeance. I'm 35 and I would feel like a douche driving a WRX at this age.
It's not about Egos, it's about not making a career harder than it already is. I agree with you but I've been in industries where you couldn't have to bad or to nice of a car. I was going to buy a Base Porsche Macan but I can't show up to work in that, I wouldn't get hired as much and the Envy and hate would make my job much harder.
Impressive vehicle. I like what Subaru is doing lately.
With so many excellent competitors, must be hard for Impreza.
It need better design, more exotic more better.
The competitors are too small inside and most aren't as good in ride comfort.
This guy ran to his coffee joint lol
