      Literally at the time of purchase in a smiths parking lot, dropped the clutch, bike stalled and down it went.

    More times than I care to think about. All but once in the parking lots I practice in. Almost every time it was insufficient power to the rear wheel. When I got my first big boy bike(81 Honda CB750) I dropped it twice the first day I bought it. Took a turn wide in second gear and hit the curb. When I finished riding, I was turning on a downhill gravel grade into a barn. I hit the front brake and dumped it on the other side. That was 1994. You learn more from failure than success.

      We definitely learn more from our mistakes. Drops happen, the important thing is to pick it up and keep riding. 😜

    Great information. And the fact that you actually videoed yourself dropping your bike brought back some very bad memories from the past. Unpleasant to watch, and an altogether too familiar feeling. Haven't dropped my bike during slow speed riding in a long time, but I'm not doing these drills either. I'll have to get back to them. I did just have a drop where I stopped, forgot to put down the kickstand and went to get off the bike. That didn't end well. Keep up the great videos!

    I have a v strom and am a new rider. I was parking up and I turned the bars to the right and snatched the front break and I fell over to the right. The motorcycle fell on top of me and I injured my shoulder, ribs and elbow. On top of that , I destroyed the indicator and bar end and hand guard. Im going to be hurt for a few weeks and will have to digest your video to try to get some confidence back.

    • @mototipz
      @mototipz  Рік тому

      Sorry to hear about your injuries. The video covers it, but you definitely have to be careful grabbing the front brake while going slow with the bars turned. The rear brake can be more helpful when parking.

    It’s easier to turn and lean IF you truly turn your head. “Looking” L or R isn’t enough. Ya gotta turn yer head.
    What makes it easier is you stop fixating on things like bar angle and bike angle … because you’re not seeing them. Those things “magically” take care of themselves.
    Keep a minimum pace going, and don’t freak out when you scrape a foot peg.

    • @mototipz
      @mototipz  2 роки тому

      Very good information. It's definitely important to turn your head and even your chest in the direction you want to go. Like you said the other things kind of sort themselves out and naturally fall into place. 👍

    3:38 to 4:03 indeed.
    That's why IF you've become great at sub 20ft turns and you want to tighten them up without adding any noticable lean angle use the rear brake and just tiny feather touches of it...
    It's less jarring than the front allows dining tuned tighter turns..as in barely 5 percent of that of the rear brake

    Greetings,
    This is perhaps the best video on this subject on UA-cam. I takes numerous classes with SoCal PD’s covering this topic extensively and have gotten pretty good. However, my ability to transfer that knowledge to my daughter has been tough as I am not an instructor. You break it down in a manner that I can easily transfer this to her.

    never understood the phrase "weight the outside peg" if your pushing down on the outside peg your leaning into the turn were if you push on the inside peg your leaning the bike plus counter weighting

    13:21 to 13:28 I'll bet you anything from the sound of that bike that at the 65 percent distance mark of making that u turn... this guy gentle raised the engine rpm some fast and set it at a set rpm range and was letting out the friction zone barely 5 to 10mms at most to help it sustain that balanced lean and power through to finish it.

    Hardest thing for me is stop and go traffic on some two lane country roads with 4 way stops. I usually just stop and let the car in front move up a couple of car lengths before I move forward so I don’t have to move so slow. Any other tips for this?

    • @mototipz
      @mototipz  2 роки тому +1

      Go to a parking and try these two drills. First, while riding at 5-10 mph practice going about 30 feet or 3 parking stalls and stopping. Do 10 stops putting just your left foot down and then 10 stops putting just you right foot down. This will get you more comfortable starting and stopping. Once you're comfortable with that, try riding as slow as you can in a straight line for about 60 feet.

    I don’t quite understand the point of the friction zone, at least for my bike
    I’m assuming bigger, more powerful bikes have a higher idle speed, 15 mph for example. In that case, I get it, you need the friction zone to get fractional power so that you can maintain the 7-9mph zone for slow speed drills
    But my 400cc sport bike idles at 4-5 mph, I feel like I need full clutch engagement plus a bit of throttle, otherwise I’d be too slow for slow speed and U turn drills. Is there any point for me to be in the friction zone?

    Hello! Great video! I've found your channel through Motojitsu and I think both are great sources of riding knowledge. Now, I'm riding now for around 14 years and covered over 100k miles on various bikes - so, I know it's nothing probably when compared to you or some other riders but... I wouldn't say I'm new to riding either. This slow riding is seriously challenging. But I'm determined to improve.. Why I hear you asking? My recent bike trip to Alps... Several high mountain passes which I have managed to survive without dropping the bike BUT I could have enjoyed it so much more with better slow riding techniques. Plus... this scenario : oh look! Such a nice place! Let's turn around (narrow road)?! ... being a frightening thought. Well, I have enough of this. Went yesterday and practiced on my bike - for now I was reassured that I can't do these slow maneuvers. However, I've never dropped the bike in such scenarios, so I hope that what you and Greg are saying (practice will make you better) will become reality. Again, thank you for this video! 👌🏻

    • @mototipz
      @mototipz  2 роки тому +1

      Sounds like an amazing trip. The mountain roads are tight so being able to make those tight u-turns would definitely help.

      @@mototipz exactly. U-turns are the Achilles' heel for so many riders (of course myself including). It can only get better 😉 🤞🏻

    Luckily, I haven't dropped mine yet(touches wood), I really hurt my knee not so long ago, because I foolishly pulled the clutch all the way in- on a fairly tight and leaned right turn on a figure 8, and stupidly put my right foot down- trying to save the bike from falling... Lesson learned. Painfully. Knee was f***ed for like a week. Again I'm lucky my bike only weighs ~140kg.

    • @mototipz
      @mototipz  2 роки тому +2

      Putting your foot down is a natural reaction. Have to learn to trust yourself and let out on the clutch. But if the motorcycles going to fall, better to risk a scratch than a long term injury...

    I have question...I have no problem doing u turns but I can feel my arm pulling one of the handle bars when Im leaning the bike so my question is...is that still fear of full locking the handle bars? also I have a dct so no clutch just throttle and brake..

    • @mototipz
      @mototipz  2 роки тому +1

      With a DCT your rear brake acts like your clutch. You have to be careful though and use very light pressure on the rear brake. When you're at full lock and leaning your inside arm will be pulling the bar towards you. Check out MotoJitsu's channel, he has a couple videos demoing full lock turns on a Goldwing with DCT.

    can you lean too much? how much should your bike be leaning?

    • @mototipz
      @mototipz  Рік тому

      No not really. The faster you go, the more you need to lean.

  • @yl4970
    @yl4970 2 роки тому

    MIke, have a question: Once in a while we watch videos like yours, or Greg's, in which we are told that when you execute a U-turn, that just before you make the turn you counter steer. To me it means that if I want to lean to the left, that I first have to turn handlebar to the right just like we do in high speed. So, is this indeed true that counter steering works at such low speed such as 8 to 10 MPH? Can you comment on this and do you yourself do so? Many thanks for your great videos, and clarity of your own voice and audio, not so with many youtubers!

    • @mototipz
      @mototipz  2 роки тому +1

      A little bit of counter steer helps initiate the lean. Some people even do a more pronounced jog before the U-turn. Once the motorcycle starts leaning then the bars turn in the direction you want to go. On my u-turn video I show it in slow motion.
      It took me a couple of videos to get the audio worked out and figure out a good microphone setup 😜

  • @RideLikeAChamp
    @RideLikeAChamp Рік тому

    Not entirely correct , this advice is for beginners not having much throttle control or self steering concept. I do fogure 8 within 4 parking spaces with no clutch or rear brake , sone times with front brake within 4 parking spaces. All the time looking in front of ky front tire and some times with eyes closed.
