#2 is a no-go for me due to limited range of motion. I've installed convex mirrors to eliminate my blind spots to compensate.
"Lean the bike more than you!" is the BEST tip, skipped by the other guys.
Max counter weighting and shrink bike geometry , only with that i can passed the license test in here ( indonesia)
63 years of riding and this video just dramatically changed my U-turns. I went and practiced it. Wow, thanks! (Especially more speed).
Got my attention again... I'm 70; Bought my first bike in a box for 50$ in 1974, when I left the army. Rebuilt it and rode the bejesus out of it, til it blew up a couple of weeks later...
Have never doubted that the most fun you can have with your clothes on, is on a motorcycle. AND, the fact that they keep getting faster, and better able to keep you in the saddle when the cagers get crazy...OR the weather, or the road gets ugly...
You are an awesome teacher. For one so young, to understand the hurdles and fear based barriers that inhibit learning for beginners And old farts like me, who have ridden a ton of miles( pardon me, millions of kilometers), and Never learned these skills; through ego based ignorance or lack of real hard ass mile lessons.
thanks
I'm currently preparing for my driving license and each video you post is pure gold. I've applied your recommendation to look behind when making figure 8, which greatly improved my skill. Looking forward to apply your recommendations on the road. All the best from Romania!
Same here from Serbia! I am having more problems with low speed then fast riding.
Out of all the ones mentioned -> Leaning the bike more than me, helped me a lot personally.
Thanks for all the daily lessons!!
That one handed weave, that's chad level control man! Good shit Greg
My brc (basic rider course in Navy terminology) instructor taught us everything that you did, and it made slow speed maneuvers extremely easy. She did use the term counter balancing, but she had to go by the curriculum.
The best thing about this video is that it lays out the plan very assertively.
Clutch throttle first
Brakes second
Love all these videos. Next Monday, I take my BRS (Basic Rider Skills) course. For the past 2 weeks, I've been practicing taking off in straight line (easy), taking off into 90 degree turn (incredibly difficult / scary). I had my first ride yesterday where I was relaxed enough to enjoy it. Looking forward to many more years of safe riding.
Thank you again, Greg. You are the best. I always listen intently to whatever you have to say because I have learned so much just from watching your videos and then practicing them.
My driver's test is in 1,5 week and this is my Achilles heel for sure. I've fallen off the bike twice in slow speed U-turns, and I've lost confidence in myself. These tips are great, I hope I'll do better after knowing this.
Wenn I took my license I dropped the bike 3 times and lost all confidence in my self.. I just got angry at my self and said to my self. “You will learn that!” And practiced a ton! Figure 8s and cirkels.
Got the license first time with no mistakes..
I’m still a little nervous wenn doing slow maneuvers, but it gets better just practice!
I also dropped it multiple times on private roads when practicing for the test. I got the license now though. Don't make falls stop you. There's people who take 50+ hours classes and fail their tests 10+ times
You got this, you're not them
And even if you were, you'd still get there eventually
@@lIlIllIlIllIlllIllIIIIIIIIIlII thank you, this actually helped me lift myself up.
@@Mr450pro yeah I try to stay determined. I will keep practicing after I eventually get my lice. Thank you
Thanks for this video. I was doing some of your drills and thought I was going too fast and I should try to go as slow as possible. I do feel it has helped me with my clutch control but I could never turn tight enough in my opinion. Thanks for this video.
I definitely been doing my slow speed too slow. Thank you for the tip. I also like the description stay upright and lean your bike over better than the term counterbalance.... It makes it more clear and seem less complicated.
This was the most difficult part of my MSF course. Thank you for this explanation. It really helped me understand the process.
Me too, was hung up on looking at the cones haha
Same here, the figure-8 was the trickiest part for me because I was going way too slow.
Your audio quality is great. As of course is your instructions. Like the fact that you keep trying to come up with better ways to explain slow speed maneuvering in your many videos.
Best explanation and best tips ever!! Could not be more on point! Love the video!
Look 10 ft further or even better, look at your rear plate, really helps!
Your channel is the best I have come across. The information you have in them is priceless .
Also: consciously countersteer.
If you’re struggling to make a u-turn you probably need to countersteer the damn thing a whole lot more than you think.
Which also means - don’t stick too close to the curb when starting a u-turn. You need some space for that aggressive countersteer which will lean the bike enough to actually make the uturn.
I had my life flash 📸 Long story short bout 75 80ishh DEER ..... it would have killed me if i had not swerved. I felt a slight tap on me left foot . ... thought i was in the clear ..... nope ..... broke my radiator neck and poked several holes in the lower hose . Lucky luckyyy nothing to do with u turns by the way .
This was really helpful! Thanks!
I'm a new rider at 40. Thank you for all your helpful videos!
These are all good tips! I have trouble doing all of these things, because I have been afraid to do them.
Because of you I do make sure before or after every ride I’m practicing something different everyday
that rear brake talk was completely true for me, had a cb125 in perfect working order in Australia, could do all the slow speed riding things pretty well, moved to Indonesia and got myself a 20 year old bike that's half falling apart and the rear brake is really weird and practically unusable, now I can't even U-turn. Need to practice more without it.
i made it yesterday and im staring to get rid of those chicken strips i learned a lot following your course and your videos on youtube thanks greg now im on my way increase speed in turn
Always quality instruction.
Thank you sir you’ve given me more confidence sir 👍🏼
Your 15 min/day advice helped me a lot.
Same here… every ride home from work I hit an open parking lot for 10 to 15 minutes..
Am really want get better this best ,.master that machine . So much best advice ,short ,straight to the points. Throttle, clutch control 80 percent there, counter steer properly. Finesse front brake. Total control machine.
Sir please come up a video on proper clutch throttle and friction zone. Like what is the position of clutch on u turnns or when the bike is leaning etc..?
That can depend on the individual bike and as well as any of the following combinations:
1. stock clutch lever?
2. aftermarket adjustable clutch lever and if so..WHERE is the clutch lever adjusted to?
Your friction zone ..PER BIKE...per any combo OF 1 AND/OR 2 can depend on many things.
This is something you must practice on your own to learn where the friction zone begins..and barely where it ends at what little mm of distance.
When you're doing tight u turns ( such as at or shorter than 20 feet), your clutch lever should be at the outer end of the friction zone..
Mean if your friction zone on your clutch lever is a total lever extent distance of 1 inch...your lever should be extended to 85 to 95 % of barely touching that final limit of that friction zone READY..to let go enough to extend out to give the bike full power the nano second you feel the bike falling fast as you are usually, by that time..completely 75% of the u turn.
I have found for me., personally, doing the following has helped me do my tight u turns better and get better at them while already moving.
1. Bike sitting still not moving .... but cranked and ready in first gear
2. .... turn the handle bars full lock to the left
3. ensure you have that clutch level to the barely millimeter point of if you slowly let it out even a pinky's finger nail distance ( 2 or 5 mm's) you can feel it begin to move . but keep the lever just BARELY pulled in ..micro meter..barely..enough to where the bike doesn't move. ....
4. Now put your right foot on the peg holding some weight on it purposely..not half assed either. while maintaining that right foot peg weight...lean the bike some to the left, LOOK as much towards behind you to left as you can ( even if you're facing 12 o clock..try to look at 7:30 or 8 ) ..
5. Now..raise the throttle to and try to basically lock that throttle at around 20 percent ( this amount can vary from bike to bike..engine size to engine size... etc but 20 percent is a reasonable start here. change higher or lower to your comfort). while locking the amount of throttle you have open, maintaining that right foot peg weight, count to 2.5 normal actual time speed as you're slowly releasing the clutch.
If you find doing this while putting both tires on a parking lot space's divider line and that you can't yet connect the bike to the 2nd one away from you ( which would be around 18 or 16 foot)..no sweat...baby step into it. NO shame in that.
AS you practice this more, you'll eventually be able to do Greg's ( motojitsu's) blue belt level of the parking spaces sort of slalom drill no problem like a snake that continously stops at each east and west facing direction turning left and stopping as you do a full u turn...then right and stopping..etc..etc..
If you can only do Every other parking spot to start off with. That's fine.
But as hard and complicated as this may sound..YOu'll quickly and better face your fears of dropping the bike and learn how much clutch-speed-letting-out versus a certain amount of throttle vs beginning lean combo....will lead to awesome successful u turns to the point they become like walking.
=== I do Uber Eats delivers on my cb500x and I find now I can do these from-dead-stop u turns within 17 feet with reasonable ease from right on neighborhood streets.
These fundamentals are golden, thanks as always motojitsu
Thank you again! Will try to stop using rear brake! If I crash is your fault!
I gotta admit because of your advise on always practicing and learning more, I signed up for a BRC with Total Control. I live in northeast Pa and I’ve been riding for 3 seasons now but never had any formal training. Really looking forward to honing my skills and if all goes well I want to go back for the intermediate and advanced courses!!
good mindset :) I've taught all those courses for years. You'll learn a lot if you take them all and then spend a lot of time practicing what you were taught...then get into American Supercamp and Champ School. MotoJitsu.com/courses
Thanks MJ.
Ever since I started watching your videos, that’s my habit every time I ride hit the parking lot before or after
I’ll admit I rely on the rear brake and am often too slow with my U-turns. Need to go practice 💪
Your tips and tricks are so good that’s again moto jitsu
Good stuff bro !!
Trying to take all this in, in preparation for my MSF course in a couple of weeks.
An interesting situation to address is making a u-turn at an intersection when you're behind a car. Sometime the car ahead of you is unsure if they have the turning radius and make a choppy u-turn making us have to change our speed throughout a u-turn. Definitely need to practice these tips. I've been riding since 2018 and still have hesitancy when doing u-turns.
That is a helpful tutorial, this and the lesson on Lion King syndrome on sports bikes
Tysm
Thanks 💯
today i failed my exam.
and that’s because i was too scared and ansious on the figures 8.
i did the absolute opposite of what you teached in this video.
i’m disapointed, but all i can do is pratice more and more!
thanks for the tips!
Shame about how your test went. Better luck next time round. You also might want to look up the past tense of teach.
Practice like crazy and turn your weakness into a strength. Safer and happier in the end. You got this.
Sorry to hear. Happy to say I just passed my road test on Wednesday, after not riding for months and only getting 30 mins of seat time on a grom before I took the test. Was a bit anxious about the circles part, but ultimately went ok. No foot down.
I just counter steer doing slow speed anything. Its way more comfortable and natural I do it automatically like instinct. If you baby it the motorcycle feels akward it wants you to boss it around. But im guilty of leaning more than the bike on slow speed turns in a parking lot.
Love how this channel pops up 1st on my feed so much
Thanks!
glad it helped!! 1,100+ more videos to go through!
Thank you Sir
My exam is tomorrow and my figure 8's aren't famous simply because I'm afraid of putting speed on the bike. I know that less speed makes it difficult but the fear tells me to slow down and therefore I tend to put the foot down. To look where I want to go is another thing because I'm too focused on balance due to going too slow. I only have a couple more hours (tops) to practice tomorrow before the exam. Thank you for the tips.
Best of luck.
@@patrickmba7638 Thank you!
So, what was the outcome?
All good tips.
I knew I was going too slow .. just got the app so I’ll be dedicating my time practicing this week and forever on wards 😅
Just picked up a CFMoto 300SS as a little toy while I save up to replace my stolen bike. Can't wait to get back to practicing
Nice.. wish I could do the same.
Good stuff! I need to make the handlebars my b- I mean friend
What!!! No rear brake??? Motorman Jerry Palladino would have a fit!!!!! LOL. Actually, I've been practising MJ low speed turning (and getting better) for quite a while now. Did a nice slick U turn yesterday in a driveway where once I wobbled around. I have to say that the sense of satisfaction I get from doing the MJ techniques lifts my endorphins!
Maybe next time I will try that going faster on my zero that's the one I struggle with the handlebars don't turn barely at all. But I still use a crap ton of rear brake everywhere.
Perfect 💪💪🇵🇭
He's so good!!!!
Okay, just passed the HD MSF, but the u-turn was the only place where I got demerited.
How timely!
Having fun with the bike in a lot also gets you closer with it. You’ll be much more in tune. My daughter and I play follow the leader in a H.S. lot. Try to get creative
🏴love from Scotland 🏴
New mic? Sound is very good
Same as always
I thought this was common knowledge, but still good explanations I guess. In Belgium at least you need to do "8" (two circles small radius) for the exam.
So what? Doesn’t mean you’ve mastered it or there’s no room for improvement
I feel the hardest part for me is having the confidence to -look behind me- ...super scary...will keep practicing 😅
Thanks! Ha ha, you have just described me so accurately, I am guilty of all the sins in this video. This needs a personal touch I should go out with this video after I am done with the bike repair. By the way if you people have community parks that look that good then I know what the problem is with my country we have a fast diminishing Sense of community it's nasty. But thanks a lot.
LMAO Make that bike your BI..FRIEND. It really is funny how pointing your head into that direction really causes the bike to move in that direction especially on U turns where it seems daunting at first because you want to make sure you make the clearance especially if there’s a car wanting to turn into that lane-but keeping your eyes on the intended path really works!
😀. Caught that mid air lay up switch too.
Yeah this was my problem. Going to slow
In circuit race why they lean and fast in corner? If they want avoid crash?
And you said less lean angle less risk in cornering. So what's prons and cons more lean vs less lean
No one is talking about racing or track days where they have perfect pavement and no hazards dude
What about sports bikes whos bars dont turn all the way like others?
doesn't matter
« Learn the bike under you. » That’s what clicked with me.
Sir were you using countersteering while leaning the bike before turn?
Yup
Yep respect, but what about in the rain seeing is believing, good luck 👍
Have videos of a lot of rain riding already
@@MotoJitsu okay brilliant, but can you tell me which one is the uturns in the rain ? I live in the UK and rain we have lots of lol thanks motojitsu
I have rain riding videos...and u-turn videos...u-turns in the rain is the exact same
@MotoJitsu okay tgank you
Should I try to full-lock the handlebars in order to do an u-turn?
no need
Do you turn your handle to the limit? Is it good or rare done?
No
Make that bike your bbbbFRIEND!
In which gear? The 1st gear?
yup
Oh but dragging that real brake is quite handy 😉
oh cool. A smart guy. Actually if it wasn’t then surely your idol wouldn’t actually teach its usage in the advanced classes. But being cute is important to you eh?
Not scared of the bike but scared that if I make a mistake my bike is gonna be busted and it’s going to make me sad.
Get crash bars
@@MotoJitsu I’ve been looking for frame sliders would that be sufficient?
There’s always a risk
Do we have a T-shirt for: No Rear Break For You?
Why am I confident changing left u turn but not right? Tia
ua-cam.com/video/OaB-iXliFfk/v-deo.html
I don't do it every time but parking lot playing sure helps!
W
Great video, as always, Greg. You helped me immensely when I began riding and were actually the first UA-camr I subscribed to. I still think your video on swerving is the absolute best there is! ua-cam.com/video/_O0aEN-fN00/v-deo.html In this video, I think your guidance on letting the bike lean beneath you is key. Too many people misunderstand lean and I think that's why they find lean to be intimidating. Kudos on your growing success, man! All the best to you and your family. ✌🤘
Our instructors tell us to NOT lean the bike while doing U-Turns. It drives me nuts.
Then they should be fired
😂 your friend...almost
POV: You being assertive with the bike gets the admiration of a female. ;D With all due respect, I'd take your lead. 🙏
MAKE THE BIKE YOUR P- friend.
Make the bike your P,,,, friend 😊
I don’t get the statement look behind you.
you don't get it?
Your rear brake comment is probably true but you also did the U-turn in a lot more than two parking spaces when you try to give the example
who cares?
@@MotoJitsu well you can't be perfect every time. But I try and do u turns in two parking spaces as well. If you're going to tell people to practice and that you like doing them in two spaces yourself. Following it up by saying it doesn't matter what bike you have and do it without the rear brake just use the throttle. Ok fine, but you probably should be able to back it up; like i know you can; instead of taking nearly an additional parking space. I need to practice more and I get mad at myself that I can't do it in two.
So I didn't do it in this video, I can't?
@@MotoJitsu you clearly don't read everything or listen to people entirely. Halfway down my message I said you probably should be able to back it up like I know you can. And you clearly didn't watch my video the other day about the floorboards and that comment I specifically said I'm man enough to admit that to say you're probably a better Rider than I am.
hard to do when people rant for paragraphs at a time...
just go practice more....get off youtube.
Attention paid!
I know all this, but still struggling with my new Pan America compared to my smaller bikes. More practice i guess 🫠
