A friend from my recording arts program actually met Pollard once, who was characteristically drunk out of his mind and bitching about how Guided by Voices should be in the Rock Hall

Bad music is crowding my plate I walk from my bed of hate no signs pointing me to the fun Big lies that the music's the same taunt me that I'm somehow to blame you've got to lower expectations in the rain but I'm riding a lame horse that's maimed Every day I watch No longer turn it up a notch So I slump in my chair in despair back to my bed no smile I wear Turned the radio up it's never enough It just leaves me cold and undun But Guided by Voices was on I just listen again and again and this time it's not just pretend 'Cause I'm gonna play it again to the end Guided by Voices that's the story of my life That's the end of the story of strife
I've been listening to GBV for nearly twenty years and never heard this song until now. Such an early lo-fi gem from maybe the greatest band to ever live.
Do you guys understand how fucking sad this song is? Omg makes me wanna cry. A lot od his early stuff beforw they broke were sad (think "Drinker's Peace, for ex ) It very much sounds the work of a desperate man in a dead end world, which is exactly what he was, toiling away as a schoolteacher, going way in debt to make records that everyone hated
Damn well put young man! I agree 100%.The feeling of desperation and impending doom is very palpable in some of the early stuff."Same Place the Fly Got Smashed" for example.

I just love stumbling upon the obscuities from the suitcases cuz honestly I don't listen to them often enough. I have difficulty prying the "proper albums" from whence they are glued to the changer.
GBV isn't my fave band but, I'm thinkin' this is the greatest song ever written, recorded, etc. I feel like I'm inside myself when I hear this song. I do not like it. But, I also don't wanna leave there.
Well, that's the thing with GBV, when you listen to their best songs (which number in the 100's) you are convinced that, right here, right now, THIS is the best song in the world.
I remember when GbV signed to a major producer. GbV had it Down already with sound! I think they sounded to produced; a little over the top, missing the mark of their original sound. That was already laid down. I still like it though.
Just epic. Just frigging epic. Sure, I'm not from the Midwest. Sure, I'm not from the East coast. I'm a Cali guy, so what do I know about Real freezing Cold. BUT DAMNIT: it still resonates for a single guy wondering wtf do you have to do to find a 40something SWF who isn't attached, when you come home alone, especially when it gets to the winter months? Its all there. I just wish Bob could go back to these days when he puts out albums...or has he?
Around when I discovered this song, I was walking door to door that winter canvassing for someone running for political office in Ohio, and listening to this makes me fondly nostalgic
Yeah. The little thing about it is they pioneered Lo- Fi/ mono tone four track recordings as a finished. The the record companies said, “ Oh, it’s just can’t be done that way.” Music needs to be over produced? I think 2:42 they sounds pretty signature For sound. Oh yeah, and some other people got wind of this idea. And, they went all over the place with it. I always remember a quote from Sir Isaak Newton, “ We stand on the shoulders of giants.” 🧑🎨♾️👨🎓
This song sounds so much better when you live in Winnipeg.
Try Newfoundland.
No, I've been there. It ain't got shit on Winnipeg....
@@Elaine-oo4qpyeah Newfoundland is maritime cold. Winnipeg is that interior Siberia cold 🥶
Been a long time fan and just discovered this beautiful song ... This band never stops amazing
These guys have influenced so many and deserve the Rock n Roll hall of fame
shhhhhhhhhhh. rock stars follow pollard for influence, will be ruined if in rrhof
A friend from my recording arts program actually met Pollard once, who was characteristically drunk out of his mind and bitching about how Guided by Voices should be in the Rock Hall
The "rock n roll hall of fame" doesn't deserve them.
@@alanlake4614my favorite GBV song is wished I was a giant
Good idea. I agree.
I go outside and it's cold
I walk downtown and it's cold
I do everything that I'm told
The people I meet, so hooked on defeat
And if it's not one thing, then it's ten
I shouldn't have to be told
So I just keep moving around
'Cause I'm cold
I picked up the pieces that break
And try not to make a mistake
And sometimes I'm sick when I wake
I jump in my car and go to a bar
Because it's so much warmer in there
For my decrepit soul
Then I get back to moving around
'Cause I'm cold
All wound up
All broken down
Animal person
Carnival clown
The only thing that hurts
Is knowing it gets worse
As it goes
I work every day till I'm tired
Emotionally uninspired
And some think I'll maybe get fired
But what else is new
You do what you do
Because you're told to
It's something of which I'm really not yet quite sold
But it must just be a problem with me
'Cause I'm cold
Growing up in Southern California I always romanticized these winter images of the Midwest. Don’t think I could live in it, though.
Give climate change a few more years and maybe you can after all 😕
@@dstarr8222nah moving to the beehive state in a month. We’ll see how I do.
One of the greatest songs ever. Beautiful melancholy.
Bad music is crowding my plate
I walk from my bed of hate
no signs pointing me to the fun
Big lies that the music's the same
taunt me that I'm somehow to blame
you've got to lower expectations in the rain
but I'm riding a lame horse
that's maimed
Every day I watch
No longer turn it up a notch
So I slump in my chair in despair
back to my bed no smile I wear
Turned the radio up
it's never enough
It just leaves me cold and undun
But Guided by Voices was on
I just listen again and again
and this time it's not just pretend
'Cause I'm gonna play it again to the end
Guided by Voices that's the story of my life
That's the end of the story of strife
This is probably the best Pollars song of all time, which means that this is probably THE best song of all time
It's the national anthem. Even if it's not it is.
So true...so true.
Eh...my personal fave is the enemy
It's ok. I think they have much better but this is nice. It has a good sound
My God, still can't believe this was the sound they had back in 1987.
Bob is such an amazing songwriter that a tune this good went unreleased. Nuts.
the greatest songwriter that ever lived as far as im concerned
This song is a masterpiece

Really hits the spot today. Gotta love Pollard / GBV
Man alive, this winter is lasting forever, and it's cold...
What a song, another one just rattled off and consigned! Kudos on the video, makes it even better, hugely so

Don’t have to live in Winnipeg. Just have a name called David Pollard and I can relate,,cracking song.
Why my grandparents left western Pennsylvania in the 50s for the endless sunshine of Southern California.

Awesome song and great job with the video man! Reminds me of my old home town of Lemont, Il

This is such an endearing little gem. Really wonder why it didn't make it onto any of their main albums...

Dan Brenner I'm sure you know this, but some parts of California are super cold in winter. Try going to the Sierra Nevadas in January
