It's very unusual for Star Trek to just have two fathers casually trading notes about their teenage sons - nothing alien about it. It's also incredibly classic Trek (and especially DS9) for one of those sons to be an alien doing things nobody from his society has ever done, because he's growing and learning and is his way of doing what he thinks is right. Perfect combination for a lovely scene.

@@jerodast It occurred to me a while ago that the Quark, Rom and Nog basically have an immigrant story plotline. One adult becomes traditionalist (maybe even more so than he would have in the homeland), the other adult is open-minded and assimilates a little, but the next generation goes all in on assimilation. (No puns intended.) And as everyone is saying, it's all very human for rubber forehead aliens.

Very, very rare. I feel like it was a tremendous missed opportunity from the DS9 writing staff. That being said, Rom wasn't main cast, and the majority of scenes need to involve the main cast interacting, I suppose. But yeah, this was a great scene.

I like how different Sisko's interactions with Rom are from Quark. Sisko usually takes on a hard-edged and suspicious tone of voice with Quark, mainly because he doesn't really trust him and the fact that he's usually up to something. With Rom, his voice is softer and more friendly due to Rom's sensitive nature and lack of guile. Although Quark and Rom are brothers, they couldn't be more different. 🖖😎👍

That's why it's good to have multiple characters when you're trying to represent a group. Dwayne McDuffie demonstrated that with his comics - one character of a minority represents all of them but when you have many they can show many sides.
So with DS9 we get to see a very average Ferengi businessman in Quark but we also get to see his head of state, his unusual mother, even more cutthroat businessmen, his bad at being a Ferengi brother, and his genius nephew.

DS9 did a great job showing the various types of "good" fathers
Both Rom and Sisko are single dads, dedicated to their careers, but always there to make time for their children, and be a good role model
Worf, the awkward "Never wanted to be a dad" who struggles to understand his son who is nothing like him, and though he didn't always make the best decisions as a father, he always tried to do what was best for his son
O'Brien, the classic overworked family man who loves his wife and kids more than anything, while battling his own internal demons, including PTSD.
An argument could even be made for Martok in the later seasons, as Worf's adopted older brother/father figure. He gave the portrayal of the elder father to an adult son, who had cultivated a true friendship with his child, and could view Worf as an equal, while still being able to offer guidance, and accept council.
And lastly, there's Joseph Sisko. As Ben's dad, and Jake's grandfather, we always saw him as a stern, but fair man who took a no BS approach to his son, while gently offering guidance and discipline. And, he taught Ben to cook with all the talents of a Michelin Star chef. That in itself is a noteworthy task
From the first episode, the driving principal in DS9 was family.

  • @happygimly6061

Part of the reason Sisko is my favorite captain is just because of how human he is. You get the feeling Picard was born in a starfleet uniform and Kirk loved his silver lady more than he could any woman. Great characterizations if you're trying to portray legendary captains sure but they were both larger than life. Sisko on the other hand was more than just his job. He invited his coworkers to dinners so he could cook for them, he took them out to baseball games in the holosuite to show them his favorite hobby, he had heart to hearts with his son, he traded parenting advice with O'brien and Rom here, he acted like a kook to court his wife. You always got a sense of how he was juggling his different identities, commander, father, friend, husband just like how real people do. That always made him feel much richer as a character, like he was much more than a uniform, some pips and a combadge.

I was riding in an elevator with the company CEO one day and it kind of hit me that is likely a very lonely existence once you reach that level as anyone acting nice to you has to be suspected of an ulterior motive and even childhood friends (Unless they are similarly wealthy and powerful probably fall by the wayside as you rise up as they can't afford to hang out with you or you get too busy with social events they can't attend, but you must attend because of your station in life (Political fundraisers, charity benefits, golf tourneys, etc.). At the same time, one's sympathy is limited by the fact that person is perhaps making 20 or more times per year than you are, and likely knowingly cast some people off as they rose through the ranks.

Rom is such a good character in the show. And it's crazy to think that he exists as a character purely as a writing consequence of other characters.
Quark and Nog were both planned characters from the beginning of the series. Quark was always a bartender on the station and Nog was always going to be Quark's nephew that lived on the station and eventually joined Starfleet.
Nog though, he started off as a no-name throw away Ferengi waiter in the bar. But then they decided Nog needed a father and if Nog has a father that means he's Quark's brother. They had Nog on the series already so they just used him. Then they sculpted his personality to contrast with Quark's.
He's shockingly very similar to Miles O'brien from a writing perspective. An actor playing a bit part with not much going on that the staff liked that got their character shaped to fit the events the story needed as time went on.

If you don't mind me asking, what DVD copier program did you use to copy you star treks from DVD to digital?

    • @April-dv2pb
      @April-dv2pb  Рік тому +6

I used DVD Decrypted and put the episodes on my hard drive. Then I use Nero to edit the clips. Other times I used VLC media player to record Star Trek DVDs.

I like how no one in their or our universe says anything about taking blood from an unconscious child. Interesting how that's "ok" because it's a parent doing the blood taking.

What a great scene. Rom and Sisko pretty much have the same issue, sons they are clashing with, but at opposite ends of the spectrum. And Rom constantly checking that vile as if he's convinced it's going to change at any moment makes me laugh.

that is the writers still trying to keep some of the Ferengis' original purpose to the show, comical relief. It was good that they drifted away from that more as the show progressed.

@@varianschirmer9375 I think I meant to put Rom. I don’t know why I said Aron.
Mainly because I said “Sisko” as in the character. It wouldn’t make sense for the character to find an actor (the wrong actor too) funny.
