      its debatable but yes his line of play was valid.

    • @petzkuh
      @petzkuh 5 років тому +10

      It's the right play. His list has two Kaya, and the second one was already binned by Azcanta. It's repeatable lifegain, so if he manages to fade a burn spell for just one turn, he can stabilize and win the game. Taking Absorb would have meant he's not dead to the next two burn spells, but he'd need to find another one in the next 2-3 turns to stay in the game (and then again after that, etc). EDIT: actually, Kaya only loses to *two* burn spells or creature plus burn spell, since you don't know what the one card he kept was. It's unlikely to be a 3 damage burn spell (which kaya also loses to) since opponent would likely have cast it in response to the Azcanta activation.

    • @GSol17
      @GSol17 5 років тому +2

      @@petzkuh on the other hand you could argue that you've seen mono red whiff on drawing burn several turns in a row and Is due to draw some any turn now. With that information in mind I would've gone absorb for safety.

    • @danielluc4433
      @danielluc4433 5 років тому +3

      @@GSol17 Absorb wasn't the safe choice at all. The only way to survive in this scenario is to take absorb, let the lavarunner resolve, dont play cravings on its attack and let him hit you to 1 life. If you play cravings or counter with absorb he will kill you in response. If you take the absorb and at any time he gets 2 burn spells you cannot win either. He just plays 1 at your face and when you absorb kill you in response.
      Kaya was definitely the right play.

    • @sepherous7418
      @sepherous7418 5 років тому +1

      Pretty sure absorb was better specifically becuae he had moment of craving in his hand and sunkenruin, if he was judt top decking instead of gaining advantage every turn he lived then sure kaya is better, but absorb garuntees survival to more than kaya does, having 2 direct damage sources as red deck is not hard to beleive at all, especially since he could have been holding back anything waiting for a counter or for you to tap out. He also showed he was willing to play his lands instead of bluff which led you to beleive he had shit that wasnt useless.

    • @HitanBot
      @HitanBot 5 років тому +3

      Honestly kaya felt like the better pick there even from a viewer standpoint cos with that pick all he had to to was fade a 3 dmg burn and he's in the clear wheras with the absorb pick he has to first let a lavarunner hit him in the face to survive one more turn and even then if he does that piotr can just wait for more burn and savijz is in the same place he was before kaya.Doesn't feel like tension got him at all just a good topdeck.

    • @lokiness13
      @lokiness13 5 років тому +3

      @@HitanBot imo the best play is to pick Absorb since he is so low HP and Kaya needs at least 3 turns to be more impactful than Absorb.
      Worst case scenario for Absorb : counter a Firebrand for +4 HP, counter a Shock +5 HP
      Worst case scenario for Kaya : use the +1 once, heal for 2 HP and die to any 2 + 3 damage combination, after 2 turns Kaya only healed you by 4 HP
      I love Savjz and this is a very difficult decision to make but Absorb was so good in this situation, on 3 HP with only 1 card for the opponent, I really hoped that he picks it, and the Kaya pick and what followed hurt me a little.

    • @codybord2294
      @codybord2294 5 років тому +4

      Picking Absorb was definitely the better call with Kaya's Wrath in hand, yes he would've gone down two, but he also would've faded out a burn.

    • @MyHydralisk
      @MyHydralisk 5 років тому +1

      @@HitanBot He don't know the card in Piotr hand. It could be already 3 damage burn. Playing Kaya could have been deadly on the spot. And, like @lokiness13 said, Absorb is minimum +4HP, maximum you counter freaking Frenzy. Kaya is only +2HP now, +2HP next turn if he lives - which he's not. Against monored you should never go for value play, you just staying alive. Also, on a side note - emotions on Savjz face tell the story there :) PS: it was not a good topdeck for monored, it was pretty normal topdeck since he drew SO much in that game and couldn't find finisher for several turns in a row

    • @HitanBot
      @HitanBot 5 років тому +1

      @@MyHydralisk kaya was also the only stabalisation tool in the deck as his other kaya was in the grave, and it was highly unlikely he would get to it before he died. If you look at the overall situation he has to hit the second absorb after letting lavarunner dome him and countering the 3 dmg burn so he goes to 4 and then goes to 6 from moment of craving the next turn, the problem is that he is then in a situation where he doesn't really have a way to win, kaya is at the bottom of his deck and his opponent is more likely to draw lethal dmg or frenzy with every passing turn. Kaya gave him a chance to decicivly win the game in the next couple of turns if he fades the 3 dmg burn which more than likely piotr doesn't have in his hand judging by how he has played the game so far and besides that savijz has another absorb in his deck which if he gets in a position to protect kaya with he almost certainly wins. i do think it was very close as the kaya line was certainly more risky but with a larger payoff wheras the absorb line saves him from the topdeck but doesn't put him as far ahead saying it was an outright misplay even in hindsight just feels wrong especially since going by your logic for all savijz knows the card in his hand might be a land to try and bait him into playing around extra burn :) PS: the land draw was actually more likely for the monored player than a 3 dmg burn of any sort so it was a pretty good topdeck

      Yeah... He was going for long game with Kaya right after, instead of Absorb to guarantee survival.... In hindsight I still think he made the right call there tbh. Or... He made the sensible call vs. the total gamble for 1 more turn to topdeck more stabilizers. I can absolutely see why he went for Kaya over Absorb, eventhough it cost him the game the turn after.

    Magic is such a great game of bluffs, reads, and counterbluffs. A friend of mine once put it this way: 'I know what the SMART play is, everyone does, so it's obvious what I SHOULD be doing, but I know that he knows that and is likely holding onto a counter to the most optimal play, but knowing that his counter will also counter my next best play I'm going to do the dumb thing and it will win me the game.'

    I don't think this format can produce anything nearly "best of all time", no offense. MTG has a huge competitive matches' history, it takes A LOT to be up there. Topdecking Kaya's into Vraska's and then keeping a Syncopate on top to lock yourself out of Azcanta is also pretty questionable.

      If you had watched the video you'd see how much the aggro player had to think, way more than savjz did.
      Holding back attacks because you could sac the firebrand in response to moment of craving is way more thinking ahead than just draw go control. Not saying savjz wasn't thinking, if he hadn't shocked himself in game 2 he might've stabilized, same goes for him oocking the planeswalker over absorb. He wanted to put a threat on the board when in reality staying alive was his way of winning

    • @literalgod4347
      @literalgod4347 5 років тому +4

      @@coycen Nope, taking the Kaya was ultimately the only way Savijz could stabilize long term...if he had taken the absorb, sure, he would have survived one more turn but what then? No Kaya left in deck means there is no good way remaining to gain life and he would have died a turn or two later. Kaya was the best choice from a neutral standpoint and it was sad that he died to a top deck. Also, the other player knew that Savjz had a moment of craving in hand as that caster said. Holding onto cards until he had uncontested lethal was the logical play, doesn't take a World Champion to know that (any brainless mono red player would know).
      Game 2 was unfortunate due to the shock lands. Ultimately, there was so much early burn in hand for the mono red player (3 shocks + 1 later wtf) that Savjz could never have stopped the burn.
      Savjz played beautifully in game 1, going around that negate in hand and not being greedy with benalia early. Also, in game 3, the choice not to activate ascanta and to put the first Kaya in the graveyard for the Vraska's Contempt was godlike. Huge congratulations to Savjz who isn't even a pro MTG player. I state again that losing to a mono red player with a mono blue second deck is something he shouldn't be ashamed of as we have all been there. As a main Esper control player, I know the pain. Sultai midrange would have rekt though!

      @@literalgod4347 First passage of this comment is absolute bs. When you have a flipped Azcanta and a regular one on board, you can stall as long as you want. He still had some counters and life gain cards left in his deck that could have brought him to Kaya again. I agree that Kaya was his win condition, however, he went for it too early. Probably the stress from performing on stage.

    The end was such a feelsbadman because if he went with absorb rather than kaya he would have in a way gained 6 health and been far out of lethal range giving enough time for maybe a teferi or some other win condition. Or maybe Kaya was the right play had he not drawn the 3 mana burn spell since it would have been consistent life gain. Either way, this man is top class and I'm exited to see him compete more

    • @brianh5844
      @brianh5844 5 років тому +1

      I know I'm late to the party here but I do think Savj's line was probably correct. He doesn't know Piotr is holding 2 damage for one, and if he takes the "safe" line with taking absorb, there are still ways he loses (if opponent has two 3 damage burn spells, for instance, and casts the 2nd in response to absorb). Whereas if he takes the Kaya line, he's pretty much guaranteed to win as he'll have a recurrent source of life gain if he survives one draw step. So while taking absorb gives you a much higher chance of surviving the next draw step, taking Kaya might give you a higher chance of eventually winning the game.
      That said, it is pretty darn close and I wouldn't be surprised if someone did the math and absorb did turn out to be correct. Just keep in mind the math is much more complicated than "one heals for 6, one heals for 2" since Kaya potentially heals for more than 6, and it heals immediately so it isn't vulnerable to the opponent saving up multiple burn spells to win in response to absorb.

    They should just embrace the random and use the draft format for these tournaments.
    Much more fun and takes deckbuilding skills into account.

    No real control player would've played that Chemister's Insight that way.

    I stopped playing magic because of mono red aggro/burn. Maybe it isn't always meta, but every time I start playing again it seems like the most common decks I go up against.
    It's just not fun, it's effective, but the slow control player in me just feels bad about it.
    Edit: Honestly I feel like for these reasons tournaments should be win/switch. That way you can't just win with mono red 2 and out on a lucky draw.

      Funny how the commentators try so hard to make it seem like the monored player is making all these difficult choices. The guy definitely played well, but "point burn at face, play around counters" isn't exactly rocket science.

      Honestly, beating a mono red deck isn't tough. But in a tournament format, you can't make 3 decks to deal with it, so it's almost always gonna get 1 of your decks unless you draw great or they draw terribly.
      You notice he didn't start with mono red because if you start with mono red there's a chance you run into a deck that can handle it right from the start.

    Super happy to see a deck that you can pilot with three brain cells destroy everything in this meta. Really fun watching a red player sit there and take 8 days to figure out what they want to do with a hand of one.
    I hope WotS has some good answers to RDW

      Honestly the way that Glowgowski played RDW was honestly mind blowing. Any casual Ranked RDW would just always go face and cast their entire hand but he thought more about the Esper deck than I think Savjz did, held back a lot of cards, keeping the firebrand untapped and not just smacking face. Yes RDW can be piloted with 3 brain cells but this was on another level.

    Monored burn spells is a very uninteresting deck to watch and play. Shame you lost to that.

      What? The burn games where so much more interesting than the first game was by far...
      I don't get the mono red hate. I'm a control player myself but I'd rather play aggro decks than control mirrors

    NO Skill in RDW, I do not care about what people have to say. RDW is the easy way out. No real thinking involved. "Do i cast this burn, or that burn, or this burn?" YAWWWN
