The real life Ochiba inspired Martin in writing Cersei Lannister. This show is SO amazing and has deserved all the awards. I have loved your watch along.
There's a lovely end to the whole garderner story in the novel, where obviously it's explained in more detail. The garderner had been troubled by great pains as of late, and he could no longer perform his tasks to his own standard. With Blackthorne's order that no one touch the bird under (jestingly) penalty of death - and in the novel, asking Blackthorne for permission to remove the bird isn't even considered - the garderner, Ueki is his name in the novel, volunteers knowing full well it means his death. As we're shown in an earlier episode, when Blackthorne tries to add -san to his name, he protests that it isn't proper, the suffix -san only being used when speaking to equals. Ueki is considered, and considers himself, to be of distinctly lower class than any Samurai, and the appointed hatamoto Blackthorne. But, he is given the great honor of being executed by one of Toranaga's Samurai, an honor reserved only for other Samurai, and he accepted this death gladly. Blackthorne, after learning all this, and still heartbroken sitting in his garden, realizing his error and grieving for the old garderner, picks up a rock and names it Ueki and places it among the broken pebbles and says: - Please stay in my garden, Ueki-san. 💔💔💔
@@arlenemaurillo1931 You are most welcome. :) I really recommend the novel, and also the 1980s miniseries Shogun starring Richard Chamberlain. I'm not sure if it's better than the remake, but it is different, and if anything the two different versions complement eachother. Some scenes that are in the 1980s version (and the novel) are very different, or or just completely omitted, in the new one, but then again the same is true the other way around. Fortunately we don't have to choose one or the other, we got both.

This was originally supposed to be a 10 episode miniseries in fact I think this season completely adapted the book it's based but because it was so popular and so widely loved by everyone it's getting at least two more seasons can't wait to see where they go from here and I love this part of Japanese history
I agree that he intended to sow discord between the two, but I didn't think he wanted Omi for himself. Why would he want someone who showed that he couldn't be trusted?
This is when John is broken thus the ep title. John's perspective shifted after that Earthquake and he's also becoming bonded to people like Mariko, Fuji and Toranaga's samurai spy
The elegance of the script writing, acting, sentiment within the deeds and motives of the characters, all of which underpinned by a beautiful yet haunting musical score, has meant this show eclipses many many others in my view. The poignancy levels have only just started to creep up and I can already see eyes getting shiny. Hold on to your seats guys..
Hunters often age game birds like pheasant for up to a week before eating as it makes the meat more tender and helps reduce the gamey taste as long as the temperature isn’t over 45-50 F they can be left in a shaded place outdoors. It does impart a slightly funky taste similar to dry aging beef but lots of people like that.
@@kennethwilliams7731 You might think so but experience proves otherwise, any contamination in that time would be on the outside and get plucked/skinned off… just like dry aged beef once you cut off the outer layer it’s perfectly fine. You can’t do it outside if the temperature is too high of course because then the bacteria would grow and spread much faster.
@dekulruno which is actually what happened with THIS pheasant in the story. Blackthorne wasnt aware how the much different weather would affect the process, and the bird rotted through and through.
31:15 the gardener willing chose to sacrifice himself just to spare the village of the stench from the bird, as he was an old man with nothing left to live for
This is by far my favorite episode of the series. The emotional interaction between John and Fuji always gets me. He seems to be begging her forgiveness for their gardener and him comforting her when she was injured in the earthquake.
The fact that a 10-15 minute dialogue sequence managed to hook me every single second shows how great the writing, direction and acting are in this show. That's how awesome it is!
19:47 When Japanese people eat noodles, they take in air to enjoy the aroma. Japanese people do not find this sound unpleasant. It is the same as when a sommelier tastes wine.
If it's a happy marriage it would be messed up to just hook up with another man/woman within, what, days after they die. But Mariko was obviously miserable in the marriage and despised Buntaro, so when he "died" she quite understandably felt free to do whatever srhe wanted.
Marikos story is heartbreaking! Even since her father was executed she’s wanted to commit seppuku, yet she’s had to endure Buntaro who denies her that release That’s why she didn’t flinch when he shot arrows past her, yes he’s amazing but also she doesn’t care if she dies
i remember the controversy when you guys watched squid game with the dub because steven doesnt like subtitles, but it seems like hes not missing a single beat with this show 😀
In 1586, a major earthquake caused a mountain body to collapse in the Hida region, engulfing the lord's family and more than 300 buildings with earth and floodwaters, killing almost everyone. The only survivors were some residents who were out that day and the lord's two younger brothers who were training to be Buddhist monks at the temple.
Hey Nicki and Steve. I think you two may have something wrong for a few episodes. The original courtesan who slept with John was not Maricko Sama. She was not being coy when she asked how his night was the day after. It literally was not her. It wasn't the woman assigned to him either. It was a gift from the woman he was assigned to.
I'm so glad that even though you were hesitant going into this show because of the subtitles you are enjoying it so much. It really goes to show that it really comes down to how good the story is. A good enough story/performance/production will bypass something that may make you biased against a certain property. If you think you may want to try other movies/shows with subtitles after this I highly recommend Pan's Labyrinth from Guillermo del Toro. Another just incredible story by one of the greatest fantasy/creature design directors out there
I think this was my favorite episode of the season. The side plot of the rotting bird and the consequences of bad translation, the one upsmanship and unspoken words of the dinner scene, and finally the horror and chaos of that shocking landslide from the Earthquake.
Umm, slurping noodles, especially soba and ramen, is perfectly normal and acceptable in Japan, but making unpleasant noises when eating other foods is considered indecent and frowned upon (just like in your country ...).
We Japanese basically do not make any noise except for slurping noodles. Slurping noodles has nothing to do with "gratitude. Before eating, we say "Itadakimasu" (thank you) to the ingredients that have become our food, and after eating, we say "Gochiso-sama" (thank you) to the people who procured the ingredients and cooked the food.
Probably already been mentioned but this is based on a novel, however some of the people are indeed real. Such as the main character, although he had a different name in real life.
It’s not just his words but also his position of authority that gave meaning to his words. He’s no longer a prisoner he has a position and a title. It’s not really the culture it’s more like respect for the authority because otherwise titles and positions won’t matter.

I'd say, further on into the book series. Yes, I believe there's a series of books.
Toranaga gave Omi the regiment to sow discord between him and his uncle. He wants the talented boy for himself, and doesn't want split loyalties.
