Remember, there’s never just ONE rat!
Roger 🇦🇺
You talk about the government? 😂
Put discs on your all your ropes to stop them climbing them
Absolutely this!!!
There only really effective when the boats afloat all the time, this one dries out every tide.
Rats climb well but Sarinda’s wet curved bilge should keep them away. The ropes definitely need metal discs. A trap on the rope could be good. I’ve no clue how you’d fix it in place.
The stern area with the large exhaust box's is an idea area for rats to climb aboard they could use the stern ropes that sag during low tides. Also, ant tree branched etc. would act as a bridge. Yes, discs do deter them but are usually fitted near the top of the mooring line. I had a lot of problems with floating trees on the Medway and had to inspect under the hull to prevent my wooden hull getting damaged.@@davidelliott5843
Blimey - these politicians get everywhere !
Lol...😂👍
Yes, these creeps worm their way into everything, and they are hard to get rid of.
Canada has rats too! Forget the fancy stuff. The basic spring loaded wood base rat trap w peanut butter is 100% effective.
my personal favorite .. cheese whiz and PB .... they come miles for it ..
When I lived in Alberta, we were being told there were no rats in the province. Probably only in Government..😂
@martynbuzzing3327
I doubt is true now, as the wealth of transport trucks and rail waggons from the BC coast, rats the size of cats .. and I, 've seen the grain cars in N. Vancouver with dozens of them in the cars themselves.
@@doonhamer252 To be honest, I wasn't convinced, but my ex-wife assured me this was the case. I just mentioned that the rats obviously don't cross borders..lol
Well, if the peanut butter has not worked try some toothpaste (I'm serious) or some large shavings of Irish Spring bar soap. ( again I am serious and brand specific too).
When I was in Scouts we had rats and mice in a cabin that ate this right out of our packs...
Snap Traps will work wonders , place them along side of the deck and bulkheads....
Good Hunting from the YVR area.!!!
Rats are very wary, if you keep disturbing things they will never be caught. You must set the traps and leave everything alone, so they get used to where things are, and not have your fresh scent on anything, until they are in the traps.
Hi, Gemma. I'm a retired Ratcatcher, and I' afraid I've got some bad news for you. Your unwelcome guest isn't "he", it's "she", and at this time of year, she will be looking for somewhere to make a nest. I'm off the road at the moment, but once my truck is fixed, I could come and give you a hand to get rid of her. In the mean time, if you can remove any potential bedding material and keep food in a rat proof container, this will discourage her. If you are using traps, always wear gloves to avoid leaving your scent on them, and leave them untouched for at least a week before moving or re-baiting them. Incidentally, it is a criminal offence to release a brown rat (Rattus norvegicus) into the wild, so if you catch one, you will have to find a humane way to despatch it. Don't use glue boards, because, by law, they must be checked at least every 12 hours, and any catch humanely destroyed. I hope this is helpful, and if you need a hand, let me know.
And a rat has a very good sense of smell. Don't use your hands without a clean glove!
Poor Rishi Sunak gets evicted 🤣🤣🤣
Don't use poison in a boat. They die slowly and hide somewhere. Your boat will smell horrible!
yep , life lesson i learned ..
Yup
Most rat poisons kill by dehydrating the victim thereby mostly eliminating any smell.
Bonjour ne jamais toucher les pieges avec les mains les rats ne sont pas idiots from France cordialement
The popsong taken care they dry and become a mummy
There is more than one. I promise
1:03 The trouble with "go off and die somewhere" is... they usually pick places you don't have easy access to. ...and on a boat where things tend to get wet, the smell never goes away. Or you make a horrible soup in the bilge. I'd pass on the poison.
wear gloves when setting traps they can smell you and avoid it till your sent goes away
Make sure he subscribes to the channel!
Hit the like button
You need a ship’s cat!
When you handle the traps they can smell you and won’t go near them. Bury the traps in your garden for a week then use gloves to move them. They won’t smell you and enter the traps. Good luck
I've tried using peanut butter, cheese, peanuts and M&Ms as rat bait. By far, the peanuts worked the best for me. As for traps, the old wooden-base spring-loaded traps caught more rats than anything. I hot glue the peanut to the trap's trigger and it works every time. Good luck!
I agree. I think that the fact that there is no tunnel or obstruction surrounding them empowers the rats to take a chance on taking a bite of the nuts. I've always had the best luck using cheese.
He looked too big for those green traps.
Steel wool/mesh to block holes where cables pass through reduce the traffic lanes inside the boat (or in my case the commercial kitchens I worked in for 32 years.
Yes, this is a well known dodge. You need to realize that what looks like a plump rat (as seen in the nighttime video) can squeeze through an amazingly small hole, so you have to stuff the steel wool well into the gaps where they are moving around. They won't chew steel wool so they can't reopen the hole if you've done a thorough job. But reducing their mobility won't get rid of them. I agree with the people who've endorsed the old fashioned spring traps with peanut butter as the bait. Rats are smart (for a rodent). They'll, er, smell a rat if you lay the trap clumsily. They like to wander around at night and hide during the day.
You need to put discs on your mooring lines so they can’t climb them . 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
In the Navy we called them RAT Guards. They were always top on the list when tying up to the pier, As for the live trap....you tie a rope to it and hang it overboard at low tide. Check
it at the next low tide.
Time to install old fashioned rat guards and you need to keep traps aboard all the time.
When u stared saying that u have intruders on your boat. I thought u had caught the real trader again from the past. So glad u didn't.
I live in Australia in a place where there are many grain piles throughout the year. Traps are ok but if you spray peppermint liberally throughout the building or boat, rodents will bugger off . The come in sniff then leave. I doesn’t take long before they don’t even bother and stay away. I spray lightly every couple of weeks and no longer have a problem. Forgot to say, six or so drops of peppermint oil to 100 drops of tap water.
Probably stop them on the moorings if you spray them regularly.
Pepper works too, we had a rat in our shed and sprinkled pepper everywhere
I say, if and when you catch him, you take them out and float test them.
beside intelligent, they are excellent swimmers too!
@@johumm455 Not if they are still in the steel cage trap - they dont dive well for long
After you catch it toss the trap overboard. When it stops swimming dump it out into the estuary. The circle of life will reprocess it. There's more than one by the way. If you see one there's plenty more that you didn't see.
I hope you keep traps set, even after you think they're all gone. Good luck!
we live in the country, always having to catch them when they get in the sheds, favourite things to catch them seems to be the cheap choccy wafer biscuits or corn on the cob :) but yeah as someone's already said, don't use poison they will only wind up dying somewhere you cant get to them and stink the boat out.
yep had that myself, i wrote else where, put bait down outside, and the rat died under my floor, smelt for a few days, but then i had a plague of flies, coming up into the wall cavity and under the skirting board which i blocked, me and Mr Dyson got to work catching them at the window, several times a day, 15 or more a time, total over several days over 430, not sure which is worse, hundreds of flies or one rat that didn't smell to begin - they say your never far from a rat
i used to have a friendly field mouse come in the window next to me and pinch dry dog food, now i didn't mind that
I thought I saw beady little eyes behind the panel as well as the one walking around the mattress. Don’t assume there is only one.
Your progress is staggering. Your videos are so entertaining. Thank you for doing what you do. This week wasn't bash, bash, bash, more Splash, splash, splash. You guys are amazing.
Hi both you can get sticky rat traps. If you have no joy with your traps. Only down side is you will have to dispatch it. Make sure you wash your hands because they pee everywhere and carry germs.
I have gotten rid of MANY rats and mice with sticky traps. I hate them but they have worked when nothing else would.
I lived in a seaside town. Snap traps are the thing! It was a regular maintenance job. We call them Snickers candy bars, but i think they are called Mars bars in GB were our best bait. The candy bars that are chocolate, nougat, caramel, and peanut! Good luck!
Thanks, loving what you're doing,
Grandad was sas during the war.
Legend to his family and what he did for us. Helped raise me and many others.

Rats suffer from Neophobia. The fear of new things, it may take a few days before they go near traps.
BTW, they scent trails with their urine along the walls to navigate.
You're a brave girl Gemma 👍⚓
They do tend to follow the same paths as they travel (using pee as a scent trail). So if you can figure the path out you can place traps along the way. I’d go with traditional snap traps.
There is no such thing as ONE Rat or one mouse! Both love to chew electric wires/insulation. I'd go with commercial baits..
You never have one rat, soon mummy and daddy will have lots of babies
Peanut butter is a good bait but more importantly always use gloves when handling the traps and bait so that your scent isn't all over them!
I would have left the bedding etc. in situ. I was told to leave things alone as disturbances may put them off the area. Just set the traps and wait.
If there is one rat you can add 10 you haven’t seen yet🐀🐀😮
Amen to that
Little guy needs a name! I was in stitches watching this, great video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Roland!
@@olivethrush7450 YEEEAAAHH!!!
@@olivethrush7450 of course! What else!
Rishy
He's behind you🤣🤣🤣
Recommend dust masks when doing the clean up. The green trap looks like a mouse trap. The cctv showed the rat to be larger than the green trap.
Such a good husband, I couldn't have helped myself to not jumpscare her 😂
FUNNY
Mice/rats will usually board a boat via its dock lines or anywhere else where the mouse/rat can reach the line. And in your case, you have lines lying on the muddy ground at low tide.
/
They do sell discs to put on your lines to keep mice/rats from scurrying up your lines and boarding the boat. The great part is, that once you know what they look like you can easily make them.
/
Those discs will stop the mice/rats from entering the boat, and the peanut butter will easily catch them once on the boat. I have caught scores of them using peanut butter.
Good luck.
I got 3 minutes in and was dying laughing, imagine it came out, in that small room, Jemma you would die😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
So would Simon, I suppose. Gemma would trample him to death, trying to escape that room. 😁
Hi Gemma, I like the traditional style of trap and I actually don't set the trap and feed them on the trap trigger for about 3 or 4 days and then start setting them, pretty effective method
Humane traps are better. Don't kill them, as they will go away and die and smell for ages. Also if they die on deck a bird could eat it and die.
I recommend a crosman ratbuster...or a JRT
leave entrance then when caught i would suggest a watery finish
There's never only one rat (or mouse) !
For every RAT you see… there’s 6 other’s you don’t! Bait the snap traps with Jelly. Peanut butter seems to mold quicker ocean environments.
I’ve had to deal with rats and mice as a professional. Rats are very skidish after their habitat is disturbed. It may take a couple of weeks for it to settle back down. I relied on spring traps or glue boards baited with chocolate or cheese flavor baked crackers. Peanut butter is to oily and will harden quickly. Place 2 spring traps on the top bunk and 2 on the bottom bunk with the trigger end placed on the hull bulkhead and the spring end toward the of the mattress. Cone your mooring lines. Good luck. Love your channel.
I wish I'd seen this at the time, I used to work in pest control many many years ago, when handling and baiting traps you increase your chances ten fold if you avoid putting your scent on a bait and/or the trap.
make sure that there no other accessible food sources on the boat. it doesn't look that hungry. I used to melt cheese or chocolate onto the bait lid, they have to gnaw at it to get it off.... and then!.....😬
Give Roland's traps half a snickers bar works every time on our boat....in winter we get between 5 to 10 of them
Rats also like pumpkin seeds. Seeya Rob...........here in Australia we can get a pellet poison called TomCat2, they just can't leave it alone, they'll even chew a hole in the bucket to get to it.
With the number of mooring lines you have out this was inevitable. You need ratguards on every line.
Gonna need a bigger trap
Eurgh there was a rat on my boat this winter it caused so much damage before I finally got the bugger. Also they're really bloody noisy at night! I was so happy when I finally got rid of the damned thing!
Also it'll take 2-3 days before they become accustomed to the traps. Being afraid of new things is one of their survival skills.
I love your optimism thinking it’s only one rat hahaha
Hi, we tried the wire trap but our camera showed they were frightened off new objects in their area. We hah five rats in our Garage. We used the large Victor Rat Traps on Amazon. did not set them first night and no bait. You could watch them sniff it only, third night put bait but not set them, fifth night bait and set, snap got two rats bigger than my hand, threw out traps set up two more and then one. They have not returned. The night viewing camera is handy.
I would have left the room as it was and just shut the door, he's far too big for the green ones, but he might eventually be tempted to try going into the big one.. it's just a waiting game, hopefully it won't bring the family along for the adventure.😱
camper van has mice. we use Comet cleanser and Irish spring soap shavingsspread around
That trap with the food is a bad ideal. Once he feed on that stuff you have to go find him. SMELLY!
The best traps are a deep bucket half full of water with a roller across the top smeared with peanut butter
Steel wool will block holes around pipes and cables
Not ideal in a marine environment, you'll just end up with rust
Rats are extremely wary. You need to leave the same trap in place for a week before he'll venture inside.
1:09 Try use apple in the traps. Rats are both hungry and thirsty.
time for discs its the damage they can do to wiring plus the filth they leave behind wear gloves next time you handle the traps try and leave no scent, use peanut butter they love it ,
There are a lot of good suggestions from viewers. the old fashioned spring loaded wood base traps seem to work best with peanut butter or peanuts. You have to close off all access to your boat. The anchor ropes are the most likely means for the rats to get on board but they can jump five feet straight up so at low tide if the mud is dry they could be jumping on board. If you use poison then there will be the problem of smell. Good luck!
Rats also like to get in out of the cold. To be warm. So keep the traps set! Walnuts attached with a rubber band to the trigger of the trap works well.
Not sure if this has already been mentioned but make sure any below the waterline skin fittings are closed in case the vermin decides to chew through the plastic pipes and sink the vessel.
I agree with @OurNewLand. Get the largest, rat, snap trap and hot glue a nut in place on the trigger. I use raw almonds as their size makes it easier to glue down, and I scrape off a bit of the nut to release more smell. Also, set the traps along the wall. This has worked for me many, many times.
Glue traps work the best.
Skippy chunky style peanut butterhelped me trap over 30 rats. I use a Victor snap trap. Ratguards on your morning lines...
The rat will only be coming in for shelter or to build a breeding nest. While they have access to outside they will not normally take any bait as already have food and water source. They are neophobic so will be wary of anything new like traps. You need to seal them inside the boat for the rat to get hungry and go for the bait. Though you'd be best to find where the rat is getting in to the bedroom and seal it up. Obviously somewhere near where you removed the insulation.
Get some spring traps. Nothing else will work . Humane traps are waste of time. If you catch it and take it somewhere and dump it it then becomes someone else's problem so best to kill it. I used to have rat problems on my 52' wooden boat down on Canvey Island. I found the only way was spring traps. Put hard plastic or wooden discs on your ropes but make sure they cannot tip over. Move everything that is usable as bedding off the boat or put in good plastic containers. They love paper & cardboard as well. Don't leave any food on the boat unless in a tin box or rigid sealed container. This problem could take a fair while to solve because there's more than one running about your boat. Good luck.
Time to get a Jack Russell!
When you catch him, name him Remy, and hire him as a chef! ;-)
You have to put stuff around the trap to hide it .they can see it is not normal. Put a towel over top and sides
the scent from your hands alert the rat that its a trap
Cover the traps with the bed sheets and or the pillows so that it can't see that it's a trap.
I always use flour on my indoor traps.
To get rid of the rat when you catch it or if you catch it is to tie a string on the trap and throw the trap in the water for a few minutes and that’s it.
5 gallon metal bucket. A plastic pipe flange with a short nipple to the side of a tee with some pipe on either side. Some peanut oil in the bottom of the bucket. He will jump in to the pipe. Drop into the darkness that smells so good. But he can't get traction to climb out. Use black plastic fittings.
12 gauge shotgun works really well, but you might have to patch a hole or two.
Find the run, leave it undisturbed, wear gloves set trap with Bacon rind and peanut butter, secure the rind and put the trap on their run.The CCTV camera being so close may put them off as they have good hearing. Then leave for 3 days, if no catch, leave it, they will get confident..
If you are going to catch rats, a good piece of advice is never touch the entrance to traps. Rats are suspicious and will not enter a trap if it can smell people who have touched it
Chocolate is the answer they love it
Steel discs on all of your lines....like cornhole9699 suggests...they become a massive problem once aboard, destructive as hell, and damaging to your health too...
The two green traps are too small, that is a mouse that is you need the trap with the poison, or the bigger steel trap and as far as peanut butter that is a excellent choice, sometimes wheat macaroni or noodles they also like a lot, just because one day day pass does it mean they don't like they are probably very leery of your trap, you've got to give them time to get used to that you'll catch It
Chocolate spread works a treat. Ask me how I know😂
Yeah use good ole whack trap with peanut butter 😮 also put on uneven surface they usually lose balance then 😊 whack.😊
It will take some time for rats to trust the traps, they will ignore it at first and the more you disturb the area the less likely you will be to catch them. Also they like chocolate and peanuts.
I use bacon bits and peanut butter. Works good.
Hi,I would have definitely worn a face shield doing that job, cheers Roly🇬🇧.
Use a bucket half the size of the one bed with sugar soap or liquid soap with a board leading upto it, in they go and can't get out. Liquid soap on a plate works a treat if outdoors in a garden as they eat it and away they go the end.
I found the best method was glue pads. Never fails...
some bait boxes will take a trap if their is some little raised corners in themiddle where it goes through to bait section a standard rat trap in their
Also, if you keep moving stuff about, they’ll keep away from it, rats are very clever they know to keep away from stuff that moves about,
Leave your traps in one place it might take 2 to 3 days for them to trust it ,
I’d say he’s getting on the boat via mouring ropes. Big ships use a circle barrier to prevent rats from coming on the boat. I noticed that you don’t have them.
