She does sing a little bit off key, I don`t want to be mean, no, but I had her cassette ( yes, I`m old, heh) but in those early albums you can hear it, and I remember being a lil girl listening to it, and it kind of bother me though.. soI don`t think Whitney is lying, she is being a little rude there, but honest.

Also do you remember her coca cola ad ? She looked so good their! Also I still don't know why ppl were so mad she lipsynced I believe she lipsynced the mtv vma performance of vibeology or it sounded off like she didn't sound good live but to me she sounded good on that performance ppl were dramatic when saying she sung that song live bad. @@lizzradio893 you hear it at those points where she has to like "hold" her voice longer , I mean, when she hits she one note and has to hold it for a time, I think it is part to the fact that her voice is like that, a bit weaker if I may say so. (English is not my main language so sorry I`m kind of struggling here to trying to find the right words, lol) But yeah, I still like her, ,she appealed for me very much when I was a girl, the marketing of her records was very successful. I mostly loved her because of the dancing, the step dancing and all, I really liked her. Now I feel nostalgia when seeing and hearing her. :)

NO! Whitney told NO LIES! But she was just as guilty, because Clive Davis was her svengali, sold her to the press as coming from a wealthy upper class community. For many yrs no one ever knew where she truly came from and that’s a fact. Now with regard to what she said about Paula, Whitney was in the trenches with the industry executives who knew her, that being said Whitney had no reason to lie but if she knew those tapes would have ever made the rounds today on social media then she would have never recorded herself having said a word.

Whitney didn't lie & as far as vocals go she had NOTHING to worry about in that department from any presumed threat from Paula. I did cringe hearing her literally DRAG Paula for it ( her TRUE statements) though. Once on film & audio recorded what was said can't be taken back. Off key described it spot on, but nevertheless what does one expect from "popular" music? It is hot this 1 second & out of style the next. I don't blame Paula for trying it though. She knew that her time as a Lakers dancer was probably a short-lived gig. Kudos to her for going for it. As I recall most established music artists were "shook" in the late 1980s & early 1990s as the vibe, music tastes & sound had changed. Whitney had Mariah to contend with, Prince & MJ were still vying to see who was gonna be on top between those 2, "rap" music had then morphed into gangster rap, & even New Edition was contending with New Kids on the Block. No wonder they all diversified after Bobby Brown left & formed BBD, Ralph Tresvant was a solo artist & they added Johnny Gill. Hammer & his huge entourage was hot & happening & Vanilla Ice was the blue-eyed rebuttal to the East Coast rap artists. Music was truly in flux, but there were some good artists that were newly found. Toni Braxton, Traci Spencer, Shanice, & TLC & Aaliyah to name a few.

You had to live through the 80s as a teen-ager to truly understand how Paula Abdul took over the mainstream. She was EVERYWHERE. My recollection during that time was that Janet was all for her success and was proud of her. I don't recall them being pitted against each other. Now maybe that was just Janet taking the high road but Janet's career thrived after Paula's faltered. When Janet hit with "That's the Way Love Goes" and continued her streak through the 90s, no one could deny her power. I don't know if social media is fanning the flames between them now, but during they heyday, we were all fans of BOTH of them. It wasn't that weird thing like today with these weird fandoms where you choose sides.

I guess it also did not hurt that back then it was said that Paula also had a short fling with one of the Jackson brothers. From a dancer to a high-rated pass around chick. They all use their talents to get to where they want to be & use all to their advantage. And there's also the story that L.A Reid talked about, when he had Paula Abdul in his house, and Pebbles came over. She was beating on the door, saying that she knew that someone else was in there with him. Apparently, Paula went and hid in the closet until she left (according to him). That's pretty accurate, since Janet had done two albums and did quite a few performances of the singles on television...and none of them made the impact or fell into rotation like they did after Paula worked with her on "What Have You Done For Me Lately" and "Nasty". That's a fact. In all honesty, the Janet before the "Control" album and the Janet afterwards are like night & day.

@@GilbertGTV Paula was an unknown talent, she did not teach Janet how to dance, she taught her some new moves that matched Janet's sassy persona. If you go back to an earlier time, Janet was performing intricate dance numbers with the Jacksons at the MGM Studios. It was clear that Janet was able to dance as a young girl, before Paula. In many of her interviews, Janet expressed how her, and Micheal would dance at his studios to old musicals. So, I must disagree with your evaluation on Paula teaching Janet how to dance. Nonetheless, I respect Paula's talent. But she was not a household name until Janet become the catalyst for her work. All Janet needed was for someone to break her away from her father's dominance. Lastly, Janet worked with several choreographers afterward to garnish greater success.

Paula Abdul is an underrated icon. Forever the Debbie Allens of many people's past n present times. Her artistry was ahead of it's time too; since so many artists; famous or not; recorded like her; with others involved. The whole public album thing that she did a press conference for to defend herself is ridiculous; considering so many artists now get away with it like I said. She had flaws n such; but who doesn't in this world; and yes even many entertainers nowadays still n worse. She inspired so many with her resilience, and inner strength on always being FOREVER YOUR GIRL. It's great to know she's alive nowadays n living however she wants. Yet she's beyond just an entertainer, she's outspoken. She says things that maybe make some mad or disagree, but it's her opinion; like so many other people's opinions. For people will live a healthier life by agreeing to disagree, and calling a truce vs condescending & demoralizing actions. Nowadays you can control your meds better than back in the day, so that plays in the factor. Also Hollywood Walk Of Fames are funded most of the time; as her fans funded it n others involved; as most stars' Hollywood Walk Of Fames on them LA streets. It's a paid petition ordeal too. She has earned her career with her hard work in performing on stage; choreographing forever; releasing massive hits and tours to the masses; scoring huge awards; and being a humanitarian for a number of topics, that are still hot topics to this day.

She chose not to dance, and I think it was really more about how the labels didn't want Whitney to be an RnB artist because they'd make more money if they focused on her voice. Smart move because that's when her choreographed routines pretty much stopped, but she went on to prove she could be a megastar with pop and rnb hits.

Actually Whitney could dance she just doesn't try. Anyone can learn how to dance it ain't hard. Its hard to learn how to dance like Michael Jackson and its hard to sing like Whitney. Whitney have the crowds going crazy over her voice weather she's sitting or just standing. Michael Jackson can sing and dance there's no excuse for someone to lip sync. unless you can't sing. I don't pay to see anyone lip sync.

Great profile on Paula, Karine! I lived through that era and loved both Janet and Paula, though I always knew that Janet was the real vocalist of the two and that Paula's dancing, charisma and star quality got her into making music. Paula's songs worked for her. I never saw her as a replacement to Janet; Paula was instrumental in making Janet the ultimate performer for the Control album videos. I think because of what Paula accomplished in the industry, they saw room for her. But no one could touch a Jackson or dare replace Janet. Everyone loved Janet and both of their careers did amazing at the time and never interfered. I think younger people learning about them now are the ones who are comparing them. Gen Xers saw room for them both and generally didn't pit them against each other. They complemented each other.

In the Whitney documentary, Whitney said Paula didn’t even sing her songs in the studio. It’s the same with Jennifer Lopez later with Mariah Carey. Jennifer kept the vocals from Ashanti and others that should have be considered duets. The industry always try to erase black artists. It’s not the artist’s fault but it does happen.

I don't get all the substance abuse issues but wouldn't be surprised if she had a lot of aches and pains or injuries and things spiraled from there. She definitely is a dancing talent! Whitney did not lie, but Paula had a special something to add to the mix and was an entertainer!

As a musicaholic for all genres and decades, I need to say, that throughout music history there have been those that have been replacements or those left out, that have nothing to do diversity of appeal. Prime example was Lydia Pense of the band Cold Blood, who was put under contract and semi popular at the same time as Janis Joplin as their stylings of music and voice were similar. ( personally I prefer Pense's voice) Her recordings are found here on youtube. It's just the wheel of fortune in many cases.

Paula was Janet's choreographer only during the "Control" era. She went on to work with others, namely Anthony Thomas and Tina Landon. As far as Yvette Marine's accusations about her vocals being blended with Paula's, prior to this, it was revealed the the vocals for the Mary Jane Girls, which she was a part of, were sung by other singers, with the lead singer Jo Jo, being the exception. When she first came out with the accusations, I was baffled because she wasn't even singing with the group she was once part of.
