Another trick for keeping soap scum buildup is to use car wax on the surface of the shower and sink. The water and soap just slide right down the drain. Only needs to be done a few times a year.
I watched a TV show a great many years ago where they did an experiment in a bathroom. First, they disinfected everything. Then they did swab tests on various surfaces, including some brand-new toothbrushes. Next, they had people using the bathroom as per usual few they next few days, while always closing the toilet lid before flushing. Then they took a second set of swabs. Finally, they had people using the bathroom for a few more days, this time leaving the toilet lid up all the time. Then they took a third set of swabs. The first two rounds of swabs did not show very much that was unhealthy, but the final set of swabs showed enormous amounts of fecal coliform, even on the toothbrushes that were on the other side of the room, several feet from the toilet. I have never forgotten that. Not only do I always keep the lid down for flushing, I also store my toothbrush in the bathroom cupboard. EWWWW!
I've read or seen something similar. I've kept our lids closed for years because of this. And, we have electric toothbrushes, so those get kept in the drawer. (Our toilet is in a separate room from the sink and shower area).
I believe bathrooms get dusty, because of the towels when we’re drying off from taking a shower also, but yes, bathrooms get dirty faster then any room in the house. Good points, Taryn. I have never left toothbrushes out in the open. That’s what medicine cabinets are for. Keeping the toilet seat down when you flush it is going to be something I’m going to do. Thank you. And that tip about the shower curtain liner is great. Always gets that nasty, orange mold on it at the bottom. I usually wash the whole thing, periodically. I hate it when my bathrooms are dirty, and that’s the rooms that you could clean every day. And kitchens. Thanks for the great tips.
Love these tips. I've kept our toilet lid closed ever since I learned about the spray of the toilet water. Yuck. Plus, I don't like looking inside the toilet unless I'm getting ready to use it.
Keeping your shower curtain closed after you’ve showered also helps it to dry which reduces the buildup. I’ve seen lots of people leave it bunched up to the side after getting out. Something simple, but every little bit helps.
Yes, always stretch the curtain out to dry. And the best way to have a clean shower curtain is to regularly wash it! Just wash it with your whites every week (bleach) - easy.
Came here looking for a comment like this. 🙂 It was one of the first things my son noticed when he went off to college and shared a bathroom with other people than family. They would leave the curtain bunched up and it would grow mold. He'd get so irritated. He also didn't realize that I would pay a little extra and get the mold/mildew resistant liners. That helps too. I leave it open to let all of the steam out of the shower and shake the curtain as I pull it back across too, to help get a little extra water off as well. I also have noticed that if my curtain doesn't actually touch the bottom of the tub, but is about an inch or so above it (still well in there) it doesn't get as icky on the bottom edge either. That usually would happen if the tub was draining slowly and the water with all of the rinsed off dirt and soaps, shampoos, and whatever else was used was swirling around the bottom of the curtain before going down the drain. 🤢
As one other person commented, I squeegee my shower after using it. I also keep an old, but decent looking wash cloth at my shower that I wipe the areas that the squeegee couldn't get. Additionally, I scrub the shower once every week or so while I'm in the shower - that is the day I use my deep conditioner because I'm in there for a few extra minutes. Lastly, I took the label off my Clorox wipes which leaves a clean white container. I did this with my Glade air freshen as well. Its less intrusive and by leaving it out, you are more likely to use them.
I rinse my tub and shower with hot water with the hand wand after every shower and it stays clean and only needs scrubbing every couple of months. It’s just me, so there's that but it works so well. I rinse the shower curtain liner too and I’ve had the same shower curtain liner for years. It has never gotten mold. I did buy a mold less or mold resistant one. I also use liquid soap but didn’t know that helps. I also clean my sink and the surrounding area with my hand like that pretty frequently. It’s easy, fast and stays so much cleaner. Thanks for the TP tip. I’m going to try this one. I need to find a Kleenex one because I use them all the time.
I have a separate toilet and we still close the lid. Yes, I too am a fan of wiping the vanity sink as you go and we use a squeegee on the shower glass after our showers. I have a packet of wipes which I keep in the vanity cupboard to wipe over the tops of tiles and window sills and surfaces in general as we go. It’s true! But you can definitely find body wash without the microplastics in them (the ones that have glitter or exfoliants in them I definitely avoid). I also refill the liquid soaps from the pouches to cut the waste.

I keep my lid closed unless it’s in use. I cover my toothbrush with a toothbrush cover and then cover the entire toothbrush and handle (it’s electric) with a clear sleeve from makeup cotton rounds. Thanks for the tip; I just replace my inner plastic liner periodically when it gets moldy (so hard to clean) and I when I run the fabric outer curtain through the washing machine it still comes out with some black spots on the bottom. Maybe Taryn's tips will help the situation! :-)
It is a good idea to close the toilet while flush it, but then there are drops on the seat, so it' s important to clean it regularly! The advice with the bamboo toiletpaper could be a real gamechanger. I always wonder where all the dust is coming from! I'll definitely test it. Thanks!

my toothbrush & paste next to toilet but I always have it covered with a paper towel- I will forever close the lid of toilet- never knew that TY so much Taryn
We switched to a glycerin bar soap, and the shower has been staying pretty clean. We dry the faucet/metal things after showering with our towel each time, and they still look new. Recently, I've been hitting the sink faucet with spray wax (for the car) for a little bit longer shine time. I cringe when someone comes over and doesn't close the toilet seat! Ewww! Will have to try the shower liner trick -that thing does get gross.
I always rinse my shower after rinsing myself. Unfortunately I have glass doors. Squeegee is a pita. I have a small hand towel. Dry the doors a quick wipe keeps the glass nice and clean
That’s my point. A mask alone in my car is still me alone, not someone else’s spit in the sink or loogie I’m wiping w/ my bare hands. With that reasoning why not just wipe the top of the toilet seat with a soapy hand too and “just wash your hands!”
@@mamabirdie734 Well I clean the bathrooms at my church every week and I simply wash my hands when I’m done. I was a nurse for 40 years and never caught any disease from a patient either.
Train your boys to pee sitting down. You’ll never have to clean the floor or the outside of the toilet again. (Well, less often anyway like the rest of these tips.)
Since you mentioned shower curtains... which please do a video on curtains vs. shower doors. Which are easier to keep clean. I absolutely hate the chore of trying to keep the shower door tracks clean 😣
Some toilets allow matter to stick to the sides of the bowl after flushing. 🤮 Clean the toilet, drain the bowl, dry it completely & apply car wax to the inside of the bowl. Problem solved.
I tried using a fabric shower curtain liner but it gets totally soaked and get water all over the floor. I don’t understand how people use them. Am I doing something wrong? 🤷🏼♀️
What I do is I use a fabric one on the inside and I make sure it hangs inside the tub (so this is the one closest to you when you're showering) and then I have a second decorative fabric curtain on the outside that hangs outside of the tub. You can hang both on the same hooks as well. Have you tried that?
Buy a box of disposable face towels. Not only will they help your complexion by keeping bacteria from your towels off your face, you can use them to wipe down the sinks, counters, and toilet after you've washed your face, before you throw them away.
My biggest problem is hair and fur on a white title floor that have I have trouble picking up with a broom and mop? Somehow the black pet fur still gets into my bathroom. Wiping down the floor is also difficult to get everything and this process also makes me dizzy. Don't know how to make easier on me.
I always close the toilet when I flush but open it back up after flushing. That way I don’t have to touch when I go back 😂. I use my hand towel to wipe out the sink and counter every morning and put a clean one out for the day. I use a paper towel to dust and hair that accumulates. I’m a bit of germaphobe . Not so funny story: My 4 year old granddaughter came out of the bathroom bring the toilet bowl brush and waving it around 😮. I nearly had a heart attack! We scrubbed our hands good after that! 😂
I do the same. I close the lid just when I’m flushing, but then keep it up. My toilet is right next to my shower in a humid area and I found when I kept the lid down all the time and if I didn’t clean the toilet every single week I would start to get a little bit of mold spots under the rim. I also put a fresh hand towel on the end of my bathroom counter every morning to wipe up any water on the counter and my faucets. I’ll have to check into that bamboo toilet paper, that sounds interesting.
Please dont discourage bar soap. All the plastic we use for things like hand soap are contributing to the pfafs & plastic problems you were just talking about. Just get a soap holder with a solid base & a little straining piece on top of it.
Yes - I am also careful in sourcing body wash. I only use the ones without plastics, parabens and fragrance but I should have mentioned this in the video.
I don't know why people have their toilet lids up, EVER. Who wants to look into a toilet? The PFAS in toilet paper comes from receipt paper that gets recycled with other papers. They all end up in the recycled-paper TP. 😳 I switched to bamboo for that reason, too. I wish they would just stop accepting receipt paper in recycling. Or better yet, stop using those chemicals in receipts, or anywhere, for that matter! Who the heck decided that was okay? Liquid soap is nice, but it creates a lot of plastic waste. I know because one of my kids is addicted to his liquid hand soap, and he uses a lot (too much) of it. I ended up buying soap by the gallon so he can re-use his pump bottles. It's not perfect, but it's better. 🙂
Love your comment! I didn’t know that about receipts, but that is pretty gross. I really hate even touching receipts because of the plastic coating on them. And great point about the body wash - I tried to buy the refillable soaps and washes in the pouches, but I wish that there was a better solution!
Wow! I never thought of that. It makes sense. I always shred all my receipts then transfer all my shredded paper to a paper bag and send it to recycling. Yikes!
Mine is connected to the hot water to adjust the temperature. I agree with all the suggestions to add bidets. I have a septic system that functions better without toilet paper in the septic tank.
@cynthiamahlin4815 I'm pretty sure mine paid for itself with all the toilet paper I didn't need to buy. It's such a better experience. It's not even close.
If everyone rinses their business (toothpaste, spit, etc.) down the sink, a proper cleaning with a cloth once a week should be fine. I find the faucet needs more regular attention than the sink.
I watched a tv series once and I've read that random tests were done in secure trays in bars/restaurants etc have faecal matter in about 60% 😮😮😮😮😮 how is that even possible?
Good ideas, however the reason why I use bar soap is because I need fragrance free. I’ve looked for fragrance free Dove body wash and have not found it.
No way would I ever wash my sink or any other surfaces with my hands..after being a nurse for over 40 years..and attending infection controlled in-services and eventually teaching them..this is a disgusting practice..and after showering you can spray down your shower with vinegar or many other surfaces..vinegar has antibacterial properties..just remember to allow it to sit for at 10 minutes to allow it to do its job before rinsing..vinegar also produces a nice shine..I use vinegar a lot..its a natural product ..it will also prevent mildew..I don't know why if cleaning your bathroom you would actually have mold growing...mildew maybe but shouldn't have actual mold..I have kept my toliet lid closed for decades..and don't keep the toothbrushes out on the counter either..you can also rinse your toothbrushes with vinegar and rinse them with no lingering taste
I use Scott Comfort Plus toilet paper. I called the customer service ph# on the package and they assured me there are no chemicals, dyes, etc in their product. 🤷♀️ I think Angel Soft is supposed to be another but haven’t checked.
@@susanhenley8240 Hence, the shrug emoji. That’s just what they told me. However, I will say I no longer have the recent sensitivity irritation to TP since switching brands.
Since I have a cat that uses the human toilet, I can't attach to it a bidet. So I use a plain water pitcher (cold water) , a bar of soap, and a small towel to dry myself. Works better than any toilet paper!
Ok maybe you won't have to never clean your bathroom again but these are 5 things you can do that will help keep your bathroom so much cleaner - for longer!

Lasted study says leave your bed unmade as the coldness kills more dust mites !
@@JoanMurray-j5y I give it one hour and then it must be made!
I always close the lid before flushing, and my toothbrush does not sit out in the open.
I enjoyed this video. 😊❤
Thank you so much! 😊❤️
Yes I’ve been doing that game changer
I just use a fresh washcloth every time
Не е екологично да се използват толкова много кърпички за еднократна употреба.
Thank you!
Just use a washcloth 🙄
My biggest problem is hair and fur on a white title floor that have I have trouble picking up with a broom and mop? Somehow the black pet fur still gets into my bathroom. Wiping down the floor is also difficult to get everything and this process also makes me dizzy. Don't know how to make easier on me.
Have you tried a cordless vacuum? I vacuum my bathroom with this all the time - we also have so much dust and pet hair on our tiles!
Ha, too funny! Thank you for sharing!
What about using the shower curtain liner
That is what I have - we have a liner and then a decorative outside one.
@@tarynmaria_ Agreed, and I definitely have a soap scum problem, at least now I know why!
Wow! I never thought of that. It makes sense. I always shred all my receipts then transfer all my shredded paper to a paper bag and send it to recycling. Yikes!
@@mamabirdie734 I know. At least we know that paper is getting recycled. Unlike glass and plastic, where the reports are sketchy.
I use wipes to wipe down the sink, counter and toilet
Thank you for sharing!
Doesn’t most liquid body wash contain the forever chemicals
Some do - you don't want the ones with glitter or exfoliating beads! I also try to stay away from any with parabens and fragrance.
I am 56 we always have kept the toilet closed
I use the pre soak and then a hot wash with bleach for my shower curtain
Re Bambo toilet paper: One word. Bidet. Seriously.
Castile leaves a white film too
I didn't know that!
If everyone rinses their business (toothpaste, spit, etc.) down the sink, a proper cleaning with a cloth once a week should be fine. I find the faucet needs more regular attention than the sink.
Thank you for sharing!
Disinfectant wipes are very bad for the enviroment. I clean my bathroom twice weekly, very easy if you are not lazy.
I watched a tv series once and I've read that random tests were done in secure trays in bars/restaurants etc have faecal matter in about 60% 😮😮😮😮😮 how is that even possible?
Yikes!!
Good ideas, however the reason why I use bar soap is because I need fragrance free. I’ve looked for fragrance free Dove body wash and have not found it.
Good call! We have been using Lush, which is fragrance free (it has oils and has a smell but it doesn't last).
Let’s move forward 😅 already
I use baby wipes and clean that way.
Awesome 🤩
What do you do with the used baby wipe? Landfill?
@HannadayFLO i use them like twice a week. Where does your trash go?!
Can't you use something that can be washed, like a swedish cleaning cloth? They can go into the washing machine
@wendyeames5758 No. I don't do sponges or cloths. We are not talking about saving the environment in this video
use peroxide instead of bleach.
I’ll try that!
I clean the bathroom after getting out of the bath. Everything is wet, so cleaning it is a doddle.
Totally!
Can't see the bamboo toilet paper link.
So sorry! Here you go: rstyle.me/+yYCNqv8q9eJS4nROUa6g7A
everyone knows to close the lid
No, unfortunately everyone doesn’t.
They may well know but often don't do it.
Forever chemicals in our TP? Ewww!
I use Scott Comfort Plus toilet paper. I called the customer service ph# on the package and they assured me there are no chemicals, dyes, etc in their product. 🤷♀️ I think Angel Soft is supposed to be another but haven’t checked.
@@mamabirdie734 Good to know. But since TP is a wood pulp biproduct, doesn't that mean it's all been at least bleached? Hmm.
@@susanhenley8240 Hence, the shrug emoji. That’s just what they told me. However, I will say I no longer have the recent sensitivity irritation to TP since switching brands.
why liquor soap, reasons why helps me, maybe someone in your audience, might , know.
Bamboo toilet paper? Really? Most people having trouble paying for cheap off-brand toilet paper now. Get real, this is an ad for luxury TP
Bamboo isn't a luxury - it grows faster than any tree. Also, this is not an ad - this is the toilet paper I buy and use.
Yuk! Cleaning with your hands in the sink is not for me.
❤❤❤
Thank you! 😊
Since I have a cat that uses the human toilet, I can't attach to it a bidet. So I use a plain water pitcher (cold water) , a bar of soap, and a small towel to dry myself. Works better than any toilet paper!
I love that your cat uses the toilet!
Don't sit so close to the camera. Sit back a bit. Your face doesn't need to fill the screen.
Guess what? I can sit as close to or as far away from the camera as I want to because it’s my channel 😉
@@tarynmaria_ You have a beautiful face. Stay as you are.
