I live in northern California and just don't like wasting water since we often have drought! When I turn my shower on it takes a little bit to get warm, so I keep a small bucket in the tub to capture the cold water. I use it to water plants.
You are a breath of fresh air on Fridays! My practical tip as a single person is when you are making food that takes effort, buy the ingredients when on sale and make extra and freeze it for meals down the road. I made a big meatloaf with hamburger that was on sale, and immediately sliced and froze two meals and ate the rest over a few days. I do that with soups also. I don’t have a large freezer, just a fridge/freezer size, but I do have enough room for some extra meals!
I laughed out loud at the running shower part! That’s my husband! Has driven me absolutely crazy for 34 years. I showed him your video and said See?!?! SEE?!?!
We use a credit card, and I don’t even wait until the end of the month. When I order something online, which is necessary, as I am disabled, and it is very hard to get out and get things, I pay it off immediately. If I ever forget to pay something immediately, it drives me crazy.
Take coffee with me when I head out to run errands; if not, I'll for sure stop at Tim Hortons (Canadian, eh! 😉) and get coffee AND a bagel. The kicker is that I don't even like Timmies coffee anymore.. it's awful!!!.. so bitter and they never ever fix my bagel like I ask and I don't enjoy it!.. Aaand coffee and a bagel is over $5 😮😢 .. so I take coffee from home and I keep a bag of almonds in my car; just 10 almonds is very filling and healthy. I figured just this change alone is saving me at least $40/ month. I've been able to increase my monthly savings from $100/month to $140-50/ month. You've helped me so much, Kate. I love you 💓🫂😘🎉🎵🌷
Hi Kate! I drink water mostly everyday. And I will drink a glass or 2 of milk. I do buy a liter of Coke if I ever am going to have pizza. I just don't want to drink water or milk with pizza. I don't order pizza from Domino's,Pizza Hut etc. I get my Kroger has on sale. Like here recently I got a Red Baron pizza for 2.99 and then another time a Digiorno pizza for 4.99 - both on sale at Kroger. I keep my electric bill down also. I only have the lights on in the room I am in. And turn off lights when I leave said room. I don't let the shower run long before I get in. I get it to right temp and get in. I don't rush or time it. I like to relax in the shower. I leave my air fryer unplugged and my tablet when it's charged unplug charger. I unplug the charger on my phone .
Get low! I do most of these things. And yes, phantom energy is real. Lol on your guest's long shower. When my kids were small, 5 of them, I had An assembly line when it was shower time. One in, one out. Limit of 10 minutes. And I do take short showers. Not sure if the do. 🙂
Get Low, Low, Low - how Low can you go?!!! ❤ all of these. I actually go a step further on the water. I use a bucket in the shower to catch the water while it's warming up, then use it for my garden. Same with the tap in the kitchen and save the cold water for my dogs.
Yes, water I have a friend that leaves the water running when doing dishes, I fill the sink 1/4 of the way and rinse in the second sink. 🧡 all good ideas to be mindful.
I followed your advice on an earlier video and put savings in my budget just like my bills. It works like a charm and it’s automated so I can’t forget!
Interesting, I never in my life thought about turning the water on before getting in the shower. Not because I am frugal, only it never was a possibility for me. Maby that's an American thing. I am from Austria. I guess there are people that have frugal habbits and don't even feel like being frugal. That shifts my mindset.
Get Low! I recently started unplugging my router at night. Yes phantom electricity is a thing. I know you are friends with 'Under the Median' and they have discussed this too! I always pack snacks when going on trips, live alone now so its easy to accommodate just me :-).
The lights and water is so engrained in me from growing up that I cringe when I see other's leaving them on for long amounts of time. I love using my credit card, paying it off, and then using the points we earn on fancy NYC dinners. We live close to NYC so a night out is always a treat, especially when we are not "paying" for it (hahah!)
Gramma Katie checking in. Good morning. I keep trying to make my daughter understand about soft drinks. Especially if we have a cheat and eat out. Order water . Those other dri.ks can add up fast
Kate, you are so right! I started putting away savings first. I go big though, I save about 50% of my income. I am getting a raise this year also of about $2.50, and a new job location. So that helps! I do play the Credit Card CashBack Game - but I play it really well! I buy nothing I cannot afford in cash or move from savings. I pay everything off within the week or a few days. I never let a balance slip. I'm very disciplined, and I didn't just happen to be that way. That took a lot of mindful self education and months of practice. Saying no & setting boundaries, even for yourself is such a big deal! So....pay yourself first. Never buy anything you cant afford to pay off. & Then make sure everything is paid. Theres no guide to being an adult, but it does help to seek advice where needed & for that, we thank you :)
Practice ways to live below your means. Keep a budget. That's all there is. Move money from one category to another where needed to extend if need be. Put $25 per paycheck automatically into an account. Mine goes into my mortgage account. Setup an amount on payroll direct deposit so rent mortgage is separate from my bills and spending. It's so nice to keep it separate. Either automatically put money in regular savings or put left over into savings at the beginning or end of the month. I usually have$ 100 left over each month. So at the end or beginning of the month, I reset my financial ledger back to a set amount in checking. Anything left over from that set amount gets transferred to the savings. It's typically around 100$ saved per month. Slowly adds up.
Australia puts on/off switches on all of their electric outlets to stop “Phantom Power”. It’s a thing. Just as easy to unplug the coffee pot and microwave while it’s not in use.
I ate breakfast before I went to a free event with free food. I was so full I couldn’t get any of the free food. I just forgot because I am so used to filling up before I leave the house 😅 .. I was a little bummed lol
We have been using our larder (food and other) to have a much higher life style than if we didn't stock up on good to excellent prices. In general, we have fewer skus but more volume of the skus we do have. Today we stocked up on 24.? oz cans of coffee for $3.99. It Martinson's from New York which is not a brand local to us so I compare it price wise to store brand coffee. The cheapest I've seen store brand coffee of this general size is @$7.50 for sometime now so, our savings per can will be at least $3.50. We bought a LOT for sometime to come and in doing so will be spending less elsewise on what we are considering more of an investment purchase; something we buy now for savings in the future.
11.22.2024 As I'm rinsing dishes, I run it in the other sink w/the stopper & dish liquid in, so I can use that water to wash my next sink full of dishes. Cuz as I use dishes, I slip them in that water. Just add some hot water when I start washing that load. 👊
Get low. Kate, the tip about the number of drinks in our homes can also fit with other things- chips, crackers, breads. We can select a few we like and probably don't need a choice of 10 or 12 in our home. Sometimes these either go stale before we eat them or get pushed to the back of a cabinet. This has happened in my house until I got wise.
I very rarely purchase sodas. I make southern sweet tea, buy tea bags and sugar, that's it. Cheap drink, make a gallon at a time. When I shower, water used to get wet and a soapy rag. Then off. Once washed, back on to rinse off. I'm one to unplug everything that's not being used except major appliances and TV.. Electricity bill stays really low.
I have a 98 year old house. Evidently the tap water/service pipe is OLD. Never thought much about it, but got a letter from the city after my meter was changed. Got a faucet filter now + I'm Amazed at the great water quality. WOW. Now I hope to be feeling better too. News ystdy that our water supply has too many Nitrates in it .. way above Federal safety standards. Iowa
I like to set goals- I love a good challenge. Our Christmas challenge is to buy 3 items for each other (my spouse) The kicker is we can't spend more than $10 total. lol My next challenge is no spend January. But the bigger challenge is to do this through March. My hubby is on board :) Our goal: Cat emergency fund replenish.
Get Low!! I love these tips. I always take either a coffee or a drink when I am going out and running errands. I will also tend to eat breakfast at home before I leave, so I am not as hungry 🙂
Get low,I am getting bombarded with Christmas ads everywhere, you tubers showing all the Christmas Decorations to buy and all the DYI projects,Not to mention when you walk into the dollar store,I am very good this year ,i just am Not buying anymore Christmas Decorations period no matter how cute or animated.i see all the Christmas sweaters too everywhere, nope, i have a few and that's it.i actually went threw my Christmas Decorations and have consigned the extra this year.Right now it's about Thanksgiving and being thankful and scoring a 19 pound turkey for 49 cent a pound😊Have a great week🦃
Kate! Happy Friday!! I just watched a video where the lady was doing a savings challenge with fun little games. Called Merry Grinchmas savings challenge. It looks like fun so I'm adding that to my tracking. Gamifying my savings. Should be fun. Have you ever done one of these?
I’m embarrassed to say. I am in New York and I use Tap Water. That water thing happened to me before. The Guest took about an hour shower. I was furious.
Savings first. Don't spend on a credit card without the money. Don't have car payments. Those are our big ones. I have to admit, we're a disaster with lights. There are 4 of us, and we're constantly wandering thru all the rooms, so most lights are on most of the time🤣. Happy Friday Kate!
I don’t drink alcohol or fizzy drinks. I only ever have water, herbal tea, soya milk and coffee. But for coffee I use nespresso and dolce gusto pod machines, as I can’t stand instant and making coffee from beans or ground is too much effort, so that is kind of a cost. My showers are super quick and short though, I have straight bob hair so I only ever spend like 10 mins showering at most, never have baths as they are a waste money. I do have tons of tech around my house and gaming consoles, so even though I never really use the heating, my electric bill is high. My big oled tv also seems to guzzle a lot.
. very good video . i like to live below my means . but don't buy bottled water it's like buying plastic . i hate running water too . it drives me nuts .
I work as a customer service advisor for an energy company and the prices per unit has gone up, but so has people's energy use too! It is unusual to see an account that is using less energy than the year before. So it's like a double whammy with the bill.
3:10 In the winter, I run the water until it gets to the hot ones, but I do collect those in a bucket for a... lightweight (no.1) flush. 9:25 Reusable bottle of water, always. I go about in several fixed places, so I mentally point out where refills & toilets spots are. 12:00 Get nosey 💯 People feel smart & it complements *them* if they get to teach someone a functional trick.
Side note: Don't do budget billing. My brothers SMUD bill was $300 a month for about 5 years... When he bought his house and moved, he ended up owning $3,700. All of the energy that he didn't pay for up front hit him at the end. He thought this budget billing was a discount... It's not. It's just a way to budget your bills. You still owe that money. Also, since his bill was that set $300 for so long, he ran everything all the time. Lights were always on. He had a portable AC that he used all of the time. This may be obvious to some people, but it's not to everyone.
That ghost energy is a REAL thing. If an appliance, device, kitchen thing, computer, or screen has a light or digitsl clock didplsy when "off" it is likely using ghost energy. A quick way to do a ghost energy audit is to turn all the lights off and look for anything that has a light on it. Screens, screens, screens be it a 52" tv, computer monitor, game system, or other can be high energy users when "off". Some can be damaged if thier ghost energy is turned off. We use surge suppressor power strips for a variety of reasins on most of the things that plug into the wall. We have electricsl items grouped into each surge supressor so that when the surgecdupressor is turned off, it makes sense to have all the items plugged into that surge suppressor turn off at the same time. Getting the ideal configuration usually doesnt happen over night. Aided by computer chip destroying power outages and whst i believe to be dirty power, most of our appliances no longer have a display clock when "off" . When something dies and needs replacement, to replace or not to replsce becomes a much easier decision. We were drifting toward "upgrading" somecitems to eliminate some ofvtge power strip considerations; usuallybtgese itemsxare considered lesser and as suchnare onnthecless expensive side.
I LIKE my full force, HOT shower of a duration that drains the tank. We have an older water saver shower head with a dial on its end. We played with the dial settings and are NOT on the lowest dial setting because the seeminly mist wasnt washing sampoo out of my hair; diy and work grime plus soap in a timely manner for the other half. The other half is a veteran and must have have built some life long, 3 minute military shower habits as he usually takes cooler, relatively short showers. IF he takes a longer and/ or hotter shower hes working out muscle aches, orthopedic aches, or hes sick; these i dont worry abiutnin terms of power and water as theyre cheaper than running a hot tub. For myself, i trade less water out the shower head for a longer time in the shower by reducing the amount of water at the knob; imput up with the squeel. I also turn the temperature down from what I prefer; sometimes ill raise the temperature for 30 seconds of muscle, spine, and mind set delight. Every so often, ill take a shorter, hotter shower with full force water (-as it comes out our shower head) and exit lobster red; i used to leave lobster red pretty much every time.
I have a book it save ¢3 off every dollar u earn After getting started raising it to ¢15 off every dollar then u have it done my best friend showed me how he saved $3500/a month for 25 yrs !yes go figure that one out .I did like I said if u see some one doing it right ask them to share!
Your house was about to be like boys to men. Water runs dry. Lol Watch your electric meter every hour. I'm aware that my total home use is 1kw/hour. Also leaving on one led bulb does not change the number. Maybe if it were broken down smaller. I also know that each electric heater is 1kw/hour. Each. When running for the full 60 minutes. My electric heaters go for like 10 minutes and kick off. So we'll even give credit and say they use half a kw hour. Our electric company is purposely lying on the invoice. Their calculation for sewer is based upon the existing water that travels through the sewer meter. There isn't even a sewer meter. LOLOLOL. When I tell youy personal frugal living no lights on home has a monthly bill of 250$ per month. I wasn't home for a month and still used 86$ worth of electric water and sewer. It literally only used refrigerator and deep freezer. Not even heaters or running water and the bill was still 86$! No one was living there. Needless to say. Poplar Bluff MO MUNICIPAL UTILITIES is purposely lying and charging this way to their residence. Maybe we should call media. State. Or federal government. They even charge$ 25 per month bc the company didn't buy enough electricity so all residents must pay their monthly inventory cost. If anyone knows a department to contact for readings and observation. Please do. It's the municipal court system thru the city of poplar bluff mo. Which makes it even worse. It's joined with the MU court.
yellow-Get Low-you are so right we do our indiv. water bt., bc yikes $3+ per drink water btl. quick stop each-NO-every single time you go out-NOPE-keep some in refg. and bring with you each outing
WISHING YOU THE BEST WEEKEND! Which tip from this video might you try or start doing again?
I live in northern California and just don't like wasting water since we often have drought! When I turn my shower on it takes a little bit to get warm, so I keep a small bucket in the tub to capture the cold water. I use it to water plants.
I do the same. Also use it to flush.
LOVE THIS! Thank you! And I'm always so happy to see you on Fridays!!! YAY! Have an awesome weekend!

Pur water is very expensive. We made an investment purchase of a DIY roof water collection system.
I wasn't raised to be conservative. I learned it on my own. I take short showers by choice. I hate paying for unnecessary lights being left on.

Good morning Martha!
. very good video . i like to live below my means . but don't buy bottled water it's like buying plastic . i hate running water too . it drives me nuts .
Thanks for being here! Have a great weekend!
One of my sons thinks the hot water in the shower is his steam room. He lets it run and run. Geesh!
Love this channel.lol.😅
I work as a customer service advisor for an energy company and the prices per unit has gone up, but so has people's energy use too! It is unusual to see an account that is using less energy than the year before. So it's like a double whammy with the bill.
Thank you so much for sharing Alicia!!!
Get Low!! Kate...!! 😊😊😊😅😅😅
HAPPY FRIDAY!!!!

My husband unplus everything before bed😂😂....he said it saves...

How low can we go!! :D
YASSSS!
YASSS!

Hi Barbara!
Your house was about to be like boys to men. Water runs dry. Lol
Watch your electric meter every hour.
HAHAHAHAHAH! That was the first concert I ever saw! (Boys to Men!)
