A friend of mine was a deep-sea welder. He told me that whilst working he would often hear the sound of fishing gear being dragged along the seabed even though the trawlers were miles away. I always found that spooky. I share this with you because I thought you might like to know that we already cause a lot of noise pollution under the oceans surface.
@@lukeellis758 Thats just a silly comparison. The oceans are vast and whales have exceptional hearing underwater. Its not like the cargo ships appear out of nowhere with blazing fast speeds, they both have about equal top speeds. Also from one study : ''The whales were affected up to 3km away, at sound levels over 140 dB, and deviated from their path by about 500m''. I found out container ships make up to 198 dB, so im not sure why these whales dont deviate. 🤔
@@TheRed4123 The difference is information. even the most intelligent of humans can make grave mistakes out of ignorance. just because you have the mental capacity to learn doesn't mean you automatically know everything. A person raised all their life in a basement or something wouldn't automatically know the dangers of vehicles, or say electricity, a curious mind might just decide to stick a fork in an outlet. They wouldn't be stupid for doing it unless they had reason to believe it was dangerous. As for a whale, may have spent it's entire life being the biggest baddest mofo in the ocean, that NOTHING fucks with, can go wherever whenever. and comes across a cruise ship for the first time. It already has bad eye sight and propellers spin so fast you don't see them and YOU only know it's there because YOU know it's there, the Whale can feel like it dodged the ship and swam through the propeller blades it never saw, and never knew existed. If it survived that encounter, chances are it never does it again, because then and only then would it have had reason to know and learn about it's danger. Most cases there isn't a 2nd time, only a 1st.
To me the biggest problem is: There is no data (at least not shown here). "Experts say..." based on what? If there is no way to know there is also no way to quantify if countermeasures work. Speed limits, stopping over night, detours,... all of that is very expensive. You can't order that based on less than solid data. "Whales have bad vision" But they hear the ships from far away, they are loud and unnatural. And in addition they have ultrasonic. It might be that big whales don't avoid ships because they nomally don't have anything to fear in the ocean. But a lack of awareness of the ship is very unlikely.
I think they have data, but very limited because they told in video, it's hard to collect exact data for further research, even to count how many whales that dies because of ships they cannot get the exact number. This is a very complicated problem, But if we act only when we get all data , maybe it's too late to save whales.

If I was a whale expert .I would fit a few ships with cameras focus on the hull and prop to record for a year or period of time to collect data to calculate the risk ..Before running off on a report as a expert...

I was aboard a US Naval vessel long ago (early 70’s) transiting off the California coast. We unfortunately collided with a large whale (almost certainly a Blue), striking it in the head and killing it. This happened during broad daylight, with a person standing watch forward on the Forecastle, as well on the Bridge Wings. We were running at a speed of 15 Knots (I know as I was a Quartermaster and on the Bridge when this happened). My point? Seeing objects laying on the surface, but not protruding a significant distance above the sea are essentially invisible. Unless the water is “glass calm” locating floating items is extremely challenging, even whales. I have spent years at sea and for those reading this that have done the same know this is true. The solution will need to involve something more reliable than human sight, or trusting that the whale will become aware of the ship in time to react. It seems to me that the most reasonable solution would to implement what was done in Panama - precise transit lanes and speed limits. The idea that ships will “heave to” and just coast at night while in the open sea is ludicrous, as is the idea of a speed limit under twenty knots for container ships and oilers. Ain’t gonna happen. Finally, may I suggest that the advocates of these measures try and not sound like the “climate change” groups. Regardless of good intentions, if one uses unsubstantiated data in a potentially inflammatory manner, you had better be correct. In my lifetime I have been warned of an impending ice age, then global warming which will eliminate thousands of miles of coast land, to now being told climate change is is being caused by racists. If a person cares about what happens to the whales (and I very much do), we should do our best to use reasonable, reliable data, and not use alarmist tactics. Credibility is at stake here, and the whales need our help. Stop the unverifiable statements. Saying one guarantees something with no factual evidence is not only foolish behavior but causes serious damage to the cause one is fighting for.

The fact that they help fight climate change by absorbing much more CO2 than trees and their excretion helps phytoplankton take nutrients, and the phytoplankton photosynthesis to produce oxygen are one of the main reason these species should be given importance. We need to do something for the ships to not come in their way. Now I'm not a ship expert so I'm not sure if this is already available but.. wouldn't an extremely luminous source which is waterproof,placed at the bottom of ships, be useful so thta the crill stays at the bottom?
The CO2 absorption idea is subject to much doubt and still requires a lot of verification. The number of whale deaths is also subject to debate. A whale is only slightly denser than the water around it. Given some of those big ships can run down smaller boats and not even know, what chance to know you hit a whale?
Update (31.01.22): The Mediterranean shipping company (MSC) is the first major shipping line to re-route their ships on the west coast of Greece to reduce the risk of collision with endangered sperm whales in the Mediterranean. After discussions with four major environmental NGOs, the company decided to take swift action and re-route all of their container vessels in this area to safeguard the critical habitat for the subpopulation of whales. Critical action like this is urgently needed in order to protect the remaining 200 to 300 individuals that remain. #goodnews

Whales sink to the ocean floor some times where humans can reach some where they can't reach. And most whale carcasses are eaten by sharks and other sea animals, their bones are as easy to see as a full carcass
First time I heard of this problem was during a vacation on Canary Islands a few years ago. The blame there goes to the high speed ferries that circulate between the individual islands.
Maybe human can try study and develop one device to send some "irritant sounds" in front the boats (like warning) to try to get off of the way the wales. wales are so sensitive to sounds.

We still have a lot to learn about our own earth, marine biologist are working everyday to find out as much as possible, but because the ocean is so vast and deep its not as easy as work on land. So of course there are going to be estimates.

Back in the early 1980s a ship came in to Narragansett Bay Rhode Island with a blue whale calf draped over the bulbous bow dead. Because they are so rare the skeleton was salvaged and it now hangs from the ceiling of the New Bedford whaling museum. At least this one was put to use but it shows how deadly large vessels are to whales... I think the second photo is actually the whale I am talking about. It's a long time ago but I believe that's the picture that was in the newspaper
This is were marine research could play a vital role. Understanding how the whales communicate with each other, as well as recognizing signals e.g. vibration, sonar that signify as an incoming danger to them could be useful. Such device could be mounted or installed in the ship bow and activate in areas known as their routes, fishing ground, etc.

This will help to keep whales away from ships and may decrease the number of death. In India, to save elephant from hitting by train, an instrument which create sound like bees has been installed at every 200 meter near railway line. This has decrease the number of death of elephant. Where another initiative is that speed of train has been decrease from 50 kmph to 30 kmph at those area were this instrument cannot be installed.

It's one of the solutions mentioned as a solution in our video. 👍 There are two main problems, regarding the sound warning system: 1) Whales don't understand the sounds from a ship as a warning sign. They haven't learned that ships are a threat. 🚢🤷🏽♀️ 2) Whales are typically feeding in areas that are not flat on the bottom. The problem: ships are also moving in the same areas - in two different directions! So now the sound which should warn a whale is coming from one side of the whale, and it’s coming from the other side of the whale, and those sounds are bouncing off the canyons and the mountains in the oceans. ↪️🔊↩️
I imagine that seems good in theory, but sound travels much further in water than air. The seas used to be so quiet that whales could communicate more or less from one end of an ocean to the other. Now it's filled with the noise of tens of thousands of large ship propellers, paricuarly around ports. It would be like you spending all life in some factory filled with a deafening racket 24/7. Hundreds of those sources of noise would be approaching or travelling away from you at any given time, and I imagine that deducing that one of those sources are heading straight towards you is near impossible. Adding another noise to that racket, particuarly one designed to be annoying, isn't going to help anyone.
Yeah, not to be the kill joy here, but India didn't do this to prevent the deaths of elephants, they did it to stop derailings and peoples lives and money being lost. With ships there is no economic incentive to change, so nothing will change. Sad reality of life that unless you're being financially disadvantaged, no action will be taken (e.g. climate change). I hate it but don't get your hopes up.
*For those of you suggesting, or thinking sound could be an effective away to keep whales or other marine mammals away, here's some short information as to why it won't work:* Marine mammals, such as whales and other species alike, are heavily affected by underwater noise, known as anthropogenic sounds. They cause disturbance(s) which interfer with their natural sounds, as their main source of communication is through sound, e.g. singing, mating calls etc., thus it would not work at all, and just make matters a whole lot worse.
What about a tracker network that tracks groups of whales so we can know their depth and trajectories, it could be a public access information network that allows cargo ships to know if they are going to run into a group of whales surfacing to take air, specially for those areas where you can't really separate the shipping from the whale routes.
As horrible as these whale strikes are, there is a silver lining. Road kills use to be much more common in north America but something happened that cut these numbers down drastically. What happened? the animals adapted, they don't cross roads the same way they once did. They now go at specific times/ areas to cross and now look for headlights (aka evolution happened). Hopefully a similar kind of evolutional adaptation is happening with whales but in regards to ship traffic

I think the best solution might be to use some type of whale horn as a ship passes by a busy shipping lane where whales may be present. A specific frequency that most whales find incredibly uncomfortable that makes them want to swim away from it. This sound could be left on until the ship has reach wide open water. Maybe some researchers are already thinking about this? Since whales communicate so well using sound, it doesn't seem very far fetched to me.

Isn't it possible to create some kind of whale friendly bumper on ships? A device that nudges the whales to the side? Modern cars have all kinds of collision sensors, I am sure this technology can be used on ships as well.
Sadly it isn't that easy in reality. The whales would still get hurt (cuts, broken bones, organ damage...) if the fast ships collide with their bodies. But you're right, we need to find a (technological) solution to avoid this ship strikes.

Money is no incentive to commit crimes of mass destruction, or to aid in these crimes. (These actions are crimes even if they are not ruled as so in the courts because of their inherent nature of destruction!) Merchant Marine here. The biggest likelihood of you hitting a whale is in shallower waters where they tend to nest. We move slow to give them time to move around the ship. Whales are not dumb, they have operant conditioning just like other species. Some of them know to avoid larger ships and others know that they can use small vessels to scrape off barnacles. Blasting frequencies will not work for a language that we barely understand ourselves. The best thing is to mitigate Sound from the ship buy uses of void spaces and to have them be accustomed to what a ship sounds like.
Lets help save the whales by reducing ship strikes and stop fishing entanglement because whales play as an important role to our oceans because the stop marine life from overpopulating and there beautiful creatures!! #savetheWhales

Shipping Companies are getting incentives on their Dry Docking fee when they follow the Voluntary Speed Reduction . Ive personally been to Los Angeles, and Oakland, The NOAA has established the Santa Barbara Traffic Searation Scheme and San Fransisco Traffic Separation Scheme and strongly recommends ships to navigate with speed less than 10 Knots. According to researches it has been found out that speed less than 10 Knots are not Lethal for them too. I still remember how we used to use the Helm and alter ore than 50 degrees when in the Santa Barbara TSS when we used to sight any whale. you could feel the pressure of navigating there.
I would like to know where all of your sources are from - wish you'd post em in description. You refute that number of 1,200 from 2007-2016, would like to know where the evidence is to support the claim that it's more like 10,000+. Furthermore, that range is from 1,200 to 20,000. That shows how inaccurate the data might be, I would like to know the method of collection and how we arrived at those numbers. Also, given the obvious difficulty in tracking the number of collisions, how can we be sure that the traffic action taken in the gulf has resulted in a significant decrease in deaths? Would like to see that study too. I'm all about helping whales out, but I'm also a big believer in natural selection. As you said, these whales have been around for a long time and have evolved. What is the CEO's rationale that whales won't eventually adapt to the sound of motorized propellers? I would think that some whales have already determined that the sound means "get away" and have acted accordingly. Others, maybe not so much, and they're probably dead now unfortunately. But that's nature and that's life.

Whales use echo location to track food and communicate. Surely a frequency can be found to scare off whales. This may be different frequencies for different whales, but general routes of whales are known. Mega ships can broadcast warnings for different whales on different migratory routes.

It's actually sort of a dilemma, as ship bows are designed to minimize pressure waves propagated forward to minimize drag, but doing so removes any audible indication for whales ahead. It'l be hard to find a feasible solution as such

@@emorynguyen1583: Dissipation over distance. Doesn’t have to be really loud as long as the whale moves out of the way. They maneuver a lot faster than a cargo ship or tanker can. Otherwise every ship would have to be fitted for sonar, that would make the background noises even worse.
None of this stands up to scrutiny. The video concludes that whale strikes happen because whale bodies don't float and a strike could go unrecorded. Then goes on to say ''experts estimate'' it could be 2k or 3k or 5k or 10k without cross referencing whale populations or anywhere else where those numbers would show up. Then goes on to say traffic mitigation ''reduced potential for ship strikes'' uncited and that ''a report'' showed that such mitigation measures may have resulted in 90% drop in ship strikes. If the existence of the problem itself is so sketchy, then shouldn't that be established first before trying to sell some ingenious solution?
Countries would be happy with the traffic separation scheme..... since it's win win situation... Gov get more tax for route guidance, Ships is safer from accidents, and whales are protected..... But the day night scheme and speed limit, doubt it would be implemented

Whales are really important for marine ecosystems. If their population decreases then the phytoplankton "food of ocean creatures" also decreases which will increase carbon content in ocean water making it unsuitable for marine life.😟
whale populations hurt WAY WAY WAY more from whaling industry (hunting) than boat collisions. this is a very minor issue. stopping hunting is more than enough to recover whale populations. this probably is akin to birds flying into buildings and dying. this is almost a non issue. whaling is the main problem, fix that, and whales are fine.

There exists no perfect solution yet, but reducing the speed limit to 10 knots and stop container ships during night are two really good options which could help the whales.

Glad you asked! 🤓 The two lobes are called "fluke". There is a notch, a v-shaped indentation where the flukes (or lobes) of a whale's tail meet. Flukes move up and down to propel the whale through the water. Side fact: fish tails move left and right.
I am a ship navigator and it's nearly impossible to see a whale at day time let alone night time. The Traffic Separation Scheme is not to protect the whales but to manage dense traffic better. Big corporations would never ever let a ship stop at night, it would mean losing millions of dollars. I had no idea so many whales died of this, it makes me sick to think of how many I would have hit accidentally :( We, humans need better solutions, we're killing them all slowly.
We have to observe whale sounds and amplify those types of ultrasound waves from ships so that whales understand that there is danger ahead and can defend themselves.

I think, first the researchers have to find out how others species like killer whale and great white respond to the similar situation, so it gives us some idea about how these creatures respond to these situations and secondly the researchers should also find out some methods to scare away those giant creatures from a far distance..so they can move away from the ship's path..
Whales being struck by smaller boats seems to be more rare? When I worked doing whale watches I Was always taught to keep the motors running so the whale could here your boat and not come close to it or breach on top of it. Seems like those big container vessels would be hard to hear because the motors are hundreds of meters back at the aft of the vessel near the props... Maybe it might be worth it to put some noisy engine like the generator up at the bow draft. inside the hull... give a noisy point near the front for the whales to hear and give them a chance to dive and get out of the way since the boat can't maneuver quick enough.
I never thought of that. Maybe whales can't hear the sounds of ships because as a general rule, large container ships and tankers operate at lower RPMs than small recreational boats. In my state, the entire area from 10 to 25 miles out is a federal whale migration zone from November through April. As such, all vessels 65 feet or longer have to reduce speed to a maximum of 10 knots.

As for a whale, may have spent it's entire life being the biggest baddest mofo in the ocean, that NOTHING fucks with, can go wherever whenever. and comes across a cruise ship for the first time. It already has bad eye sight and propellers spin so fast you don't see them and YOU only know it's there because YOU know it's there, the Whale can feel like it dodged the ship and swam through the propeller blades it never saw, and never knew existed.
If it survived that encounter, chances are it never does it again, because then and only then would it have had reason to know and learn about it's danger. Most cases there isn't a 2nd time, only a 1st.

To me the biggest problem is: There is no data (at least not shown here).
"Experts say..." based on what? If there is no way to know there is also no way to quantify if countermeasures work. Speed limits, stopping over night, detours,... all of that is very expensive. You can't order that based on less than solid data.
"Whales have bad vision" But they hear the ships from far away, they are loud and unnatural. And in addition they have ultrasonic. It might be that big whales don't avoid ships because they nomally don't have anything to fear in the ocean. But a lack of awareness of the ship is very unlikely.
I think they have data, but very limited because they told in video, it's hard to collect exact data for further research, even to count how many whales that dies because of ships they cannot get the exact number. This is a very complicated problem, But if we act only when we get all data , maybe it's too late to save whales.

I was aboard a US Naval vessel long ago (early 70’s) transiting off the California coast. We unfortunately collided with a large whale (almost certainly a Blue), striking it in the head and killing it. This happened during broad daylight, with a person standing watch forward on the Forecastle, as well on the Bridge Wings. We were running at a speed of 15 Knots (I know as I was a Quartermaster and on the Bridge when this happened). My point? Seeing objects laying on the surface, but not protruding a significant distance above the sea are essentially invisible. Unless the water is “glass calm” locating floating items is extremely challenging, even whales. I have spent years at sea and for those reading this that have done the same know this is true. The solution will need to involve something more reliable than human sight, or trusting that the whale will become aware of the ship in time to react. It seems to me that the most reasonable solution would to implement what was done in Panama - precise transit lanes and speed limits. The idea that ships will “heave to” and just coast at night while in the open sea is ludicrous, as is the idea of a speed limit under twenty knots for container ships and oilers. Ain’t gonna happen. Finally, may I suggest that the advocates of these measures try and not sound like the “climate change” groups. Regardless of good intentions, if one uses unsubstantiated data in a potentially inflammatory manner, you had better be correct. In my lifetime I have been warned of an impending ice age, then global warming which will eliminate thousands of miles of coast land, to now being told climate change is is being caused by racists. If a person cares about what happens to the whales (and I very much do), we should do our best to use reasonable, reliable data, and not use alarmist tactics. Credibility is at stake here, and the whales need our help. Stop the unverifiable statements. Saying one guarantees something with no factual evidence is not only foolish behavior but causes serious damage to the cause one is fighting for.

The fact that they help fight climate change by absorbing much more CO2 than trees and their excretion helps phytoplankton take nutrients, and the phytoplankton photosynthesis to produce oxygen are one of the main reason these species should be given importance. We need to do something for the ships to not come in their way. Now I'm not a ship expert so I'm not sure if this is already available but.. wouldn't an extremely luminous source which is waterproof,placed at the bottom of ships, be useful so thta the crill stays at the bottom?
The CO2 absorption idea is subject to much doubt and still requires a lot of verification. The number of whale deaths is also subject to debate. A whale is only slightly denser than the water around it. Given some of those big ships can run down smaller boats and not even know, what chance to know you hit a whale?

Back in the early 1980s a ship came in to Narragansett Bay Rhode Island with a blue whale calf draped over the bulbous bow dead. Because they are so rare the skeleton was salvaged and it now hangs from the ceiling of the New Bedford whaling museum. At least this one was put to use but it shows how deadly large vessels are to whales... I think the second photo is actually the whale I am talking about. It's a long time ago but I believe that's the picture that was in the newspaper

This is were marine research could play a vital role. Understanding how the whales communicate with each other, as well as recognizing signals e.g. vibration, sonar that signify as an incoming danger to them could be useful. Such device could be mounted or installed in the ship bow and activate in areas known as their routes, fishing ground, etc.

I would like to suggest that a device must be developed like sound which irritate whales.
This will help to keep whales away from ships and may decrease the number of death.
In India, to save elephant from hitting by train, an instrument which create sound like bees has been installed at every 200 meter near railway line. This has decrease the number of death of elephant. Where another initiative is that speed of train has been decrease from 50 kmph to 30 kmph at those area were this instrument cannot be installed.

There are two main problems, regarding the sound warning system:
1) Whales don't understand the sounds from a ship as a warning sign. They haven't learned that ships are a threat. 🚢🤷🏽♀️
2) Whales are typically feeding in areas that are not flat on the bottom.
The problem: ships are also moving in the same areas - in two different directions! So now the sound which should warn a whale is coming from one side of the whale, and it’s coming from the other side of the whale, and those sounds are bouncing off the canyons and the mountains in the oceans. ↪️🔊↩️
Say what you want about India, but that's something the rest of the world could learn from. That's awesome mate.
I imagine that seems good in theory, but sound travels much further in water than air. The seas used to be so quiet that whales could communicate more or less from one end of an ocean to the other. Now it's filled with the noise of tens of thousands of large ship propellers, paricuarly around ports. It would be like you spending all life in some factory filled with a deafening racket 24/7. Hundreds of those sources of noise would be approaching or travelling away from you at any given time, and I imagine that deducing that one of those sources are heading straight towards you is near impossible.
Adding another noise to that racket, particuarly one designed to be annoying, isn't going to help anyone.
Yeah, not to be the kill joy here, but India didn't do this to prevent the deaths of elephants, they did it to stop derailings and peoples lives and money being lost. With ships there is no economic incentive to change, so nothing will change. Sad reality of life that unless you're being financially disadvantaged, no action will be taken (e.g. climate change). I hate it but don't get your hopes up.

*For those of you suggesting, or thinking sound could be an effective away to keep whales or other marine mammals away, here's some short information as to why it won't work:* Marine mammals, such as whales and other species alike, are heavily affected by underwater noise, known as anthropogenic sounds. They cause disturbance(s) which interfer with their natural sounds, as their main source of communication is through sound, e.g. singing, mating calls etc., thus it would not work at all, and just make matters a whole lot worse.
What about a tracker network that tracks groups of whales so we can know their depth and trajectories, it could be a public access information network that allows cargo ships to know if they are going to run into a group of whales surfacing to take air, specially for those areas where you can't really separate the shipping from the whale routes.
As horrible as these whale strikes are, there is a silver lining. Road kills use to be much more common in north America but something happened that cut these numbers down drastically. What happened? the animals adapted, they don't cross roads the same way they once did. They now go at specific times/ areas to cross and now look for headlights (aka evolution happened). Hopefully a similar kind of evolutional adaptation is happening with whales but in regards to ship traffic

I think the best solution might be to use some type of whale horn as a ship passes by a busy shipping lane where whales may be present. A specific frequency that most whales find incredibly uncomfortable that makes them want to swim away from it. This sound could be left on until the ship has reach wide open water. Maybe some researchers are already thinking about this? Since whales communicate so well using sound, it doesn't seem very far fetched to me.

The whales would still get hurt (cuts, broken bones, organ damage...) if the fast ships collide with their bodies.

Merchant Marine here. The biggest likelihood of you hitting a whale is in shallower waters where they tend to nest. We move slow to give them time to move around the ship.
Whales are not dumb, they have operant conditioning just like other species. Some of them know to avoid larger ships and others know that they can use small vessels to scrape off barnacles. Blasting frequencies will not work for a language that we barely understand ourselves. The best thing is to mitigate Sound from the ship buy uses of void spaces and to have them be accustomed to what a ship sounds like.
I wonder if they could send a sonar pulse loud and annoying enough to drive a whale away from the ships path. Something that does not harm them.

I ate both salt water and fresh fish. Fresh water fish has "sweet taste", especially chinese catfish. There is no reason to depravate whales, sharks and seals from their main source of food.
Why not have the ships transmit the sound of a pod of killer whales.

I'm sure there is some type of high frequency transmitter that could be put on the front of a ship that would deter whales.
Shipping Companies are getting incentives on their Dry Docking fee when they follow the Voluntary Speed Reduction . Ive personally been to Los Angeles, and Oakland, The NOAA has established the Santa Barbara Traffic Searation Scheme and San Fransisco Traffic Separation Scheme and strongly recommends ships to navigate with speed less than 10 Knots. According to researches it has been found out that speed less than 10 Knots are not Lethal for them too.
I still remember how we used to use the Helm and alter ore than 50 degrees when in the Santa Barbara TSS when we used to sight any whale. you could feel the pressure of navigating there.

I would like to know where all of your sources are from - wish you'd post em in description. You refute that number of 1,200 from 2007-2016, would like to know where the evidence is to support the claim that it's more like 10,000+. Furthermore, that range is from 1,200 to 20,000. That shows how inaccurate the data might be, I would like to know the method of collection and how we arrived at those numbers.
Also, given the obvious difficulty in tracking the number of collisions, how can we be sure that the traffic action taken in the gulf has resulted in a significant decrease in deaths? Would like to see that study too.
I'm all about helping whales out, but I'm also a big believer in natural selection. As you said, these whales have been around for a long time and have evolved. What is the CEO's rationale that whales won't eventually adapt to the sound of motorized propellers? I would think that some whales have already determined that the sound means "get away" and have acted accordingly. Others, maybe not so much, and they're probably dead now unfortunately. But that's nature and that's life.

Whales use echo location to track food and communicate. Surely a frequency can be found to scare off whales. This may be different frequencies for different whales, but general routes of whales are known. Mega ships can broadcast warnings for different whales on different migratory routes.

It's actually sort of a dilemma, as ship bows are designed to minimize pressure waves propagated forward to minimize drag, but doing so removes any audible indication for whales ahead. It'l be hard to find a feasible solution as such
There should be research about the voice that will send warning message to whales and it should be used at the frequency that whales can hear

Figure out how to make a deer whistle for whales, something that produces sound that they don’t like so they stay away from the ships. You can’t steer a small city around an animal that changes course at the drop of a hat. That’s like having airliners veer off course to dodge a sparrow. Stupid.

@@emorynguyen1583: Dissipation over distance. Doesn’t have to be really loud as long as the whale moves out of the way. They maneuver a lot faster than a cargo ship or tanker can. Otherwise every ship would have to be fitted for sonar, that would make the background noises even worse.

Then goes on to say ''experts estimate'' it could be 2k or 3k or 5k or 10k without cross referencing whale populations or anywhere else where those numbers would show up. Then goes on to say traffic mitigation ''reduced potential for ship strikes'' uncited and that ''a report'' showed that such mitigation measures may have resulted in 90% drop in ship strikes. If the existence of the problem itself is so sketchy, then shouldn't that be established first before trying to sell some ingenious solution?
Maybe we can use sonar to detect then several meters away and could put some light or sound which they dislike.
Countries would be happy with the traffic separation scheme..... since it's win win situation... Gov get more tax for route guidance, Ships is safer from accidents, and whales are protected.....

whale populations hurt WAY WAY WAY more from whaling industry (hunting) than boat collisions. this is a very minor issue. stopping hunting is more than enough to recover whale populations.

There exists no perfect solution yet, but reducing the speed limit to 10 knots and stop container ships during night are two really good options which could help the whales.

The two lobes are called "fluke". There is a notch, a v-shaped indentation where the flukes (or lobes) of a whale's tail meet. Flukes move up and down to propel the whale through the water.

I am a ship navigator and it's nearly impossible to see a whale at day time let alone night time. The Traffic Separation Scheme is not to protect the whales but to manage dense traffic better. Big corporations would never ever let a ship stop at night, it would mean losing millions of dollars. I had no idea so many whales died of this, it makes me sick to think of how many I would have hit accidentally :( We, humans need better solutions, we're killing them all slowly.
We have to observe whale sounds and amplify those types of ultrasound waves from ships so that whales understand that there is danger ahead and can defend themselves.

I think, first the researchers have to find out how others species like killer whale and great white respond to the similar situation, so it gives us some idea about how these creatures respond to these situations and secondly the researchers should also find out some methods to scare away those giant creatures from a far distance..so they can move away from the ship's path..
Whales being struck by smaller boats seems to be more rare?
When I worked doing whale watches I Was always taught to keep the motors running so the whale could here your boat and not come close to it or breach on top of it.
Seems like those big container vessels would be hard to hear because the motors are hundreds of meters back at the aft of the vessel near the props... Maybe it might be worth it to put some noisy engine like the generator up at the bow draft. inside the hull... give a noisy point near the front for the whales to hear and give them a chance to dive and get out of the way since the boat can't maneuver quick enough.
I never thought of that. Maybe whales can't hear the sounds of ships because as a general rule, large container ships and tankers operate at lower RPMs than small recreational boats. In my state, the entire area from 10 to 25 miles out is a federal whale migration zone from November through April. As such, all vessels 65 feet or longer have to reduce speed to a maximum of 10 knots.
