  • ↠ Want to know why thousands of whales die every year? • Why Thousands of Whale...
Jacques Costeau might have called the ocean silent, but sound is essential to many marine animals’ survival. The ocean is a naturally noisy place, so what happens when human-made sounds interfere with those that should be there? We explore the growing problem of underwater sound pollution, which is caused by human activities like drilling, shipping, sonar and seismic exploration. It has far-reaching consequences for marine life (like dolphin sounds) - but can anything be done to curb it?

2:20] "The result is a highly complex soundscape." Cool, got it, I'm on board. So, for me this is the third in a series of comments on this channel which is a declension from a video about how sperm whales suddenly learned to evade 19th century whalers to "Why Thousands of Whales Die Every Year" do to ship strikes to this video "Why Whales *Cannot* Learn to Avoid Ship Strikes." I'm not against cetaceans, nor am I against this channel, what I am against is stupid understandings of the problem. Maybe in the 18th and 19th centuries the acoustic environment of the oceans and the intelligence of cetaceans were matched equally enough that sperm whales could effectively compete with humans - but no longer. That changes the relationship of humans to cetacean from that of near peers to that of pets. So, humanity's attitude to the problem needs to be understood in that degree of relationship.
In the last half century, most people have agreed that hunting and killing cetaceans as a source of food and fuel is bad and have agreed internationally to out law the practice - with a few traditionalist exceptions. That's good, right? But it appears that more needs to be done. Fine. Let's do it
In my opinion it will be realized that human population *actually peaked* in 2022 at about 8 billion souls and not 2060 with 12-16 billion souls. So, what I am saying is that the worst of that problem may actually be behind us. The golden age of globalization is coming to an end - or is already over - the oceans are likely to get a little quieter. If we decide, improved ship and propeller design and some active mitigation technologies we can do much much better. Fine. Let's do it. The shipping industry has learned to treat the discharge of their sewage and ballast water? they can learn to do this. It will take a little while, there will be a cost. Fine. The whales are not going to save themselves, but how many poor people are you willing to sacrifice to save the whales? Just bear in mind the people you sacrifice to save the whales are likely to be poor people of dark skin color far away. Can you live with that?

That's what life is about. We can do better, obviously, but saving the "planet" is to our benefit as everything is, just not the fist item on the list at the moment. The "planet" doesn't gives a fuck. Aaaaaand we are part of the environment just as much as everything else.
