Amazing Tips! Especially on the clouds and mountains which I've been having a lot of trouble with. Could you please show your cleaning set up as you paint? And also what techniques you use for a swift cleanup? Question: Lots of brushes? Or lots of paint thinner? As I'm painting I am constantly having to keep cleaning my brush, especially between switching between dark and light colours, also keeping my blending brush clean is quite a chore. How many brushes of the same type would you recommend, and which ones are better suited to paining a typical mountainous bob ross?

I found this absolutely helpful! However, I faced a little problem after watching bob ross's tutorials followed by your channel... When I started painting my dark greens used for distance trees in between mountains and a lake, the green started to mix with the colors on the canvas, so instead of it being murky green, it faded into the canvas??? I don't even know if that's the proper term, I'm a total noob! But still, I'm really glad of how my painting kind of turned out thanks to your in-depth tutorials!
Thanks, Its not easy ( I still struggle with a lot of parts too) Its just sticking with it, having fun and above all consistent practice 💪 But thanks for the kind words 😃
Is there a way you can make acrylics work for this style? I have a ton I don’t want to go to waste (I bought acrylic not knowing the difference between what bob ross uses and what I’ve used in the past) I’ve seen people use some kind of thinner but not sure what kind or if it will even work.
There are mediums you can buy that will keep the acrylic wet for longer. But that means you would have to buy more supplies. You can always use a little bit of water and work in smaller sections as you paint and that will work too.
Alright Ryan, that's it. I've been sick for almost 3 weeks, and I have a pile of commissions looking at me, and I just really need to do thing fun. I will take this Challege right now and tag you on IG if it doesn't turn out awful. Send me good juju, I'm going in!
How about a video of a how to add the paint to the palette itself and how much to add...My first painting I thought I had plenty of certain colors, but I didn't, and I ended up with a mud bath on the palette as well. Maybe also if there is leftover clean paint, what to do so as to not waste....
Hey thanks for the feedback. I have another channel where I am putting my art. Check there I may add a video for that purpose. ua-cam.com/channels/J0nGU-oZthfagTyVVXiVQA.html
thank you so much for sharing, i would like to know about you big brush??? what are the bristle made of. i would hing using the wrong brush could leave trikes on the canvas. Thank you

Hi, Thank you for making this video. i have a question, can i apply the liquid white straight away with no gesso added or do i have to add gesso to my canvas, Thanks.
Most canvases you buy already have a basic coat or two of gesso. So you can just apply Liquid White directly. But just to let you know the cheaper the canvas, the quicker it could absorb your Liquid White. I hope that helps. If you need any more tips, I am launching a new art channel this wee. You can Sub here ( ua-cam.com/channels/J0nGU-oZthfagTyVVXiVQA.html ) Happy Painting :)
Hi! I have a problem with my panting, after i have painted the sky i want to add clouds. But when i add white paint to the canvas, my paint brush which is filled with white color, starts picking up the blue color that is already on the canvas. So all the white color just sort of dissapears in the blue... I have applyed tripple gesso, Liqiud white like you have. And i am pretty sure i didnt use that much blue, i have even went over the sky with a dry brush 3 times. This problem also happens when putting snow on the black mountain, insted of white on black, i just get a grey mountain :( WHat could be the problem? Am i still using too much blue paint? Could the paintings im using not be good enough quality? It is oil paint, but not like bob ross paint. Please help me, this is driving me crazy! I feel i am so close now to be able to paint a picture. Thank u! love your videos!
It could be a few things but most common issue us to much liquid white base and too much blue. Blue is a really strong color and it doesn't take very much to cover the sky. If you White paint is too firm and a drop or two of linseed or walnut oil ( this will allow your clouds to flow. Wipe off your brush after every cloud you do ( picking up base color can not be avoided - its just part of the process ) Here is one of my older videos ( ua-cam.com/video/-avRuTJnV9s/v-deo.html ) it should help you out a lot 💪
Hi. When you make your liquid white I noticed that linseed oil you used was from Michaels. Is the linseed oil from the hardware store the same? Would I be able to use it instead? I’m thinking that it would be cheaper then at Michaels craft store.
You would have to check oh the hardware store is made and see if its refined enough. There could be additives and deposited in it (which would be no good) If you need any more help I started a New channel ( ua-cam.com/channels/J0nGU-oZthfagTyVVXiVQA.html ) feel free to sub there.

PLEASE REPLYYYYY👇😇 Great tips! I have some questions if you don't mind.... 1. Is Gesso and Liquid White two different steps?? I mean, if I buy a ready made canvas do I have to Gesso it or just go right in with the Liquid White??? 2. Can I make my own Liquid White by mixing Titanium White, Linseed Oil, and Turpentine? If not then how can I DIY it??? 3. Can I use plastic containers with oil paint and Turpentine?
1) Yes they are 2 different steps - If you canvas is pre-gessoed and has a good coat you can liquid white it when you are ready to paint. 2) Yes you can make your own - here is how ( ua-cam.com/video/7sOv2469YiU/v-deo.html ) 3) You can but make sure its the correct plastic - many chemicals eat through basic plastic containers
This was great but how do you get the snow to "skip" (look bumpy) Whenever I do my snow it ends up being either a straight line of white or I end up grabbing the color underneath :(
I made some video that might help you out - Snow paint breaks ( ua-cam.com/video/rmxb-CpQAiQ/v-deo.html ) & Adding Snow ( ua-cam.com/video/pLgd9pZCBXQ/v-deo.html ) - I hope those help you out. 💪
Very helpful video. I want to know that when I try to thin my paint with oil then take ages to dry. If I won't thin out then too thick to work out. Can you please help.
LC is best for black canvases and giving flow to paints and LW is good as a base medium if you want your colors to be lighter (when you paint on top of them If you need any more help I have new videos on my new channel ( ua-cam.com/users/WildCreates ) Feel free to sub there
I have a question about the wet on wet technique. What do you do if you paint part of a painting, and than life happens and the painting dries. Do you put more magic white on th area you want to work on. I'm not quite sure how to go about this
so i have a pretty dumb question. instead of inking my signature on each painting with a script brush and some thinner. Can i just get my signature done on a rubber stamp and dip the stamp in the color oil paint i desire and stamp it on each painting?
There are no dumb questions 💪 Funny thing is, I hate my signature too when I paint it on. I have thought about doing the same but never tried it. I dont think the paint would form well compared to wax seals. I normally sign the back of the canvas in ink. That was my work around - I hope that helped. Happy Painting 💪 Thanks for the dumb question 😝
Wild4Games thanks for the reply on the dumb question! I have another. Not related to the signature stamping though. I am a screen printer by trade. I had an idea of screen printing a logo on the canvas using liquid clear and then doing a nice blended background around the edges and corners. Do you think this could work?
Kind of a dumb question but i was looking for some extra gesso since you mentioned putting an extra layer will help. But what kind of gesso's do i need to avoid because i was looking and a majority of the time i come across acrylic gesso which i assume will not work for oil painting and wet on wet techniques. I'm trying to find local equivalents to the bob ross gesso.
@@Wild4 Follow up question....how do i clean brush of gesso is it water cleaning or does it need the paint thinner to get rid of it. I'm trying to make sure before i dive into it and lose a brush.
@@Xanarulez I was told that the Gesso is water based, so you should be able to clean with water and super clean up with dish soap and water if necessary The Gesso has to dry over night or 24 hours before you apply the liquid white base coat to the canvas before starting your painting.
I plan on making a video about this soon, but the short answer is: As you move up in "Levels" the Canvas cotton or linen will be thicker and more durable. There will be better and more coats of gesso. The frame will have strong wood and move into gallery wrap style. There are a few more small things, but I will cover that in the future video. I hope that helps
I find the canvas is also looser on inexpensive canvas. An art teacher showed me a cool trick to tighten them up. Use diluted Elmer"s glue, 4:1 ratio water to glue, painted on the BACK of the canvas. Works immediately. AMAZING.I keep a container mixed all the time, slather it on the BACK, and it takes no time to dry.
Good tip, You can also use shims (little wooden pieces) they can be used to tighten the canvas by squeezing them into the frame corners. You can spray some water on the back of the canvas let it dry in the sun and this will make it tighter. You can also gesso or acrylic the back of the canvas (kinda like your glue trick) All good tips :)
This was the MOST useful video yet. It gave me the answers to several problems I've been experiencing. Thanks again.

Thanks, Its not easy ( I still struggle with a lot of parts too) Its just sticking with it, having fun and above all consistent practice 💪 But thanks for the kind words 😃
I also subscribed because your vids are awesome, keep up the great work
Thanks Bro - I appreciate the support 💪
Great videos! what paint brand is a good replacement for the bob ross paints?
If you are starting out - Go with Winsor Newton Paints - They work well and are easy on the wallet 💪
despues de aplicar el magic whait se sigue pintando con trementina? graciasss
Is there a way you can make acrylics work for this style? I have a ton I don’t want to go to waste (I bought acrylic not knowing the difference between what bob ross uses and what I’ve used in the past)
I’ve seen people use some kind of thinner but not sure what kind or if it will even work.
There are mediums you can buy that will keep the acrylic wet for longer. But that means you would have to buy more supplies. You can always use a little bit of water and work in smaller sections as you paint and that will work too.
Are these good tips for acrylic paint or no? I'm nee to this and have only done a couple acrylic canvas paintings
Thanks

Wild4Games thank you!

Can this work with acrylic paint?? Awesome video btw!!!
thank you so much for sharing, i would like to know about you big brush??? what are the bristle made of. i would hing using the wrong brush could leave trikes on the canvas. Thank you
I am not sure which one you are talking about. Perhaps this one ( ua-cam.com/video/W8M5xTOJHvw/v-deo.html ) - I have some more videos on my new art channel if you would like to check it out
Hi, Thank you for making this video. i have a question, can i apply the liquid white straight away with no gesso added or do i have to add gesso to my canvas, Thanks.
@@Wild4 thank you for replying ! and im gonna subscribe to that channel. Thank you for helping me.
What brushes are you using? Great video.
I use the Bob Ross Brushes - You can see me use them more on my art channel. Feel free to sub there.

What if I can’t finish a painting in one sitting? Do I need to re-prep the canvas with magic white, clear, etc?
I have a hard time finding good quality white pastel . Do you think white oil paint would do that job as well?
This problem also happens when putting snow on the black mountain, insted of white on black, i just get a grey mountain :(
WHat could be the problem?
@@Wild4 Thank you so much! I will definitely try this next time :)
Glad that I could help out 💪
Can you clean your brushes with mineral spirits? Or do you have to use thinner?
Thanks great vid
Is it ok to apply gloss medium on the canvas after applying gesso?
I guess it depends on what effect you are going for - I personal would apply gloss coats and varnishes after the painting is complete
There could be additives and deposited in it (which would be no good)

What is magic white? Is that the same as liquid white? Should I also be buying gesso if I bought liquid white?

when you start the painting what would you apply on the canvas( is that gesso)?
Yeah it is gesso
This was so helpful

If you use liquid white would you still need to use liquid clear?
You could only if you wanted too.... 99% of the time you would use one or the other.
PLEASE REPLYYYYY👇😇
Great tips!
2) Yes you can make your own - here is how ( ua-cam.com/video/7sOv2469YiU/v-deo.html )
3) You can but make sure its the correct plastic - many chemicals eat through basic plastic containers
Thank you so much!!
Glad that the video could be helpful 💪
With the oil being from the magic white, does it mean that you don't need to mix any more oil on your individual colours?
Adding more oil would increase the flow or effect the dry times. So if you want to do that to your paint, then you would add more.
😊
This was great but how do you get the snow to "skip" (look bumpy) Whenever I do my snow it ends up being either a straight line of white or I end up grabbing the color underneath :(
I made some video that might help you out - Snow paint breaks ( ua-cam.com/video/rmxb-CpQAiQ/v-deo.html ) & Adding Snow ( ua-cam.com/video/pLgd9pZCBXQ/v-deo.html ) - I hope those help you out. 💪
Thank you! Getting coffee and watching now.
Very helpful video. I want to know that when I try to thin my paint with oil then take ages to dry. If I won't thin out then too thick to work out. Can you please help.
you can do a little mix of oil medium and thinner
When should I use liquid clear and when should I use liquid white?
LC is best for black canvases and giving flow to paints and LW is good as a base medium if you want your colors to be lighter (when you paint on top of them
If you need any more help I have new videos on my new channel ( ua-cam.com/users/WildCreates ) Feel free to sub there
I have a question about the wet on wet technique. What do you do if you paint part of a painting, and than life happens and the painting dries. Do you put more magic white on th area you want to work on. I'm not quite sure how to go about this
can we use the wall oil paint??
so i have a pretty dumb question. instead of inking my signature on each painting with a script brush and some thinner.
What kind of medium or material is the screen print?
Wild4Games plastisol ink forced through a mesh screen
Kind of a dumb question but i was looking for some extra gesso since you mentioned putting an extra layer will help. But what kind of gesso's do i need to avoid because i was looking and a majority of the time i come across acrylic gesso which i assume will not work for oil painting and wet on wet techniques. I'm trying to find local equivalents to the bob ross gesso.
Liquitex is a good brand of gesso 💪
@@Wild4 Follow up question....how do i clean brush of gesso is it water cleaning or does it need the paint thinner to get rid of it. I'm trying to make sure before i dive into it and lose a brush.
@@Xanarulez I was told that the Gesso is water based, so you should be able to clean with water and super clean up with dish soap and water if necessary The Gesso has to dry over night or 24 hours before you apply the liquid white base coat to the canvas before starting your painting.
Happy little Pegasus.

Regarding canvases at Michael's, what's the significant difference between level 1, level 2, and level 3 canvases (besides the price)?
