David Brooks is a BEAUTIFUL HUMAN. His long interview on a wide range of topics is fascinating, soothing, inspiring, and comforting. Unfortunately, I can't find it right this moment, but it's on YT, and David is the only one on camera. There's a person off camera asking seemingly random questions about everything, and David answers in full. It's just lovely.
David Brooks and Jonathan Capehart are on PBS Newshour most Fridays to discuss the news of the week. Both are great, and I appreciate David's tact when he disagrees on something.
Love this discussion. David Brooks has a great segment of ??? To ask others. Questions most people ever bring up. Book sounds quite interesting. Always enjoy watching him of PBS Friday’s.
I have so much respect for Mr. Brooks. I am looking forward to buying his book and settling in for a good read. I have a feeling I will be making notes and dog earing pages. Also appreciated his comments on current world situations. David always bring clarity and good sense.
After listening to David's purpose in writing, I found myself pleasantly surprised, almost to tears. Prior to this video, my only recollected exposure to Mr. Brooks was PBS Newshour, where he has a regular segment in which he makes "the conservative case" as opposed to "the liberal viewpoint", which is usually presented by WP columnist Jonathan Capehart. Then I recalled a faint memory of reading (as a young man) some of David's NYT editorial columns, as reprinted in my local Houston Chronicle. Maybe he's not such an evil/ignorant Trumpster after all. I think I'm gonna read his book. It sounds VITAL for our times.
I'm sorry, but I'm LAUGHING because David Brooks just kindly and plainly said to Joe what I've been ALL CAPS SCREAMING since this show started popping up in my autoplay: Joe, BE A GOOD LISTENER. I'm glad David's article resonated so deeply with you. PLEASE internalize this very basic courtesy when speaking to others. Stop interrupting people, especially your co-host and life partner!! Thank all of the gods for David Brooks. He is a beautiful soul.
AMEN! One of the reasons I have difficulty watching Morning Joe! Scarborough needs to talk less and leave his fellow host and guests talk!! Still haven’t forgiven him for the platform they gave loser45 when he ran for office in 2016!!
What a powerful interview. I have watched David brooks many times, and disagreed with his viewpoint many times but I listened to every word of his today. This man might genuinely be able to help those of us on the left who have found it difficult to engage with people on the right. I for one will be purchasing this book.
Me too! So thankful our parents brought us up in a diverse church in the 60s They simply saw all people as created in God’s image and worthy of dignity and respect 💙🙏🏽💝
The best conversation starter or way to meet someone I’ve ever learned, I learned from Malachy McCourt. As he said his name and took my hand, he asked, “Did you sing today?” It’s impossible not to be caught off guard when someone gripping your hand is asking not just for your name but for your day’s vocal repertoire.
Yep, Joe should watch more of his own videos where he constantly interrupts his co-host and also many times his guests. I think he likes the sound of his own voice a little bit too much. ;)
Good interview. I always appreciate actual conservatives like you guys to help me be a better liberal. Having different perspectives helps us understand our own shortcomings as well as different approaches to solving common problems. Treating people as friends and not as enemies goes a long way towards a better society.
He learnt it from his family apparently. Seriously though, his reaction is typical of us humans when hearing a message about morality, which is called complacency - it's the belief that you yourself don't need to grow, that you are satisfied with where you are now in your competence. It takes some humility to ask yourself to be prepared to grow, especially when you are talking to or about people you might think themselves desperately need to grow. I think in those situations, it becomes about saving face, that adopting that humble position makes it seem or implies that the other person is right, so we avoid being humble in these intellectual battles. Done it myself plenty of times. I have realised though that we should maintain our base standard and humility not for the sake of the person we are talking too, because many times it's not like they've done much to earn respect and even that we are responding to their despicable behaviours and commentary, but rather we stay humble for our own sake, to avoid being corrupted by the poison that is in the civic space these days. It doesn't mean we can't disagree. But like Brookes, I do think it asks us to understand 'why' people behave that way, from a human perspective, not from a superior or sanctimonious moral perspective, because trust rarely understands and is usually focused more on outrage, like Joe often is.
It is hard for me to listen to Joe because it’s rare that Mika is able to even start a sentence before he interrupts. This is a perennial trait of his and it must be a part of my own self as well because I just wait for “it” to happen. Sigh. One of the things I am working on improving myself…
Yes, yes, yes! The huge chasm in the US education system is the strength of many other countries' curricula. The accent on global views, on critical thinking, on debate taking the opposite position to the one naturally held by the speaker, on phenomenology, simply on trying to stand in another's shoes for a while. US public and most church schools offer none of these.
CLEARLY… David Brooks has wrestled with his personal angel and has risen from the psychological and emotional ashes to Speak Truth to Power. It’s a beautiful thing to see…
Love how David Brooks is teaching Joe how to interview but the first rule is "STOP TALKING". The Second rule for Joe is "STOP TALKING over guests". Third rule for Joe is "STOP TALKING over Mica". Seriously, never watch due to Joe's ego and rudeness but clicked since it was David Brooks.
Agreed. I rarely watch clips from Morning Joe due to Joe's smugness, arrogance, and lack of self-restraint. Even when he's making a point I agree with, I still can't stand him.
Yeah... It's for this very same reason I've stopped watching Bill Maher. Too much ego. Maybe it's over-compensation for the fact that, at least for Maher, the people who he is interviewing, know much more than he does.
Mr. Brooks honestly was refreshing: “My son served in the IDF just 2 years ago, many in his unit got wiped out…Netanyahu listened to a bunch of idiots who thought a lot of high-tech fencing was gonna keep Hamas at bay. No diplomatic reset, no concessions made, nothing negotiated, no humanitarian efforts in Gaza and the West Bank needed. Did that really work for us?”
I have great respect for David Brooks because he has become so open and honest about his observations of people of all stripes, not partisan. I will buy and read the book.
No disrespect to you, David - I like your positions, for the most part - but I understand Fascists - and I don't think they're interested in being understood, only in being obeyed and they'll go to the most extreme and hateful places to get that obeyance. Not sure if 'reasoning' 'listening' and 'respecting' them is going to help.
'try to make them feel seen, heard and understood'. That's what all of us want and need. Wise words from a wise man. Thank you, a great way to re-think how to live my day.
outstanding. I will confess that I have a collection of early sixties comic books that I go to when the world becomes way too much. (Showcase Comics 55 featuring Hourman and Dr. Fate has saved my emotional being on several occasions,)
"New book is my personal response to barbarous times. Of course, I don't mention how my deranged ideology caused the barbarians in our society and enabled them."
The anecdotes Mr. Brook’s references in his beautifully written book, are yearned for and sorely needed in society. During this interview, I feel he abandoned precisely what he espouses; curiosity. I feel he instead blindly echoed the partisan rhetoric of the host. Regardless I feel this is one of the most humane publications from a political commentator. And his command of the English language is a treat for the reader.
I’ve been watching Brooks since the beginning as he “Republican-splained” away their excesses of the moment and greased the skids for the horror we have today, I don’t care that he’s re-inventing himself yet again, he’s still always catching up, and always late in his latest awareness. The people to listen to are those who anticipated the problems and warned of them, however uncomfortably at the time. David Brooks has made a career of straddling apologetics in a way that was mollifying for the times but never really seeing ahead. Read him to feel better, but don’t kid yourself any good will come of it.
Not only does a person love to tell their story about themselves, but in doing so, in letting them do it, they can make different distinguishing thoughts, can come to different conclusions about something that they had maybe thought of for hours but never realized before they tell it. They can see a different perspective because they are in a different place than when they experienced it. And if youre listening and asking REAL questions, not just waiting to talk or go on about yourself, both of you can make so much progress on what you think of yourselves, your opinions, the situations, your lives, and how you think about the other person. People love to talk about thenselves, but a lot of times, for a lot of people, they dont believe anyone is actually listening or actually cares, and why would you be vulnerable with someone who you dont believe is being genuine? Who is trying to compete or isnt actually listening but waiting to talk themselves.
Always had a great respect for David's commentary, even though, I would disagree with his point of view on occasion. He is eloquent, comes across as honest, and gives us hope that there's still a bridge for us to cross if we have the courage.
David Brooks's response to barborous times seems to be to hit the sauce at airports and then complain about how expensive that is, blaming it on Joe Biden.
I thought his apology was heartfelt and pretty well immediate; he said he stuffed up, and didn't see at first how the post would be taken, but then after consideration (and the backlash), understood he'd got it wrong. I'm not always in agreement with Mr Brooks: he frequently downplays things that make me furious, but I'm letting him off the hook with this one.
@@jamiemawer4865 Okay, he did apologize. Being a Republican generally means never having to apologize. So he did, that was big of him. But his kneejerk need to jump on the "inflation bandwagon," when that would only benefit the eventual return of Donald Trump to the presidency, shows that you can take a Republican out of the Party, but you can't take the Party out of the Republican.
Did you even read the explanation of that tweet, or did you just jump on the kneejerk bandwagon? Lol. Brooks was actually making a tongue-in-cheek comment, and adding the expensive booze in the tweet was intentional. His point was that inflation is just an annoyance for upper-middle class people like himself, and used the absurdity of his tweet photo to contrast that with the very real daily life issues inflation can cause lower class families. Brooks is the 1st one to acknowledge it didnt come across as intended. But it was a good point nonetheless.
@@beta_cygni1950 I don't have a Twitter or X account, so I didn't get any context for that picture and his comment. I went strictly by what the WAPO newspaper showed in an article. The article emphasized that Brooks had apologized for posting it, especially since the airport restaurant was outraged that he implied the restaurant was charging $70 for a hamburger when clearly there was whiskey in the photo. That is a problem with comments anywhere on the Internet, be it UA-cam or a forum somewhere: a vital clue that the comment is meant as satire or irony is missing, namely the person's facial expression when syaing it. Readers can't tell the comment was made tongue in cheek and they take it literally. It's happened to me many times. I will trust you to have provided the needed context. WAPO didn't mention that Brooks's original Tweet was meant in satire, just that he apologized profusely for it.
Your book is a fine one, and while parts of it were uncomfortable for me, personally, if I am successful at implementing at least some of your points, I will be a better person. Thanks.
Anyone mentioned that on US media would be banned and blacklisted from ever being on air again. Even with the current conflagration, I've noticed joutnalists from europe or elsewhere interview people from.both sides, but the American correspondents seem to solely interview Israeli government or military spokespeople.
Fight Club 1998(?) taught us what Brooks finally gets: in modern society it feels like people aren't listening, just waiting for their turn to talk. (thats why the main character goes to support groups - they really listen.
After he got through the apologetics for Israel while not one word of sympathy for the Palestinians, we got to the profound stuff. I wish he would have discussed how we engage with people who spend most of their time with their faces stuffed in cell phones looking at stupid blogs and meaningless social media. Then, there are the people who ask you about yourself, and when you are honest and tell them the truth--which might not be pretty, they argue and try to retell your story!
Brooks would be OK if he'd stop hanging out at airport bars. I'm going against the grain. Brooks default position has always been to defend Republicans. He's been slow to react like all the others. By the time the alarm bell went off in 2016, Trump had the nomination. How bad could he be compared to Ted Crews? Really bad.
I've read and watched David Brooks for many, many years now and it must be said that he is a masterclass in 'character' and 'decency'. He's one of the few political commentators that I hold a serious respect and admiration for. Fantastic guest!!!
I like David Brooks. His perspective combines wisdom and insight, pause, but he hasn’t fought against the barbarians in his own party, long before trump arrived! I get it, the middle of the road is the surest path to get to your destination, but it also ensures that the buffoons have shelter when their idiocies run a muck! It’s nice that he has written a book about being nice to others. How to convey that they are seen and heard. Yet one has to wonder what he might of been, had he utilized these skills 40-years ago???

who does brooks appeal to? for as long as he's been flapping his gums and shilling books for himself, he's said nothing, he's gotta be the least influential and least meaningful opinion voice they bring on... the guy lives in a bubble, that doesn't even rub against the working class or normal people.
According to the annual employer health benefits survey conducted by KFF, a private health foundation, the average cost for a family health insurance plan offered through an employer has jumped by 7% this year, reaching $23,968. Joe is the farthest thing from being a good conversationalist. He's always interrupting, prefacing his questions with monologues, always talking over people. I hope he reads the book.

Insipid apologist for all things Republican until Trump showed up-David Brooks.
After he got through the apologetics for Israel while not one word of sympathy for the Palestinians, we got to the profound stuff. I wish he would have discussed how we engage with people who spend most of their time with their faces stuffed in cell phones looking at stupid blogs and meaningless social media. Then, there are the people who ask you about yourself, and when you are honest and tell them the truth--which might not be pretty, they argue and try to retell your story!
my personal response to your new book is to wait for it at the library
He's a R apologist. No words can cover up the radical, dangerous actions of his party.
Perhaps Netanyahu wanted this to happen. Remember, his govt was falling apart. This just saved him from investgations.
Fences may make good neighbours but as barricades against the enemy is a totally different issue. Walls are simply challenges to the bad guys.
Joe, be quiet and let Mika say something.
Engels said that in his private conversations with Marx, they realized the choice would boil down to socialism or barbarism.
Learn to ask questions???? Lol. The man never stops talking.
Oh please. Enough.
That's why I never supported Barbers.
Draft David Brooks
What if we eventually realize that almost everyone is mostly delusional about almost everything ?
this the same guy whining about an expensive meal for over $70+, but never mentioned about $50 of it was his bar tab?
Did you even read the explanation of that tweet, or did you just jump on the kneejerk bandwagon? Lol.
Brooks was actually making a tongue-in-cheek comment, and adding the expensive booze in the tweet was intentional. His point was that inflation is just an annoyance for upper-middle class people like himself, and used the absurdity of his tweet photo to contrast that with the very real daily life issues inflation can cause lower class families.
Brooks is the 1st one to acknowledge it didnt come across as intended. But it was a good point nonetheless.
very intelligent man
Let's talk about David lying about his bar tab to take a cheap shot at Biden!
I know, him carrying on about a $78 bill at an airport as if that is an accurate reflection on the state of the US economy...........insane.
who does brooks appeal to? for as long as he's been flapping his gums and shilling books for himself, he's said nothing, he's gotta be the least influential and least meaningful opinion voice they bring on... the guy lives in a bubble, that doesn't even rub against the working class or normal people.
According to the annual employer health benefits survey conducted by KFF, a private health foundation, the average cost for a family health insurance plan offered through an employer has jumped by 7% this year, reaching $23,968.
This marks the highest rate increase in a decade. Wow the highest since the Obama administration.
I argue that it wasn't incompetence alone. Complacency also had a role.
Has anyone notice she did not get a chance to speak until the very end about Mini Mouse - how ironic on a program about let others speak 🥴
Let's go NESARA/GESARA!!! 🇺🇸
He completely undermined his position and thoughts by leading with TDS.
God help us.
Its Country Fish and the Stale Joe! Oh goodie another book! It begins with the ominous sentence "It was a dar k and stormy night.." Yes big print - double spaced - yes a real "page turner". I will obtain my copy from the 99 cent barrel at the cut rate book store!!!!!!
Sane conservative , forgot that was possible
Comfort in - dump out.
I haven't read a word yet but I already know how necessary this book is and will be for our modern world... can't wait to read it!
Thank you Mrs. Brooks.
Morning Joe, you should let your guest speak instead of interrupting him constantly and taking all the space. Quite rude.
Maybe Joe will get a clue about bloviating less and letting Mika and her guests speak more. But probably not.
Brooks has made an entire career from just being wrong.
What?
Barbarous times when you have to pay $70 for a burger in an airport... and a couple of double Scotches
Why is this woman on set? She’s not allowed to comment or question?
Joe is the farthest thing from being a good conversationalist. He's always interrupting, prefacing his questions with monologues, always talking over people. I hope he reads the book.
I'm going to read your book David Brooks because other than foreign policy positions I thought you'd reverted to the old narrow thinking Republican uncompassionate influential person that you were for decades.
