For me: always a tie between Fi and Midna. Both for the same reason, but different steps, oddly enough. Growth and attachment. Midna starts as an almost antagonistic force, using Link for her own ends and utterly uncaring about anyone but herself. She’s berating, annoying, dismissive, and unhelpful to the nth degree. And by the time we get to Midna’s lament: you are racing to Zelda with all possible speed, praying you make it in time and don’t lose your best friend. Weighing the choice of using the sprint, because you know it bounces her around, and you don’t want to hurt her, but also trying to get her there fast, and every so often doing it just to make sure she’s still breathing. Or Fi. Who begins as a robot, but over time starts to develop a personality. From her cold shoulder to Scrapper, to her teasing way of dancing during the Isle of Songs, and the final step where she says goodbye, and realizes she was more than simply programmed to help, but happy to be our companion. And so much is done through her body language, with dialogue being a very distant second priority to her. Which makes it all the stronger when at the end: she bares her soul to Link and admits she wishes they could keep having adventures forever. Even appearing physically for one last goodbye, in a very human way, even after she’s put to sleep in the plinth. Just hearing her little whistle after beating the Master Trials (master mode sucks, but it’s so much more satisfying) literally brings me to tears each time, knowing she’s finally reunited.
I'll preface this by saying Tatl is not my favorite companion, but you're gonna tell me that Tatl is more boring than Navi? Tatl has a backstory with a family and friends and goes through significant personal growth, while Navi is basically just "hi, I'm Navi, look out for that Deku Baba is for the fifteenth time!" and then peaces out on you at the end of the game without another word. The kind of person that says the Sheikah Slate is their favorite companion is a software engineer that keeps getting rejected because they don't know how to interact with other humans, so they decide to give up on dating because "2D people are so much nicer than 3D people." The kind of person that says they prefer no companions (a la Zelda 1 & 2) lives in a cabin in the woods with no electricity or running water, chops their own firewood, grows and hunts their own food, and the only pieces of technology they have are a radio and a pickup truck from the '80s.
I read online that Tatl had much of her dialogue changed in post-N64 ports to be "nicer". I wonder if this may explain the perception he had of her character if he played one of those versions.
@@ellagage1256 No, it was the ports _after_ the N64 that made her boring. The N64 original is the one with the actual, interesting Tatl, you got the good one.
Man said “If you’re a Fi fan, this is your room” then put up a picture of what my room looked like when Skyward Sword came out and I fell in love with Fi
Tatl was snarky, had an actual reason to be with Link other than "well the tree said so", had a change of character over time, and exhibited friendship and loyalty. Tatl is best and you cannot convince me otherwise.
"Now hit that subscribe button, you big simp." I wasn't expecting to called out like that so bluntly. Not to say I'm a "simp" for Midna, but she is my favourite companion. 😂
Navi is my favorite because of this: "There's no way he's going to hold me back again! This time, we fight together!" As a emotionally intelligence adult: this line(s) gets me everytime now. She just a little while earlier says she sorry she couldn't help in the fight before and with the excellent score in the background while losing the Master Sword makes this the perfect line reading with some extreme emotional depth.
Fi an Midna are both the best for the very same reason. They are fleshed out in terms of personality and story, and you emotionally connect with them in a deep way. Midna was more well done, but Fi also deserves to be up there among the best, imo.
Midna is by far my favorite companion. Her development as a character, recognizing Link's responsibilities and the lengths he goes to protect those close to him drives her to do the same. Her sacrifice in the endgame still gets me teary eyed although I know she survives.
Deeply tempted to say Sidon should count as a companion, what with all the times we go back to him just to be told we're doing a good job and he's proud of us fjfjdndk
I think you can probably guess my personal favorite, but not for the reasons really listed here. She just resonated with me in a way I'm not sure how to describe but maybe a decent explanation is her infallible logical and statistical nature throughout the game clicking with my desire to fundamentally know all I'm capable of. Maybe it was the fact that she was so keen to hold the player's hand, despite lacking arms, helping a my childish self get through challenges I'd become so used to watching someone else complete with ease. Perhaps it was the comfort in knowing that, unlike every other companion, she never truly leaves. She may not remain consciously with us, but she's there every time we pick up that sacred blade across any of the games. I'm not sure. I just know I love her dearly and miss her greatly.
Zelda is the companion from Breath. She doesn't speak up much, but she can obviously talk to you no matter where you are or what you're doing, though it's usually just to warn you about the blood moon. I guess you could even say there are five companions - Zelda and the four champion's ghosts, who also tell you helpful things at any time, like "Daruk's Protection is ready to roll!", and actively assist you with things like healing and electro-frying enemies.
Even though they're not really companions as you aren't exploring with them a bunch, I want to give a special shoutout to both Medli and Makar. I love both of them and their respective roles in the Wind Waker as the Earth and Wind Sages. Plus, Medli is an awesome character in Hyrule Warriors, but that's a different topic. Back on track, my favorite companion from this list has to be Midna. She's plain awesome, enough said. From her character design and backstory to her amazing character development through the story of Twilight Princess, there is nothing to dislike about her as a companion.
Midna is also my favorite. I would also argue that Midna is the true protagonist in the game even more than Link. Love her story and how she switches sides
When I think about Zelda Companions I always prefer Midna. She’s my favorite over all companions but I honestly forgot Zelda and yes she comes right after her, she isn’t annoying and helps a lot. That Zelda goes with you the entire adventure makes the end more emotional when she holds Links hand you notice their friendship grew.
I like tatl, she's my facourite along side with midna since they're both "bad" at the beginning but have character development with their relationship with link. And i understand felling she's boring, navi was too nosy and they couldnt risk more comparisons other than "they are both flying lightbulbs", if it wasnt for this factor she would be less blend and become basically midna as a character. And i like how she engages with the world, even if its rare, like when she attacks saikon for trying to deceive link
I love Navi and Epona. I know some people might find Navi annoying but I don’t. I know that Navi might tell you useless things you know but she isn’t so bad if you think about the story of Ocarina of Time. Navi is the reason Majora’s Mask started. In the beginning of Majora’s Mask Young Link was looking for Navi because he misses her and that gives the Hero of Time more character instead of a blank character you just play. Now comes Epona, Epona is equally special as Navi is to me. With Epona it makes you feel less lonely when your exploring Hyrule, Termina or even the Twilight Realm, Epona gives you a little company when exploring anywhere you wish to ride. I love all the other companies but they aren’t my most favorite.
Whenever I do a video like this, I take my top three favorites and combine them, because it tends to be a better representation of me as a whole. On that note, my favorites are Navi, Fi, and the KORL... I feel personally called out by this video :)
Ezlo has always been my favorite. Minish Cap was the very first Zelda I played to 100% because I spent so much time playing it, uncovering everything. Ezlo is just the perfect companion to me. You forget he's there sometimes, and when he squawks out of nowhere to point something out, it always makes me smile. Ezlo fits well with me here. I'm a chaotic and give-no-fks kind of nerd. Probably one of the weirder people you could meet. I throw lots of people off (:
Okay, I was not expecting Linebeck on this list. I kinda thought he just gave ya use of his boat, but now I see what you mean by companion. He stays with you through the whole way. I feel slightly called out about being introverted, but it's fair.
I always loved both Linebeck and Ezlo because of their sarcastic personality and their dad like nature ,but Midna is an absolute favorite of mine, i loved her character all thought my twilight princess playthrough, and the ending got me sobbing and crying for hours . I wouldn't really know which one to choose between Linebeck and Midna since they are such different characters,so I'll say that Linebeck is my favourite in the portable Zelda games while Midna is favourite in the home console Zelda games.
Well, I can say I think Midna was my favorite, but saying Navi means you have more patience is definitely describing myself. I actually liked her. Game mechanic-wise she was a little annoying, but story-wise I thought it was nice that even though she was just a tiny creature, she still followed a child on a dangerous journey, so that child wouldn't be all alone.
Linebeck, definitely. :) Midna is my second favorite (her sass and character development are LEGENDARY), but PH was my first Zelda game and Linebeck also has a significant character arc. Paired with his iconic personality and, as you put it, his goofy dad energy, he's at the top of the list for me
I picked SP ghost Zelda because she’s my favourite Zelda of all the games (probably because you play through the entire game with her by your side, so she got the most character development out of all the Zelda. And she as the best design alongside tetra in her princess outfit, which is pretty much the same design) Which makes me think a video like that on every Zelda, Ganondorf/ganon and/or link would be neat.
Wait, but, where are the Divine Beast companions from BOTW? I know they don’t stay very long, but hey. They’re still “companions” in the sense that they help you.
Huh, I never really thought about it much but I kinda dig the King of Red Lions even if WW isn't close to my favorite. He wasn't too intrusive and had really cool surprise story relevance. You knew there was something up, but didn't know what at all. Midna is definitely a close second though. Having what was basically a secondary protagonist / almost antihero presence for much of the game was really neat.
LOL! “Just Navi but from Wish” 😂😂😂 Legit, Navi is my fav cause of nostalgia and it’s my cat’s name (she was a noisy kitten). I am a mix of both descriptions 🙈 I do teach dance to children as young as 2…so it fits lol.
My favourite game may be the Wind Waker but Midna is by far the best companion. She's bossy, she's deceitful and yet loyal. The character is just so memorable. My list would go: Midna King of Red Lions Tatl Ezlo I haven't played phantom hourglass or spirit tracks.
As a current preschool teacher and an annoying UNINFORMED internerless young kid myself when OoT came out…. I actually NEEDED Navi’s help and didn’t complain too much when she interjected… a billion times. So you were right on. But my all time personal favorite will always be Midna. No doubt about it. Her and Fi’s storylines and character arc’s rival a lot of those you see on TV shows now.
ST Zelda is the best Zelda. She's funny and charming. She goes through her own arc, from someone who'd rather stay behind and do nothing to someone who takes charge; finding her own courage. She is a hero just as much as Link in this iteration, even directly helping with the final blow to Malladus. Speaking of Link these two also have the best dynamic, they genuinely feel close as we get to see them grow together as the journey goes on. It's not just because she is Zelda, she is the best iteration of Zelda.
It's funny i’m a guy who loves pink, rainbows and bright colors yet I love Midna. Specifically, imp Midna Her design is just so cool, especially the glowing pattern on her arms and ear.
Love me some Midna! TP was my first 3D Zelda game, and all the other companions I’ve played with kinda paled in comparison. I definitely like the idea of calling Sidon a companion. Really, any of the other characters who help us enter the divine beasts (I’m blanking on names right now) could be considered at least junior companions.
Spirit tracks Zelda is easily the best companion, from actually having character, to a growing relationship with Link, and actually helping in gameplay! I mean what other companion is actually fully necessary to fight enemies and complete dungeons? Maybe Midna or Ezlo, because they can let you switch forms, but that's about it.
If tetra acted as more of a companion in wind waker by actually, you know, using the stone she gave you more that like twice. She'd be my favorite for sure. Right now though, probably either midna or fi
Honestly it feels like only Midna was actually fleshed out as an actual character that had some agency in the story where everything just kinda happens to all of the other companions
Fi and Midna are my two favourite companions in the series! Fi: Because I am a calm and knowledgeable person but kinda annoying person. & Midna: I’m a chaotic gremlin trickster who is very good at making disasters as well.
before this video starts I will say my favorite companion is Linebeck. Dude is great, actually has skill as a sailor and mechanic, he even took a stand when you needed him most and has a crazy ex?
Personally, I loved Fi from the very beginning. The way they fulfilled their task was done (imo) beautifully and I cherish their dedication and consistency.
I was gonna tie between Midna and ST Zelda, but i love Midna more as a person than a companion and i LOVE that zelda is ACTUALLY USEFUL IN SPIRIT TRACKS. OTHER THAN SHIEK, WHEN DOES SHE ACTUAL DO ANYTHING, AND EVEN THEN SHIEK ONLY SHOWS UP FOR 2 SECONDS AT WEIRD TIMES. ZELDA DOES STUFF IN ST AND POSSESSES DARKNUTS!! COOL!! sorry for all caps. Just needed to say it
Me: favorite companion is Midna Also me: is not edgy Also me: resonates more with the Linebeck and relaxed-person-Fi entries even though I've never played Phantom Hourglass and have Fi as my second favorite I am a paradox
1. If you're favourite companion is Linebeck, you're surely on Tumblr 2. I'm convinced Mr. HG hasn't played Majora's Mask or has always skipped Tatl's dialogue. To say Ciela has more personality than Tatl is a crime sir (I say this with love, ofc)
Tatl isn’t my favorite companion, but it was the first time we ever saw some sort of attempt at character development in a Zelda game. She goes from an uptight selfish prick to someone who is secretly insecure about their own cowardice and by the end actually develops a friendship with Link
Choosing between Midna, King of Red Lions, and Linebeck is hard because nostalgia plays into 2 of them and the third is a funny pathetic pirate dad who I enjoyed thoroughly. Not to say Midna and KORL aren’t also great in their own ways tho. Zelda does companions very well as a whole tho, so I don’t think there’s actually a wrong choice. Not even Tatl or Navi.
Ngl Wolf Link in BotW is my favorite companion in Zelda. Sure he is amiibo-locked but not only is he helpful but he's also adorable. Also Twilight Princess is a very nostalgic game for me so that's a plus
Midna is the best objectively speaking, though Ezlo is my favorite. I mean... Bird hat That is a perfect creature. I do like tatl, but mostly because she's an absolue b**** but also like horrifically insecure, and ya know, valid.
My favorite companion is Zelda from BotW cause she's better than Fi and the owl from LANS. Those are the only games I've ever played aside from wandering in the original and the castle of ALTTP. Also, I would like to say Midna is my second favorite. And one last thing, I pronounce Fi as f-eye since that's how you pronounce the ancient Greek letter of the same name (cause of pi)
Sure, the others are fine. Some are downright close. However nothing and I mean nothing beats Linebeck to me. He mirrored my inner monologue way to closely during Phantom Hourglass and the levity he brings single handedly makes that game the best palate cleanser after playing something darker like Majora's Mask or Twilight Princess.
Ezlo is my favorite at this point, closely followed by midna, but honestly a lot of that is colored by which games I've actually played--im such a mess of a lore player that I suspect fi's gonna be my favorite once I actually sit down and play ss properly. I've already threatened to write a whole-ass fic about her from her perspective as the sword slowly ages and rusts while she waits, voiceless. I've got several pages of notes lol
Woo Ezlo! I was really worried I was the only one that liked Ezlo in this comment stream. Considering you've got pages of notes on Fi waiting inside of a degrading Master Sword, that checks out (:
Fi is my favorite, even though she is SOOO annoying. She’s a great character and gives you nice tips that don’t give away too much stuff but helped me when I was stuck. Also, she’s literally the spirit IN the Master Sword. She’s seen every incarnation of link, and remembers everyone
"Has anyone ever said Ciela is their favorite companion" Me a #1 Ciela fan screaming here Phantom hourglass was my first game and i got really attached to her, even while playong Spirit tracks, i was missing Ciela
Fi has to be my fav. Her leaving and going to sleep forever in the master sword was heartbreaking 💔 and I wish she could have escaped the sword for at least ONE more appearance. 😢
Midna is number 1 partner! To be fair, I haven't played Skyward Sword yet and have only watched a few cutscenes because I refuse to spoil the game for me since I bought it for the Switch, but from what I've seen Fi is a very interesting character that I look forward to learning more about.
Who is your favourite Zelda companion?

Correct.
You said it all. Hope Tears of the Kingdom gives us a friend anywhere near as good as these two.
My favs r Midna and Fi too : D
Midna is and always will be my absolute favorite companion. She has the sass, character development, and just overall is the best.
Yessss
I cry every time I come to the end of TP ...Love her..
Shes the type of person that's mean and edgy but in reality she's not as mean as you think
I dont think any other companion has the depth of character development that Midna has in Twilight Princess.

I haven't played phantom hourglass or spirit tracks.
I think that midna has the best character arc of any companion and that she feels like a partner and not just a glorified targeting or hint system
As someone who played Spirit Tracks all the time with my DS, I agree.
It's funny i’m a guy who loves pink, rainbows and bright colors yet I love Midna. Specifically, imp Midna
Her design is just so cool, especially the glowing pattern on her arms and ear.
Spirit tracks Zelda, she has the most personality out of every version of Zelda.
3:46 I would've said ur horse is ur companion in BOTW. Most of us used our horse CONSTANTLY to get around BOTW.
Twilight Princess was my first video game ever.
Don't have a snack or drink but I _am_ cooking so you can sit here while I chop cucumbers, eh?
Twili Midna is gorgeous and Imp Midna is a sassy lil goblin. safe to say I'm a stan
The juxtaposition of my equal love for Midna and Linebeck kinda fits the way I've come to understand my personality 🤣
I feel that this list will replace my general “what’s your star sign” line of questioning… love this vid! Always fun to judge our fellow Zelda fans!😂
2:20 OMG. . . AS A HARDOCRE LINEBECK FAN I MUST THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE COMPLIMENTS DUDE
(edit: spelling mistake)
Midna is definitely my favorite companion. I do like Fi and Linebeck too though.
Nice nice!
@@HyruleGamer Thanks you too!
For me it's got to be Midna from Twilight Princess and Zelda from Spirit Tracks
My favourite companion is Zelda from Spirit Tracks
BUT the BEST companion is by far Midna
He's joined the trend... he's become one of them....
I have!
My favourite is fi because she's from my favourite Zelda game (closely followed buy twilight princess)...
And I find her attractive
If tetra acted as more of a companion in wind waker by actually, you know, using the stone she gave you more that like twice. She'd be my favorite for sure. Right now though, probably either midna or fi
I would argue that if the Sheika slate is your favorite companion, you're married to your Smartphone.
My favorite is Linebeck, but Midna is still goated.
As for Celia, I remember her being a bit sassy, especially towards Linebeck.
Honestly it feels like only Midna was actually fleshed out as an actual character that had some agency in the story where everything just kinda happens to all of the other companions
Fi and Midna are my two favourite companions in the series!
Fi: Because I am a calm and knowledgeable person but kinda annoying person.
&
Midna: I’m a chaotic gremlin trickster who is very good at making disasters as well.
before this video starts I will say my favorite companion is Linebeck.
Just needed to say it
Me: favorite companion is Midna
Also me: is not edgy
Also me: resonates more with the Linebeck and relaxed-person-Fi entries even though I've never played Phantom Hourglass and have Fi as my second favorite
I am a paradox
1. If you're favourite companion is Linebeck, you're surely on Tumblr
2. I'm convinced Mr. HG hasn't played Majora's Mask or has always skipped Tatl's dialogue. To say Ciela has more personality than Tatl is a crime sir (I say this with love, ofc)
Everyone has been speculating links new arm however we should truly analyse and speculate who the arm actually belonged to? A God? The zonai? Shekaih?
LINEBECK WOOOOOO LOVE THAT GUY SO MUCH
*me who actually really likes Fi*
:|
You do you!
same
Tatl isn’t my favorite companion, but it was the first time we ever saw some sort of attempt at character development in a Zelda game. She goes from an uptight selfish prick to someone who is secretly insecure about their own cowardice and by the end actually develops a friendship with Link
Ngl the ezlo one is one of the most accurate ones ive gotten in this entire genre of video.
Did you know that Ezlo is my favorite companion?
Choosing between Midna, King of Red Lions, and Linebeck is hard because nostalgia plays into 2 of them and the third is a funny pathetic pirate dad who I enjoyed thoroughly. Not to say Midna and KORL aren’t also great in their own ways tho. Zelda does companions very well as a whole tho, so I don’t think there’s actually a wrong choice. Not even Tatl or Navi.
Gotta be Midna, she has the most personality and an actual character arc
As a linebeck fan I can say it's pretty accurate
I like my horses from Botw, they are my favourite companions
Ngl Wolf Link in BotW is my favorite companion in Zelda. Sure he is amiibo-locked but not only is he helpful but he's also adorable. Also Twilight Princess is a very nostalgic game for me so that's a plus
Tatl is my favrite for nstolgia reasons.....Majoras mask 3d was my first zelda game haha
You forgot the best character in the series, the sexy beautiful old man in the cave from Zelda 1
I didn’t need to bring a drink for my snack: HG served the TEA
The real companion of breath of the wild is Zelda yelling in your ear the whole time
Midna was my first and Favorite companion in the Zelda series.. gotta say glad she was with us.
Fi is my favorite, even though she is SOOO annoying. She’s a great character and gives you nice tips that don’t give away too much stuff but helped me when I was stuck. Also, she’s literally the spirit IN the Master Sword. She’s seen every incarnation of link, and remembers everyone
What about people who's favourite companion is wolf link?
Those are called "furries"
B-but we play as Wolf Link
hes a companion in botw
I kinda wish raru was a companion, he could live in links arm like fi lives in the master sword, and could give context to the sky world of TOTK
based linebeck fan. everyone loves crime uncle
"Tatl is just Navi but from wish" funniest thing I've heard all day!🤣
"Has anyone ever said Ciela is their favorite companion"
Me a #1 Ciela fan screaming here
Phantom hourglass was my first game and i got really attached to her, even while playong Spirit tracks, i was missing Ciela
Me: My favorite companion is f-
*remembers all the times my health was low and my wii remote batteries dying out*
King of red lions for me! He was a great balance of help and support and he was a fricken boat.
Whenever I play Legend of Zelda, I always have my Wolf link Amiibo card already, so I can have wolfling guess my companion lol.
Fi has to be my fav. Her leaving and going to sleep forever in the master sword was heartbreaking 💔 and I wish she could have escaped the sword for at least ONE more appearance. 😢
Shoutout to the Discord Family ✨💜✨
Heyo
Indeed!
Midna is number 1 partner!
To be fair, I haven't played Skyward Sword yet and have only watched a few cutscenes because I refuse to spoil the game for me since I bought it for the Switch, but from what I've seen Fi is a very interesting character that I look forward to learning more about.
That comment at the end reminds me of how we dont really get insight into Link's family...Maybe TotK will let us learn more about his ancestry
Me who is very attached to my iPad: of course sheikah slate is a companion!
