This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

Morphy watching us from the other realm: *People in 21st century think we didn't have engines back then*
More like Morphy: Engines in 21st century seem like promising opponents (at 3500 elo)..
Andersson would have seen it.
Morphy was the codename for the 1.0 version of the engine. Version 2.0 was called Capablanca.
Curiously, back in those days some people would cheat with engines... but in the other direction! In other words, they pretended that they had a chess-playing automaton, which in fact had a human player inside making the moves. Some were rather elaborate, like the Turk, which could be opened and it appeared like there was only gears and machinery inside, as the human was cleverly hidden in a way that looked like there was no room for anybody there.
@@WarpRulez that's right. there was a very small-statured person who was a competent chess-player hidden in the fake clockwork!
8:16 Very Unclear is the purpose of this move.
Agadmator is Yoda in disguise!
Chess writers have long since put the adjective first when discussing moves, because you want to get that out of the way before you go into a ceaseless string of letters and numbers (or in later years, with symbols and Informant glyphs too). I wish I could remember what chess author quipped "Confusing is the whole conversation" but they were not wrong.
I think the rook move was strategic to entice Morphy to trade bishops so that Boden's queen can escape.
@@yawlright yes I thought the same but do you think Morphy would not have seen that and understood
9:54 i was thinking a lot about that move and then when he said "ofc all of u want to push the pawn to d6" i was like oh crap he got me
Haha Haha 😂😂😂 same
Guilty as charged lol
"Stauton's Minions" sound as if Morphy was an RPG hero.
What a beautiful but also disgusting line.
I'm sure players like Caruana and Fischer could spot that line, they're very concrete players with incredible calculation abilities. Morphy was mainly a positional player, though he obviously outplayed his opponents in every aspect of the game
Morphy isn't an RPG hero, he's an anime character.
Wonder if Agad has considered raffling a breakdown of a fan’s game. I know I would like him to do some of mine but think it would be a lot of, “As of mover 4 we have a new game because no one would ever play this losing line.“
Let's all take a moment to appreciate agadmator

Back in the 1960's when I learned chess as a teen and bought a Staunton chess set, we pronounced the name phonetically as "Stawn-ton."
yes stornton :)
Correct. I pointed this out, too. And, anyway, being English, with due respect to Antonio and his amazing command of English, we do know better than him how English surnames are pronounced. The 'au' digraph is pronounced as in 'haunt', 'jaunt', 'laud', 'Maud', 'audio', 'nautical' etc. I can't think of a single word where it is pronounced as 'ow' although there are probably examples.
@@1man1bike1road ??
@Tai Chi Tube Well that's 'oh' not 'ow' and we also have 'aah' as in 'aunt' :-) Pronouncing 'au' like 'ow' is how you would pronounce it in German ''lauf' 'maus' 'raus' etc. Strange; we have turned a chess channel into a study of English phonetics!
kuchcyk Staunton was an Englishman, and as an Englishman myself I can tell you exactly how to pronounce his name and it is indeed ‘au’ as in ‘author’.
10:08
Come on man that hurts 😔
Yes. My self righteous indignation is off the scale.
Agadmator you really got me with the pawn d5-d6 move. It was absolutely what i was thinking.
Staunton was English and in England you pronounce the 'au' sound like 'aw', this probably sounds super weird if you aren't from England but second nature if you are which is why so many people mentioned it!
dypthonges ftw
What's that in IPA?
@@jacobscrackers98 /ɔː/
In the UK I have only ever heard Staunton pronounced as "Stornton". The name is remembered more than the player himself because the style of chess pieces in modern use is known as the Staunton set.
History also seems to record that Staunton was essentially a coward who did his best to avoid playing Morphy who would undoubtedly have given him a sound thrashing.
now that is a completely new hair style that has never been repeated again
... starts the video.
... puts headphones on
... rewinds to the beginning for "welcome back to the good stuff"
Loving these Morphy games. On Staunton pronunciation, as a native English speaker I would say the middle vowels are pronounced 'aw' , as in law.
where's your dog? Is he ok? 27 videos into this saga I'd like to take a moment to say what an outstanding job you are doing with this material. Your presentation contains a wealth of anecdotes that always enhance and the depth and your research adds so much to what might otherwise be just a straightforward game analysis. I feel like I've been drawn into an historical mini-series on HBO.
6:52 "Check, Check, Check, Check, Check", a nice perpetual indeed
Multiple videos from the St Louis Chess club by different lecturers such as Erik Hansen and Dennis La Rue say the "au" like "author" in St_au_nton. As does KingsCrusher - whose dialect is the most similar to the man in question. Perhaps even more persuasively in this context is the prounciation of the chess set that takes its name after him. Search for "Staunton chess set" on UA-cam and the likes of Ancient Chess, YourMoveChessStore, Raul Galvan, Los Angeles Chess Fortress will pronounce the same way. Prounciation of Staunton in a chess context seems relatively standard and uncontroversial, and does not seem to be a UK vs US thing based on these examples.
That said, in the interests of balance, the "ow" pronunciation is likely the prounciation that would be prevalent for "Staunton, Virginia" or "Staunton National Park, Colorado". Haven't done research on it, I'm simply conceding the likelihood. I'm not aware of anyone famous from the US with the surname. Chess wise, the examples I've found of the "ow" pronunciation seem to come primarily from the non-English speaking new world, i.e. among those from outside Europe for whom English is a second language, particularly Spanish or Portuguese speakers. Now, I don't speak Spanish or Portuguese, but my guess is that the sound is simply not present in those languages, whereas it probably is either present, and/or the written combination sounds closer to the way that Staunton himself would have said it, in the likes of French and German.
My conclusion is that saying "au" like "author" is the right way to go, because it seems uncontroversial in the US, compared to the "ow" being pretty confusing to speakers from Staunton's homeland.
And finally, because this is a chess channel but you've mentioned getting into your wood - this does absolutely nothing to settle the debate but should unite everyone simply in being cool to watch (with the name not pronounced). ua-cam.com/video/KUZHk1fofkA/v-deo.html

“Unlike some of you” - Looks around nervously
This series is amazing
Staunton: first syllable rhymes with 'dawn', the emphasis is on the first syllable and like 'dawn' it is a little drawn out. Second syllable is as 'ton': clipped, short
It's a common name in Ireland, originally English
"weird moves" @8:16 Agadmator said it earlier himself. "He (Boden) really enjoys trading, obviously." He wanted Morphy to capture his bishop Be3xBf4. Boden would have his queen recapture and make an escape route for his queen. But Boden underestimated Morphy and Morphy declined the Bishop. Boden was projecting his desire for trades. The rook move was not excellent. But it had reasons.
Welcome back to the good stuff
Saga is almost halfway there and i m already in love with Mr Morphy's play 🤠
At 7:10 when you told boden's idea about his king it reminds me ding's king run vs carlsen in that match ding was awasome and in beast mode also
As a Brit, can confirm its definitely pronounced Stawn-ton with a short a sound like in Oar. St-Oar-nton.
That's the accent tho. Without the accent it's Stawnton.
It's like "haunted castle", so that makes sense.
Dan Kelly no it’s not an accent it’s proper English. It’s how the man would have said his own name.
@@iR3vil4te Then what about words in general? Which English speaking people pronounce English words properly?
@@iR3vil4te What are the proper pronunciations of Jones and Hall? What is the proper pronunciation of 'author'?
What a very wise way of handling that pronunciation issue. You would certainly have my vote in any elections to either European or world people's crisis cabinets! (I also like your speech!)
Englishman checking in: the suggested pronunciation ‘Stornton’ is closer than ‘Stownton’ (which you seem to think is correct) but closer still would be ‘Stohn-tun’. It’s an elongated ‘oh’ sound like in the word ‘sawn’ or ‘dawn’. If you can say ‘dawn sun’ then use those vowel sounds in ‘Staunton’ and you’ll be there.
Good game as always😉
Also, my best guess as to the purpose of Boden's ..a5 is to prevent Morphy from getting in b4 and c5, kicking the black dark squared bishop off its juicy diagonal. I make no statement of claim as to the soundness of the idea, but that's the only thing that makes sense.
Pronounced Staunton as in staunch . The standard design of chess pieces used in all tournaments today is named after Howard Staunton
I was thinking the same thing about you pronunciation of Staunton. Those people are right agad, you’ve been pronouncing it wrong. Not that it matters much. Love the content. Keep it up!
9:52 not gonna lie, I was flat-out bellowing my support for that idea. Then, I felt so attacked. But with good reason. That's why Morphy is Morphy and I'm an idiot.
You might never match Morphy's natural talent for Chess, but we can all dream of having that haircut!
@@awordabout...3061 that haircut is truly old-school classic. Calm water on the sides, roaring waves up the front.
Problem is also that Morphy was a very tiny man and I'm more like Judge Meek. Minus the judicial degree, physical fitness, money, wealth, prestige.. but I'm as bad at chess as he was :p
The "AU" vowel combination is usually pronounced with the short "O" sound, such as in the words "LAUNCH", "STAUNCH", "HAUNCH", "TAUNT", etc. While names often deviate from usual grammatical rules governing pronunciation, it seems likely, in this case, that Staunton does not.
Tai Chi Tube the proof is also just to ask someone who’s English how to say it, and it’s Stornton, as this guy says.
Tai Chi Tube stop being so unnecessarily difficult. It’s Stornton, just accept it.
Tai Chi Tube don’t tell me how to pronounce my own language, or try and tell me that Google Translate has greater authority to tell me how to pronounce English than a fucking Oxford education. It doesn’t matter how some stupid town in America pronounces it, or how the exact pronunciation might differ regionally. Unless you’re planning to speak English entirely in a Yorkshire or Welsh accent I suggest you learn how to pronounce it in the Queen’s English, which any idiot who lives in the British Isles will tell you pronounces it STORNTON.
@Tai Chi Tube Staunton is pronounced the same way you would pronounce staunch. Or as you would pronounce Taunton. And I am from the north of England. I'm not sure what more proof would be required, and I really do not mind if agad pronounces it differently, because he is not a native English speaker and so it is easy to let such things slide.

2:00 At Chess Olympics, Moscow 1956, Bronstein played dxe4 losing his Bishop. After Qd4 he created a central pawn wall. His pawns reached the 6th rank and Black had to sacrifice pieces to stop them. Won in 38 moves.

The most common pronunciation in English for the name Staunton is indeed "STONton" not "STOWNton" but don't even worry about it. It isn't important. Also, there's are entire cities in the USA who can't agree on how to say the name - Looking at you Staunton (pronounced STANton) Virginia.
He's English, so it's closer to "Stornton".

They argue mildly about it. As it is lunch time, they stop for a bite. After they place their order the wife asks the cashier, "Excuse me, can you pronounce the name of this place?" and the Cashier says "Of course I can, it is pronounced, Burger King."
