- Brilliant video from Mazda. The return of Johnny Herbert and the rotary Mazda 787B to Le Mans. Listen to that rotary engine scream!

Can't imagine how tough it must have been wrestling with that beast for such long periods of time. After the final stint in 1991, they had to lift Johnny out of the car and carry him to an ambulance, he was so exhausted. Good to see he finally got to stand on the podium! :)
You can see by the look in his eye how happy he is to be reunited with his old friend Mr. 787B.
So many memories of wiping the floor with people in Gran Turismo with this car. Such an awesome machine
tbone0785 gotta love this car man. Also circuit de la Sarthe is what this video is on
Made the mistake of getting an xbox :/
But then there is the ESCUDO!!!!
@@bestcomment2745 Pikes Peak baby!!! Loved that car too. Spent countless hours trying to break by top speed run around the oval track
they buffed the car in the video game. The actual car was slower than it's competition and only won because they broke. LeMans 91 was the only race the car won
and they say the engine didn't even break a sweat and can race for another 24 hours
It was dynoed at close to 1000hp and detuned to like 650 for the race. It was only running at like 60-70% capacity
@@Lanse1984 yeah Mercedes said the same thing about the M119 engine after 1989, and subsequently published dynamometer charts with the SAE..... to prove it was actually making more power AFTER it won the race...as far as 1000HP, thats excessive, id say 900 or so at 10,000RPM was more likely..... Of course, every race engine IN THEORY can always make more power..... thats the entire point of a competition engine, simply to make as much power as possible before the engine disintegrates....
Most people arent aware of the fact that Mazda had been lobbying heavily to the ACO in the years preceding 1991, and as a result (in the last year that group 2 engines such as the Merc V8 and Jag V12 would be allowed before the mandatory 3.5L formula would be implemented), they were granted the privelege of being able to retain the minimum kerb weight proscribed to them the previous year. Thus, every one of the 787B Group 2 competitors were running at 1000KG, while Mazda running at 825KG. HUGE difference... not only helps with speed but literally everything. Fuel, durability, etc.
It had a maximum output of 930 hp at 10500 rpm, but that setup was not used in racing for reliability reasons.
Actually its daily commuting that kills rotaries, they love being at top end revs.
Every now and then, I come back to this video for the sound of this engine and to see Johnny Herbert having fun driving it again.
What is not to like about Johnny Herbert? By chance, I was there at three of his career defining race meetings; his Brands Hatch F3000 crash in 1988, his Le Mans win in 1999 and his first F1 win at Silverstone in 1995. I just missed his FFord festival win in 1985 to get a full house!
He may be older, greyer and carrying a bit more weight but he still retains the impish enthusiasm of a young Essex boy to this day 😃
It kept me awake all night. From paddock campsite you could hear it around the whole LeMans circuit. Glad I was there though 😅
Me too!
god the sound of the shifting
especially the downshifts
One of the best sounding Le Mans cars ever!
Best sounding cars* ever.
Rotary sound combined with straight cut gear whines etc. Love it!
I loved listening to it every lap for 24 hours!
The down shifts at the end of the mulsanne are spine tingling. The sound of this car is truly epic, I think my favourite of all time. Those of you stating that this car only won Le Mans because the first 5 cars in class retired may be correct however do not forget the old saying, to finish first, first you have to finish! Any combination of vehicle and driver that wins Le Man's deserves the utmost respect.
Awe man! Johnnie Herbert finally took his bow on the stand! Chapeu!
Winning the Le Mans with this beauty, and after 20 years reuniting with it for one more lap.. I'm not crying, you are!

almost in tears, such is the beauty
This is why Johnny Herbert is one of my fav drivers and who doesn't dig a screamin rotary and them super awesome blips .
Chris Harris sent me here. I’m not mad.
Same here.
Same

Ditto, pleased he did!
Same
I've met Johnny twice and is my favourite F1 driver. Such a nice guy.
I was fortunate to be at Silverstone to watch Johnny put this car through its paces standing literally a few feet away from the track.... the experience was something else and a memory I will never forget !! could even see the concentration in Johnny's eyes as he came past :)
man... when he drops the hammer, that sound is just incredible!
Thank you ,Johnny thank you
you are blue eyes SAMURAI
we never foget your race
YOU GOT THAT IN ONE, chris rea ,s song johnny needs a fast car , so true
so nice that they still let the car go out on the track :D
If I ever meet Mr Herbert, the first thing I'm telling him is how much fun this video is to watch.
One of the most surprising Le Mans wins ever! But such a talented driver team. Particularly pleased for Johnny who didn't let his awful accident hinder a successful motor racing career; just a shame he didn't physically make it onto the podium. :(
Any better sound than those heel and toe downshifts on the 787B? At last Johnny gets on the podium too!
gosh gotta love the manual transmission
john doe When race cars were meant to be driven by men with BALLS
Thats funny .. was all we had in 90s..The Hewlands had strong crash boxes..very smooth
Automatics suck lol
doge tastic luckily there are no automatic cars
@@yaboileeroy3038 Your username starts with "Yaboi", I don't think you're in a position to say that
I don't know how many times I've watched this over the years but it must be double digits by now
Wot a FANTASTIC sounding ENGINE !!! Singing away like Pavarotti - driven with superb aplomb by Mr Johnny Herbert - The Winner - yaaay !!! Rx
Was a really nice touch to see Johnny on the podium.
Listen to those gear shifts. They are so smooth and harmonious unlike the 'coughing dog' shifts of a paddle shifter. This was the greatest era of motorsports with the greatest drivers in charge of their cars. They were the best days and we hoped they would never end.
Single malt brought me here.
Thank You Chris
Incredible to see Johnny Herbert running that strong after the past of the years!. Great video!! I have seen it like 10 times xD
What an absolute monster! I’ll bet he’s having a blast driving his old racer.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Nothing looks and sounds better than Johhny in his le mans winning 787b ♥
The only Japanese car to win Le Mans. Toyota came so close to joining that club.....
Really what year?
1999
2016
Jumm...Same thing happened in 1998 with Carlos Sainz in Rally GB
Yeah ..they got some bad luck..
文句なしにかっこいいぜ!
そしてこの舞台を作った人たち全てもかっこいい!!!
Dem feels..... I can't stop my tears
Still the BEST car ever I smile massively when i watch this
Never gets old
They really don´t make them like they used to... which is a shame. I could watch/listen to this car run all day long.
That must feel incredible after that time had gone by.. after that fight mazda put up..an engine too efficient to be seen as fair for the lemans race after they won.. they had tuned it down it was so fast and the sound of that car screaming is unforgettable! I’m surprised a movie hasn’t been done about it yet..
Chris Harris brought me here. Thank you Chris!
Gorgeous sound. Great camera coverage.
Sound better than 2019 f1
Sorry for bad english
Agreed
Agreed
Agreed. Nothing tops the sound of a 4 rotor
Sounds better than F1 v10
Agreed
This car just came out on GT Sport, and the engine sound of the 787B screams just as wonderfully as it is here.
This is just a flat out lie.
The GTsport version literally sounds worse than one they made 10 years ago.
Gt4 has more thumpy gearchanges, slower gearchanges (which makes perfect sense since this isn't a sequential like the noise in GTsport suggests, this is a manual, with a clutch to operate.), And at 10k rpm, in GTsport, it doesn't scream as much as in gt4. The gt4 version sounds arrhythmic, heavy and powerful. GTsport has garbage noise, particularly in the 787b.
Good thing they added an option to turn down gearbox noise.
Thanks for the upload! It sounds amazing! Thanks Aidan for your storytime about these cars
I am hoping to see the 787 in the 24hrs Museum at Le Mans in April if it's still there. I'll take this video with me so I can play the sound track !!
Love this unforgettable, crazy epic sound
Thanks for sending me here Chris Harris. Made my day.

u know the drill
OMG, OMG, OMG, OMG..................OMG! Had no idea they flew her back and let her loose again, thank you Mazda, thank you!
Lol, I get goosebumps each and every time I watch this.
Chris Harris sent me, even though I've watched it before :D
Haha same
Came straight from his whiskey time questions haha
Same here! I didn't get his Knight Rider reference...🤔
And me!
@@djjackjones1 Neither did I, I remember there being some talking at the start but can't remember what was said!
Bom dia !!!!
Que vídeo fantástico.
Que ronco fenomenal.
Obrigado pela homenagem à esse grande Piloto.
Valeu Jhonny.....
Muito obrigado pelo vídeo e parabéns pelo canal.
Abraço do Brasil.....
What a glorious sound.
Anyone else here from the Chris Harris Insta story?
Yup 😂
Yeah, but via Twitter...
No, Aidan Milvard did.
I'm not. Mazda 787B sent me here...
I wish the editing had shown the blow-by of the random car at 3:50.
Great clip, great sound
LOVE it.
man what a fuckingcredible sound...
The sound I NEED in my electric car of the future! 💪
Respect to you sir
Insane the sound.
That thing sounds like it's fueled by the tears of children!
Who's here after Chris Harris recommendation from the whisky files 😂
the 787b really sounds like an F1 V8 engine but with a clutch
Owen Chua sounds better than an f1 engine
this is what I jog too and its on loop
That thing is a beast - and Johnny has it tamed!
naturally aspirated and loads of revs. Gotta love it.
Best sounding car EVER.
Harris is right... it sounds pretty awesome!
Love the hitec steering wheel at 5•10... 😁😁
Frightening and stunning at the same time!
Wow !!! Amazing !!!
John Paul Herbert, the toughest driver in motorsport history.
Real old school men drive stick..
Sure bud
What a cool video!!
Love how he revs it in the pitlane ahahah just couldnt resist
top bloke is our herb.......
ジョニーの為に関係者の皆さんめっちゃ粋な事してくださいましたね!ジョニーも皆嬉しそうですね!😁😁😁
Mulsanne straight marshalls,''here comes the Mazdas''. Those things screamed...
fantastic
Haha - Herbert had "a bit of a go" then.
"You've got to be smooth, Johnny...."
what A sound!
This is the equivalent to a military soldier returning home to his dog
is his steering wheel loose or is that just pure flex?
This car and Johnny burned a hole in racing history. I don't have a lot of respect for the FIA. This is racing, you don't throttle it back and you don't control it you get out of the goddamned way and let people do their thing. This is the ultimate racing machine this rotary engine is just an amazing invention. This naturally aspirated 2.6 l engine blows Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar and Porsche into the weeds. This is its real purpose, it's real purpose is to race. It's better adapted even though they don't last as long as reciprocating engines but when you're in extreme environments like racing at Le mans, they actually do better. It's a matter of shedding the heat, they generate a lot of heat. Johnny at the end. They didn't have to haul him away this time, he could actually stand on the podium. This is one of the most epic race stories ever.
Sound so much fun
Johnny is a legend. The only guy I like from Sky F1
It's weird to see how flexible the steering is first at 1:15...
I do like to hear racing engines like this on tracks sorrounded with forest: Old Hockenheim, Spa, Le Mans, Monza, Imola etc.Mental.Hearing current v6s on "man-made" tracks is just crappy...
Good ould dayzz...
If you look close it looks like the entire steering column moves. I wonder if this was a safety thing or if it has something to do with the fact that the steering shaft is probably attached directly to the front suspension.
proper proper thing. Kind of reminds me of a MiG fighter for some reason.
Since I dislocated and broke my ankle a year ago (doctor said I'd never jog again which I haven't yet) my respect for Johnny has even become more What a man
I’m here because of Chris Harris. Why was I not aware of the existence of this car. Holy mother that sound is insane. 🤤🤤🤤🤤
Look how his chest is pumping on the straight. Quite a huge amount of adrenaline.
Here because the man on the whiskey files sent me !
Fenomenal
🇧🇷
@adrianwaj What was the reasoning?
guy reflexively looking in rearview mirror - as if someone could be there: like he went back in time,
Great drive r
Wow.
du Mozart tout simplement du Mozart
Herbert/ 787B it’s like ambrosia
Le Mans used to have a corner named :"Maison Blanche" right ?
+Thomas Schenck Still does :)
3eeple cuz i heard that a corner has been removed (don't know if it's true
Thomas Schenck the Mulsanne chicanes were put in in the 90s because of the fia saying they would not approve a circuit that had a longer straight than the long one at the Ring, and they reprofiled Tetre Rouge after the last death.
