In 2017 I participated in an event called "Let There Be Drums" in St. Paul, Minnesota, in which we attempted to set the world record for the most drummers playing in one place at one time. About 250 of us showed up at a bandstand with our drum kits. We'd all learned beforehand how to play "Rocksteady" by Aretha Franklin, Ringo's famous drum break from "The End" of Abbey Road, and most of us who didn't already know it tried to learn the Purdie Shuffle.
At the event a band took to the stage (which included several respected industry drummers whose names I've since forgotten), plus Mister Bernard Purdie himself, and 250 of us drummers all played in unison. When it came time to do the Purdie Shuffle, Bernard basically walked us through how to do it, exactly like he does in this video, and after a couple of minutes all of us were doing the Purdie Shuffle in unison. Afterwards, he signed my LP copy of "Aja." I'll never forget it.

I will never forget, back in the 80's, getting on the 79th St. crosstown bus in New York City, and a gentleman sitting to my had a pair of drumsticks on his lap. I asked him if he was a professional drummer (I a life-long good amateur.) He said yes. I asked him his name. He said, "Bernard Purdy." I smiled the biggest smile and told him how much I loved his high hat break from the days of Eddie Harris and Les McCann. We chuckled together.

OW! Now! The big big big big big big question: The triplet.
We all know about the triplet. We know that the triplet represents 12:4m
We ALSO KNOW that it represents 12:8. Too.
but you didn’t know that it represents the Purdie Shuffle. Hehehehe.
and before we’re finished, we’re going to do a little bit of that too.
And a good old-fashioned shuffle we might do that at the end as well,
but for the trime - time being we’re gonna do… triplets.
THIS IS a triplet, and it grooves like anything.
AH uh ee. Uh uh. Eeeee. Oyyneuuhhh doen-a. A-one-and-a.
    One-e-and-a. Two-e-and-a.
Hehehehe. I like this. I like this part.
    Now, let’s make that 12:8.
See? You didn’t know you were doin’ it! That’s 12:8!
Yes, It really is. Now! Now we’ll move from center.
Uh ba ba da da da da-da-da. Aye! Om ba dya bada bada dy. Dyo byo byo-byo-byo-buyo-buyo-buyo-byo-dy. Dy-yayayayaya-ahhh. HOO!
Now. Now that we’ve got the 12:4, and the 12:8, I’m gonna explain to you
    - ‘member that word: called “splain”. Not “explain”!, but I’mmon ‘splain to you what the Purdie Shuffle is all about.
    Gonna surprise ya.
    Its quarters. Hahahaha-ehehehehe. It’s eights. It’s sixteen. It’s dotted.
and it’s also: Triplets! Hahahahe. Didn’t know that, did you?
But you wanna know somethin’ else!?
    It’s also HALF notes.
Which brings about half-time. and you can also add to that a
whoooole note. And I’m gonna ‘splain to you by playing it all.
    Ooo. Ah!
    Hahahaha! Hahahahaha. Hahah.
Now! We’re gonna have a little fun with this, to let you know that they all work together when you put ‘em together, and as long as you groove.
‘Member those, those quarters? ‘Member that 12:8? HOOOOO! HA!
Don’t worry ‘bout those ghost notes:
    AIN’T NOTHIN’ BUT REBOUND!
To make it sound, and feel good. Ba-oo. Hahaah!
‘Member that old triplet we did? Oo aa! Baa! Deey! Uh heh heh heh.
    OOH! Hahahahahahahuh. YEAH!
    I like that.

To anyone struggling to learn this beat, maybe try what I did: think of your snare hand as a second hand on your high hats, then find the right spot on your snare and just tap it lightly until it sounds as much like a high hat as possible. Imagine you're playing the high hat with two hands.

It took me a week or two of bashing my head into a wall. Once you find and actually feel the rhythm, you still have the ghost notes to refine. Just keep at it, and if you get frustrated, stop - can’t force these dynamics.

    • @gonesville6873
      @gonesville6873 Рік тому +1

In case you're having trouble wrapping your mind around it, imagine that you're playing a triplet on the hi-hat, only the second note of the triplet is tapped on the snare in the form of a ghost note. Once you have that down, add the first couplet of the bass drum on the one and two of the triplet. From there it's all downhill.

I'm pretty much a progressive Rock , Jazz drummer. But. I play the Purdie Shuffle. Every day since. The 80s. Love Him. Living Legend. Played 'Rosana'. In many groups. Thank you for the nice vid
