Bernard Perdie:drums, Chuck Rainy:bass, David T Walker:guitar, Sonny Phillips:organ, Bill Bivens:tenor sax, Virgil Jones:trumpet, Pancho Morales:percussion, Lou Donaldson:alto sax
Archie Bell who wrote and sang this tune for years is in a houston hospice !! Please pray for him as he gave us so many good times thru our journeys !!!
My grandfather is in this band playing the tenor saxophone
Tynaya Bivens
Awesome !!!!
Hope my granddaughter says that one day!
@@pete3816 In general terms Pete, I won't be playing with "this band" when she says that, just thought it wonderful that a granddaughter stepped up & said it!....
Your grandpa is a great player! Playing with two of my favorites, Bernard Perdie and Chuck Rainey. A lot of talent on that stage.
How awesome to have a video that will live forever of his talent.
Watch where he says" now we gonna groove", showman stops, music genius takes over! Love it!
Imagine, no auto-tune, bright lights flashing, fire, smoke, just talent and great music...
😁What a concept!!!!
Yes grestness
Bernard Purdie & Chuck Rainey are a dream rhythm section. No words for how good this is.
They are great, and their music is supreme.
Where’s The Original Artists Who Made This Song 🎶
I know this video is about all these men here, but I wish to give a huge shout out to Archie Bell, who wrote and performed this classic with the Drells. This jam was one of the early funk songs from back in the late 1960's baby.As of 6-30-22,Archie is still alive and well at age 77 now.👋👋👋👋👍👍👍👍
That’s right I can verify that
I saw them in NYC in 1968 killing it. The sax player and keyboard were on fire 🔥
And a song that alway s make s me move no matter how many time s i hear i want to get down! Same thing when i hear The JB s music no matter how old it get s or i get it make s me want to get funky!
@@frankcarrasquillo6394 I feel ya Frank
Archie Bell is from my father's small home town, in Texas..( about 14,000) Henderson, Texas which is in East Texas...pretty close to SharePoint, Louisiana...there is good hunting and fishing going on in the back woods town..many great people there..
Shreveport LA I meant.
💃 2023 "still one of the greatest sounds around.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
2024 and forevermore! Aloha from Hawaii!
Just getting around to it.
Been on my feed for about a couple of days.
No doubt I was going to click on, and soon.
Yes in 2024
"Hi everybody, I'm Archie Bell & The Drells from Houston Texas. We don't only sing, but we dance just as good as we walk. In Houston, we just started a new dance, called the Tighten Up. This is the music we Tighten Up to ."
Here in '60's Cali, Archie Bell & the Drells was SURF music. So was Abbey Road...
❤

Music has never to been good since the 50's and 60's
@@kathygallegos2502 of ocurse it is just not in the big stages ;)
Not just grown ups but people that actually know about music and not electronics.
Great era 💓
You couldn't "tighten up" this band any further, they're absolutely watertight! Superb musicianship.
David Walker -- what a brilliant guitarist. Whatever "it" is, he has it.
And what a beautiful guitar. Never have seen that color combo before.
He's smooth , what a pleasure to hear him make that guitar sing !!
Perdie’s snare placement is unbelievable. His feel. Omg.
I came to hear the master Chuck Rainey play bass. He"s on thousands of great recordings.
One of the most underrated bassists out there, but not to us old school bass players. Like you said, thousands of recordings including Aretha and Steely Dan (check out Peg). All these musicians on this stage could hold a masterclass on their instruments!
@@johnclyburn4144 also on the Sanford and son theme.
Dude, all of them are. Bernard purdie is the biggest star on that stage. On more hits than others combined. But they are all world class musicians.
Purdie as well... Thousands and THEN sum
There's literally 500 years of musical experience on this stage, RIGHT HERE !!
This transmits a good brutal vibe, it is a good pain reliever for this difficult time. Natural, elegant musicians, Maestros..., long live the old school.
Yes..so great..agreed
It makes me feel every single possible emotion ever . In the end I just want to cry cause it’s so DAMN GOOD , I can’t contain the emotion it brings out in me .
Does anyone know if there is a recording of this show on vinyl ??? Or CD ??
Well stated Mon Frere.
@@taleinz1 Too hear this great grouping together! Phenomenal.Lou Donaldson was one of my uncles favorites. All around for combining sweet, tasty ,colorfull, bop complex, and as seen here vibrant energy and line combinations--- whew!!! If I were a cat such as Lou and a few others, to see many assembly line technicians, robotic cookie cutter smooth- shallow players become famous with one tenth of his gift...well, tragic. The rest of these cats are the Real Deal also...100 stars!
This type of aggregation should be all over internet,Netflix, hulu, T.V. .masterful!
Damn. This entire performance is like a continuous breath of fresh air.

The great Chuck Rainy on bass
Chuck Rainy is monster... not surprising
@@williampscott3539 OH YEAH
On many iconic Steely Dan recordings. (as well as Bernard…) Guys are awesome!
So sweet.
This just popped up in my recommendations. I'm a white 56 year old man from Shropshire England who primarily listens to the punky new wave stuff that I grew up with. I'm not usually into this kind of music but for goodness sake these guys can play, and they enjoy playing - you can see and feel it. Musicianship of the highest quality. I don't dance but you'd have to have rigor Mortis not to move to this. Bravo to every one of them and I wish them many more years of making people happy.
Love this comment 👌💙
I’m going to be able to say at 63 years old I love you guys hope you’re not hating me because I’m not hating no one not even myself you are more empowering me now then ever I grew up this music and now I’m blasting it every where n COPY THAT
Amen Donna, 62, and loving it! Wife's sleeping, kids can't keep up!!! Do it !!!! Feel so young and happy!!!
These are old timers kicking it . A good mixture of jazz and soul , they can play at my house anytime !
Remember seeing my mom and dad dancing to this in the parking lot of the grocery store after shopping(to this song)I was embarrassed as hell and thought they was crazy but I don't feel that way no more and I know they wasn t crazy either.
Crazy? Normal? Educated?
Your parents were right enjoying life. 🥰🔥
@@funklover24
True that , yea but the freedom and joy it must have been for them at that time to break out and start dancing in the parking lot back then . Sad thing is..... try that today and a "Karen" will call the police on you , sad times today man.
@@motomweusi836 Let's hope the corona-shit will not last too long ... ;) This year I was looking forward to some phonky gigs, but it's all canceled ... really sad times. Incognito is publishing a new CD, one song just came out, really good stuff. Just one example. I hope, there will be a tour.

They arre all superb.
Digg.....mmmmhmm!
That's SERIOUSLY FUNNY comment....LOL
An amazing performance and a shout out to the engineers and techs who captured this with remarkable clarity and precision. There are not many live performances that are better than this or better recorded.
Definitely clear enough to catch each note.
And the song is perfect.
Not only for these Gentlemen to showcase their lifelong talent.
But to us old Folks, Tighten Up, was like the groove of the late 60s, early 70s.
Great Rendition Fellas!!!
Perfect for a Sunday Morning wake-up with this Tune and a hot cup of Joe!!
Every one of the guys in this band have helped artists like Aretha Franklin, Steely Dan and many others make history. That is why they sound so tight and professional!
Lou Donaldson playing the alto on Tighten Up with Bernard Purdie will perk my soul up.
I've been diggin Lou a long time to.
Lou is one of the all-time greats of bebop and hard bop. In particular, his 1953-54 recordings with Clifford Brown and Elmo Hope are among the greatest jazz ever recorded.
No shit! Cool ass lou, with the boppin' funky, soulful, bluesy jazz solo
From myself and all the musicians from West Badin N.C.thank you Mr.Lou Donaldson for leading the way.Drummer
This is the best edition of "Tighten Up" I ever heard.
Few people can create the magical High-Hat action that Bernard Perdie does. So much to learn from this great musician.
Ralph Flores Any drummer who is favoured by Steely Dan as their first choice drummer just had to be among the world's best.
Tony Collins .from South Africa.
only other person i can think of with that type of mastery of the high-hat, was Earth Wind & Fire's Maurice White...especially when he was playing at Chess/Cadet for Ramsey Lewis..
@@RJNumber45 or Jeff Porcaro. Stewart Copeland did some pretty technical hi-hat stuff as well.
My Aunt turned me on the this great music a long long time ago. Great great happiness!
Notice how well attuned and respectful they are to eachothers solos. Could it be there would be so much more respect amongst ourselves if that respect was given to musical education programs for it to blossom and grow exponentially?
Classic funk played to perfection!! Love it, all those guys are outstanding musicians!
Bernard Pretty Purdue and Chuck Rainey. The most recorded rhythm team ever. Their grooves cover every major genre from R&B to jazz and rock to pop. Don't get it twisted Chuck is a monster. Ask Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten, Stanley Clarke, about his session work. I can only wish.
Well-versed on music dropping those names... all I know is I know what I like I give you props for your gift of information I just now what I like and I like all of those players.... it's got a little Latin rhythm which makes it fun

Bernard is the best! He was my Dad's drum teacher and is not only one of the best drummers ever to live, but a dear man! Thanks for the post. What a stage!
Right? You are so fortunate. Love to you.
wow michele, hope you were a fly on the wall during the lessons! you are very lucky!
That man can play those drums....what an absolute blessing,!!💕❤️👏👏🌺🦅🌸🦅😊

Amazing you're very fortunate all those people I know by their work and that would be incredible to have your family involved with it plus you that's so cool United system quit and why should we look at these elderly best musicians I'm Grandpa and your pretty it's good to have that conversation so keep playing music that's it
Music that's so pleasant to the ears- but to the average listener- they don't have any idea how complicated it is to play such a tune. Absolutely stunning.
Never forgot when i first saw Brother Purdie in the subway. Didnt know who he was. We just vibed & when he told me who he was i was in shock. I told him how my father was a big fan of his. He went into his breifcase & gave me a invitation to his 60th yr bday party in held in planfield, n.j. it was one of the best moments of my life. All the greats were there jamming until early morning. I could feel my pops presence too... saying son, im proud of ya..... ! 😊😊😊😊😊 r.i.p. !

one of the best natural drummers their has been in the last 40 years .... love you Bernard, love playing your stuff...
This group of Musicians is incredible to listen to , what a great piece of music !
Mr Purdie is the one who has laid the foundation for every others to walk on here.... Grooving baring his soul out.
Toto's first drummer acknowledged this very specific, when he explained his drumming on Rosanna...
@@Retroscoop omg yes he did too , wow thanks for that info . I’ve seen that interview with Jeff Porcaro and can now relate to it
Bernard don't play the drums, he IS the drums. Wow.
Man, I could listen to this stuff all day. Remember walking down the street with a transistor radio glued to my ear listening to Archie Bell and the Drells
Music for the ages. You can listen to this forever.
My Tighten Up fr '68 never sounded like this, 🥰 Fantastic!
Wow. Talk about a tight groove.
I mean, Chuck and Bernard are so locked in the ENTIRE time - not a single moment even a millisecond out of step.
To the casual ear, it sounds laid back, but the groove is actually pretty fierce. These guys are seriously ON.
Real Men!
Real Music!
The bass guitarist kept it rocking throughout!
Pure talent.
Bow down, this is greatness right here!
These men are some of my late husband’s favorite musicians. He used to listen to this groove when attending his dialysis sessions. ❤❤❤
Tatanya Bivens you must be so proud of him . I grew up listening to this band " TIGHTEN UP "
""WE WERE JAMMING"". PEACE OUT.✌️❣️
That's one badass rhythm section. Bernard has total command!
Oh, I see you've checked out what we've got going on in the rhythm section!
That's why he's so "PRETTY", hahaha.
Pretty Purdie, Harvey Mason, Idris Muhammad, Zigaboo, James Black, Johnny Vidacovich, Mike Clark, Elvin, etc.
America has gotz some "DEEP POCKETS"!

How could ayone not like this ?
What a privilege to have grown up with this music and the associated artists of record in top rotation. Vinyl was THE audio medium standard of that time, and it is STILL KING!!!!
Great performance! I love when top shelf jazz musicians take a simple pop tune and turn into something special! Uplifting music!
A lot of these musicians also played on a CD called King Curtis Live at The Fillmore West .
The was the band for Aretha Franklin . Who also has. a CD Live at The Fillmore West .
Give it a listen , you'll enjoy .
Also, those musicians look and act better than today's rap and hip-hop and some R&B artists. I heard "Tighten Up" when I was 14 years old.
"We're Archie Bell and The Drells...we're from Houston, Tx...this is called Do The Tighten Up.."
These guys can play, what a joy to watch!
Bless this good Man Lord give Him many more years of music making JOY!
If this does not move your heart and soul you have neither !!! Some of the most talented musicians that ever lived .
Masters that make it look easy. God bless you all.
All of these musicians are legendary guys that are veterans in music
What a line up!!!
Don't let BLM catch you using the White Supremacist term "Masters"!😨
Every time I think I've seen the greatest guitar player along comes someone else...David T. is somethin' else.
This jam is giving me a natural high, these cats are amazing! Thank you!!!!
I would love to ask Archie Bell and his Huston, Texas Drells how he feels about this incredible line up of, dare I say, Bernard Perdie's Jazz Messenger "All Stars" playing his Top 40 Hit song that resonates even to this day (2023). It would seem to me that having this tremendous Jazz ensemble doing the "Tighten Up" in such a magnificent and expressive fashion. I'd be willing to bet that Mr. Bell would consider this performance as a true compliment!
That was indeed 'tight'...so chill, so groovin'...It's a pleasure to listen to masterful musicians sharing their craft.
This is what happiness sounds like :D
Took me back to the family celebrations and all would dance young and old... NICE!!!!!
You can feel the heart these musicians put into their art.
When “Pretty” Purdie, the hitmaker shows up, it’s gonna be locked in like superglue.
…...Yep.
You done it.
You done hired the hitmaker.
You know the deal!!
6:00 you can see it
J'avais découvert Archie Bell and the Drells en 1968 . Puis ce fût "I can't stop dancing" Quel bonheur . Inoubliable .
Oui!
Man! This is music! If you don’t love this, then there is no hope for you
What is with the thumbs down? These guys are some of the world's greatest players? I suspect the thumbs downs are from non-musicians or should be non-musicians.
im a drummer or at least think im a drummer and man oh man that guitar work of david t walker is sublime
mattyp3400 I feel that. I’m a bassist, but David T. Walker makes me want to swap out 4 strings for 6.

About the great guitar player it's not that the parts are so hard or unusual it's just done with maximum integrity
All the cats on this date were a little older and a little wiser and more believable praise be

One of the best grooves of all time
Everyone is so great here. What a groove! Chuck Rainey, phenomenal bassist, and David T. Walker is way too underrated as a guitarist. I remember hearing Lou Donaldson's "Alligator Boogaloo" ages ago. Thanks for posting.
Dare I say it, this might be the best version of this song.
I've never seen anybody in my life as HAPPY and proud as he looked when he received the flowers at the beginning. Good for him. And these cats are all such whiz-bang musicians. It must have been a heckuva show.
His a bad man on that sax

"Now, we're just gonna groove"
This!
I must have skipped back to that 50 times, he makes it look so easy.
There's a lot of talent on that stage
We love Bernard. My eldest has been playing with Bernard since he was 9yrs old. Whenever they came to England we would travel down to London to see him. Ben is almost 28 now and you can see him playing with Bernard, Grant and Ruben on here. Oh yeah! Never rehearsed just plug in and play. The last song Grant first played for Ben about 5 minutes before they went on. “Ben Steele Music with Godfathers of Groove”
Ohhhh boy... memories!!!! Oh yes.. .. Queens.. NY !!!
how we all danced to this tune!!!!! Smiling!!!
Lou, Mr Shing-a-Ling, Donaldson!
His was the first jazz album I bought circa 1967. Learned how to play "Peepin' " on my trombone, taught it to my boys. We jammed after band practice at M H High School in Michigan. Fifty years ago and the music sounds as good to me today as it did back then; inspiring us to learn, grow, and pass the music on to the next generations. Thanks to all of the players here who took the baton from someone else in the race of great, artistic, and diverse musical expression. As we have taken it from them, hopefully others coming up will take it from us. Music education in elementary schools is key to the perpetuation. Keep the relay going for as long as we are here! 👑🎸🎵
Busta Bass Yes Sir,from Michael T Bass.
What a moving colorful solo by the Great Mr.Donaldson.Trash the songbird and Phoney Boney and listen to creative colorful Timeless improvisation..True talent here
Al Jarreau said you have to play until you and the instrument are one then jazz says 'well done' and you are free. Bernard is.
Bernard Purdie on of the best soul drummers ever. Great group overall.
I Dedicate this song to my big brother , Don , good memories I'll never forget when he taught me to do the tighten up dance !
This band sounds like a cool summer evening, I'm ready to dance now where's my girl!!!

Amazing, Awesome, Unbelievable! It was just beautiful music that you don’t hear anymore!!
This song is great! It is the best edition of "Tighten Up" ever played. The best source to find and hear high-quality music is on UA-cam.
I keep coming back to listen to this from time to time after stumbling on it a few years back. It is one of the most incredible pieces of music I have ever heard and I've heard it all in my seven decades on this earth. The playing is of course incredible but the feel of this song is just beyond words. Thanks for putting this up for those of us that were not in attendance at this amazing show.
they have owned it and with a smile on every face.
Awesome post! Most people have no idea how hard it is to sing AND play at the same time, especially when it comes to drums.
You got that right...
Just ask Phil Collins, Dave Clark and Ringo Starr 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
@@lanemiddleton9 Not to mention Peter Rivera.
All those drummer/singers and no one mentioned Levon Helm or Don Henley. Yikes. Or Karen Carpenter for that matter. And glad SupaSoul mentioned Peter Hoorelbeke (a.k.a. Peter Rivera) drummer and lead singer for Rare Earth. During my drumming career I sang a few songs, including "Sultans of Swing" which had a hell of a lot of words to remember. ha.
I have to say that Purdie's groove and rock solid rhythm is just another level. Amazing. Drives the whole song, and all the while seeming perfectly relaxed, which is why it probably sounds so perfect.
wow growing up in south texas in the 60's this song was done by archie bell and the drells....still remember..it was smooth....this takes me back....thank you
