@kriswarwick coming back to our conversation after your Q3 video, this is one of the best if not THE best comparison between the 28 and 43 Q‘s! Exactly these kind of example shots the interested viewer wants to see. Well done and fully agree with your conclusion about versatility of the 28. And for that reason I will also not sell the 28, which I did not expect when the 43 arrived. I always criticized Leica’s choice of the 28mil, but understand now why they did. Happy to be able owning both, but if I had to keep only one, it would be the 28 even though I love (love) the look and perspective of the 43.
Wow... Thanks a lot! These kinds of comments just make my day. Very grateful for that! Haha, I feel the same way. I bought into the hype when I got the 28 tbh, but learned to love it. Now I couldn't imagine not having it.
Nice review, I had both, Q 43 since day of release, Q 28 for just over a year. For me I sold the 28. I was cropping a lot for what I shoot. I shoot mostly people & cars at events so the separation I get now from the 43 APO much better and the more natural look, less distortion from a 43 compared a wide angle for me is better. I always wished the 28 was a true 28mm Completely agree on how the packaging has been downgraded, I was kinda shocked. And not getting a charger, weak. I was gonna keep both, but I prefer to only have one camera / one lens. Since 43 still somewhat new, I’m still thinking in 28mm mode sometimes.
Thanks for watching! That all makes sense! I found myself doing the same today. I just figured I’d be okay with the 43 for a shot, until I realized the 28 was the one for the job. Just because I have gotten so used to it
@@Mamo878 I agree that the Leica Q3 might not be for everyone, but comparing it to a smartphone is taking it way too far. This is nothing like a smartphone.
As a wedding photographer using the Sony A7R V for my professional work and the Fujifilm X100V for personal projects, I’m considering adding the Leica Q3 to my gear. I’m debating between the 28mm or 43mm focal lengths and wondering if the Leica Q3 28 or 43 would be a good fit for wedding photography?
Two days ago I would have told you that you’d be good with only the Q3 and Q3 43. After a couple of projects with those two I have realized that I still need my A7RV as the main work horse for projects and jobs like a wedding. The Sony is more reliable in terms of autofocus and speed. Thus for everything happening during the wedding I would prioritize the Sony (or potentially a Leica SL). But for the more staged photos I’d say the Q3’s will be my go to!
I actually purchased the 43 as a bit of an impulse purchase as I’d been slightly mesmerised by all the fancy review videos etc… only then I found out about not only the charger but horrid round hood you had to buy if you wanted a filter on the lens! A piece of masking tape and having to buy an original q3 hood left a bit of a bad taste in the mouth… especially having spent so much on the 43. 3 days later it was returned and a 3 month old q3 was purchased for £2k less!! Very happy so far… although I’m probably quite odd, I don’t like the street photography tag that’s generally assigned to the 28, i don’t go around photographing anything and everything, I do like the solitude of remote landscapes & I just like nice quality things that will give great results for a variety of situations… great video btw.
I can't say I blame you for this. I guess the disappointment didn't get to me as much, as I had the charger from the Q3. Good luck with your camera. I am sure you will love it. And if you find yourself doing street photography at some point you'll love it for that too!
I used to lean 35mm before buying a Q3, but am now used to 28. 28 is just such a good focal length for flexibility. You can sit across at a dinner table and take a photo of 2 people. One of my favorite things about that focal length now is how the extra space means I am more conscious of shadows and use them in compositions. Now I am torn. I see the world naturally as 35mm, but 28mm gives me slightly more creative flexibility.
Hi, can you have a ‘live’ view mode on the rear lcd which is clear with no text or data? The top and bottom seem to have a strip of info stopping you from composing?
43 for me. Way more fidelity from the files I can see. It has to do with the max F2 I guess. Also 43mm is exactly the field of view of my own eyes. Feels totally natural. Great comparison. Thanks for the video
@@kriswarwick I am also confident and natural with 3 shot panoramas for a wider shot. As long as the distortion is as good as on this lens, shooting panoramas for a wider shot is no issue
FWIW - I have the M11-P and the 50 summilux. When I switched from the Q3 to Q3 43 I got a mint copy of the 28mm Summicron. It's a beauty - compact, extremely sharp and an f2 so extremely versatile. I can take my M11/50 & 28 or my M11/28 and Q3 43 when I want AF and ease of use. Both fit in a small shoulder bag.
I use a wide range of focal lengths and choosing just one for a big outlay is a dilemma... interesting comparison. To clarify a couple of points - at the same aperture, cropping in on the 28 to match the 43 will achieve the same perspective as the 43 because your viewpoint dictates perspective (and therefore face shape), not the lens itself. Increased depth of field and the reduced bokeh with the 28 when you crop is nothing more than a consequence of using a smaller image area on the sensor for the same image of the subject, that's why mobile phones with tiny sensors have great depth of field.
Thanks for commenting and clarifying. Maybe I made myself unclear in the video. Obviosuly you won't change the bokeh/depth by cropping in. But thanks for clarifying this for anyone watching this and didn't get that!
A very good question indeed! For me I would say there are a few factors. 1. I bought the Q3 because I wanted to challenge myself more with just a fixed lense. Not being able to change lenses makes me think more, and forces me to be more creative with my angles. 2. The size. It’s a smaller body and the camera is super easy to travel with. The SL3 is so much bigger. 3. I have enough cameras. For me, who has a Sony a7rv + a lot of Sony lenses, I felt like I was good with the two Q models. I have been considering getting the SL3, but realized the Q’s together with the A7RV is a great kit. But I have considered it! 3. Price. The body of the SL3 is about the same price as one of the Q3’s if I’m not mistaken. And then the lenses might cost me just as much for one. So knowing that I am happy with the 28 and 44, it’s actually cheaper at the end of the day. 4. It’s better. I don’t know if this is true, and I’m not saying it’s better than the SL3, but since the whole camera is based on one fixed lens, you get a camera built for that exact lens. I honestly think this is an argument I am using to justify it more. But there’s something about having a fixed lens that I like. 5. The hype of it. The Q3 is so popular and such a big hype. A hype I love to be a part of. But I am sure this plays a role too. I tried to answer as honest as possible, and I hope it helped you understand. At the end of the day the SL3 is just a much bigger work horse, whilst these two are two smaller pieces of art. And I love them.
For me, I prefer the 43mm because I usually take portraits of my kids. But if someone wants to shoot street photography or landscapes, I’d recommend the 28mm.
OK, I am with the 43. Because I am taking a photo of what I see not a thing I imagine I could see. And we both know that 43mm is the human perspective which makes taking a photo getting what I saw. I shoot some with an X2D + XCD 55V which is the same perspective and really like it. I like a 40mm on an old M240 for the same reason. I just do not have wide-angle or telephoto eyes nor do I live in a wide-angle or telephoto world. The APO Lens is a big draw. And if B&H would ever send me the camera I would be a happier man. Yes, the Trolls of Wetzlar should have included a charger. They are despicable. Great review. ;o)
I have a brand new Q3 28 on order, and I’m thinking I may have made a mistake not to go with something like the new R5ii when I haven’t even gotten it. I’m worried about the autofocus. I mean… is it decent enough to take photos of kids, etc.?
Don’t worry! You will love it. It’s more than good enough for that. It’s just that compared to Sony it’s not great. And a lot of the autofocus issues will occurs when you have less time for it to focus. If you are taking photos of your kids playing you’ll be good. I’ve even used it for sports and that’s the real test. Enjoy the Q3!
@@kriswarwick Thanks so much for the reply. You eased some of my concerns and the photos coming out of it look so amazing. It seems like you are bound to go all in with Leica gear.
@@MichaelWentz-v9b probably. I would also be good with the Leica Q's only if I didn't do events such as weddings and other situations where I need a work horse. Leica used the Panasonic system for autofocus (if I am not wrong) and they have a way to go until they can beat Sony there. But the A7RV might be replaced by teh SL3 in 2025!
I totally agree, I have the Q2M...and I have to say that to own two Q, it doesn't make sense, it means put 14000 dollars (or euros) into two fixed focal length, pretty much close (still different), with that money one can buy a Fuji/hasselblad medium format plus a couple of lenses. I hoped in a q3M, but I have heard that due to the AF system it will be not possible. The 43 then for me it's not too tight to be so much better for portraits. In this regards I am thinking to buy something to pair with my Q2M...just to make portraits...I found a FujiGfx with Mikaton for less than the q343...nice video.
Very nice video. Interesting look at both focal lengths. I’m a Q2 owner so less cropable than the Q3 but still plenty wiggle room left. I have a Q2M too. Now that’s something I really love. It’s my favorite camera of the two. And no, I’m not rich, I saved hard and long.
@ it makes me think twice before I make a photo. The conditions need to be on par (shadow and light is even more important) and the composition matters even more (to me). It’s sharper than the color version too (lack of the bayer filter) and you can shoot in the dark at high iso without compromising IQ. I’ve been watching tons of videos and read a lot about the Q2M before buying one. I love this camera.
I'm on a forum with a very active used gear section. Barely used Q3 43 units are popping up every single day. Seems like a bit of a turd from the user perspective, not to mention the "APO" on the 43 has terrible fringing at closer focus which is honestly unacceptable for a camera/lens of this price. Blame the EU for no charger...nothing worldwide comes with a charger anymore thanks to their new law.
That’s super interesting. And when you mention it, I have noticed the fringing. Not that it has been enough of an issue for me to think much of it. But it’s there
The 28mm is just not to my taste. I bought the Q3 43 for all the features of the Q3 with a focal length that fits my eye. On a recent overseas trip using an SL2 and 24-90mm lens, I found that almost 85% of my shots were at around 35mm. The remainder was almost 95% 90mm, so I guess a crop is called for. But the Q3 is a great platform regardless of focal length. Also doesn't the new EU regulation prevent bundling a charger with the camera?
I used to think the same, bought into the hype and realized it's not as much of a hype as I thought. I love it. But yeah, the 43 is great too. Hm. I am not sure. I know about the camera HAS to have a USB C port, and they did provide me with a chord. But charging through a chord vs. a proper charger is still a huge difference.
Sony rx1r ii used to be my all time favorite camera but when I picked up Leica Q2 4 years a ago, I can't imagine myself go back to Sony any more. It is hard to explain. Using Leica system is an experience. I have know as least 3-4 professional photographers that started to use Leica and never gone back to use anything else as their main system again. I am so glad they finally came out with the 43. I am keeping them both Q3 and43as well. Yes, they are expensive. With Q though, you pretty much buy a lens and get the camera for free at this price point. Way cheaper that getting into M system.
Great video and interesting perspectives! We were gonna stick with the 43 with the type of work we do (outdoor portraits), except I can't get it to flash sync at 1/2000. It works fine but 90% of the flash output is loss. We found out the flash will fire AFTER the shutter is ~80% closed due to wireless trigger delay, and I thought Profoto already have one of the shortest delay. Did we buy into the leaf shutter hype prematurely? Do you know if either of your Q suffers from the same problem? Leica customer service has never returned my email but I am beginning to wonder if we got a lemon... I can't imagine wireless strobes are useless to every other Q owner at 1/2000, when they openly advertise 1/2000 flash sync speed... Thanks!!
Thanks for watching! And thanks for commenting! I will look into this and get back to you. I usually never shoot with more than 125 for my portraits, but I am also curious to see how it performs with the 1/2000 as I do that for sports
@@kriswarwick Yes please!! Maybe do a documentary on your findings?? So far nobody was able to flash-sync at 1/2000 with any off-camera flash... From Profoto to GodOx. Many have tried, and none of them worked...
I'm with you. Had the original Q and made the jump to the Q3 earlier this year. Then, knowing how the 43 would give me "more appropriate" portrait lengths, ordered one. I figured I could always sell the 28. No way. When I walk around with both, I cover 28 to 75mm easily with great quality. Expensive? Sure? But if you understand the value of these Leicas, they may not be a bargain, but to me, they are clearly worth it. And yes, over the years I've owned and used SONY, Nikon, Olympus, and Fuji. All good, but I kept going back to Leica and now I only shoot Leica. Thanks for this video.
@@kriswarwick I have an SL3. I' not a pro but as an amateur (for the love of it!), I've both studio and other photography that worked better with a system camera. I have a mix of Leica and Sigma glass that satisfy multiple needs. I really like the camera and recommend it enough, so long as you're okay with the weight, size, and dimensions. I used to shoot a Nikon D810, and though the overall designs make them feel very different handheld, the SL3 has some terrific ergonomics for my hands. The images are without question superb and with the Q3 and 43, I can cover everything that tickles me to shoot.
43mm is better for portraits, especially with nicer bokeh. 28mm is neither here nor there for portraits, as I always prefer 24mm for wide portraits. Cropping the 28mm will never get the same bokeh and perspective as the 43mm. And I prefer to get everything done in the camera without much cropping in the post processing and wasting the pixels & resolutions.
The Q343 you purchase the lens and get the body kinda almost for free. The APO lens series of Leica is the top of the line. Maxed in the SL system. Fun fact: Even though Adobe and Leica are going hand in hand, there is no correction profile for the APO Summicron SL lenses, simply because it’s not necessary, that lenses are optical perfection. The Q3 Summilux 1.7 is of course also perfect and super sharp. You can easily drag the sharpness slider of LrC from the default value of 40 downto 10 and sometimes even to zero (e.g. photographing people). That missing charger: I fully agree. The central shutter could be 1/4000 instead of only 1/2000.
Great review! I posted some photos with my Q3 43 a couple days after I first received it of a college basketball game on Leica group on FB and got attacked saying it's not for that. Haha. Wasn't my point, was same as yours, AMAZED at how clear the images where and crops! And I'm also keeping both Q3's for my main EDC bag! So that is why I just subscribed. Look forward to seeing your journey and comparing notes. Thanks.
Thanks a lot. And thanks for watching! That's funny. I think they should have a look at how it actually works as a camera for sports too. For some specific shots I prefer this one over Sony for those as well. Thanks for being here!
Great video my friend... I have both and agree with your findings. Often I feel the 28 is just a more interesting image and pulls me in in quite an alluring way. 43 is beautiful. Great pictures, but looks a little boring in comparison... Don't get me wrong you can take fantastic images. But it doesn't feel as special as the 28. I had resolved to sell the 43. But I can't.. despite my wife constantly reminding me it could buy us a lovely holiday. All the best I look forward to more content.
Thanks for watching, commenting, and complimenting! I agree with you. There's something about it, but I also can't get myself to sell the 43. Hopefully the 43 can find a way of financing your holidays in a different way!
"I'm considering buying the Leica M11-P with the Summilux 50mm lens and the Summicron 35mm lens. Do you think this is a better idea, or would it be better to just get a single Leica Q3?"
This is a tough question as I haven’t used the M-cameras. All I can say is that I am considering switching 100% to Leica, and there’s not a lot of things that won’t be covered by my Q3 and Q3 43. The Q28 will for most of my work be good enough to compete with the lenses you mentioned. Price wise it’s worth mentioning that a lot of the Leica lenses are close to the price of a Q3.
I had the Q2 and the 28mm didn’t suit me. Too wide and I sold it. I bought the 43 and I love it. Definitely more of my focal range. Love it. Still getting used to it.
The 43mm version is new, many have been waiting for a long time for a longer focal length, the new experience tempts many to try out the camera. Some hope it will be the perfect camera. As a Q3 28mm owner, I don't like the gray color as much, I think the black is much cooler, the fact that you can't use a filter in conjunction with the aperture really bothers me. Do you always need the high megapixels? I lose a few megapixels by cropping, but I get great results, perfect for social media. The 43mm is currently getting a hype because it's a new experience, but if you compare it carefully, I would take the 28mm version again and keep mine.
This is a great summary. “New is always better” is def the hype with this one. That being said; the camera is a beast and it doesn’t mean that I don’t love it. But if I had to pick one… 28
Great video that encapsulated my sentiments exactly. Had the Q2. Loved it, but sold it to fund a MacBook Pro and Sony 70-200GM2. Regretted selling it. Bought the Q3 43 as soon as it was available. Love it so much, but miss the versatility of the 28mm. So I’m now looking to offload my Sony A1, 70-200GM2 and Sony ZV-E1 and possibly my 16-35GM2 to add the Q3 28 to my arsenal. I believe I’ll have all that I need with the Q3 28 and 43 together. The 28 is a fantastic storytelling lens.
Thanks, Andy! I think you’re right. I’m sorry you sold yours. The 28 is so versatile and I agree with you on having everything you need with the 28 and 43 🙌🏻
@@kriswarwickthanks for the reply. Although you kind of already alluded to it, if you had to sell one of the two, which one would you go on to sell? Which one do you have more of a desire to keep now that you’ve experienced first hand? I’m thinking it might make more sense to trade in the Q3 43 for the Q3, rather than selling all my Sony kit to fund the Q3? Would you regret selling the Q3 43?
@@MrAndyGA oh that's a good question. I am standing by my statement in the video: the Q3. That is because of the versatility of that one. But now that I have both I am very happy I do. I think I would have had big regrets if I sold the 43 tbh.
@@kriswarwick I thought as much 😊 thanks so much I appreciate your reply. Of all the videos out there on the both cameras, yours was by far the most engaging, informative. and true to the real questions and considerations. Oh and your images are well taken too. You have a new subscriber! Would you consider making a video in what settings you use for nailing focus and exposure?
@@MrAndyGA of course! I feel like i owe people watching to reply when there are questions and comments in general! And thank you! That means a LOT! That's a great idea. I'll think of an idea for a video like that!
Been saying this since its release, it feels like a pointless move. The 28mm is perfect for street photography. Now if they release a 35mm Q4 with fully articulated screen and improved autofocus - let’s talk, but no way I’m chopping in my 28 for a 43.
Honestly, I probably don't have a good answer for you. I would say getting any of these cameras can be hard to justify. But if you look at the total price of a Leica M11 with two lenses, and compare it to the two Q3's, I am not sure if it will be much cheaper. For me, I have fallen in love with the Q3 28, and adding the 43 is just a bonus to my rig.
I thought so too. According to some people in the comments it’s because of a new law, but it still seems weird to me as you have to pay a lot to get a charger if you need one. I’m in NYC taking photos now and if I had to plug a chord into my camera whenever I needed to charge the battery, I would be without a camera for a few hours. With the charger I can switch batteries and let it charge while I’m out shooting photos
But largely irrelevant. Most folks have multupart chargers and the box is used once. Maybe mention it at the end, but you opened with it which seems petty. As such, I'm out and will go find another professional review.
@@rogerhuston8287I’m sorry it bothered you. For me this is highly relevant as I think a person buying one should know they have to buy a charger separately if they need one. Luckily there are a lot of good reviews on these cameras out there! Have a good one!
@@rogerhuston8287 No, “most folks” don’t necessarily have such chargers, so that’s an erroneous supposition. As to the packaging, not a big deal, but definitely an obvious downgrade for a luxury item. And if we’re gonna talk about “professionalism,” the biggest practical problem with the Q series 10 years on is that Leica still refuses to address the single SD card slot issue, which is a huge oversight.
@@RobertFalconer1967 Sorry, you are mistaken. Most folks do have usb chargers, so many they end up throwing them away. Do a simple Google search you will see. And if your biggest complaint is that it doesn't come with a power brick, then why even make a video?
Pretty simple. Scene (28mm) vs. Subject (43mm) Pick the FL accordingly. Besides, everyone tells different stories and you can tell stories with either lens.
I agree with that. Although I think you can do a lot of subjects with the 28 too. And you’re right; we do tell stories differently and for me the 28 does more of that. But I can also move and get a lot of the same with the 43. The genius thing Leica did with these is targeting different people and their needs.
Ya gotta love how people complain that Leicas are "overpriced" and then go buy one and, after that, even go buy another one. What something is worth is, by definition, whatever people are willing to pay for it. That Leica cannot keep up with demand sufficiently to keep its cameras stocked in stores is objective proof that they are NOT overpriced. What's more, if you are willing to buy two or more Leicas, they clearly are underpriced.
I see the irony and it’s not lost on me. I feel like I probably shouldn’t have used that word. But again, like I mentioned with text in the video, they can push the prices because we buy them. I think it depends on how you look at the term. Nothing is overpriced if the consumer buys it, but there will always be a discussion about whether it’s worth paying that much more for something. Personally I could never buy these cameras (not even one of them) as an individual. I am able to have it because it’s my company’s. But I really appreciate this comment because it’s very accurate! Thanks!
Interesting because I shoot a lot of 43 mm on my GFX camera and I love it. That is 100 megapixels and I've always bathing intrigued by the 43 mm focal length 35 too wide ....50 too tight
It might be okay when you charge the camera at night or when it’s not in use. But it’s not super convenient to have to plug it in to charge when you are taking photos. Thus if you buy a second battery, you need to buy a charger too
This feels like a focal length conversation rather than a Q conversation. If you have 6k to burn on a fixed lens camera you probably already own another full system regardless or you should at least.
I agree with you! It would be risky to buy this as your only camera if you work as a photographer. Depending on your photography, you might get far with only one of these for your work too. It's not as much of a workhorse as my Sony, but for many things, I'd choose the Leica. And in terms of the price, I can get these through my company, and I don't own any of my cameras privately. I don't know how I could defend the price tag if I did.
Have you ever considered using a 75mm for portraits? Maybe the Leica SL Apo 75/2? You’d probably be certain you’ve found the Holy Grail. Besides, a 75mm is the perfect companion for the Q3’s 28mm. SL3+Q3 and heaven is assured. 😂
I am looking at the Leica SL3 just about every day now. It's a big investment, but I already put my SOny A7RV out for sale. So maybe your suggestion is closer to reality than you thought!
This is most likely very individual and my way of looking at it might not be the same for everyone. I just think that by showing more of where the person or object is, in relation to its surroundings, will tell more of a story. A close-up will not tell as much of a story imo. It only say something about what’s in focus. Does that make sense to you? And what are your thoughts?
@@kriswarwick I think You are abusing the word "story". Probably because it sounds cool. A photo of you with your dog in the woods taken with a 28mm lens and a 43mm lens - more or less forest in the background - has the same amount of "story", which is ZERO. The size of the frame has nothing to do with "STORY". It is rather the "elements" of the frame strongly interacting with each other, referring us to some process/larger whole captured by the photographer. What you mean is simply more or less information. But it takes a combination of many skills, good subjects and luck to turn the information contained in the frame into a "story". It is very difficult to achieve this in a series of photos and extremely difficult in just one frame.
@@Dr_Pessimistooh I agree with you. These pictures don’t tell great stories. I’ve had the 43 for a week and made my review based on that. I still think I have enough information about the camera to do so. I am not trying to be “cool” as you phrase it. I just share my thoughts about it, and I am standing by it. For my style of photography the 28 tells better stories and that’s just how I feel. You are entitled to have different opinions, of course! I appreciate the questions you’re asking, as it makes me reflect more on it myself. But please don’t assume that I am saying these things to be “cool” I’ve used the Q3 for more than a year and I still think a lens that can shoot wider tells better stories
@@kriswarwickAgree! Story or the possibility of having a story is way more probable with a 28mm than a 43mm. It’s not even an opinion. Just an objective reality. Had Leica first launched a 43 Q camera and after several years launched a 28 version, then everyone would be talking about how this new 28 has “opened up a world of possibilities”… 😉
I agree with you! These were my thoughts too. The colors are just a little different. Not so much that you see it immediately, but like I touched on at the end; there's something about the colors of the 43 that stands out.
I am sorry you feel that way. I am not important at all and I am dealing with all the things most of us do. So even tho I wish it was not the case, I am affected by comments like these, and it actually hurts. I am trying to not let it affect me, but we all know it does. I am sorry you felt this way, and I wish I knew what I could do for you not to feel that way. I am just a human trying to share my experiences with these two cameras, and my intension was never to make anyone feel like I am more important than anyone else.
regardless of how much I love this camera, I agree with you. For me, running a business it feels more justified but I also know that I could get the same jobs without it.
You don't get a charger because EU regulations don't permit it. Leica is subject to those new regs that basically forced Apple to go USBC and remove the charger also. Anyway, who doesn't have a box of USBC chargers lying around. Do you want more land fill?
I got a chord and that’s fine. But the Q3 28 came with a proper charger and I prefer that. My bad not knowing about the regulations. Does this mean you actually won’t get chargers at all with cameras going forward? I am not talking about chords, but the actual charger. Charging through a chord into the camera is not as fast.
@@kriswarwick As far as I know. Yes. No chargers going forward. But I have no issues with charging directly. I have half a dozen USBC chargers that deliver more than 35 watts. Takes about the same time as the optional dual battery charger Leica now sells. Or plug into a modern computer port. Also, Q3's have optional wireless charging with the grip and a Qi charger.
@@gordoncahill1170so what do you do when you use your spare and need to charge the battery? If I’m out of juice I normally use a second battery and charge it. That doesn’t prevent me from using the camera. The way I read the guidelines it only requires them to provide you with a usb c port. But I might be wrong about that
@@kriswarwick Since I have both Q's and a pair of SL3's I have a lot of batteries. So I got the Leica dual charger, for travel purposes. I'll carry a couple for the day and have two charging in the hotel. But on a big trip I might have 8 batteries with me so a single charger is pointless. If I'm out with just the camera, I'll take a cheap power bank and a USBC cable. Then I can top both my camera and phone on the fly and only need a single battery for the day.
Great review of the cameras. Leica is on of my dream cameras and I enjoy watching videos on Leica cameras. We need more leica videos, can you do a POV?
Solgte mitt etter to uker. Lag når du skal skru på eller av. Dårlig autofokus. Ikke vid nok til innendørsbruk. Pluss et par ting til. Men skarpt glass.
Oh u have a problem with 'no charger'? Well then, complain to your 'green' government which demands 'no charger' now, because chargers aren't green enough, so u do not get one. All hail Apple.
Thanks for this nice comment. Personally, I feel like I compared the things that I felt necessary, and I concluded that for ME the 28 is more versatile. I also started the review saying I thought I'd sell the 28mm, but I realized that these two together will give me more than I thought. If I mostly shot portraits the 43 still would have been a better choice. By all means, feel free to criticize my choice, but I also find it a bit weird to criticize my choice and the reason for it. c
I got it. You think it’s ridiculous for me to say that the 28 is my choice, in your word, because it “does wider angles.” I find it to be more versatile for my use, but that won’t mean that someone else would find it to be more versatile for their use. But hey, have a great day!
@ You still don’t get it. You bought an expensive fixed standard prime lens camera to replace your expensive fixed wide angle camera only to conclude the older one suits you more. Because the new doesn’t do wide angle. Well, I could have told you before. And so could 99% of photographers. Tip: search for a wide angle convertor. 😂
@@caskraker I typically don't engage in these kinds of conversations, as I don't see why it's useful. But this comment does have me question if you watched the video. In short, I bought the 43, thinking that it would fit me better in terms of the photos that I have previously enjoyed taking. Now, having owned both for a while I am keeping both of them, because I love both of them. And having almost every lens from 20 to 200mm I obviously know the difference between a 28 and a 43 in the first place. My conclusion was that if I HAD to keep one, I'd keep the 28 because I've grown to love that one, and using the 43 made me realize that. When I got it a year ago I was not sure how to even use it, because you need to be more creative with a 28. It's def. easier to frame with the 43. And yes, that might be common knowledge, and I know that. But people who are considering buying one or the other might still find it useful to hear other photographers thoughts. I have already used the 43 for professional work, and my conclusion is that I am probably selling my Sony A7RV. I never said I wasn't going to keep the 43, or that I wasn't happy with it. I just said which one I'd keep if I didn't have any other choice. Fijne dag hoor!
Amazing video! Such a great review and gave me general grasp of what the differences are in both models 🙌 Super helpful
really appreciate that! Thank you!
I always wished the 28 was a true 28mm
Completely agree on how the packaging has been downgraded, I was kinda shocked.
Just because I have gotten so used to it
The 28mm for me is the way to go 100%!😃
I think it is for most of us. Now that I have the 43 I def see situations where I’ll use it, but the 28 is gold.
@@kriswarwick Totally agree with your review! another great video!!
Thanks a lot! Appreciate that!
28mm? Get real.
Might as well just use the camera you _always_ have with you, your smartphone!
@@Mamo878 I agree that the Leica Q3 might not be for everyone, but comparing it to a smartphone is taking it way too far. This is nothing like a smartphone.
Great video. I like the 43 better (but I do portrait so it is a no-brainer) Thanks for your review.
Thank you! That makes a lot of sense!
Searching Q3 43 and 28 comparison in YT and the algorithm brought me here. Really like your contents and would like to get 28mm also!
Thanks for being here! I recommend the 28!
I’m in the same situation as you… so, what did you decide in the end?
I have the Q2 & Q2M keeping both no advantage to this, Also the Q2 has no rolling shutter issues like the Q3
I see what you mean! Getting the 43 has made me realize even more how great the 28 is. Not that the 43 isn’t. Just that 28 is a perfect focal length
I love my 28 very much, it’s my go to cam everywhere. Thanks for the review.
Thanks for being here! Appreciate it!
Hi, can you have a ‘live’ view mode on the rear lcd which is clear with no text or data? The top and bottom seem to have a strip of info stopping you from composing?
Hi there! Thanks for watching! Yes, you can!
43 for me. Way more fidelity from the files I can see. It has to do with the max F2 I guess. Also 43mm is exactly the field of view of my own eyes. Feels totally natural. Great comparison. Thanks for the video
You might be right there! I see how that is a better fit for a lot of people, and it just depends on the use I guess!
Thanks for watching!
Jealous of your kit! Sounds great!
Jealous of your kit! Sounds great!
Excellent video. Love both cameras!
Thanks for watching! Do you have both of them?
If the lenses are fixed, why not buy the sl2 or 3? Newbie here and interesting in photography.
That makes a lot of sense!
These cameras were a blast to test out with you! I miiiiight prefer the 43 overall, but 28 is starting to grow on me as well.
Had so much fun doing this shoot with you! And thanks for the thumbnail photo!
Great review. ;o)
I love this perspective: "a photo of what I see"
Thanks a lot! Really appreciate it!
Of course! You’ll love it.
Yeah, we will see. It’s expensive to change systems lol. And I have to keep most of the lenses for my filmmaking 😅
@@kriswarwick if you were photography only would you be happy with just the Leica gear?
Thanks for being here!
It's an expensive "toy" and it's hard to justify. I am considering going 100% Leica for my still photography with the SL
Oh wow. I was considering the Q2M before the Q3 was released. What do you love the most about it?
But it’s there
@@kriswarwick joke post.
I haven't looked at it like that before, but you're right. The SL3 body is the price of a full Q3, so it actually isn't too bad. Still expensive haha
He sure is Ur best friend. U can bet all on that.
I agree with you 100%. I am considering getting the SL3 in addition to the Q3 + Q3 43. What do you think?
This reply might have been an expensive one for me lol
Thanks!
@@kriswarwick 😇
43mm is better for portraits, especially with nicer bokeh. 28mm is neither here nor there for portraits, as I always prefer 24mm for wide portraits. Cropping the 28mm will never get the same bokeh and perspective as the 43mm. And I prefer to get everything done in the camera without much cropping in the post processing and wasting the pixels & resolutions.
I see what you mean. I think having both is a great thing. But it’s an expensive choice lol
At $3000 it makes sense, at almost $7000 it's insane.
At the beginning of the talk he mentioned that his favorite focal length is 35. Thats easy to get with a 28 mm and impossible with a 43.
Thanks for watching! Are you talking about me saying 35 being my favorite?
I’m pretty sure I didn’t. I’ve never thought about 35 being a favorite tbh.
Can you give some examples of black and white photography please.
I will see if I can make a short on this!
Currently saving for a Q3, and really been wrestling with this dilemma! Thank you for helping to decide between them. Great video!
Glad it was helpful! Enjoy the Q3 when the day comes!
As far as I know, there is an M-mount APO lens with that square hood. It seems like the purpose is to emphasise that it’s an APO lens.
Aha! That’s insightful! Thanks. Could not figure that one out
Great review!

Haha. That was just the easiest way to do it for the video!
I had the Q2 and the 28mm didn’t suit me. Too wide and I sold it. I bought the 43 and I love it. Definitely more of my focal range. Love it. Still getting used to it.
In a lot of ways that makes sense! Love my Leica

The 28mm is perfect for street photography.
Now if they release a 35mm Q4 with fully articulated screen and improved autofocus - let’s talk, but no way I’m chopping in my 28 for a 43.
This makes total sense! Thanks for watching!
Why not buying a leica M11 instead? Keeping both seems... I dont know, not a good choice?
Honestly, I probably don't have a good answer for you.
I would say getting any of these cameras can be hard to justify. But if you look at the total price of a Leica M11 with two lenses, and compare it to the two Q3's, I am not sure if it will be much cheaper.
For me, I have fallen in love with the Q3 28, and adding the 43 is just a bonus to my rig.
I dont crop so i would get the 43 for sure
Downgrading the packaging and excluding a charger is a low budget move from Leica given this camera's extraordinary price tag.
I love this video.Thanks
I really appreciate it! Thanks!
Pretty simple. Scene (28mm) vs. Subject (43mm)
Pick the FL accordingly.
Still on the Q2 amazing camera that 28 is perfect for me I shoot landscapes street documentary and sport the lens is a great all rounder
The 28 is perfect!
@kriswarwick love it mate
Thanks!
It literally just says that they don't make many to begin with and that their manufacturing methodology is a slower one.
Interesting because I shoot a lot of 43 mm on my GFX camera and I love it. That is 100 megapixels and I've always bathing intrigued by the 43 mm focal length 35 too wide ....50 too tight
Yeah, it's a great focal length for its purposes!
Well your 43mm on the GFX is more like a 35mm on Full Frame...
@caffeinatedcameras it's 55 1.7 lens =44
Yes aware....if I was going to get a Leica I would get 28 q3
You can always crop in
@@nevvanclarke9225 Ahh got yah well that makes much more sense if you already did the conversion.
USB C. Universal. I actually applaud them for not including it. Less crap in my house. Their charging bricks are garbage anyway.
It might be okay when you charge the camera at night or when it’s not in use. But it’s not super convenient to have to plug it in to charge when you are taking photos. Thus if you buy a second battery, you need to buy a charger too
@ Understood, but every single device I own has a charger that will work with this camera. One less hunk of crappy plastic gets my vote.
the best Leica is the Leica on the store's shelf
So maybe your suggestion is closer to reality than you thought!
great video, thx.
btw- you look like Jesse Plemons' brother
Thanks a lot! Appreciate it. Haha. I’ve never heard that before but I guess I can see what you mean
Hey dude, why more background equals “STORY” for You?
But please don’t assume that I am saying these things to be “cool”
I’ve used the Q3 for more than a year and I still think a lens that can shoot wider tells better stories
@@kriswarwick ;)
@@kriswarwickAgree! Story or the possibility of having a story is way more probable with a 28mm than a 43mm. It’s not even an opinion. Just an objective reality. Had Leica first launched a 43 Q camera and after several years launched a 28 version, then everyone would be talking about how this new 28 has “opened up a world of possibilities”… 😉
For that price you get a camera that freezes! 😱
Yeah… that part is unfortunate
At 6:11 & 11:02 See, this is what I am telling everyone, Q3 28 gives Yellow skin tone vs Q3 43 more of Nikon / Fuji color. I like Q3 43mm skin tone.
I agree with you! These were my thoughts too. The colors are just a little different. Not so much that you see it immediately, but like I touched on at the end; there's something about the colors of the 43 that stands out.
Hard to get through the I'm so important bit...
I am just a human trying to share my experiences with these two cameras, and my intension was never to make anyone feel like I am more important than anyone else.
nice review. But there are still not enough valid reasons to justify USD 8500 price tag :)
regardless of how much I love this camera, I agree with you. For me, running a business it feels more justified but I also know that I could get the same jobs without it.
Fineee, I'll sell my kidney and buy both.
HAHA! Sure feels like it's that kind of investment. Not sure if I would trade a kidney, but I would trade a lot of other things lol
@@gordoncahill1170and that’s great for you and me who have more batteries. I feel more for the ones who don’t…
3:52 hahaha
Stop using whatever camera you’re using to take your UA-cam videos.
Yes. Your face looks so much better with the Leica Q3 43.
It does, doesn't it... Have to look into this.
is it me or your videos are dark?
Hm. Idk. It's not dark on my units, and I've watched it on iphone, mac and ipad.
@@kriswarwick ok, thanks.
Great review of the cameras. Leica is on of my dream cameras and I enjoy watching videos on Leica cameras.
We need more leica videos, can you do a POV?
Thank you! I am in love with Leica myself now.
That would be fun! As in just attaching my gopro to the top of it and shoot that way, for instance?
Why is this video so dark? Have to strain my eyes just to watch
Maybe you have to see if something is wrong with the screen you’re using? Good luck with Game of Thrones then 😅

Kjipt å høre. Hvilket hadde du?
43 😀
Oh u have a problem with 'no charger'? Well then, complain to your 'green' government which demands 'no charger' now, because chargers aren't green enough, so u do not get one. All hail Apple.
So you like the 28 over the 43 because the 28 does wider angles? Wow, that is one genius find.
By all means, feel free to criticize my choice, but I also find it a bit weird to criticize my choice and the reason for it. c
@ Where do you read criticism for your choice? You just don’t get it, do you?
I really wanted to give this video a shot, but your arrogant style of personality makes it insufferable to watch
I’m sorry to hear that. What part of me makes you feel that way?
