Life can be hard at times and if you’re like me, you may tend to think that you can handle it all on your own. Maybe you’ve done such a good job of “managing for so long” having to do something different or talk to someone can feel uncomfortable. The idea of therapy, to me, felt like I had to admit that there was something wrong with me or that I’d be showing the world that I was broken or didn't have it all together… but when my health started to suffer, and I was anxious 24/7… I realized my body was trying to tell me something was wrong and I learned that there is no “good health” without mental health. Therapy was the answer for me, it helped me put down all of the heavy things that I was carrying that didn’t belong to me. While therapy can provide so much relief, finding a therapist can feel so daunting. BetterHelp, the sponsor of today’s video, has done so much to make finding a therapist and starting therapy so much easier! BetterHelp is the world's largest online therapy platform whose mission is making professional therapy accessible, affordable, and convenient - so anyone who struggles with life's challenges can get help. This is a wonderful discussion with Dr Gibson. You asked great questions and elicited great answers from Dr Gibson, some of which I hadn’t heard her articulate elsewhere. She is a special person. Just listening to her voice calms and reassures me. And like you said, her work has been life-changing for me. As many have said, it’s finally made sense of what happened in my life and family. Thank you to both of you ❤

I love the question about siblings. We are 6 adult children of immature parents.

My father was 1rst type and my mother was 4rth type. But 40 years later my father is a nice and quiet person and my mother is a covert narcisist. I'm fine since I don't talk to her. I just say good afternoon, do you need anything else? (drive her somewhere or buy something) and I do'nt stay long or have a tea or eat anything. Ok than, good by, see you next time. Now, in my 50s I'm a healthy and happy person. I always give thanks to God, to my EMDR therapist and to many like you, dear Lindsey, who opened my eyes some years ago. ❤❤

@@DelSunflower33 Hello! I don't write or speak good English, I hope I can help you a little. I've been listening or reading many psicologists, some of them in Spanish, Iñaki Piñuel is in my opinion the best, Cristina Jung is very very helpful, a UA-cam page named Cristianos contra el abuso narcisista is fantastic... and some others in English: Joe Reid and others, a coach named Ana Pazo...
But I must add some new things: I'm helping my parents painting their house and my mother has changed since I was able to say that I'll not talk about my siblings one year ago. Now she talks about cooking, nice weather, nature, history, books...
Listen to many experts in narcisism, they help a lot and have tips. We came to this life to love ourselves first, in second place the other people. Many spiritual videos have helped me, thanks always to God and Christ Jesus.
To go deep inside you, knowing and loving you sincerely, your good parts and your bad parts, is basic. Write every day all you think, make a daily exam of your feelings and emotions, anger, sadnes, fear, happyness, etc. Don't drink alcohol at all. Don't take drugs. Accept who you are and be realistic about who your parents are. But now we are adults, we do'nt need their opinions or aprovals. Mum, I don't want your opinion about me never, not today, not again. If you need something from me, just tell me. I don't need you anymore. I'm an independent woman.

When asked on a therapist's intake form to "describe your family of origin", I actually answered "Raised by wolves." because there wasn't nearly enough room to explain anything. Somehow, I thought this would be self-explanatory. It definitely wasn't.
Dr Gibson's books have been absolutely life-changing & a frequent companion and frame of reference for both me and my therapist. Her interviews are always so rich too. Much gratitude!

Dr Gibson has so much wisdom to share. It's incredible to me how nuanced her understanding is of emotionally immature people and the systems they propagate.

One of the best interviews I've seen so far with Dr Gibson in the relatively short time I've been investigating this issue 👍

Thank you so much for this interview! Your questions were great. I think I have heard almost all the interviews with Dr Lindsay so far and this was absolutely one of the very best. Your questions and your ability to actually listen and leave space for what she wanted to say made this such a deep experience for me.

Regarding the part about how emotionally mature people make you feel comfortable (1:13), let's just not make this argument as a potential green flag to identify mature ppl. In my experience, manipulative (immature ppl) will be the best at making you feel like you can share everything, making you feel like you're the most interesting, etc.

Rewatching this episode!! 16:04 Affective Realism! Whoa….
“Interpreting reality through their emotions”! 🎯 oh the battle of acquiring the realization of Self Reflection while growing up without it and more. That unpacked so much. 🔥 Part unlocked 🧩 #change
