S4 Episode 5: Sacred Medicine with Dr. Lissa Rankin, NYT Best-Selling Author
Dr. Lissa Rankin is a New York Times bestselling author, a mind-body medicine physician, founder of the Whole Health Medicine Institute, and the non-profit “Heal At Last.” Dr. Rankin is an encaustic artist who researches radical remission, trauma-informed medicine, and spiritual healing. Dr. Rankin’s TEDx talks have been viewed over 6 million times, she’s starred in two National Public Television specials, and she’s currently co-writing her eighth book, “YOU-Turn” about the link between narcissistic abuse and medical illness, focusing on how healthy boundaries and Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy can help reverse diseases related to nervous system dysregulation caused by relational trauma. Throughout her lifelong journey as a healer Dr. Rankin has come to realize that all roads led to the same conclusion: People who are not responding to “traditional medicine” often have untreated, unhealed trauma, and treating that trauma can sometimes lead to seemingly miraculous radical remissions.

Life can be hard at times and if you’re like me, you may tend to think that you can handle it all on your own. Maybe you’ve done such a good job of “managing for so long” having to do something different or talk to someone can feel uncomfortable. The idea of therapy, to me, felt like I had to admit that there was something wrong with me or that I’d be showing the world that I was broken or didn't have it all together… but when my health started to suffer, and I was anxious 24/7… I realized my body was trying to tell me something was wrong and I learned that there is no “good health” without mental health. Therapy was the answer for me, it helped me put down all of the heavy things that I was carrying that didn’t belong to me. While therapy can provide so much relief, finding a therapist can feel so daunting. BetterHelp, the sponsor of today’s video, has done so much to make finding a therapist and starting therapy so much easier! BetterHelp is the world's largest online therapy platform whose mission is making professional therapy accessible, affordable, and convenient - so anyone who struggles with life's challenges can get help. Having read and listened to Dick for a bit now, and gotten over some really bad therapy while switching to a new IFS practitioner, I've come to know that all of my physical struggles are my "parts" and body trying to communicate with not just me but my family and community. There are many examples and stories I could share, but the biggest current one is working with my physical heart and finding the part or parts most deeply associated with it. For almost 30 years I've had afib and aflutter that's progressively gotten worse. There is no external trigger and my heart as an organ is in perfect condition as far as we can see, yet it beats so fast and out of rhythm that I have pain, nausea and come near to passing out. All of this comes and goes, so it's been difficult to track, like a rogue three year old. Having tried some harsh drugs to alleviate symptoms the last several months, not only did I feel worse overall but the misfiring kept breaking through anyway. It feels like taking the drugs or any other treatment has been and will be like duct taping a crying child's mouth. Heartbreaking(?). One thing I noticed as I was trying to work with the irregular beats while at my job or walking by the lake: every time my mind wanders into the default mode of criticizing others or things, my heart threatens an episode with just a low grade but noticeable set of unnatural beats. For now, it may be correlation and not causation, but when I then become aware of my less than heartful state, accept what happened and shift into compassion, the threat ceases. Wish me luck on the experiment so I might avoid surgical intervention. 😉 Thanks for the new interview with the doc.

      Thank you so so much for sharing this! Also, in my opinion you're doing the work, you don't need luck, just reassurance! Keep going and remember go inside often to see what it is your parts are trying to tell you, that's where the magic happens!

    Regarding the part about how emotionally mature people make you feel comfortable (1:13), let's just not make this argument as a potential green flag to identify mature ppl. In my experience, manipulative (immature ppl) will be the best at making you feel like you can share everything, making you feel like you're the most interesting, etc.

    My father was 1rst type and my mother was 4rth type. But 40 years later my father is a nice and quiet person and my mother is a covert narcisist. I'm fine since I don't talk to her. I just say good afternoon, do you need anything else? (drive her somewhere or buy something) and I do'nt stay long or have a tea or eat anything. Ok than, good by, see you next time. Now, in my 50s I'm a healthy and happy person. I always give thanks to God, to my EMDR therapist and to many like you, dear Lindsey, who opened my eyes some years ago. ❤❤

      @@DelSunflower33 Hello! I don't write or speak good English, I hope I can help you a little. I've been listening or reading many psicologists, some of them in Spanish, Iñaki Piñuel is in my opinion the best, Cristina Jung is very very helpful, a UA-cam page named Cristianos contra el abuso narcisista is fantastic... and some others in English: Joe Reid and others, a coach named Ana Pazo... But I must add some new things: I'm helping my parents painting their house and my mother has changed since I was able to say that I'll not talk about my siblings one year ago. Now she talks about cooking, nice weather, nature, history, books... Listen to many experts in narcisism, they help a lot and have tips. We came to this life to love ourselves first, in second place the other people. Many spiritual videos have helped me, thanks always to God and Christ Jesus. To go deep inside you, knowing and loving you sincerely, your good parts and your bad parts, is basic. Write every day all you think, make a daily exam of your feelings and emotions, anger, sadnes, fear, happyness, etc. Don't drink alcohol at all. Don't take drugs. Accept who you are and be realistic about who your parents are. But now we are adults, we do'nt need their opinions or aprovals. Mum, I don't want your opinion about me never, not today, not again. If you need something from me, just tell me. I don't need you anymore. I'm an independent woman.

    As someone who teaches art and art history, to hear a woman who fancies herself an intellectual butcher The Creation of Adam so badly, and with such confidence is mind blowing. Sadly, though, this is just a symptom of a bigger problem. There was a time when academics chose their words carefully and thought about what they were going to say and whether or not they had the knowledge to say it. Now it's all about an idea - regardless of whether or not it has merit. This woman should be embarrassed.

      On the other hand, some of the most clueless ignorant people are teachers, as you demonstrate. It actually doesn't matter whether the Sistine Chapel was about David or God or whatever. The point is, all of our religious iconography is overwhelmingly white. The notion of a white Jesus that the European colonists brought to Black and Brown countries as a way to basically help justify their desire to enslave them and brutalize them and steal their lands. It is astounding that as a teacher, you don't know that. The same brush that you're attempting to paint her with, actually applies to you. I actually feel sorry for your students, if indeed you're telling the truth about your credentials.

    • @vincentcerasoli5969
      @vincentcerasoli5969 3 місяці тому

      As an educator, shouldn't you be choosing your words more carefully? You should know that the vast majority of religious iconography is white. When in fact Jesus and his family were people of color. Her point, which you're missing, is that it doesn't matter whether it was David or Adam or whatever. The point is they are venerated by virtue of being white. Christianity and white supremacy have never been mutually exclusive. If you teach art history then you know that the notion of a white Jesus was used for centuries to help enslave, brutalize black and brown people and steal their lands all in the name of white supremacy and christianity. So the same brush that you're attempting to paint Dr. Diangelo with actually in fact applies to you. I actually don't believe you need to be an expert on art history in order to accurately deconstruct systemic racism and white supremacy. On the other hand, as you demonstrate, just because you're an art history teacher doesn't mean you are educated on race. I'm actually embarrassed for you.

      @@vincentcerasoli5969 Your entire argument misses the point. Michelangelo wouldn't have viewed Christ as a person of colour, just like someone from the Middle East wouldn't have viewed Christ as "white." People don't admire the Sistine Chapel and the Creation of Adam because Adam is white and Michelangelo never intended it as such. Suggesting that this painting, or even Christ is "venerated by virtue of being white" is utter delusion, and post hoc reasoning of the highest form The fact that an "educated woman" like this is trying to make that point - or even suggest that somehow a Renaissance painting created by a person who aimed to show the "glory of God" rather than "race" is emblematic of the tripe she's peddling - is absolutely asinine. I'm embarrassed for her and *you* for buying into such foolishness.

    This narcissistic and self-destructive psychological and emotional dynamic (bouncing around in DiAngelo's skull), was analyzed in-depth and documented in detail starting over 30 years ago by Industrial Psychologist Howard S. Schwartz. For a comprehensive yet detailed overview, read SOCIETY AGAINST ITSELF: Political Correctness and Organizational Self-Destruction, Karnac, 2010. "...we do well to recall that political correctness does not acknowledge limitation and does not lend itself to the reasonable resolution of the grievances that it champions. On the contrary, the very notion of reasonableness, and even that of reason, comes under its attack (de-structuralism and postmodernism). The concept of victimization that it validates is not relative and defined with regard to a Just Order. Rather, it is absolute and defined with regard to an unattainable ideal. Thus, it legitimates a war against everything that exists and even everything that could exist, all of which will always fall intolerably short and deserve to be destroyed. Ultimately, its [feminist] spirit is nihilistic." This should give us cause to question the conviction of righteousness with which its aims are often pursued." Society Against Itself: Political Correctness and Organizational Self-Destruction, p. 48.

    I think there's a possibility that Dr. Karen DiAngelo has some kind of personality disorder.

    What? Did she just say white isn't a race? "I understood somebody has race of course, but not really me" What are white people, Robin? If white people are raised to care black people, how are black people raised to care white people? What is this idiot talking about? And a segregated life isn't racist life for black people? What is this woman talking about? White people can't succumb to hopelessness, is that what Robin just said? And suicide isn't a result of a white persons hopelessness? What is this woman talking about? I'm 12 mins in and so ready to close this tab. I'm guessing Robin doesn't read much. The books behind her are nothing but affectations. She read them by looking at the cover. Most women didn't want the right to vote. That involved being part of the fire brigade. Most democrats didn't want support giving women the right to vote either. The majourity of people who supported giving women the right to vote were male and republicans. If she would actually look into those movements and votes she would know this. Of course, she can't be bothered to look this stuff up because it would tear asunder her delusions of her world, plus she would be taking away from her primary work of grifting about the supposed race issue. She was not raise catholic. If she was raise catholic she would know who god was touching in that mural.

      Yep. But also, it's truly impossible to tell whether this is all in fact part of a long con and everyone's giggling behind the screens or not. I mean could this Ph.D. with not one but TWO Honorary Doctorates really be so ignorant about literally the best known image in the world, Michelangelo's Creation of Adam? "David or something"? I mean, the mind boggles, and Poe's Law remains undefeated.@@TANZIE-20

      You're welcome. Now, what would _really_ be excellent, and go a long, long way in advancing the laudable cause of defeating fragility in all of its insidious forms - one of which is the inability to admit mistakes-, is for Dr. DiAngelo to acknowledge her error regarding the identification of the main human character in Michelangelo's Creation of Adam, who is in fact _not_ David, but - unsurprisingly - is in fact Adam. Following that, she could educate herself - because all of us always can&should get educated about topics we reference - by reading many, many, MANY art-historical analyses of the masterpiece which show its unmistakable connection with Michelangelo's own _G___ identity (to use the current terminology) and progressive humanist leanings, and then in fact start seeing how this artwork, far from being her (misunderstood) nemesis, could in fact become her best friend forever @@notyourordinaryparts
