Top 10 'Spooky' Riffs
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 жов 2023
- 'Creepy', 'atmospheric' and 'dark' are other words you could use to describe these riffs. The kind that send a shiver down your spine. Some of these may be a bit obvious, some maybe you weren't expecting. Whether it's 'hard rock', 'metal', 'post-punk' or 'grunge' it's that kind of playing that seems to have it's roots in the darker side of 60s psychedelic rock.

TUNINGS
All standard tuning except 'South of Heaven' and 'Frogs' (Eb) and 'I Want You' (Drop D)
I Want You is so heavy that all other riffs gravitate towards it's superdense singularity and impact on it's opaque surfaces
I love how it never resolves on the album, and it's a great mirror on that idea here. After CDs and digital merged album sides together, the cut from what had been the end of side one to instantly jump to Here Comes the Sun is good as well, but that needle hitting the end groove with such abruptness was fantastic. My dad had all the mono and stereo versions of The Beatles albums and he shared his love of them with us as we grew up.
These were all cool, but you know it’s not Halloween until you’ve heard Monster Mash 👻
True!
That's more of a Valentine's Day song, in Springfield anyway.
;)
Wasn't their a beach boys cover where Mike Love was dancing? Yeah that's terror.
@@devintariel3769
Now I have to go do a UA-cam search for the Beach Boys doing Monster Mash. 😂
@@devintariel3769
I'm back. And you were right. It was terrifying. Though probably not for the reasons they intended. 😂
I think that 4th of July by Soundgarden would've been a good one. Very underrated song imo.
Applebite was creepy
Aero zeppelin by nirvana was a riff that definitely gave me chills the first time I heard it
I came to the comments to mention paper cuts
Another great band for spooky riffs is Type O Negative - hugely inspired by Black Sabbath and The Beatles.
Always enjoy your videos, great tones as usual!
The first minute keyboard riff in Black Nº1 is absolutely terrifying
@@FedeG13 Proper Halloween feel
Great band, frontman was a bit of a tool though.
@@FortyWinksorry, I'm not English speaker, what does that mean
@@joaquinlezcano2372 an idiot basically
Spellbound by Siouxsie and the Banshees is a classic Halloween riff imo, great list though
Alice in chains frogs is such and underrated song, might be their darkest and very best one, glad to see you give it some love here!
"21st century schizoid man" by King Crimson
that one came to mind. also jimmy on the bow playing dazed and confused live. it always sounds like he is summoning the demons from hell with that scratchy bow with echo and feedback. crazy!
Props for including Floyd's the Narrow Way ..that track crept me out when I first heard it
Should've played Halloween by the Misfits at the end just for the laughs 😂
“The Doors - People Are Strange” is a spooky riff 😨
Nirvana - Big Long Now. Gives me shivers everytime
Holy fuck, how have I never heard of this song before???
I love how you ended I Want You just like they did on the album! haha
Black Sabbath's riff sounds scary even when you listen to it in a low volume. Great selection, Frogs and I Want You were great picks. I've always thought Cross the Breeze by Sonic Youth sound like pure despair until Kim starts singing. It could have made the list. Or anything from Spiderland by Slint. Every song on that album could have been the soundtrack for a horror movie
Thanks for giving some ideas for new riffs to learn! Another Alice in Chains riff I love that sounds really dark is from "What the Hell have I?"
Ah yes I always forget that one!
Glad to see Dark Entries and Frogs on here.
This is so bad ass! I needed to see this
Love that you included Bauhaus!
Metallica’s The Call of Ktulu would have slotted in here nicely - BTW: Great guitar tone!
Floyd's "The Narrow Way" was a pleasant surprise in this video 👍
4th of July - Soundgarden
Good Morning, Captain - Slint
Silver Lights - Coconuts
New Dawn Fades - Joy Division
Micro Cuts - Muse
The Fun Machine Took A Shit And Died - Queens of the Stone Age
Not to Touch the Earth. That’s a good one.
For anyone wanting some tips to get this sound:
1. They're all minor key
2. Frequent use of either the tritone (eg Eb in the key of A minor) or the b6 (F in the key of A minor). Noodling around the fifth (E in the key of A minor) with those notes = SPOOPY
I'd also recommend use of the major 7th note, making the V chord major (e.g. using E major in the key of A minor- while E minor is the technical chord of the natural key). Run your fingers over these notes: E F G# A E (higher octave) Eb
God, I have to learn music theory...
@@markkrousos5011 Learn the patterns of major/minor keys, how chords are built based on that, and common chord progressions. That's all you need for most songwriting stuff
amazing guitar tone, i love it!
Don't Fear the Reaper creeps me more than any of this
Perfect birthday present for me. Thanks for this. I also think another spooky riff is Don't Fear the Reaper
Happy Birthday!
Thank you
I am suitably spooked, good job
i think that black sabbath riff might be the greatest of all time? great vid!!
"Nooooo!! You cant recognise song by just one power chord!!"
Power chord: 0:26
4:40 this Beatles song makes me think that they invented doom metal
Welcome Home Sanitarium is another spooky riff
A Cool idea: play the soundtrack from Wolverine for Sega Genesis, it's essentially 16-bit Black Sabbath
Nice. Killing Joke had some good ones mid-period and The Birthday Party. 'Garden' by The Fall is chilling.
👍
these were so spooky!1!!
Good Morning, Captain by Slint is a spooky favorite for me.
i miss you
you alway have the sickest tones dude
Thanks dude
In addition to the obvious choices - "Black Sabbath," "South of Heaven," "Hell's Bells" - I was stoked to see the Beatles' "She's So Heavy." I remember the first time I heard that song on the radio at an old factory job where I once worked, I thought at first it was an obscure Black Sabbath song that I had somehow missed - despite owning every album they had made with Ozzy Osbourne or Ronnie James Dio.
idk what it is, but "Nosferatu" by Blue Oyster Cult never gets enough love. Super cool spooky song with some great studio effects layered to really sell the effect.
I’ll check that one out. Thanks!
Your vibrato is lovely stuff
Thank you!
Amon Düül II - Between the Eyes
Echo & the Bunnymen - No Dark Things
The Cure - The Top
Neu - Negativland
Siouxie and The Banshees - Voodoo Dolly
01:21 did anyone else hear the Bells (in your head) that aren’t there?!..or did I just confirm me insanity?!?!
The intro riff to Bull in the Heather always creeps me tf out
SY "Protect me you", most of early Nirvana like "Big long now" or (suddenly!) "Clean up before she comes", Tricky "Overcome", Aphex Twin "Curtains", Wojciech Kilar "Vampire hunters" (by the way, many of thriller and horror movies have awesome sinister melodies in their OST, like main theme of "A Nightmare on Elm Street" or "Cape fear"), noise intro in album version "Svoboda" by Grazhdanskay Oborona (first time i listened it in earphones in evening twilights i almost shit my pants i swear))), ending in Pixies's "I bleed", maybe MBV "Lose my breathe" and The Doors "Not to touch the earth" a little, Fuck Buttons "Ribs out", PJ Harvey "The Wind", Carter Burwell "Thugs Passing in the Night", Bobby Krlic "Gassed", Tchaikovsky's "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy", Zvuki Mu "Gadopyatikna", any dark jazz album and many of my own songs)))
You should do top ten Paul Chain riffs. He improvises a lot but I think he’d be down your alley as well as mine
Any thing off bad moon rising by sonic youth is pretty spooky
My timbers have been positively shivered
THE ENDING WOO
Maybe Halloween by samhain or some John Christ riffs
"Love Hate Love" is also a moody one by Alice in Chains
Haunting week awaits🎃
Paper cuts by Nirvana should be in this video
Like, these riffs got that spoooooooky vibe but Paper cuts turns on my fight or flight mechanism
Frogs .. sick spooky tripy
Big Long Now - Nirvana spooky as hell dawwg
I need to learn them all 🕸
Great list, i would put Silverchair untitled (the breakdown riff exactly) and Mailman by soundgarden XD
videos that make you realize how incomplete the black sabbath opening is without bass
One riff on the punkier side that I consider spooky is Totalimmortal. Could just be because it was record for a Halloween ep, but still.
That ad was 15 seconds. thankyou for all that other shit.
Cool list, i might have added Angry Chair instead of Frogs :D
wooooo
You could’ve played Satori Part 1 by Flower Travellin’ Band. I’ve heard people say slayer were inspired by it for south of heaven, and even though I don’t think it’s true they are still quite similar
Frogs is the darkest sounding song…. Cantrell was a master at making a guitar weep.
10 Spooky Sabbath Riffs 😊
Or 10 heaviest Sabbath riffs? Any excuse to play some more Sabbath 😅
Hey man it sounds wierd but im looking for exact this fender cyclone every where and wanted to ask if you would sell it or know someone who sells it 🤘
Well, well.
for me godspeed you! black emperor have spooky and wild song under name Mladic
Do some Corrosion of Conformity riffs.
sweet dreams, Marilyn Mason version for me it is the best
Love You To of The Beatles is also very spooky
had a friend tell me the song Elenore Rigby sounded spooky and it does have a spooky feel to it now that i hear it that way.
Early bauhaus goes hard
I HAD TOO MUCH TO DREAM
would definitely include cirice by ghost
Mayhem - Freezing Moon, easily.
You didn’t do Spooky by Classics IV 😔
Some other songs I’d have included here as well would’ve been Black No. 1 or Christian Woman by Type O Negative or Cirice or Ritual by Ghost (or just about anything from their entire discovery)
Yo Bauhaus dude I feel like you listen to everything I do
Never seen a mustang with a strat bridge, is that a cyclone?
If you make a part 2 add Rx Queen by Deftones
That last was "Heavy".
A forest by the cure
Senser - Oyster
The riff after the first verse ☠️
don, aman - slint
You want to hear scary?
She came in through the bathroom window.
Maxwells Silver Hamer
@@bloxsy_ 'The horror, the horror' 😱😱😱😱😱
helter skelter starts off like a death metal song and death metal wasnt even a thing at that time. unreal@@markbarrett4440
Nice sound. What you using?
Thanks. I’m playing through a boss katana amp
Droning seems to be a thing with those ...
No "Hand of Doom."..?
The Beatles wins the whole show. That is one of the darkest tunes I have ever heard in all my 37 years.
The Sabbath riff is based on an old classical music thing about tri- discord sounds....or something like that? Anyone knows? PS you have a version of Dead Souls that's killer
The sabbath riff was inspired by Holsts the Planets, Mars the bringer of war. The guitarist was trying to play it but didn't quite get it right. Mars is one of the all time great pieces of classical music
@@louiseoc6844Plus the heavy blues sound of bands such as Cream, The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Ten Years After.
No Cramp's, huh?😩
no birthday party?
Yeah I thought that. Rowland.S.Howard. The riff on 'Garden' by The Fall snags me, really spine-tingling.
What guitar is that?
Fender cyclone
Shouldve gone for dead skin mask instead of south of heaven
You should have just cut off I Want You (She's So Heavy) right in the middle of playing it like the original song.
No danzig?????
Tuning?
I've put the tunings in the description box now.
@@bloxsy_ thank u
Segunda parte? I miss halloween -Sonic Youth, Big long now- Nirvana, What the hell i… -Alice in Chains. Bye ✌️
Top guitar player man. Covers Social Distortion?
Since when is dazed & confused spooky?
Since its very inception.
None of those were "spooky" exept the Sabbath riff
Jesus Loves You All
