You can really understand why Denji preferred to die because from his point of view he acomplished everything he wanted to do in life which were normal things that were only a dream for him. Getting to Experience those things was enough for him. And he at least wouldnt die alone. Like he said he knew that there was nothing left for him to live for. Everyone he cared about is dead. And the women who gave him everything is now hunting him down to murder him and rip out his heart and he didnt have the resolve or the stregnth to stop her. Power really was a ride or die person for Denji if it wasnt for her Denji would have been screwed
I know it’s a meme with the “he’s just like me fr fr” panel in the manga but that scene where Denji starts crying over the Tv and has his conversation with Kobeni is one of my top moments
Kobeni serving a hamburger to chainsaw man and dropping it TWICE and then having to dance DDR while crying profusely it's one of (if not) the funniest scene I've ever read in my entire life in manga ever...
The “Gun Devil” Arc is one of the shortest arcs I’ve ever read but has the hardest hitting chapters of anything I’ve ever read. Shit destroyed me the first time I read it.
It honestly hits harder each time I read it. I teared up the first time, cried the second, and now get emotional in even the chapters leading up to it.
the fucking 9 pages dedicated to reading out the death toll of the Gun Devil simply travelling to Makima sent me through the roof, that shit was insane
I recomment checking out Fujimoto’s two one-shots “Look Back” and especially “Goodbye Eri”. His story telling and paneling improved since Chainsaw Man which is insane
The girl that meets Makima at the station and helps Aki get new contracts with new devils after the fox devil stopped wanting to work with Aki Though technically someone stole her skin and was trying to kill Denji
It was heartbreaking that Power Remembered his Birthday when nobody else seemed to, That's what makes that scene more gut wrenching to me. Edit: I know a lot of his friends were dead at the time and he was depressed and his birthday was the day after , but Denji not even remembering means he probably didn't celebrate it, so Power doing that is still crazy.
End of Part 1 could probably just be a troll. The author tends to do stuff like this. Personally, I think that everything that was interesting about the concept has already been done and there's no way a sequel would work being the same thing.
One of my favorite quotes from that last battle between Denji and Makima is (paraphrasing) "Makima, in you perfect world will there be shitty movies?" And I love it, not only it's a reminder of that date they shared, it also shows how Denji now understands that life can't only be made of good things, sometimes bad moments have to happen so the good moments feel even better
This video is gonna be nothing less that pure hype and perfection, seeing Mark read and review this series is really hyping me up for the animes comeback too, I can't wait!
The "giant demon doll girl" was Santaclause. The old man was just another perfect doll. She is in the process of making Tolka into a perfect doll as well.
The anime industry is like a relay race with each next generation enhancing the techniques of the one just gone, improving where they were at fault, whilst doing their utmost to imitate the best parts of what has been done before. Instead; chainsaw man takes the baton, lights it on fire, shoves up its own ***, and blitzes past everyone screaming in pain whilst it crosses the finish line. It’s not good for your mental health, but my god is it something to behold.
@@Anhiksi there's a lot of anime that do things better than hunter x hunter. This is coming from a dude who is a togashi nerd. I love HxH and it's probably the most competent story power structure wise. But I got a lot of love for chainsaw man. I think the narrative is just as painstakingly well thought out as nen
I think what makes Chainsaw Man so different is that the author seems to be more inspired by movies instead of other manga. Mark already touched on this in this video, but reading Chainsaw Man and his other work, you sometimes get the idea that you are watching still scenes from a movie. There are certain panels just begging to be recreated in a set
I’m surprised he didn’t mention the way that devils reincarnate and how they disappear when they are eaten by chainsaw man, or how one of his new goals is to revive power by finding her and killing her in hell
@@IDarkboyI his content has noticably changed since the whole fiasco with Toei animation taking down 150+ of his videos. He now goes out of his way to make sure his videos do not serve as a "substitute for the original work." He doesn't recap/follow the story beats anymore, he provides his "criticism and review" without retelling the story for copyright reasons. Seriously, he literally said it in one of his recent videos. He outright stated "since my videos are only meant as criticism and review and not intended to replace the source material, I'll be skipping over this portion" in one of his vids right after the Toei debacle. Unfortunately I think he's gone too far with it. Because now he's skipping over huge moments in the story that he definitely would have talked about if this were his HxH review last year or anything Dragon ball. It's unfortunate but I get it, some megacorp from across the world looming over you and threatening to destroy your livelihood has got to put a lot of pressure on you to shape your content a certain way
@@luisfelipeguerreroruiz4110 really confused me when mark said denji killed makima but the panel shows denji with a child makima? Im assuming thats the reincarnation
The Family Burger chapter is the absolute funniest chapter of any manga I have ever read. I most recently reread while on a bus and even there I gave an audible chuckle. In a public space! How terrifying.
I think Mark unfortunately missed out on a big part of the entire story's... point..? I suppose? It's really unfortunate because he was SO CLOSE when talking about Denji's growth and relationships. Spoilers ahead, then again this is part 3 so you've finished the story lol. The Devils in the story are all based on the fears of society, of humans all over the planet. Guns, Chainsaws, the passage of time, the Dark, Blood, Bats, etc. But one of the biggest fears that people my age, the age of Tatsuki Fujimoto, is the fear of missing out. The fear of being unable to experience all the wonderful things life has to offer, while it's still appropriate for us to do so. As the series goes on, Denji gets to experience all sorts of amazing feelings, things that people around his age would normally desire to experience, and as the story goes on these desires expand and become more adult as time goes on. In the beginning all he wants is to be a person, something everyone desires, to be acknowledged as a human being and live a life. That turns into the desire to touch boobs, which is quickly stomped by the realization that he lacks the intimacy that makes it enjoyable, and so he wants to feel loved, and to love. And eventually, his fear of missing out, turn into the fear of losing everyone... Which then turns into the desire to simply not care... This is all perfectly encapsulated by the question, "The country mouse, or the city mouse?" Denji's answer is the City mouse. He fears missing out on all the interesting flavors living in the city can come from. It's a perfect analogy. I myself have struggled with these fears, fear of not being able to enjoy my younger years due to things like Covid stealing them from me. I turned 21 during the pandemic, you can imagine my fear during that entire year of not being able to actually go to bars, clubs, and have fun with friends. Denji is essentially, experiencing the same, but rapidly. He's fighting a unique kind of devil, one that he can't kill with his chainsaws. And at the end of part one, we see this come to fruition with his discussion with Pochita, that the only real thing Pochita wanted, was a hug. And a hug, is one of the best forms of intimacy we can share with each other. I'm not quite the best at expressing this kind of thing, but I think that's enough to express my point. I hope this is enlightening to people who have read, but never noticed this sort of thing. Part 2 comes out real soon, get excited!
Time devil…age devil…loss devil? Who will be the scariest? I mean we have some representation with the future devil I suppose. But this gets me thinking since there’s so many powerscaling theories in terms of what devils are at the top and what ones exist period.
@@benzohhhhh Weren't they there at the final fight? Makima mentions their name was eaten by Chainsaw man before, then later she mentions how they lost their name, but they themselves were not erased. Based on Darkness we see in the manga, I'm guessing the rest of the demons at the top are all more esoteric concepts like Entropy or Inevitability. Also the Loss devil is just Tim Buckley? Right?
@@snickey3483 There's many interpretations of the X number of primal fears (usually five), for example the fear of Darkness is actually the fear of the Unknown. But darkness is edgier so I respect Tatsuki's choice there. Anyway, the fear of Abandonment, and the fear of lacking a Purpose tie in well with what you're saying. I don't think the actual word used, like with Darkness vs Unknown, matters too much. As for the "scariest one" for the sake of power scaling, probably depends on Tatski's personal fears.
Makima is literally the Demiurge, the false God in gnostic mythology. This is why the devils working for her have names that follow the angelic heirarchy. Angel, Power, Beam (Cherubim), Prinz (Prinicipality), apparently Galgali can be connected to Throne too!
Thats true, tho she is also (cannonicly) one of the four riders of apocalypse. Specifally conquest (controll-devil is somewhat of a mistranslstion). It is realy going to be interesting what kind of other entities we might get to see, besides devils, and what pochita might have erased
Denji vs The Gun Devil is the first time I've had to keep putting a book down just to take it in. That fight was heartbreaking. I will never be able to look at snowballs the same again
Volume 9 will forever be my favorite, the amount of character building every page of this manga had done up to the gun devil arc had gotten me deeply attached to the trio learning to be a family. As dysfunctional and turbulent my family has always been and the direct abuse and experiences I had gone through in my own life, the amount of trauma and messiness these 3 worked through together while finally seeing eachother as a family who helps and loves eachother just hits me like a truck. every time I've read this arc I have either teared up or broke out into a quiet sobbing fit. The sort of emotions that Fujimoto can fill a volume with as well as Volume 9 is just incredible and tearjerking.
I rarely binge a manga. I binged this story so damn fast. Constantly had my jaw dropping and I just love how sincere the series could get with character moments. It’s one of my favorite series ever. I’m glad you really liked it.
one major thing that will change your perspective if you ever do a reread is that at any point in the manga going all the way back to the beginning is that when Makima is using her powers as the control devil, the text bubbles point to her eyes instead of her mouth and a small thing you'd appreciate is that in the battle between Chainsaw Man and the weapon devils is that one of the pages is paneled so that the lines separating the panels make the SFX kanji for an explosion
As fantastic as the paneling is in Chainsaw Man, its somehow even better in Goodbye Eri. You mentioned that Chainsaw Man sometimes reads like a film storyboard, and this is even more the case in Goodbye Eri, which could honestly probably be animated 1:1 if any studio ever wanted to
Reading CSM weekly was phenomenal., every chapter there was a WTF moment, some funny, some crazy and sometimes a twist, but they always delivered. The introduction arc and Katana Man are pretty good, but Bomb Devil, International Assassin, Gun Devil and Control Devil arcs were mindboggling.
I'm gonna be honest, when i saw that you handle these last 3 arcs in a 'just' 26 min video i was a bit dissapointed.. I feel like there was so much more to talk about in detail to really hit hard on the greater themes of the manga. Still great series of videos as always :)
D u d e, whoever chose "A Stranger I Remain" as the background song during Power's section needs a fucking raise, the lyrics suit her more than they did Mistral, it's an absolutely ON POINT pick, literal chills
I got an astronaut tattoo. favorite panel fr. the panel in chap 79 where denji's looking up with blood dripping off his chainsaw at the gun fiend is a close second.
So thrilled that you liked the manga. I remember reading the series and being impressed, but not really "getting it." And then I read the ending, and everything clicked into place. I'm so psyched to see what the anime does, and I can't wait for more people to get caught up in the chainsaw storm.
One of my favorite moments is the moment where Aki realizes he has no memory or idea why he loves Makima (Iirc It's implied or stated that she used her powers to make him love her). That's the moment I realized the true extent of her villainy and it dawned on me how screwed everyone was. It gets worse when his name shows up in the death tools listed in the Gun Devil's strike. Another moment is when the populace cheers for Denji and gives him their blood to assist him against the Gun Fiend. In any other story this would be a Spiderman 2 moment, but instead its a horrifying moment that shows Makima's manipulations amidst the most traumatic battle of Denji's life.
sharknado was the first csm chapter i read, back when mangastream still existed. the chapter title caught my eye and i was so confused, so i started reading from ch. 1
More like, what if a good writer took a b movie premise and turned into a good story while having fun with the absurdity of the original prompt... I swear, this could be a good writing exercise - take the shittiest movie premise you can find on imdb and try to turn it into something readable lol
Great video albeit personally I wished you pondered more on Makima's profile at the end of the series, like her genuine and almost childish wish of creating a big family by making everyone equal in new world through chainsaw devil, since by being control devil she's unable to form equal relationships with others. Or like the scene when Denji asks her whether there will be bad movies in world of Makima, connecting it to their date when Makima cried seeing two people hugging each other. I understand that she was manipulative with Denji to reach her goal, but she's also a really sad character.
It's really nice seeing people reviewing Chainsaw Man with different perspectives, I love your review of CSM Mark, and I hope you review the 11 other mangas Fujimoto wrote!
This last half of the manga is truly an amazing, action-packed, mind-blowing experience I have read in recent memory. And I'm glad you like it Mark, great video essay as always.
I REALLY enjoyed chainsaw man but what strikes me the most was the introduction of the gun devil. It was grotesque, garish and beautiful. I hate that I love it and love how I hate it. In the end, the Gun Devil being only some brutish devil, with others existing even above him, so ingrained that humans don't really know of them is frightening. Edit: 18:28 notice the picture in the background, it is lucifer falling from heaven and famously the cover art of Paradise Lost.
Decent review as always but Mark man I have to say it feels like you messed up by completely skipping over Kobeni and Denji’s conversation in chapters 92-93. To me that is the most important and defining moment for Denji’s character and to see not even a mention of it was incredibly disappointing. Love your reviews but this felt like a complete oversight. Excited for whatever you decide to cover next!
Same, I feel like he missed a lot of the heart of the story. He missed the fact that Reze was going to meet denji at the diner and run away with him too. And yeah, when kobeni says "but isn't that just normal though?" something clicks in Denji's head. Mark didn't even MENTION the question to Makima about whether she thinks bad movies should still exist in her ideal world. That scene in the graveyard ties in with Makima and Denji crying at the theater at the mediocre movie. He didn't even mention the callback 😭 He also didn't understand that the old man wasn't Santa Claus, he didn't talk about Makima's motivations, he didn't even MENTION the fact that chainsaw man has the ability to erase concepts from reality?? He didn't talk about how Makima was defeated either philosophically or physically... And my man was not nearly as impressed by the darkness devil as I expected :( I have noticed since the fiasco with Toei taking down 150 of his videos, his content has changed. He used to talk a lot more about every story beat, but since the copyright stuff it feels like he's made a strong effort to make sure his videos "do not serve as a substitute or replacement for the original work." In a way he's basically deliberately skipping over things for fear of copyright strikes
@@neumann778 Now yall feel how hxh fans felt when he skipped stuff they found important labeled on thing as a maximum flaw and all the fans cheered that the well-liked series is sooo flawed. He also stated chainsaw man's most liked or so arc was boring at the beginning due to the pacing change to be more basic with exposition. Overall, i think people go in with hype for chainsaw man and once the series starts feeling normal they express how it was annoying etc. Overall the entire story took place in the length of wano arc of one piece. Did we get a story as good as wano, yes, Id say the story is good, but going into supercritical analysis of it will make it less enjoyable since it wont hold up as this world-breaking study on the character of man and life itself or whatever people look for in a masterpiece. It's a rollercoaster with elrich abominations, a world-class in keeping you on your toes, and fulfilling with each chapter. Plus people think the later arcs are where the table is set and you can play with things, thus why people like the later stuff. Cause lets be honest, people hate on jjk for the first 5 eps being normal shonen...but so is chainsawman's first 5 eps worth of content, just more bleak and melancholy.
I do appreciate that as dark and depressing as the Gun Devil / Control Devil Arcs got, in the end, there was still a little bit of hope. Even in the loss of Power, her final act was to make a contract with Denji: find the new incarnation of the Blood Devil, and befriend them once again, understanding that even if her current existence is at an end, she can still live on in whatever new form she takes as long as Denji continues to be himself.
Man, how they did Aki and Power was so heart breaking, not gonna lie. Seeing them fight for the family they so desire to have, just to see it get ripped away from all of them in different ways.
I hope so too! I've been thinking that the reason I liked Chainsaw Man so much is how close it can get to a Dorohedoro-like feeling mainly through it's focus in characters and stuff. Also makes me see Dorohedoro more as a really f*cked up shonen rather than a seinen which is funny.
Glad to know CSM has a new fan in you. This series is feeding the fandom really good this year. Here's me praying that Bleach is your next review series. After all, capitalizing on the hype surrounding the return of the anime is a golden opportunity.
Title was a surprise, didn't get it until this video that this _is_ the entire series so far as short runs like this are rare to me, especially with big, major manga. And holy hell, that "Bang" truly is something that just squeezes the tears out of you. My God
Since you enjoyed this Mark, I highly recommend Dandadan or Jigokuraku. Jigokuraku is finished so it might be ready for a video when youre done but Dandadan is still fairly new. Both are at the same level of explosiveness as Chainsaw man. I'm guessing a part of that is due to both creators being former Fujimoto assistants but they managed to seperate themselves to create something incredible.
I remember following the series from Day 1, and I do agree with you. The fandom, intensity, and randomness of everything definitely was enhanced by reading it weekly. The Darkness devil, the shot with the astronauts, the Reze reveal and her design, the Gun Devil vs Makima, Aki vs Denji, the door symbolism, Power’s remembering his birthday and incredibly sudden death, Denji’s final form, Kobeni and the hamburger, Denji eating Makima, all of it. It became truly incredible.
A series I'd recommend to you Mark is Golden Kamuy. It's a fun and serious action, adventure, comedy series. It just ended so you can read it in its entirety. Another work I'd recommend is Pluto. Urasawa is one of the greatest mystery mangakas and I'd love to see your review on his works.
I picked up chainsaw man during the near ending of its running, and I loved the stories and characters within it. It gave me an appreciation for good story telling and character development that has been absent from a lot of other works I’d read both before and after finishing it.
I think this story is symbolic of an abusive relationship......sometimes you can fall in love with someone who drives you away from your friends and family by cutting you off from them.......they take away your "Power" by manipulating you with "control" disguised as love. They know what makes you tick and they use that as a way to get you to react the way that only benefits them....they don't even "See" you as a person...they just see what you can give them...this story is like being in a relationship with a narcissist. And the reincarnation of the control devil is symbolic of having a kid in that relationship...and making sure that child don't grow up in a similar situation by raising them right...giving them the proper love that the other parent never got...after all that's the reason why the other parent is a narcissist....they never had real love so the manipulate and control others to compensate for the lack of.
The two hunters in the assassin arc also perfectly explained what was going to happen to Denji and Makima. Denji in relation to crafting the ideal doll and Makima in relation to tricking the fox and eating it. There's a bunch of great stuff you can find during a reread which really shows how thoughtful the author was.
I'm so happy that you covered this manga It's the first even manga I've read without coming from an anime it's become one of my favourites, I really can't wait for the anime

Fujimoto, Urasawa, and Inoue are the only mangakas I know of that have made banger after banger. there are many talents like oda or miura who have created one masterpiece. but these 3 made soo many good stories. I have read 4 manga by Fujimoto and they were all great. Imo that makes him the best mangaka because it seems like he never misses. Fire Punch might be my favorite manga of all time

I feel like this review series could have been 2-3 videos longer. Your overall thoughts on the series was good, but you really brushed past a lot of characters like Makima.
The deliveries of my volumes for this lined up almost perfectly with the material covered in each of these review parts, so I had a really interesting loop of reading a few volumes, collecting my thoughts on them and then watching these to hear someone else's perspective and some things I missed the following day. Was a lot of fun overall. Great review of a great story. :)
Lmfao, I just did a search to see if you'd posted your latest Chainsaw man video and see it's been up for 19 minutes, lol. Honestly the manga was so good it was crazy. Just reading it was better then watching most Anime series.
I really hope the anime can adapt the atmosphere that most people feel when reading the manga, like the appearance of the darkness devil (and just hell in general)
The only problem I have with chainsaw man is that it is too good to be experienced in a short span of time. The first I read through the assassins arc it felt messy and confusing. My 2nd and 3rd readthroughs were like reading a completely different story since I was really taking my time and appreciating every moment. Chainsaw mans pacing is simultaneously one of my favourite parts of it but also happens to be its biggest downfall.
At 13:00 , this wholes bit is my favourite part of chainsaw man... the build up and panelling is AMAZING ive nvr had a part in a manga have me re read it cos it was so damm gud
From an action and world-building perspective maybe, but like totally not mark was saying, the characters especially the main cast aren’t really given anything to do there.
@@ZZPikachu Yeah I would agree that main cast takes backstage, but what it offers in form of expanding the world, introducing 20 new characters in 18 chapters alongside amazing paneling, makes it feel like a tarantino esque arc with an amazing climax where everything collides perfectly. Even after that it also has some of my favorite depiction of these different ideas of I have seen not only in this manga but entirety of media.
I just love the point when during the end the true chainsaw devil goes to get a Burger. How can anyone make such funny and gruesom scene that still doesent really break the Flow of the story just baffles me.
Reading the assassin arc week by week was some of the craziest shit I’ve ever experienced on weekly Shonen Jump. And the rest of early Chainsaw Man was taking me for a loop every week too. The way Fujimoto gives zero fucks about where he wants to take his stories. I was worried about cancellation multiple times, like he was wrapping up the story because he’d taken it too far. I’m so used to mangaka trying to establish a status quo but Fujimoto is ripping up the script every fifteen chapters.
Thanks for Reviewing this, This one made me cry as you reminded me the importance of a ton of scenes and hopefully your reviews help it gain more fans (Even though there are a ton) I would hate for the anime to not get a second season. Also I recommend Hell's Paradise and I guess Jujutsu Kaisen as well They are all being animated by Mappa (Or going to) like Chainsawman. They are being regarded by the fanbase as Mappa's "Dark Trio" and funny enough those three are my top three series. If you like Chainsawman I recommend them ESPECIALLY Hell's Paradise.
Read part one of in 3 days, and Denji's journey through responsibility literally saved my life. I relate to his journey of finding purpose, and coming to terms with responsibilities, and empathy so much. It feeling like my life journey just told in a more visceral way.
Well done reviewing the Chainsaw Man series. But I'd also like to take a moment to say that the editors and art department have been doing amazing work! The Chainsaw Man thumbnails especially are super catchy!

you can’t have any concept of good without badly. it’s like having up without having down. it’s not possible.
You wanna know the best bit about that; that aint even denji that said it to Makima. That was pochita
This video is gonna be nothing less that pure hype and perfection, seeing Mark read and review this series is really hyping me up for the animes comeback too, I can't wait!
Comeback?
When did the 1st season come out?
The "giant demon doll girl" was Santaclause. The old man was just another perfect doll. She is in the process of making Tolka into a perfect doll as well.
The anime industry is like a relay race with each next generation enhancing the techniques of the one just gone, improving where they were at fault, whilst doing their utmost to imitate the best parts of what has been done before. Instead; chainsaw man takes the baton, lights it on fire, shoves up its own ***, and blitzes past everyone screaming in pain whilst it crosses the finish line. It’s not good for your mental health, but my god is it something to behold.
still waiting for an anime to surpass hunter x hunter.
@@Anhiksi there's a lot of anime that do things better than hunter x hunter. This is coming from a dude who is a togashi nerd. I love HxH and it's probably the most competent story power structure wise. But I got a lot of love for chainsaw man. I think the narrative is just as painstakingly well thought out as nen
this comment is just genius
Fujimoto knows how to light people on fire yes
I think what makes Chainsaw Man so different is that the author seems to be more inspired by movies instead of other manga. Mark already touched on this in this video, but reading Chainsaw Man and his other work, you sometimes get the idea that you are watching still scenes from a movie. There are certain panels just begging to be recreated in a set
I’m surprised he didn’t mention the way that devils reincarnate and how they disappear when they are eaten by chainsaw man, or how one of his new goals is to revive power by finding her and killing her in hell
yeah, honestly kinda weird. He literally did not talk about what the show is called

Even in my second time reading Chainsaw Man, the last part with Aki always feels so heartbreaking. Almost brings me to tears
The Family Burger chapter is the absolute funniest chapter of any manga I have ever read. I most recently reread while on a bus and even there I gave an audible chuckle. In a public space! How terrifying.
I entirely disagree. The repeat of the Family Burger chant paired with that single panel of the decapitated head of Kobeni's brother was harrowing
@@Bighomie39 kobeni’s brother?

This is all perfectly encapsulated by the question, "The country mouse, or the city mouse?"
Denji's answer is the City mouse.
Damn Bro, that's actually really well stated, thanks for sharing this, I never realised it, so I appreciate it
Time devil…age devil…loss devil?
Who will be the scariest? I mean we have some representation with the future devil I suppose. But this gets me thinking since there’s so many powerscaling theories in terms of what devils are at the top and what ones exist period.
@@snickey3483 the 4 horseman of the apocalypse or whatever the hell they were called in the manga. War, hunger, death, control
Holy sh# I didn't even know this.
#TheMoreYouKnow
Thats true, tho she is also (cannonicly) one of the four riders of apocalypse. Specifally conquest (controll-devil is somewhat of a mistranslstion).
It is realy going to be interesting what kind of other entities we might get to see, besides devils, and what pochita might have erased
chainsaw man is like Jujutsu kaisen mixed with devilman crybaby
Fuck I noticed the others but I totally spaced out on beam being cherubim, that's awesome
That's really interesting but those Devil's were Chainsaw Man's followers, not Makima's
The day the Aki vs Denji fight is doing to be animated, the internet will go mad!
I’m glad you really liked it.
one major thing that will change your perspective if you ever do a reread is that at any point in the manga going all the way back to the beginning is that when Makima is using her powers as the control devil, the text bubbles point to her eyes instead of her mouth
and a small thing you'd appreciate is that in the battle between Chainsaw Man and the weapon devils is that one of the pages is paneled so that the lines separating the panels make the SFX kanji for an explosion
As fantastic as the paneling is in Chainsaw Man, its somehow even better in Goodbye Eri. You mentioned that Chainsaw Man sometimes reads like a film storyboard, and this is even more the case in Goodbye Eri, which could honestly probably be animated 1:1 if any studio ever wanted to
Yea I was gonna say the same, it's LITERALLY formatted like a film reel
Goodbye Eri is Fujimoto's true masterpiece

He didn't even mention the fact that one of the assassin groups is introduced via lesbian orgy
Yeah there is much more to dissect about Makima's character in this final arc. And many other things.
No mention of eating concepts either

I got an astronaut tattoo. favorite panel fr. the panel in chap 79 where denji's looking up with blood dripping off his chainsaw at the gun fiend is a close second.
I can't wait to see Denji vs Aki adapted, wish I had a time machine to see it
I want to see people's reactions to the Darkness Devil. Everyone is a badass until the astronauts start praying to their legs.
Chainsaw man is the highest quality B movie there is to exist. Its like if sharknado had realistic character development and top tier cgi.
And a good plot.
Or if a B movie plot was directed by Steven Spielberg
sharknado was the first csm chapter i read, back when mangastream still existed. the chapter title caught my eye and i was so confused, so i started reading from ch. 1
I'm pretty sure your using b-movie incorrectly. Having genre and exploration elements doesn't always make something a b movie
More like, what if a good writer took a b movie premise and turned into a good story while having fun with the absurdity of the original prompt... I swear, this could be a good writing exercise - take the shittiest movie premise you can find on imdb and try to turn it into something readable lol
"I finished reading Chainsaw Man"
Fujimoto: Now do it again
Great video albeit personally I wished you pondered more on Makima's profile at the end of the series, like her genuine and almost childish wish of creating a big family by making everyone equal in new world through chainsaw devil, since by being control devil she's unable to form equal relationships with others. Or like the scene when Denji asks her whether there will be bad movies in world of Makima, connecting it to their date when Makima cried seeing two people hugging each other. I understand that she was manipulative with Denji to reach her goal, but she's also a really sad character.

I literally spat out my drink when I saw that.
It's really nice seeing people reviewing Chainsaw Man with different perspectives, I love your review of CSM Mark, and I hope you review the 11 other mangas Fujimoto wrote!
I like the subtle touch of adding Mistral's theme when Mark was talking about Power
This last half of the manga is truly an amazing, action-packed, mind-blowing experience I have read in recent memory. And I'm glad you like it Mark, great video essay as always.
When They animate all of this I will ball my eyes out like a man!!
Cant wait for part 2 to release in summer
I REALLY enjoyed chainsaw man but what strikes me the most was the introduction of the gun devil. It was grotesque, garish and beautiful. I hate that I love it and love how I hate it. In the end, the Gun Devil being only some brutish devil, with others existing even above him, so ingrained that humans don't really know of them is frightening.
Edit: 18:28 notice the picture in the background, it is lucifer falling from heaven and famously the cover art of Paradise Lost.
Nice catch! That's a fantastic detail!
He didn't even mention the callback 😭
He also didn't understand that the old man wasn't Santa Claus, he didn't talk about Makima's motivations, he didn't even MENTION the fact that chainsaw man has the ability to erase concepts from reality?? He didn't talk about how Makima was defeated either philosophically or physically...
And my man was not nearly as impressed by the darkness devil as I expected :(
I have noticed since the fiasco with Toei taking down 150 of his videos, his content has changed. He used to talk a lot more about every story beat, but since the copyright stuff it feels like he's made a strong effort to make sure his videos "do not serve as a substitute or replacement for the original work." In a way he's basically deliberately skipping over things for fear of copyright strikes
Maybe it's my bias for loving csm more than any other series he's reviewed so far but yeah, this didn't feel as in depth as mark's previous stuff
@@neumann778 You're not being biased, you're right. He skipped and glossed over a lot of the crucial and more defining parts of the series.

The Drakengard music in this video is just *chef's kiss* too good.
Hey Mr editor youre a god for using such a banger as "a stranger i remain" for powers comeback

The series isn’t over, I’m excited for the next reviews after the hiatus ends and after those arcs end.
Fuck yeah jigokuraku dope. Dont see him reviewing it though cause its not popular
On that note, 20th Century Boys and Monster are also god-tier Urasawa works he could read.
I picked up chainsaw man during the near ending of its running, and I loved the stories and characters within it. It gave me an appreciation for good story telling and character development that has been absent from a lot of other works I’d read both before and after finishing it.

Chainsaw Man is a masterpiece. The anime WILL change what type of anime and manga we'll be getting in the future.
That lesbian orgy scene/spreadsheet in Shonen Jump WAS AND STILL IS WILD
International assassins arc is way better on reread cause u actually understand what the fuck is going on
Read part one of in 3 days, and Denji's journey through responsibility literally saved my life.
