Its not new in the shounen sense. But i really enjoy mangas that doesn't give the hero the satisfaction of victory! I dun think many do but personally i like dread in my manga nowadays :D
Important thing to note: Devils using their powers pop out of the page, to suggest that the powers of devils are not grounded in the reality of the world. Also Denji's a hybrid not a fiend. He's something entirely different.
To me this manga best represents the phrase "Gets progressively better as it continues going" which is saying a lot because the beginning volumes are amazing
Chainsaw Man is definitely one of the best manga from Shonen Jump. One of the few I'd consider a masterpiece. Fujimoto is such a brilliant artist. I never cared much for stuff like paneling and dialogue but he genuinely made them so interesting. An underrated aspect of the story is that it avoids the problem of power escalation entirely. The opponents that Denji faces have ungodly amounts of power but he usually can't just enter a training arc and defeat them by punching harder.
@@chululu7657 It's good because of the characters and how chaotic and easy to read the story is. There's scenes of the characters just chilling, which is in contrast to the part where he rides a shark into a tornado. There's nothing else like it

Chainsawman is one of my favourite shonen manga, but honestly, Look Back and Goodbye Eri are two of my favourite manga period. Their intricate emotional layers and brilliant narratives create stories that brought me more feelings with only one chapter than entire runs with hundred of chapters.
it's also an excellent example of how the panelwork really conveys the pace of a moment. sometimes there's just 4 pages of basically the same thing, really slowing down and giving a moment to relax. I found it a bit weird at first, but it does wonders at conveying emotions that can't be done easily in manga.
Chainsaw man really is something. Chain saw man means so much to me, it came during a time for me when i was depressed. I felt useless and needing something to take my mind of the scary covid stuff and Quarantine time during 2020. This manga means so much to me. I cant wait for the continuation of its story in part 2 and the airing of the anime
I just read all 97 chapters in one sitting to watch this video without getting spoiled, and I gotta say, so worth the time. Beautiful story and a beautiful video depiction. That hell scene was HORRIFYING even viewing on a page. I’ve also never laughed so hard reading a manga.
Chainsawman hits different. I highly recommend reading the manga before the anime. It will only make you more hyped for the animation. It’s a wild ride of misery, joy, gore and love.
I think the reason I love Chainsawman so much is that it is written by and for someone like me. Someone who has watched endless hours of anime, hundreds of movies, and countless manga. And Chainsawman finally gives me something that I don't see coming. Instead of being able to guess the plot from the first chapter, I end every chapter genuinely wondering what will happen next.
Chainsaw man is my favourite manga and you are my favourite UA-camr waking up to this video is literally a dream come true. Everything you liked so far only gets better throughout the series.
Chainsaw man is a great series to read twice because of how strong the themes are and how the start and end really tie back on each other. I'd strongly recommend that to anybody.

Yay! Finally! I told you to do this one during your early One Piece read through. Glad to see you getting to it and enjoying. Just wait it gets so much better.
You described why I love this series so much, perfectly. Fujimoto writes such human characters that you can easily relate to. It really makes the story so much more enjoyable as you see parts of yourself in these characters and the lessons they learn throughout the story. It really just puts life into perspective as you can relate to the struggles some of these characters are going through.
I compared this story a lot to Devilman Crybaby. It is easily one of my most favorite mangas of all time, and I was super excited when you announced you were covering it. I can't wait to see the rest of the story covered by you.
Go Nagai’s works are all seminal masterpieces Devilman, Cutie Honey, Violence Jack, they’re all amazing. Still the *most* legendary work he made was Mazinger Z which created an entire genre

Just saw the first two episodes! And so far, they've done a really good job setting up people's personalities and keeping true to the manga! _Granted, some humor is better in the panels of the manga only because the panels themselves lack a time/movement gap in physical gags_ But it's starting out strong, and I do implore you to do a manga/anime comparison once more comes out Also to anyone reading this comment, I hope you have a good day!
2:56 Denji is specifically a hybrid, not a fiend. A fiend is when a devil takes over a dead humans body, think the fiend eating the bird. But later on you'll see more hybrids(really three since the others just randomly appear), but yeah Denji is not a fiend, he is a hybrid.
27:53 Bro your editor’s music choice is on point, first the MGS2 theme during the boob moment and then the FF8 boss music? Bro is taking me on a trip through my childhood with each video wtf
I'm glad you started covering this. I've been on it since early in the manga. And, read issue to issue until the end of part 1. Its definitely a breath of fresh air. And, you can tell because of the immense popularity it has garnished without any animation. Another good one if you get around to it. Is Kaiju No. 8. It has heavy A.O.T. vibes. While at the same time delivering something entirely different. And, it has garnished worldwide popularity already and only recently got confirmed for an anime.
Alright, so, my first time commenting under one of your videos, but as someone who loves this story and considers this one of my favorite stories ever, I have to say I am quite surprised, and happy, at seeing how much you were able to pick up on just your first readthrough of this series, and this early on as well! Cause it took me a second and third readthrough to really get at all the strengths on display here! And with how much you're loving the humor, how surprising the turn of events can be as well as how well Fujimoto uses it to convey the impact of certain scenes and the general themes of the manga, I'm just gonna be eating my popcorn from the back as I watch you delve further into the weird, beautiful, brilliant and chaotic mess that is Chainsaw Man!
I absolutely adore Tatsuki Fujimoto's work. Of all the manga I've read I've never been able to perceive so much about the author as a person as I can with Fujimoto. His love of television and movies comes across so clearly, you can tell exactly how fundamental that love is to how he writes and produces. It's about as subtle as a chainsaw but there's something so pure and honest about that inspiration being so obvious, to the point where it doesn't even qualify as subtext. As if Chainsaw Man being inspired by The Texas Chainsaw Massacre wasn't obvious enough, it's even more front and center in his previous serialized work Fire Punch, which I consider not only decidedly stronger as a whole than Chainsaw Man, but one of the best manga I've ever read. The way Fujimoto writes people, with all of their problems and contradictions, is nothing short of sublime.
I love that you are enjoying Chainsaw, it's truly an emotional experience through and through. Hope you don't get spoiled along the way! (Also that has to be the best G-fuel ad I've ever seen)
NO SPOILER: This prompts me to subscribe immediately to you right now. I've nevet been able to explain so eloquently why I like this story so much, so this was a treat for me to find the same elements that I've been juggling in my head about the story be listed down so well. Also, I recommend Fire Punch 100%, I read it before Chainsaw Man to hype myself up for the author and for a long while I held it in higher regard than CSM itself (until certain stuff happened in the CSM manga that intrigued me to no ends) so I personally think that it's worth as much attention as any work Fujimoto put out. Waiting for your next impressions fam xD
Chainsaw man really is one of my favorite series of all time, the story flows so damn well and is perfect for rereads. Its one of the only stories I've read more than 3 times and there are still concepts and parts of this story that I don't full understand but fill me with tons of emotions and thoughts on what the fuck just happened. Also the paneling, dialogue, flow of action and insane page turn twists are near perfection for a manga.
Chainsaw Man shot to my favorite manga spot in seconds as soon as I read the manga. A lack of insane exposition, text and thought bubbles combined with the kinetic and fast paced action, gorific scenes and amazing art gave me the rush I've only felt from my favorite movies and games. This manga made me feel like heaven and I am crying.
Impressions wise the very first time I heard of Chainsaw Man, it seemed like bloody ridiculousness. I mean, come on, it’s called Chainsaw Man, the main character has chainsaws sticking out of his head and arms and a demon dog that has a chainsaw as well. Now knowing more about the story from this video, while I don’t know if it’s enough for me to check out the manga, I most certainly will check out the anime.
Even if the anime is an absolute 10/10 jaw dropping adaptation, Fugimoto uses the formatting of manga in such a unique way that it’s impossible to fully convey those panels to an anime. It’s so good. If you want a taste test Viz has the first three chapters available for free, and if you want to read their entire catalogue it’s just $4 a month.
Oh sweetie, the episode is still in the typical shonen fase. Shit gets progressively wild and deep. It will be worth it; took me maybe a day only to devour the series as is.
I was reading Chainsaw man as it was coming out back in the day. Tried recommending it to everyone and no one cared, friends saw trailer and now are reading. I’m just glad it’s getting the damn recognition it deserves!!
I absolutely LOVE hearing you talk about your theories for what happens in the future of the manga I cannot wait to see your reactions to the later chapters
Nah Mark. I completely agree with you. This manga is something else, something very different and fresh. It's a manga that tackles stuff differently. And I love it. The pure insanity, the pure weirdness, the pure horror and action, and the pure human feeling of this manga. I really don't know how Tatsuki Fujimoto mixed all of this together, and using them to his advantage in his manga. AND PERFECTLY!! And this man might be young, but he KNOWS how to draw. Every single panel of Chainsaw Man is something to behold. I can't wait to see you tackle on the next arcs. Oh man. I'm excited!! I really had the same feeling you had. Fujimoto really somehow gets hooked into this manga and never off it for a second. You wanna read more and more with each damn chapter you read. Man, I love this manga. And I am so glad you're having a great experience reading the start of this Insane Manga!! Cya on the next video Mark. And always thank you for making this and great job to you and Editor-San!! Hopefully you're not already overrun w/ manga suggestions, but one that I got to know better after I got introduced to the anime was dorohedoro - best part is definitely it's world building and that it is actually finished. Quite the weird world, but sucks one in right away!
The artstyle of Chainsaw Man is really fascinating to me, the contrast of extremely simple looking characters and the hyper detailed backgrounds makes for a great artistic contrast
I don't think I can say anything I want to without spoiling this amazing series. Mark's ability to pick out thematic through lines before they're really relevant is enviable.
this video rocks! I just checked out chainsaw man last month and ended up reading the whole thing in a weekend lol. my first full manga ever, too! I am so hyped for the anime and part 2 but now I'm also hyped for more of your thoughts on the series
My favorite quote in all of chainsaw man, that has been applicable multiple times in my life since my first reading, is when he's talking to Makima after touching Power's boobs and he says "I finally got my hands on something I'd been chasing all this time. It was nowhere near as great as I thought it would be. And now it's like ... when I have a different goal, when I finally reach it, am I gonna think that it was better when I was still just chasing after it?" This is when I knew that Chainsaw Man was a LOT more than I gave it credit upon initial reading. I love this quote.
Chainsawman was the first manga I read as it released from chapter 1, and the greatest part of it to me was that at no point did I feel like I HAD to go back to earlier chapters to remind myself of a character or plot line. The way the story progresses and the characters develop is such a joy. Doing a re-read with you is bringing all these feelings right back.

Lol

yo mark you should also read "Goodbye Eri" by the same author. its a 200 page one-shot and I rly think you will enjoy it
it's also an excellent example of how the panelwork really conveys the pace of a moment. sometimes there's just 4 pages of basically the same thing, really slowing down and giving a moment to relax. I found it a bit weird at first, but it does wonders at conveying emotions that can't be done easily in manga.

Mark’s analysis on Makima is SO spot on, especially when you consider reveals about her later on in the series.

Chainsaw man is awesome, it has that gritty art style kind of like Dorohedoro and I love how insane it is. Completely off the walls

So true
Its definitely worth checking out the manga too. Fujimoto is an absolute master of manga as a format
Even if the anime is an absolute 10/10 jaw dropping adaptation, Fugimoto uses the formatting of manga in such a unique way that it’s impossible to fully convey those panels to an anime. It’s so good.

Chainsawman was the first manga I read as it released from chapter 1, and the greatest part of it to me was that at no point did I feel like I HAD to go back to earlier chapters to remind myself of a character or plot line.
