do you guys ever want to try the ghetto continuous trans flush method? 1. disconnect both trans cooling tubes to radiator 2. place the outbound from the trans hose into a drain catch pan.....3. Connect a long funnel with clear tube held in place on top of the engine to the intake hose to the transmission...use hose clamps and duct tape to hold everything in place.. 4. Pour some fresh nissan matic s into the funnel: 1 quart..5. run engine and run through all the gears...of course with the brakes on...6. let 1 quart of dirty fluid drain into catch pan.....7. stop engine.....goto step 4 and repeat steps 4 through 7 till fluid coming out is clean? . I don't believe this is necessary as per OEM instructions but some people want to be thorough.
Thanks Mike, good videos for this transmission type aren't real EZ to come by and you did a nice job showing all this that Nissan doesn't want us to easily know :)
It would have been great to see you actually add in the new fluid to see exactly how you achieved that. How much residual fluid remained in the pressure applicator tube. Did you have other fluid in that pump before? How did you clean it before using it for this job? Is it good for other uses now?
In most cases when a manufacturer changes their transmission fluid it covers the old fluid specs and added to it. Example Mercon 3 was replaced with Mercon V and covers most older vehicles. But sometimes you can’t use the new stuff in older vehicles. I would check forums on your vehicle and call the dealership. Hope that helps
You can if you remove the dipstick holder and insert a small tube. Transmission fill specification is based on volumetric measure at around 40C and the fill tube measure overflows at the required level.
You have to use a pump to pump it into the fill hole. I think the hand pump that Walmart sells to fill the lower gear case on outboard boat engines will work and they cost less than $10. There is a tube inside the pan that is the correct level for the fluid. So, pump fluid into the fill connection until it runs back out. You need to run the engine and move the trans shifter through all the gears before draining the fluid until it stops flowing. The engine has to be running when you do the final drain to check the level. Amazon sells an adapter that fits the fill hole that a hose can be connected to. Search Infiniti 7 speed fill adapter. I'm assuming your trans is a 7 speed.
the dealer does sell the gasket, only thing you cant get is the OEM filter. The G37 has the same filter and gasket, autozone sell a filter and a gasket kit.
Only way would be to disconnect the lines from your transmission cooler (radiator) and modify a way to catch the fluid coming from transmission into a catch pail and setup some type of funnel system to add fluid as its being removed. There is no other way with how the transmission is designed to do it.
Dmitry car is not running when filling pan. You fill initially and run for 30 sec to a minute run it through gears at least 2x then turn of and top off.
How do you know the fluid is at the correct level? Do you just wait until the fluid starts to weep out of the filler plug? Is this done when the vehicle is at temperature? Thanks in advance and stay safe.
How bad was the fluid when it came out of your transmission? How many kms or miles did you have when changing the transmission fluid? Maybe it was too contaminated and already damaged the transmission, so the fresh fluid just makes the problem worse.
I have a 04 Nissan Armada LE 4x4 with 70000 miles. Under the hood the sticker says only use J fluid. Wondering if you know if Nissan changed to the s fluid because they were having problems with these Transmissions? I have no idea what to use. Like I said, We have the first year of the Armada.
According to Nissan. Matic-s fluid supersedes matic-j fluid. The difference between S and J is that matic s is full synthetic with additional friction modifiers and detergents. While matic J lacked the friction modifiers. In the Newer model Titans from 2011 on up. It says you can substitute matic-j if you cannot find or use matic-s. Valvoline makes a universal fluid that suits both matic J and matic-s which means it probably more superior to matic-s genuine Nissan as it also meets a plethora of conditions for other make model transmissions.
Do you have to wait till the correct temperature before checking to see if the fluid level is corrrect...ie...wait till it gets 10x F degrees....open fill plug....if its just weeping out...your good....or does running the car for 10 minutes achieve the correct temperature.... Also can someone post where you can get the original OEM filter and gasket for this transmission?
I was able to get 4.5 Quarts out of the drain plug. However, after pumping about 3.5 quarts in the fill plug fluid gushes out. Should I keep pumping until I get 4.5 in there and quickly screw in the fill plug?
Thomas Merriam you need to turn the truck on after putting in the 3.5 qts put the emergency brake on and run the gear selector through the gears 2x. Then shut off the truck. Now the remaining fluid will fit. Hope that helps.
@@mikesmachines9394 I think T Merriam may have a newer 7 speed auto like my 2015. Did mine this evening, and I got 5.5 qts out of the drain plug. When refilling, I only got about 3.5qts in. I out the brake on, shifted through several times, and still could not get it to hold more. So, I took it on a short and gentle 2 mile drive and shifted through all the gears (1 - 5) manually I could in city street speeds and let the auto do some shifting. That allowed me to get the additional 2 qts in. After first filling then shifting through the gears, if your awd, abs, and vdc, lights on the dash are on, it's detecting you're still low. If you have already replaced 3 of the 5.5 qts, it should not do that - once the tranny moves that fluid around enough, 3 qts you just added will turn those dash lights off, and this also means you've created space for the next 2 qts.
I believe the temperature of the trans fluid should be around 95 to 113 degrees F. I'm wondering if running the truck in idle for 10 minutes would achieve that temperature. If you have those Wireless OBD devices you could probably search see the trans temperature. I think the least reliable way is to use an infrared temperature gun pointed at the oil pan which imperfectly reflects the real temperature of the fluid.. I.e. uneven temperature convection transfer.. Maybe take an average of the temp reading using the infrared gun on 5 different spots on the trans pan after idling for 10 min
Great video, thanks! How's the seal with the silicon/reusing the old gasket holding up? Also, think if you stay on top of a new Armada/QX80, and just do the drain/fill without dropping the pan, could keep the fluid clean up until say 100k when you would drop pan/clean the magnets? Keep up the solid videos!
I change it every time I do an oil change. You can’t get all of it out, the torque converter is sealed on these vehicles. So 4 quarts at a time each time I service the SUV
Here is the wording from the service manual "(2) Automatic transmission fluid is maintenance-free.". Maybe that's why they don't sell gasket etc. Not if I need to stick to service manual or change the Trans fluid?
Check out the forums on the QX56. Many examples of people servicing themselves or having dealer do it. The fluid needs to be changed. It is a wear item like any oil/fluid on a vehicle.
There is no way to drain it completely doing it yourself. Only the dealer can pump through the transmission with a special machine. You can only change out 4 quarts at a time.
@@mikesmachines9394 Is that called a flush? I have a 2017 Armada that has 160K on it. It needs changing butthe dealership and local transmission people say they won't do it. Can they change out the ALL of old stuff with new fluid without flushing it?

Less than 5 litres just in the pan alone, excluding what is in the torque converter and cooling lines. Total fluid capacity is around 10 litres but you can't get it out easily without disconnecting one of the cooling hoses.

What happens if you use just an off-the-shelf transmission fluid, say the cheapo for Fords at AutoZone?
It's your transmission. Tell us how it works out.
You can buy trans fluid that meets the Nissan spec without going to the dealer.
Why can’t you just fill the transmission from the top?
Just put back in what you took out?
