    Hi Alisha! I am from Rio de Janeiro and did not understand the second case of literal literally..could you please explain?

    • @LearnAcademicEnglish
      @LearnAcademicEnglish 3 роки тому +1

      In English we have the words "figuratively" and "literally," which are opposites. In the second example that Alisha explains, she is showing this use of literally, which emphasizes that someone wants to express the literal, not figurative, meaning of something. We have a lot of idioms that express a figurative meaning (kick the bucket, bend over backwards, etc.). These have a special meaning that is not literal. For example, if you say that something is a pain in the neck, you mean that something is difficult, not really a pain in your neck. That is a figurative (idiomatic) meaning. However, if you really do have a pain in your neck, you might add the word "literally" to show that you are not expressing the figurative meaning. That is tricky--I hope that helps!

    In the two sentences: I haven't heard anything from you in a while/I haven't heard anything from you for a while there is no difference in meaning, especially for an American I think. British speakers would probably use 'for' but would understand both
