I have very dear memories of Diablo 1. When I was about 10 my sister used to work at a PC repair shop, and one day she brought a computer case that wasn't working very well. In my curiosity and childish playfulness I opened the CD drive and Lo and behold a Diablo 1 original CD was there. I didn't know what the hell it was, but I sure felt the need to put it in my own PC and see what it was. I almost shat my pants when I saw the picture of that demon in the installing screen, it really scared me. After I installed the game I didn't believe my eyes nor my ears. The music, the atmosphere, everything was amazing! I had played Commandos, Heroes 3, Warcraft 2, and Call of Duty, but nothing like that, nothing so bleak, no RPGs. Suffice to say, I fell in love with it. One of my favorite video games to this day. This song still haunts me a little.

I am a 45 yo father, probably one of the oldest people playing this game. I am a single father to my son, who is 14 now. My son got this game for Christmas in 2021 from his uncle, so we installed it on his computer and he started playing. By the end of the week he had 24 hours on this game. This was horrible for me, as it was already hard for me to find ways to spend time with my son, as he is always out with his friends or just watching UA-cam. So i decided to get this game to see if I could maybe play alongside him. I loaded into the game, picked my character and world and started playing but I was stuck on what you where supposed to do. I asked my son for help and he hosted a game for me to join. I loved it as it was the best time I had spent with my son since my wife had died. This game has ever since brought me and my son closer again and now we actually spend time together outside the house together as well. This game reminded me that there's fun to be had in everything, and it has brought both me and my Son many happy memories.

"Thank goodness you've returned! Much has changed since you lived here, my friend. All was peaceful until the Dark Riders came and destroyed our village. Many were cut down where they stood, and those who took up arms were slain or dragged away to become slaves or worse. The church at the edge of town has been desecrated and is being used for dark rituals. The screams that echo in the night are inhuman, but some of our townsfolk may yet survive. Follow the path that lies between my tavern and the blacksmith shop to find the church and save who you can. Perhaps I can tell you more if we speak again. Good luck!"

I remember getting my PC Gamer magazine back in the mid-90's and they were showing cut scenes from an upcoming game called Diablo. At the time first person shooters like Quake and Hexen were the rage, so I said that this 3rd person perspective game was doomed to fail. Boy was I ever wrong! When Diablo was released, it took over my life. I think that's why my wife at the time left me.

I remember diablo's release being pushed back 14 months back when it came out and then after buying it had to wait almost a year for an upgrade to be able to play it. When I did, I was forever lost in its world. The music is such a defining element of the game and of my young adulthood. Such memories.

I have to wonder if Tristram was inspired by an actual little town. It has its small plot of farming land, a few rivers and streams that crisscross it, its smithy, a village elder, a hermit's shack way off to the side, and even its own little humbly constructed church(which certainly stands out from a gameplay standpoint as "the place to go" with its stony frame and red hot glow). And then some wily game designer said: "Why not create a gigantic underworld beneath it that belies such self-sufficient humility and humanity?"

    • @emissarygw2264
      @emissarygw2264 Рік тому +2

Man I really miss that. The idea of descending into a church that's been corrupted and turned into an annex of hell. D2 and D3 just don't capture that feeling... like, "please go out to the wilderness and fight some midgets in a cave" just doesn't hit the same as walking into the basement of a demonically infested church that's glowing with eerie red light and then getting ambushed by skeletons and zombies popping out of coffins. Sure D2 was a technically superior game, but damn D1 really nailed the atmosphere.

There's some aspects of the games that were actually inspired by real events and people so I could see that being plausible that it's based on a real town.
The countess quest for example in Diablo 2 is based off the "Blood Countess of Slovakia", from the Čachtice castle.

Tenho a caixa e o CD do jogo até hoje guardado comigo, simplesmente nunca consegui me desfazer dele. Ficava horas madrugada adentro jogando, totalmente imerso neste mundo. Lembro até hoje meu primeiro encontro com o Butcher e claro, ele me cortou em pedaços. Eu tinha um medo real de enfrenta-lo e nunca foi fácil! I imagine deep into an old forgoten forest at a very dark night you can feel the fresh air through your lungs as well as the wet fallen leaves under your feet, you are surrounded by a forest of branches... every shape around looks as a dark shade because it is a night with no moon, the smell of charred wood appears occasionally mixing with the environment... your heart suddenly bumps abruptly you get that feeling of cold skin and at same time you feel the warm of your very own blood going all over your body

D2 improved upon things, but at the cost of others. In D2, one doesn't scour every corner of the map, on the contrary, it's mostly trying to get through to the bosses as quickly as possible (especially Act 3).

On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim, I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway, I heard the mission bell
And I was thinkin' to myself, "This could be heaven or this could be hell"
Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor, I thought I heard them say
    "Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (such a lovely place)
    Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year (any time of year)
    You can find it here"
Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes-Benz, uh
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys that she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget
So I called up the Captain, "Please bring me my wine"
He said, "We haven't had that spirit here since 1969"
And still, those voices are calling from far away
Wake you up in the middle of the night just to hear them say
    "Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (such a lovely place)
    Such a lovely face
They're livin' it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise (what a nice surprise)
    Bring your alibis"
Mirrors on the ceiling, the pink champagne on ice
And she said, "We are all just prisoners here of our own device"
And in the master's chambers, they gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives, but they just can't kill the beast
Last thing I remember, I was running for the door
I had to find the passage back to the place I was before
"Relax, " said the night man, "We are programmed to receive
You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave"
