thanks for the showing. I made holes in a can with push pins, then I took sharp point end scissors and put them into the push pin holes and moved the scissors in a circular motion to make holes. it worked
Greetings from England. Love the simplicity of this stove, much more stable than beer can stoves and that you can simply place the pan/kettle on top. Genius. Nice no-frills presentation.
Thanks for the idea. Have made many Cat Can, and aluminum beverage can stoves. Impressed by the way that you've adapted the cat can concept to tuna cans. I believe that the principle can be carried a bit farther by using a canned chicken, or potted meat tin if an even greated diameter is required, for larger pots ... thanks for the useful video ... Cheers.
I’ve watched a lot of these videos and I like yours the best. Its better than just a cat food can and alcohol but not as complicated and difficult to make as many “garages engineers” make them to be.
This is so much easier than the "precision engineered" Foster beer can or soda can stoves. IOW, this stove is not only sturdier, but within the limits of my patience to make. Thanks.
so if the holes have to line up don't drill the side holes until after assembly. that way they will line up with no duplication of effort and the assembled stove will be a more sturdy thing to drill into.
George B. Wolffsohn your right but when you try that the inner can folds because of being flimsy tin when the drill bit hits it. I'm sure someone who uses a drimmel or maybe more skilled could have managed that but for me the effort really wasn't that strenuous. :-)
I made this just now from two aluminum cans. Worked better than any other tutorial I have seen and it's super fast and easy to make especially using the softer aluminum.
You can just drill the holes after they are compacted together, it will be stronger to drill through. I also put some cotton balls or any 100% cotton fabric in side. That works great if you will be traveling so it doesn't spill... Nice video thanks.
Hi a little tip, pack some fibre glass will inside of the stove, that way the alcohol will be absorbed into the fiberglass wool, and stop it from slushing about inside the stove on the move, and also saves the alcohol that is left inside the stove after use by not wasting it trying to pore it back into a container after being in use.
Actually your tip is even better than just preventing the fuel from sloshing, since it’ll also prevent a potential explosion caused by alcohol vapours combusting very quickly.
That was a fab bit of kit you made there. Thanks. Even I, who is not known for making anything other than A mess, managed to turn out this fire thrower at the first attempt. Keeep coming up with these ideas...
You know that after removing the top of the can you can also remove the ring along the side then when you go to bend the inner can it will be much more easy to fold
seems it would be easier to drill the port holes when the two cans have been pushed together. fill with water and freeze helps with the rigidity when drilling.
insert fiberglass insulation brfore you put the cans together for some spill protection and longer burn and the wind screen can double as a sturdy pot stand for larger pots
you can also use the rope that you sometimes find for sealing the doors on wood burning stoves. It won't burn, can handle the high temperatures and will absorb the alcohol so it will not slosh around.
However, it also prevents you from recovering unburned alcohol fuel. You can't pour alcohol back into the bottle if it's soaked into some kind of filler.
Search for penny stove they make them out of soda cans. It’s really easy it’s got alcohol in it. You can put insulation in them to hold the alcohol. They tend on leaking if they fall over. It’s an easy fun way to make one.

My question is how many uses do you get out of one cough syrup container? and uses out of your stove? Is that capful a 20 min run time Or is hour? Just curious on making one myself, and how efficient they are. Also I wanted to make something to snuff it out to save any left over fuel if at all possible
Interesting design but as another commenter suggested. Drill the holes, at least for the inner can after it is inserted. Also the obvious question. Most backpackers, which honestly is the biggest reason for using an alcohol stove, are concerned about weight. Why on earth would you want to carry an over sized and in the case of the one shown, very heavy pot?
Yeah I’m glad I predicted what might happen and tested it outside, since what you’ve made is basically a pulse jet engine. If you let the vapours build up, and the metal or the seal can’t handle the pressure, it will blow up, like mine did.
You see that denature alcohol can you got on the right side of you if you go to Walmart you get yourself a can or should I say yellow plastic container of heat and it's as close as you can get to denatured alcohol and it's a lot cheaper too by . I used to pick up a package of six for about $3.00 .
I made this from a an expired can of tuna. I did not open the can I drilled the holes and used a garden hose to get most of the tuna out of the can then put the can in a camp fire to burn out the rest then ran the hose one more time. I don't have and gas or air leaks so i get a hotter longer burn
I made one of those in 2005 it works for my coffee maker. And put insulation inside the can it works a heck of a lot better and it last longer . Then something being empty on the inside ...
Very creative use of tuna cans for a more stable base. Just wondering two things and please bear with me, as I am New to making these: 1) if super cat 🐱 stove is open on top, is the advantage of being closed on top top aid in stability? 2) what is the smallest size diameter pots can this stove accomodate ? Thank You very much for sharing this information
Bradley Mann I don't know that there is any advantage on Burn time. The main cause of putting the can inside as a top lid was really strengthened up the side walls; Tin bends extremely easy. If you look at the pot I put on top of the stove at 55 seconds I've actually used that stove and pot combination it works pretty well. But for wider pots that are out there a wider base seems to be way more stable.
Whittler36 What size drill bit did you use for the holes around the side. Tuna cans are more substantial. Great idea. Thanks a lot.I am going to build one or two.
The holes that I made work but I think 1/32 may work well and be a little more efficient. Maybe start with that. If it's not hot enough for you, you could always go up a size. That way it's kinda of custom to what works for you. Hope that helps. :-)
