I'm glad that I was there to see the start of anime. I remember seeing the original Kimba the White Lion when I was little followed by Speed Racer,or Mach Go Go Go. Then was Space Battleship Yamato and Team Gatchiman. And of course Macross in the early 80's. But when I was part of the early fan sub scene that's when I really got into it. Record of Lodoss War,Video Girl Ai, Bubblegum Crisis and many others led into the 90's. Laserdiscs helped a lot as well since they were region free. I've even written about anime for newspapers and fanzines. Oshii is one of the best and his style is not for everyone but it's definitely interesting. Modern anime really doesn't have the same impact as the stuff from 81' to 97' or so. Really the last thing I saw that impressed me was the remake Space Battleship Yamato 2199 which was very impressive and a good example for how remakes should be done. I still remember seeing things like Gunbuster for the first time and I go back occasionally to see what holds up and what doesn't and a lot of that formative stuff holds up pretty well. Especially since they weren't worried about a global audience and did whatever they wanted to do without any modern day DEI social justice garbage getting in the way.
Oshii just smiling and saying "okay" to demands, before doing whatever he wants anyways and succeeding so much they can't stop him, is exactly the energy I want.
It probably didn't happen that way, famous people tend to romanticize their stories and tell them in a way that sounds more interesting than what actually happened. The video even points out how the mangaka played along with the fandom's assumption that she and Oshii have a feud just because it makes for a more interesting story.
oshii has told the story a couple of times, usually its walking around and he bumps into a telephone poll or sees the flier on the poll and goes and makes a call at the station
This is an incredible surprise for me. Ghost in the Shell is one of my favorite anime franchises, I saw the first film and Jin-Roh for the first time around 2002 and I was instantly hooked. But around 97-98 when I was 12-13, Urusei Yatsura was airing in a local TV station where I live and it was this series alongside other classics that completely hooked me into anime and manga as a full hobby after years of collecting the Dragon Ball manga. I never imagined both things that marked me were from the same director.
At least as far as Director's Credit goes the man more or less transitioned from Urusei Yatsura to Angel's Egg [1985], and then got tangled in Headgear leading to working on Patlabor TV/OVA/Movie 1/2. Patlabor 2 presumably helped influence the decision to let hit pick up the first Ghost in the Shell movie in 1995. If you've not seen Patlabor Movie 2 yet, I would suggest checking it out given you like GitS and Jin-Roh.
Yeah I was hopeful for the remake, but, it just didn't recapture the magic for me... Of course, I was a different person decades ago and that first watch experience can never be experienced again, sigh
@@Stevem yeah that's the truth. Oshii was a genius and UY was somehow the perfect thing for him. Beautiful Dreamer is it? The 2nd UY Film, I believe he worked on that one and he absolutely blew it out the water what a film it was. I'm really glad they let him work his magic
@@8kujiyeah beautiful dreamer is covered in the video mainly it's the position between oshii and the staff which went far because the staff were kinda willing to do anything and were super talented
I was just thinking the other day that it has been awhile since a good Stevem video has dropped, and then !!Bam!! there it is. I dig the high production values of your work. It really must take some time to draw all the great artwork used in these videos. I grew up in the 80s watching several bootleg VHS of Urusei Yatsura movies, so Lum and Ataru have a fond place in my early anime experiences growing up.
While I never watched the full original anime, Rumiko Takahashi's original manga made a huge impact on my life and started my channel. To this day I've got her artwork hung up in my room. Thanks for the video
This was a great video, congrats for the work done here. The original Urusei Yatsura anime was my quarantine binge, watching over 90 episodes and the first movie during lockdown, and it was a very enjoyable watch. And while I've been unable to keep up with it since, this video is a great reminder to resume the series asap, especially because of Beautiful Dreamer. Even the post-Oshii material should provide something interesting. And funny how the reboot came and went in the time since btw. The biggest takeaway I got from this video though, is just how much creative freedom Oshii ultimately had when developing his vision of UY. It might've deviated from the source in places, especially with the out of order approach of adapting chapters and character tweaks (like ditching Kosuke in favor of fleshing out the Stormtroopers instead) but it resulted in a great series regardless, one that stood the test of time despite a lack of US coverage (it was a massive hit in Europe though). Retro anime adaptations, mostly from the pre-12 episode cour era, were definitely more likely to allow the director to inject its own ideas and concepts on top of the adapted material. Other examples I can think of is, fittingly enough, Miyazaki with Lupin the 3rd as well as both Junichi Sato and Kunihiko Ikuhara with Sailor Moon. And while UY eventually got the manga accurate reboot treatment, it served more as an alternative given how iconic the original series is.
it's also the rest of the team since Oshii kinda lets them do whatever as the series goes, so there's a lot of creative ideas thrown around from everyone, Oshii was just very supportive of them so it went both ways.
Incredible work once again, Stevem. Your ability to narrate a story through history is not only unparalleled in the anitube space, but incredibly valuable too. You are an absolute gem in this space. Thank you for this video, and we all hope to see more!
@@Stevem The rumor about Takahashi feuding with Oshii over Beautiful Dreamer always bugs me because it often monopolizes the conversation around the movie and it doesn't even seem to be true. I'm hoping that with the current resurgence in Takahashis' popularity, more people will watch it and enjoy it.
i think at most she has said is its not to her tastes, because she like more family animation film crowdpleaser types but not that she thinks its bad or anything
I already knew that Oshii was involved in the Urusei Yatsura series and directed Beautiful Dreamer, but I had no idea that he was so instrumental to the production of the TV anime. You chose a great time to upload the first part of this series with that Ranma 1/2 remake coming out. With Shaybs hyping up the first season of the original anime adaptation of that Takahashi series and you showcasing the awesome cuts and anime original deviations in the original Urusei Yatsura series, I guess I'm boosting up both of them in my watchlist. I'm really excited for the rest of this Oshii series as I just watched GITS 2 for the first time during the theatrical rerelease and I'm excited to catch the Angel's Egg rerelease early next year!
Great video! I've watched every UY episode, movie and OVA and I had never heard that the 1st movie had 40 minutes of extra footage! Urusei Yatsura was a good manga, but Oshii and all the others you've mentioned transformed it into an iconic anime. The remake was made with love and respect for the source material, but it doesn't have the edginess from the classic series.
I think it's more like 10-15 mins more and pp rider ended up trimming it's run time way more because urusei went 40 mins long same thing happened with movie 2 but those scenes are lost media now
20 years from now Stevem will cover the Junji Ito Collection, Maniac, and Uzumaki so we have 2 decades to predict the tittle These are my takes: "The rise and fall of Junji Ito's adaptations" "The JUNJI ITO DILEMMA" "The JUNJI ITO PROBLEM" "The JUNJI ITO DISASTERS"
I've always wanted to learn more about Mamoru Oshii but he did so many things. His Avalon is a fully Polish film - who does that? Or I watched Angel's Egg enough times to make an interpretation I am satisfied with, but I only half get why Ghost in the Shell references it in the diving scene. Urusei Yatsura always seemed like the most random thing for him to be involved in. And absolutely love the drawings here!
theory: ghost in the shell was produced in something like 8 month, so they probably had a rather tight schedule. and one of the things you do when you're in a spot like this is you start recycling and repurposing what you can. and as the protagonist in that movie mentions that when she floats up, she imagines herself transforming into someone else, they probably decided to sort of redo the scene from angel's egg, because there the character also transforms into someone else (well, sort of). it probably also was pretty safe to do, because, i think, only at the time were aware of angel's egg and even fewer had actually seen it (it only became recognized as a classic after the success of ghost in the shell).
8 months isnt short term for oshii he's had less, certainly its an amount of time where 90 mins is the goal but alot of the rest is probs as he says "marking a pole like a dog" when it comes to adding his style
9:18 I always wondered what was the deal back then with nudity in 80's anime. So some people did take offense. Not that I care about seeing cartoon boobs but the reason I don't want to see the reboot of this and Ranma is because that's part of the insanity. The newer show have better production quality but lack that punch.
Things have changed in Japan a lot since then, the way the laws are is a bit difficult to pin down but the government has quite a bit of power in what you can get away with and things became quite a bit tighter on television in the 00s. Especially since there were all these new channels that are satellite opposed to in the past when there were a few channels.
Anime from around 81' to 96' is really the golden age of anime. The most creative shows, the most experimental shows, the most unique styles were all in that time. Moden anime simply isn't as good. You will not see anything like Angels Egg now. Partly that was because it was before the bubble burst and they spent money on all sorts of stuff at the time. But it was also because you were dealing with a generation that was inventing new things as they went along. The OVAs for example. New studios like Gainax and Ghibli and Headgear coming up. It's a time that hasn't been outdone yet. Oshii was one of the best anime directors, doing live action abd animation ,out there and it's a pity he hasn't done as much in the last decade. I have almost everything he has made but it's very hard to get the few things he has done recently. Beautiful Dreamer is a fantastic film and Angels Egg is truly groundbreaking. Not to mention Patlabor 2,one of the greatest anime films ever made. There's just no one like him around now especially since Satoshi Kon passed away. Seeing the original Urusei Yatsura back in the early 90's was great. Animego's release of that series was crazy for the time. The remake is ok but just not as good. A prime example is right in the first episode when Ataru has to catch Lum. In the original he actually has to think and plan. He has to use his brain to win by tricking her. In the new show during the same scene all he does is run a bit faster and jump a bit higher. It actually makes him dumber and less interesting. Maybe that was the point but it makes for a far less satisfying show. The music just isn't as good either. It's crazy that Oshii did 100 episodes before he got sick of the show. Anyone who says he doesn't have a sense of humor needs to watch some of the episodes he did. A better show than Ranma as well.
So the version in the new urusei yatsura is closer to the manga basically, angels egg is a super rarity even of the time and there's so many factors which lead to it being greenlit which were fleeting including tokuma shotens president being very enamored with oshii and that oshii was gave a small sum of money to make the movie and no salary. Oshii struggles to get together the money and staff to make animated stuff these days for obvious reasons his super profitable projects were few and far between
The original was a work of art. How brilliant is it to thumb your nose at the censors by flashing full frontal nipples in prime time, even if it was only for a few seconds. The remake is garbage by comparison. The cut out even MORE stuff than the original anime did. The only thing they got right was Lum's hair. It was only turned blue-green in the original anime, because Lum's Rainbow-shimmering color changing hair would have been hell to animate on their budget and schedule.
Yet again you've wonderfully narrated an important part of animated history. Thank you for going through Oshii's career with a fine comb. I devoured this one completely, and eagerly await your next video. Do take the time you need though. Thanks as always for mentioning the various people that go into making anime. I hope others would take note. Edit: Nice new style btw, Oshii looks really cute.
Great work as always dude. Your videos take a lot of time to be made. Really appreciate it (alongside with The matching vibe with each video too, like EVA for example if you Know What i mean)
I actually preferred the two-parter episodes, and I know some other people feel the same way. Once the show got into full-length episodes, it really began to feel as though the show was wasting a lot of time prior to bringing us to the conclusion of each story. The original love triangle was all but abandoned by the time this change became permanent, and I felt that it had been a charm point of the show up until that point. Without Shinobu, there really was no "rational" reason for Ataru to reject Lum, and I really began to resent his character. Because of these factors, after that original change was made, it felt as though the show had gotten distinctly worse, without overtly losing its production quality. Even so, the show maintained a lot of its appeal all the way to the end of the first season. I haven't seen anything beyond that point, yet.
well the thing is both these changes do relate to the manga which went away from the quicker one off stories for longer ones and itself abandoned the shinubu vs lum stuff too. The reason ataru doesnt want to settle down is often more a reflection of what was considered the uncommitted young man of the time. Although some other stuff is explored later really ataru is just a worm whose in love with every woman who walks past him a complete simp, with no rizz and a lack of self awareness
It's cool to see how Dezkai's animation influenced Oshii. I've been going through a lot of Dezkai's works and I can definitely see some crossover. Can't wait for the Dallos video!
I was wondering if you know where to find the full Adventure of Nils movie? I’ve been checking the internet to see if I could watch it but I can’t find it anywhere, you mentioned it in this video and showed some footage that I’m hoping is the movie.
Awesome video. I have always loved the Urusei Yatsura animated series, now I also know the backstory and why! I'm surprised this isn't talked about enough among fans and a lot of the information you put in the video is some of the most interesting I've learned in a while. Thanks again.
To put this into context , there is no other great shows than this amazing masterpiece from the eighties. Our first came across the show when I was watching some eighties city pop music, I even dolved it when the bbc actually started dubbed in the uk. That being said the reboot and the Urusei Yatsura I watched being the classic one has actually straightforward cherished my life even when I actually faced such a very difficult time. When I? Moved house.I had nothing else to watch other than just Urusei Yatsura. I even still love the show even after watching. Most of her all of the contexts, I have just seen from this franchise and it really just screams that we will never ever get a good show as this even the reboot. Urusei Yatsura was Japan's greatest show of the aces and it was a turning point for not just japan but also for my life.As I actually stepped back into towards the 1980s.And it was an amazing pathway to do search and seeing the characters in that show was just incredible, I really enjoyed the humour and such gags being added to the show.Reminiscences of what this is really all about. Damn, I really missed our simple times😂😂😂.
Urusei Yatsura starts to be really good from middle season 1. I like how it`s predicates Beavis and butthead,it`s often happen in high school where big red-skin nervous teacher and small calm director with glasses(opostite to B&B).And crazy thing happens it that school,in UY more crazy.
Urusei Yatsura put Yumiko Takahashi on the map in Japan , but it was Ranma 1/2 that got her noticed around the world. She still cranking out manga series with her current one Mao.
urusei yatsura was big in italy maybe other parts of europe too i know that the italian opening theme ended up doing very well in the charts or so i hear, but yeah ranma i think is still her best selling manga to this day
@@Stevem talking about angel egg, it was produced by Deen, like second half of Urusei yatsura. Is angel egg is the reason the serie changed animation studio too?
@@chevalierkrakenso while produced at deen it is not really made by their staff haha, they rented a room and used deen as their headquarters but they were all busy with urusei or Maison. So the staff were for the most part from outside deen the key animators were an assembled group of Ghibli animators and prior connections oshii had from pierrot even the photography department seems to be the group who worked with him on beautiful dreamer. The inbetweeners were another obstacle they had to find the best ones In Tokyo because no one wanted to deal with their shit. Angels egg involved a lot of people running away because they didn't want to deal with it, so the people who ended up making it were a very small group, the animation likely only made it to the finish line because of the animation directors complete dedication
@@Stevem I know Deen never had animation team, they always work with freelancers (even if they have recurrent staff). the thing I am wondering is "why animation production shifted to Deen?". I always thought Deen gave to Oshii opportunity to do original project Pierrot refused (Angel egg, Patlabor, Twilight Q) and he chosse to work with them and most of the staff from Urusei Yatsura moved with him (even if some of them still worked on Pierrot magical girl and orange road until 1988). Because, Deen, even now, if the quality of their animation is often very variable tend to gave chance to many director for original project (It's their main force in fact)
@@chevalierkrakenno he was just indie, deen assisted on beautiful dreamer they were there so they ended up working there it wasn't particularly thought out, oshii chose to leave pierrot strictly for selfish reasons. Patlabor was not oshiis as much as he was asked to direct it by old colleague when he was not been given any work anywhere else. twilight q is also under head gear so much of the same situation there, oshii needed to feed his family.
Your documentaries are on another level to anything you can find on UA-cam. Nobody dabbles into anime history with the preciseness and, most of all, impartiality you have: I really commend you for it and I can't wait to see more about Oshii's career.
That mid-point in the run where every episode becomes really artsy and stylish is really what makes the show stand out. It's interesting to hear that such a decision was essentially the result of the production being made a hostage. I know Beautiful Dreamer has its popularity and is easy to pick up and watch, but some of the episodes from around that pivot point far outshine it, I think, with Episode 78 being the most obvious sign of the show's change towards being effectively what Beautiful Dreamer was (or would be). Do you know if the bathhouse episode got the same kind of blowback as episode 1 did?
episode 53 or episode 100? the shots in 53 are quite minor and on a crt maybe a bit harder to make out, i think ep 100 was fairly clean from what i recall
Episode 10 is when you get a glimpse of this shows real potential. It's when I see the beginning of certain technical innovations introduced in both writing structure and animation techniques that, in my humble opinion, they are able to eventually synthesize into high art with "Beautiful Dreamer".
@@Stevem Well it's all very nostalgic for me. I watched UY during my studies, somewhere in 2008. First tv format- anime I watched after long pause when Pokemon ubiquitousness made me hater of the anime in the early 00s .(except films, like Totoro or Spirited Away or Ghost in the Shell), I knew it was Oshii prodouction(I knew him only as Ghost in the Shell director at that time), so I was scared that it'll be just normal anime. Thank God it wasn't.
Omg as always amazing work! Love the illustrations and the relaxed pace of your videos n.n Can't wait to see your next videos on Oshii's work. Ganbatte !
gosh,,,i watched urusei yatsura a long time ago. it's amazing, it still holds up to this day. this anime is very ahead of its time. i haven't seen beautiful dreamer and other movies just yet. maybe that should surprise me even more.
Urusei Yatsura Fumi hirano as Lum and TOSHIO FURUKAWA Darling aka Ataru they are perfect together they show us why we the fan's love Lum and Her Darling aka Ataru in Urusei Yatsura ❤😊
I know this kind of thing isn't the type of show that you would normally cover, but if you'd ever consider it I think you could make a really great video about the disastrous early production of dragon Ball super I've heard a lot of people talk about it in bits and pieces but I've never heard someone lay the timeline out and talk about all the key players, the way that you do in these videos My understanding was that after the success of one of the movies the show was rushed into production and scheduled to air in only 2 months, and maybe they kicked a digimon show out of its original airing slot to make room for it ? I think eventually episodes started having to be finished in a matter of days or something, and everything came crashing down during one of the first major fight scenes
i vaguely know the story though im not sure if a lot if it has the best sourcing, i know the pre production was poor yeah maybe about 2 months, they caught up by ep 5, the designs were iffy to work with, and eventually it had to start increasing the amount of animation directors and animator to take it on. Well the good news is new character designers for the series and that Daima had a really long preproduction if i understand right and the show is super polished maybe even a bit over corrected if anything
Fantastic research my friend! I enjoy the original anime a lot and each year that’s passed since I got into UY I keep discovering new lore. Waiter waiter! More video essays please!
Episode 78 is a masterpiece. He took a nothing background character and made one of the most committed delves into the concept of self-acceptance ever put to film, certainly one of the tightest, as it was a tv episode.
I started watching Urusei Yatsura in middle school solely because i loved the music! I had a whole playlist of all the EDs and OPs. When i started watching it i fell in love with the style. I didn’t watch too much of the actual show but i watched all the movies SO much! God. I had actually seen Beautiful Dreamer as a kid before i knew what anime was! It used to scare me haha. I’m not too keen on the remake of this show as i hate the new art style. Nothing can touch the original! Another older anime i loved was Project A-Ko! C-Ko my beloved☺️…
I saw a couple episodes with friends a few years back and had a good time, in retrospect the way I'd look at it is. Uy 1981 is really wild card there's a lot of eps at first I found quite hard to get through but the episodes that great are on another level. The Uy remake is a fairly solid collection of stories but there's isn't quite the same power behind it all in terms of the way it's presented or that you won't just get some insane animation sequences out of pocket. And of course things they changed like Megane aren't like that anymore so no lums stormtroopers etc
It's hard for people who aren't Japanese to understand just how absolutely iconic this voice cast was in their time. If you can source a copy of Schoolgirl Milky Crisis, it has some good info in there that fleshes out the whole scene for us outsiders to better grasp.
I thought this was going to be a REMAKE BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD video, but not only is it about the original anime, it reveals it was a disaster and still a masterpiece anyway.
I will say that if you want to get into Urusei Yatsura you have such a variety of flavors, as is common with many older series. I think reading the manga, OG anime, and 2022 anime all bring their own flavor and stories with the manga and 2022 anime being the most similar. For me, reading the manga after watching the OG Anime made me realize how much they drew out the joke in adaptive episodes. The manga per chapter was about 16 pages. For reference the average size of an American comic is double that at 32. Most of the time the 'gimick' of the chapter is introduced in only 1-2 pages - basically it's fast paced. Where as the OG anime had 22 minutes to play with. They were essentially the high school student given a word limit for homework. Sometimes they do a lot with the space - but sometimes they don't all the same. I believe the OG anime is much more a product of the animation staff than Rumiko Takahashi's vision of the series and that is for better and for worse as I believe that the popularity of UY was more so because of some decisions made by the animation team, yet there is so much audiences never got to see that I think would have been much more interesting to see. There are even some differences I noticed that come from the gender of the artist in charge of the final product. Anyway all this to say, I am happy with how things came out despite all the complications and push and pull between creative decisions!
@@Stevem sometimes - but I wouldn't say thats a rule. unless they meshed the plots so seamlessly I never noticed such as the case with the Episode 39 (The Summer Date Episode) being more or less a direct adaptation of Chapter 36. The same can be said for the episode where Lum turns into a cow along with many others. The reality is that these episodes that adapted just one chapter did have to fill that space with new things to meet their run time. I am not saying its bad or good all in all- but it did happen
@@isaacmartinez2359episode 39 if I recalls adds a bunch of anime original content that's the other way this goes that's the same for episode 85 too where I think the second half is all exclusive to the anime. When making the video id be looking at the credits for most episodes which includes the chapters they took from and it seemed there was a large amount of two chapters or three chapters in the instance of episode 22
Being someone who isn't a big anime fan, Beautiful Dreamer fell on my list as one of my favorite animated movies of all time. I head that the movie was super popular in America and not so much in Japan.
Another great video from Stevem, our favorite distinguished anime industry documentarist. I really enjoyed the look into Oshii early carrier, I can't wait for the follow up. Keep up the good work sir, it is greatly appreciated.
I found the video to be very interesting. I was especially intrigued by the part about episode 78. I found that especially fascinating because Oshii's work is generally known for being philosophically and psychologically dense. Would you say that episode 78 is notably reminiscent at all of any of Oshii's later works? Also I really like the Illustrations! I especially like the dramatic close-up with harsh lighting at right around 34:45. They are all really cool but that one is particularly great! I do really miss the thing though where you would draw two different versions and the illustration and then rapidly switch between them to make them feel alive with a sort of wobbly effect. I was wondering though, what are those numbers you have up at the top left and right corners of the screen throughout the video? I couldn't figure out what those were referring to. Also i was wondering, what is the Fairlight exactly? Is it a synthesizer or what? really looking forward to the next part in the series!
Episode 78 is reminiscent of beautiful dreamer and angels egg in ways. I still do the illustrations with two or three drawings they're in this video lol I do them for quotes every oshii quote has one and sasagawa too I think he has two images. The numbers are sources as in where the information is from the source document is in the pinned comment and description
A fair light is the precursor to the sampler that's what I say in the video uses different sounds it can play back in a sequence something like that there's probs videos on UA-cam which can give better breakdowns
@@Stevem my bad lol. You're right you DID do that for the quotes! Very sorry about that!! I wasn't thinking clearly and was only thinking of the static illustrations thought they'd be cool if they were animated a bit but I completely forgot about the quotes when writing that, how lazy of me. Also thanks for explaining the numbers! It's really cool that you are giving all the sources for this stuff. So many other UA-camrs expect you take their word for everything so I really appreciate you providing sources in such an easy and convenient manner. I enjoyed watching urusei yatsura, but the two characters that made the show almost unbearable were ataru, and that stupid diaper baby (forgot his name). God it was so annoying at times when they were on screen

Oshii was a bit devious you could say
@@Stevemi said this in a different comment, but he sort of reminds me of Yoko Taro in personality
It's so crazy that one of the most influential storytellers in my life got his start from walking into a telephone pole.
life is strange huh
It probably didn't happen that way, famous people tend to romanticize their stories and tell them in a way that sounds more interesting than what actually happened. The video even points out how the mangaka played along with the fandom's assumption that she and Oshii have a feud just because it makes for a more interesting story.
oshii has told the story a couple of times, usually its walking around and he bumps into a telephone poll or sees the flier on the poll and goes and makes a call at the station
Same thing happened to Jesus.
that's the most anime origin story you could think of.
I never imagined both things that marked me were from the same director.
with jin roh oshii wrote the first draft but had less involvement overall but its part of the world he created for sure
Urusei Yatsura. There'll be nothing like you again ever. I love that show man
Yeah I was hopeful for the remake, but, it just didn't recapture the magic for me... Of course, I was a different person decades ago and that first watch experience can never be experienced again, sigh
UY under oshii was a pretty rare situation too where anything went for better or worse

Oy! Oyy!
More to come soon dallos and another video are all almost complete!
Apologies I can't get the captions to process for whatever reason, I will try and fix it if possible
i fixed them!!!!!
@@Stevemhuzzah! Thank you for your quality, it is appreciated.
While I never watched the full original anime, Rumiko Takahashi's original manga made a huge impact on my life and started my channel. To this day I've got her artwork hung up in my room. Thanks for the video
Oh must be nice to have her art work around thanks for watching
And while UY eventually got the manga accurate reboot treatment, it served more as an alternative given how iconic the original series is.
it's also the rest of the team since Oshii kinda lets them do whatever as the series goes, so there's a lot of creative ideas thrown around from everyone,
Oshii was just very supportive of them so it went both ways.
We're all so lucky that the BBC gave the original Lum the Invader Girl episodes to Japan. Thank you BBC!
I wish they'd gave us more than two lol
@Stevem I'd actually pay for a TV Licence if there were more "Lum the Invader Girl". Ha ha, yeah... erm, I mean, of course I pay for a TV Licence!
@@MostBronzeChunner of course who doesnt...
Incredible work once again, Stevem. Your ability to narrate a story through history is not only unparalleled in the anitube space, but incredibly valuable too. You are an absolute gem in this space. Thank you for this video, and we all hope to see more!
Dallos section should come out next month then hopefully angels egg the next month after
Holy cow you've got a lot planned, amazing!!
well yeah the dallos section is done already so im just prepping videos one by one now
Great video as always! Urusei Yatsura is so good but there aren't many additive videos on it so you love to see it.
yeah I want to really hit on all the main stories of the production and how it all happened and dispel a couple rumors people say
Excelent work as always. Looking forward to patlabor ovas and movies bro! Did you study animation or something? your first videos are animations.
i have a BA in illustration so ive done a bit of animation in my time yeah, still do bits and pieces for my videos
Hopefully my angels egg video will come out in December
There no bigger joy than a new video from you, the quality of your work is just another level.
thank you!
I think it's more like 10-15 mins more and pp rider ended up trimming it's run time way more because urusei went 40 mins long same thing happened with movie 2 but those scenes are lost media now
20 years from now Stevem will cover the Junji Ito Collection, Maniac, and Uzumaki so we have 2 decades to predict the tittle
These are my takes:
"The rise and fall of Junji Ito's adaptations"
"The JUNJI ITO DILEMMA"
"The JUNJI ITO PROBLEM"
"The JUNJI ITO DISASTERS"
Hehe it might be closer than you think in some regard
I've always wanted to learn more about Mamoru Oshii but he did so many things. His Avalon is a fully Polish film - who does that? Or I watched Angel's Egg enough times to make an interpretation I am satisfied with, but I only half get why Ghost in the Shell references it in the diving scene. Urusei Yatsura always seemed like the most random thing for him to be involved in. And absolutely love the drawings here!
If you want to shoot cheap you'd go to Poland I guess and I think oshii just likes diving
theory: ghost in the shell was produced in something like 8 month, so they probably had a rather tight schedule. and one of the things you do when you're in a spot like this is you start recycling and repurposing what you can. and as the protagonist in that movie mentions that when she floats up, she imagines herself transforming into someone else, they probably decided to sort of redo the scene from angel's egg, because there the character also transforms into someone else (well, sort of).
it probably also was pretty safe to do, because, i think, only at the time were aware of angel's egg and even fewer had actually seen it (it only became recognized as a classic after the success of ghost in the shell).
Oshii struggles to get together the money and staff to make animated stuff these days for obvious reasons his super profitable projects were few and far between
100% true. I basically only watch anime from 80s and 90s with some 70s and early 2000s. My favorite style is the hand drawn hand cel painted stuff

Glad to hear it!
Great work as always dude. Your videos take a lot of time to be made. Really appreciate it (alongside with The matching vibe with each video too, like EVA for example if you Know What i mean)
Much appreciated!
LUM MY BELOVED
lum pilled
I knew those Lum image flashes were intentional.

I was wondering if you know where to find the full Adventure of Nils movie? I’ve been checking the internet to see if I could watch it but I can’t find it anywhere, you mentioned it in this video and showed some footage that I’m hoping is the movie.
It's from the movie, pretty sure it's on nyaa but I don't think it's subtitled
Awesome video. I have always loved the Urusei Yatsura animated series, now I also know the backstory and why! I'm surprised this isn't talked about enough among fans and a lot of the information you put in the video is some of the most interesting I've learned in a while. Thanks again.
Glad you enjoyed it!

Yes. Thanks. I really enjoyed also the source material you provided 🙌🏼
STEVEM covering Urusei Yatsura wasn't on my bingo cards.
well here it is lol and same for the rest of Oshii's stuff
Urusei Yatsura starts to be really good from middle season 1. I like how it`s predicates Beavis and butthead,it`s often happen in high school where big red-skin nervous teacher and small calm director with glasses(opostite to B&B).And crazy thing happens it that school,in UY more crazy.
Urusei Yatsura put Yumiko Takahashi on the map in Japan , but it was Ranma 1/2 that got her noticed around the world. She still cranking out manga series with her current one Mao.
urusei yatsura was big in italy maybe other parts of europe too i know that the italian opening theme ended up doing very well in the charts or so i hear, but yeah ranma i think is still her best selling manga to this day
Oshii is one of my favourite directors (in animation and outside of it) happy to watch an in depth look at his early years
there's lots of fun stories to come!
Can´t wait till we get to Mamoru Oshii´s many flops and flat-out weird project. Who the hell funded Maroko?

Eventually, it will be hopefully be in December
Nobody dabbles into anime history with the preciseness and, most of all, impartiality you have: I really commend you for it and I can't wait to see more about Oshii's career.
thank you!
This channel is pure gold
thank you!
Indeed
@@Stevem I was thinking 53. I guess it's mostly disguised, so it makes sense if it didn't catch the same sort of attention.
i havent heard of one but maybe there was not uncommon for these types of things to get complaints
Episode 10 is when you get a glimpse of this shows real potential. It's when I see the beginning of certain technical innovations introduced in both writing structure and animation techniques that, in my humble opinion, they are able to eventually synthesize into high art with "Beautiful Dreamer".
i will say the new UY didn’t have the music that still attracts me to the series
what a gorgeous series, nothing beats the 80s anime aesthetic
Oshi the Beginning (of director). Very informative video.
more to come soon!
Urusei Yatsura ❤😊
The voice cast is goated
I know this kind of thing isn't the type of show that you would normally cover, but if you'd ever consider it I think you could make a really great video about the disastrous early production of dragon Ball super
I've heard a lot of people talk about it in bits and pieces but I've never heard someone lay the timeline out and talk about all the key players, the way that you do in these videos
My understanding was that after the success of one of the movies the show was rushed into production and scheduled to air in only 2 months, and maybe they kicked a digimon show out of its original airing slot to make room for it ?
I think eventually episodes started having to be finished in a matter of days or something, and everything came crashing down during one of the first major fight scenes
i vaguely know the story though im not sure if a lot if it has the best sourcing, i know the pre production was poor yeah maybe about 2 months, they caught up by ep 5, the designs were iffy to work with, and eventually it had to start increasing the amount of animation directors and animator to take it on. Well the good news is new character designers for the series and that Daima had a really long preproduction if i understand right and the show is super polished maybe even a bit over corrected if anything
I'm glad you're here still putting out these wonderful retrospective analysis videos my fine friend.
More to come!
Fantastic research my friend! I enjoy the original anime a lot and each year that’s passed since I got into UY I keep discovering new lore.

It wasn't on when I was younger but I might not have been old enough I think it played on the BBC here
Would you consider making a career deep dive about either Leiji Matsumoto, Katsuhiro Otomo or Yoshiaki Kawajiri like you did with Hideaki Anno?
i've covered pretty much every kawajiri movie on the channel already, Otomo may happen one day who knows
Episode 78 is a masterpiece. He took a nothing background character and made one of the most committed delves into the concept of self-acceptance ever put to film, certainly one of the tightest, as it was a tv episode.
it might be my fave it is up there
I started watching Urusei Yatsura in middle school solely because i loved the music! I had a whole playlist of all the EDs and OPs. When i started watching it i fell in love with the style. I’m not too keen on the remake of this show as i hate the new art style. Nothing can touch the original! Another older anime i loved was Project A-Ko! C-Ko my beloved☺️…
funny you mention Project A-ko since the staff were made up of mainly ex urusei yatsura staff
Happy to see you back Stevem. Always a better day when you release new work.
Thank you kindly!
1:30 He's just like me fr
Hey, Stevem, what are your thoughts on the remake?
I saw a couple episodes with friends a few years back and had a good time, in retrospect the way I'd look at it is. Uy 1981 is really wild card there's a lot of eps at first I found quite hard to get through but the episodes that great are on another level. The Uy remake is a fairly solid collection of stories but there's isn't quite the same power behind it all in terms of the way it's presented or that you won't just get some insane animation sequences out of pocket. And of course things they changed like Megane aren't like that anymore so no lums stormtroopers etc
WHAT A TREAT!
Thank you!
no problem !
It's hard for people who aren't Japanese to understand just how absolutely iconic this voice cast was in their time. If you can source a copy of Schoolgirl Milky Crisis, it has some good info in there that fleshes out the whole scene for us outsiders to better grasp.
They're a great cast and most went onto to be pretty high profile
I love the voice cast. Fumi, Hirano, Akira Kamiya and Toshio Furakawa are my favorites.
I thought this was going to be a REMAKE BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD video, but not only is it about the original anime, it reveals it was a disaster and still a masterpiece anyway.
nah remake lum has differnt coloured hair thats the OG
my mother introduced me to Rumiko Takahashi’s animation and manga and haven’t looked back! I can remember being on Misawa AFB When UY premiered
Exceptional video!
Was talking about VHS but showing Betamax just a matter of available footage or a flex of the superior medium?
That player I think was both VHS and beta if I recall, if not lol
@@Stevem ah, lol.
Usually after the split point every episode is adapting two chapters not one
@@Stevem sometimes - but I wouldn't say thats a rule. unless they meshed the plots so seamlessly I never noticed such as the case with the Episode 39 (The Summer Date Episode) being more or less a direct adaptation of Chapter 36. The same can be said for the episode where Lum turns into a cow along with many others.
The reality is that these episodes that adapted just one chapter did have to fill that space with new things to meet their run time. I am not saying its bad or good all in all- but it did happen
@@Stevem Also thank you for the video!
Episode 53s first half was completely original and the underwater sequence is far expanded in the anime to add all the mecha stuff
Beautiful Dreamer was so freaking good
I really like it
Will you be going into Oshii’s live action work at all?
it will get its own full video
Being someone who isn't a big anime fan, Beautiful Dreamer fell on my list as one of my favorite animated movies of all time. I head that the movie was super popular in America and not so much in Japan.
not the case at all it sold very well in japan
Great video man! You should do video on this MAPPA studio who also rebooted Ranma 1/2 a highly successful serie during the 80's 90's
if i did a video on mappa it would probs be for different reasons...
@@Stevemother projects?
@@A1000-b9s poor working conditions and scandals
Always a pleasant surprise to see your videos. Thank you.
My pleasure!
I love the young naive/ SD ohsii you have animated
glad you enjoyed he was an awkward one to get right need to clean up that plastersine model
1:51 I would love if you make you a deep dive into Gatchaman, Stevem.
Everyone knows Super Sentai nowadays yet only a few know Gatchaman.
Not my area lol check out animetudes series on tatsunoko
thanks for covering my favorite anime my guy
No problem
Another great video from Stevem, our favorite distinguished anime industry documentarist. I really enjoyed the look into Oshii early carrier, I can't wait for the follow up. Keep up the good work sir, it is greatly appreciated.
glad you enjoyed!
Loved the video. Did you like the episodes after Oshii left?
i havent seen too much because of time really but they seem cool, i like studio deans work on other takahashi adaptations
This show is top tier gas 🥶
lol thanks i guess
Again I'm really looking forward to the next video!
@@MaxRussel-m7t I'm pretty particular about sourcing because of how many trust me bro people are about and often theyre very wrong, if youre speculating you might as well at least say. I mean depending going forward some drawings may be getting the two frame process, if the vibe is right
Great video! Quick question though, what's the name of the song in the first few seconds of the video until the sponsorship part?
merus theme from legend of dragoon
I love the illustrations of the people involved in the production like the game Hotel Dusk on the DS.
i think i was actually playing that game when i first started drawing these kinda production pictures for these videos several years back lol
Awesome!. Right after they ended the UY tv show they started Maison Ikkoku, the show to watch after UY
Maison is good, kinda different approach than here though
Masterclass video. Big ups m8
Much appreciated
This show ran the whole way through Animax, and it was my first exposure to anime romcom along with Ranma. I wished they also included the movies back then.
damn the takahashi double bill
I grew up during the french anime boom of the 80's Lamu , nils olgerson, les cites d'or were my jam. Remi sans famille, princesse sara, Candy LADY MOTHERFOOKIN OSCAR!!!!! Oggi et les cafards could never 😂😂
yeah french had that wave from the late 70s onwards they were ahead of the curve
I like how Shinobu's Cinderella story got a shout out. I really love that one it feels like a Hitchcock movie.
solid ep for sure
BRO I LITERALLY LOOKED UP YOUR CHANNEL YESTERDAY LIKE ‘hmm I haven’t seen a stevem vid in a while hope he’s doing okay’ AND HERE HE FUCKING IS
We're so back
Urusei yatsura was so great, watched the whole series. The movies are cool too
Learning history is just humbling (and liberating, that I can do something worthwhile too)
glad it was worth it then
Final smug shot a darn citation of Ashita no Joe final shot!
yeah it seemed fitting
I started watching the new yatsura anime and never watched the original, I feel it was missing a spark, I heard about that yatsura movie about the dream and now I know why that one looked so special, I am a new sub to your channel and I already see a spark in your videos, I hope to see more, old and new starting from this one
hope you enjoy then
I love these retro anime history videos! Keep up the great work! ❤
Thanks! Will do!
I enjoyed watching urusei yatsura, but the two characters that made the show almost unbearable were ataru, and that stupid diaper baby (forgot his name).
God it was so annoying at times when they were on screen
You're thinking of ten-chan
@ why must you curse me so
Ohh Yattaman & Golden Cities I loved that as a kid thanks for sharing this well-made and informative video
Glad you enjoyed it
Tremendo video. Muy informativo. ¡Muchas gracias! Regards from Lima, Perú. 🇵🇪
thank you!
My favorite movie of all time is beautiful dreamer and I will always miss urusei thank you for this video😊
My pleasure 😊
This is great stuff! I love learning about classic anime, and in such great detail too! I haven't really consumed much of Urusei Yatsura other than some of the movies and I already respected it greatly but this makes me respect it even more!
Glad you enjoyed !
34:39 I see all this researching Oshii has his storyboarding style rubbing off on you that cut to his smile was Amazing
Well I tried to give them some style
