Glad to see you're back with the 73 community again I'll be honest when you got the Dodge sort of lost interest please don't take this personal just not a big Dodge fan but noticed a couple weeks ago that you were back with the 73 community doing your 73 stuff with a new truck and congratulations on your responses from your comments that's very impressive anyways glad you're back always looking forward to new videos from you like the old days
I have had a 7.3 now for about four years and I gotta tell you I watch every single one of your videos to upgrade my black Betty. she’s a 2001 lariat crew cab from Florida. She’s got about 194,000 on her right now and I expect another 194,000 out of her easily. I appreciate you taking the time to video your findings. It helps us all out immensely. Keep up the good work brother. Thanks again again for your videos.
This is a great mod for the 7.3, I did this when I tackled the water pump…however I didn’t get the silicone hose…wasn’t an option then I don’t believe. The only thing I might add is I used a couple of zip ties to hold the upper radiator hose to the bracket…right along the lip it sits in, keeps it away from the serpentine belt. I really appreciate your videos…very educational and thorough, I watch them all. Love the content.. keep ‘‘em coming.
I was originally planning on adding some zip ties or a strap but after installing this hose I actually have very little concern of it hitting the belt. Because of the fit and how much more rigid it is I had to put a lot of pressure on it to even get it close. Something I will keep an eye on though.
The reason the hose goes through the belt now is so that when the belt shreds or lets go it doesn't take the hose with it. It's far more convenient to just pull the TOP or Upper clamp and slip the belt over the hose, quickly, than change both the belt and the hose. If you remove the hose and slip the belt over the hose quickly you won't loose but a cup of coolant, and you're overflow has more than enough to make up for any loss. If you are going to route the hose on the original mount outside the belt, at least wrap it with some aluminum sheeting and use some Gates clamps to secure it. That way if the belt shreds or comes off slowly it won't take your hose with it. Now to actually change the belt out, just do the bottom one on top of the water pump fast and you'll loose some for sure, but just have that bucket under the truck and you'll loose less. It's messy but faster than draining the majority of the system, also less air in the system that way to. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya
Parts stores carry the upper radiator hose for the "dual alternator" option trucks and it goes around the serpentine belt. (in case you can't get the Riff Raff version in time)
I got about $10Gs of RiffRaff parts on my 2000 7.3 and Yes Clay is Awesome to work with :) While they have them in stock... Get a Motor/ Injector wire harness Now! These trucks are old and just replacing my harness she's running way smoother! Also Bro, theres a slot to put a zip tie on the alt. to hold the hose! But still miss the ole F-250 I watched you build!
Riffraff is THE supplier for power stroke parts, I have ordered several parts and they have outstanding quality and customer service I have a late 99 with a 7.3. this looks like a must have upgrade !!!
Riffraff for the win I settled for upper and lower silicone hoses on my truck but went with oem location because I was unable to find this upgrade. Thanks again for your video.
Hey Joe, I think most of us know that these companies sometimes provide their parts to you UA-camrs, that's how they get business. I'm sure it will make someone jealous, it always does. Riff Raff is a great Powerstroke company and I'd like to thank them for helping you out from time to time. I changed the hose on my 7.3 several years back I knew it would definitely be a problem one day, like you said if your serpentine belt ever broke, it would be bad day, lol 😂 Have a Blessed day brother. Jay. 🕊️🕊️🕊️
just a mention.. have a early 99 very low miles xlt that has the outside the belt factory installed hose, also if you notice outboard of the alternater the notch has designed room for a clamp.. mine has a zip style clamp keeping the hose snug in place.. enjoyin the vids 😊
Another great preventative maintenance video! I’m waiting for spring weather to do my ‘05 6.0’s upper & lower radiator hoses. Maybe a coolant flush. I do run a coolant bypass filter. I know people feel strongly either way but it came with the truck. 2 years ago, I replaced the truck’s bed rails that had rusted out. I had to do some body work to the wheel wells. Of course, I started doing upgrades since the bed was off. I even painted the bed underside with bed liner…fun times!
If you lose your serpentine belt while driving a 7.3, you already messed up. All my 7.3 trucks have the longer hose but that won't save it when that belt breaks. The serpentine belt will rip both the top and radiator hoses loose along with the transmission cooling lines and leave you stranded. You have to keep a close eye on the belt and ALL the idlers to make sure they are properly aligned and spinning freely. If you see a strand separating from the edge of the belt, it's because one of your idlers are worn and misaligned. Use a straight edge along each pulley and verify that the straight edge is parallel to the path the belt needs to take to reach the next pulley. It's not about losing about a gallon of coolant changing the belt, it's about losing ALL the coolant and most of your transmission fluid depending on how quick you can shut off the truck. This happened to me in a narrow construction zone with a trailer loaded with 8,500 Lbs. of steel. A mile from the next exit, and I made that mile and halfway up the exit ramp.
Awesome, I’m guessing the silicone is far superior to the OEM hose…and as you said won’t require the zip ties. Thank you for sharing…it is greatly appreciated.
Good video Joe!!! I have bought from Riffraffdiesel before. Love their products. Something you may want to consider is switching to Evans High Performance coolant. DieselSite sells it. It's expensive up front but it should last the lifetime of the truck. It does have 2 more advantages that you have 0 psi pressure on your coolant system and you you put it in and forget about it. As far as a coolant bypass filter. You will be surprised how fast the filter plugs up. I have one on my 2000. I also am using the Evans High Performance coolant in my 2000. Have had it in it for 5- 7 years.
thanks.... more parts to add to my cart from Riff Raff... lol Luckily my 01 already had the upper radiator hose that doesn't interfere with the belt, but huge believer of silicone hoses.. i use them on my racecar. keep up the great work man..
It's been a while since I've seen you put anything out... it's definitely good to see you and I've been wanting to do this upgrade for a while now. I got my 7.3 about a yr ago. I recently just bed lined my entire truck, vids on my channel for anyone interested, keep up the great work sir😊👍
Just when I thought I knew everything about my 73. I always wondered why that cut out was in that bracket behind the alternator. I’ve never heard of this before. I have had to change my belt on the side of the road I was able to do it very quickly with the help of my son we just he had the belt in place, I disconnected the hose heswooped the belt really quick and reconnected the hose and lost very minimal coolant
I just did this and had to change my clamps out to screw hose clamps. I honestly didn’t even notice that it went through the belt before and that one didn’t as I did it when I pulled the motor
I have an 01 7.3 I had a bad belt squeak new motorcraft belt did not fix the squeak. Looked deeper into it found that the belt tensioner was worn and out of alignment. I but a new motorcraft tensioner and idler pulley on and squeak- noise is gone 👍
That’s cool! Would be very very nice next time I have to change my squealing belt. Man these things can squeal so loud you would swear that the is a pulley going out somewhere….. Decade long 7.3 Guy, had to figure everything out on my own, wanted to share this. I am not sure if everyone realizes that there are different part numbers for their belts. My parts guy schooled me… For the trucks with the Block Heaters, there is a belt that is slightly shorter than the truck with out the heater. It squeals a lot less now…So yeah, 10 years and just figuring that out and wanted
Just did the HPOP on the ole (01)) 7.3… I had the crazy No start with turned in to very hard to start…… I found that what I was doing wrong was trying to start the truck on a bad starting system… A new Starter, New Batteries, Make sure your cables are tight before doing that job. That truck needs to have all you got. So I had one negative cable on the passenger side very slightly loose. The one on the drivers side was hot as heck…. Hope that helps someone out one day
Hey there, I’ve been watching your videos for a few years now and have been a long time fan. I occasionally post some of my own 7.3 content too. When I swapped the serpentine belt, I drained a little bit of the coolant into a bucket and just popped off the hose up top and ran the new belt over it. Nice option from riffraff though!
I actually thought the same thing as I was going through this process. Definitely not as big of a deal if you're doing it on your own schedule. Would be less fun if it happened while driving and you had to wait for the truck to cool.
The only reason I'm not going with this particular hose is because the hydro assist steering setup I'm going with in the future requires the through-the-belt hose. Thankfully, Mishimoto's silicone hose goes through the belt AND RiffRaff carries it.
If you are going to do this upgrade I would also upgrade to the billet thermostat housing at the same time. 100% worth it as the stock pressed metal ones are absolute garbage and always leak.
Hey Joe, what happened to that dodge you had? Glad you got another 7.3! Still got my 01 7.3 and bout to do a red head steering gear box on mine to tighten up the steering wheel.
@LivingOnWheels glad to see you keeping at it man, look forward to more videos from you. Maybe one about putting 20x12 wheels with 35s on the truck. Future idea for me lol
Chect to see if your tensioner has a locki g tab at the bottom if so no tools required just pull the belt with one hand and push the locking tab with the other hand you can upgrade your tensioner with the tab.
