Premium alternatives works like a charm ... get a premium one and re do this episode you'll be happy and people will understand the real benefits of this tool instead of trolling about failed attempt
I like the failed attempt....just keeping it real. At the end of the day I can make these videos look anyway I want. I could have said nothing about me having issues with this tool and edited it like the tool was awesome, but that wouldn't be the truth and I like to keep it real with you guys. If I have some kind of issues I want to show, I have nothing to hide. I know these things are known to work well, just not in this particular case for what ever reason.
I have one from snap on that I bought in the 80's , used it probably 100 times over the years and it still works . They just don't make them the same good quality anymore , it's all low carbon recycled steel now .
Nuts come in various amounts of hardness. The nut is often labeled with a hardness symbol stamped right into the nut. The nuts that get the most rusty and are hardest to get off, are typically exhaust system nuts, and these are typically nuts with only a mild degree of hardness. So they should be easier to cut through with a nut cutter, or simply a cold chisel and a hammer.
Bought mine off the Snap-on truck 32 years ago and it still works fine. A little WD-40 on the treads of the tool before tightening it and you'll never have a problem.
It's a tool that will make, or break your will to live another day. I'll admit I bought a cheap model years ago. Worked OK on the first exhaust manifold nut, the second nut, the threads piled up on the splitter. Got pissed off, couldn't release the nut splitter. Got a hammer and started beating on the nut splitter back and forth. Saw movement, but exhaust stud broke flush with cylinder head. It does have it's place and time where you can't get in with a die grinder, with a death wheel.
That type of nutspllitter always gives trouble of some sort. I found that they work best by tightening them up and then giving then a tap on the end before further tightening and further tapping until the nut splits. Otherwise use an impact wrench. After getting through about five of them over the years I now just use an air chisel from the start, still have a couple of nutsplitter's in the tool box one with a bend and the other still in good shape but that due to little use
From my experience with these they work best if you tighten and tap with a hammer, doing this sequence several times until you see deformation of the nut. This is usually enough to free it up where it can be removed with a wrench. Sometimes you may have to go two or three places around the nut to free it up enough so that it can be removed. You don't normally need to actually break the nut, just deform it so that the rust bond is broken between the nut and bolt. The impact from the hammer also helps to break the rust bond. If the nut does require breaking just do the tighten tap, tighten tap method until the nut breaks to keep from breaking the tool.
Yes, what you said plus several generous squirts of penetrating fluid to dissolve the corrosion. Good tip; it also pays not to overload the tool in the first place. I don't think the Kylester read the directions before he used it or he'd have known he was trying to crack a nut that was too large for the tool.
I have been a mechanic for 25 years and I can honestly say I've never used one. I usually use a cut off wheel or air saw to make a score line then I use a air hammer with a chisel to finish it off. I do it on 2 sides of the nut if I can get to it.
Spent a whole day working on my downpipe nuts and couldn’t get them to budge and completely forgot about this tool I will be buying one tomorrow and trying that
what these tools are great for is stuff like one time use power steering fitting and other softer and thinner metal nuts, I've always had decent results although the two nut splitters i Ihave both have the cutter on the side you put the wrench on and where annoyingly costly.
A heavy amount of anti-sieze should be applied to the cutting edge as well as the threads inside, also an impact gun will hammer right threw a nut with less galling to the tool and an audible crack to the nut when its threw. Snap on makes a nice peice called the NC52.
My thing is this. Why not design the tool so that it splits the nut in half on both sides? Plus, it should have a better threading chamber to prevent damaging the tool causing it to seize. PowerBuilt makes a Nut Splitter that splits the nut from the other end, so you should do a review on their product. Maybe it's designed better, but I still feel that the nut should be split in half from both sides. I also feel that you should use a powered drill instead of a rachet.
I purchased the kobalt version the next day my buddy had a stud come loose from his hub needed to do the bakes but the lug wouldn't come off because the stud was just spinning attached the nut splitter and work great had to split it twice on opposite ends to get the lug completely off needless to say You definitely need this tool Thanks Kyle
I've had one for years. Rarely need to use it but it's higher end and always did the job. The problem is typically when you need it there isn't enough room to get it in there, (why you needed it in the first place), so use another cruder method anyway.
I was building a electrical crimper for battery cables and large gauge splice connections, and found that at oriellys last night $7.99 so I scrapped the other project. If you round off the chisel edge that then becomes the perfect crimper in a tight spot. I have to replace battery cables on diesels and cars all the time and it will make quick work of it verses a hammer crimper or those long bolt cutter looking crimpers.
Michael--Good information on alternative use of a tool. Sometimes I use a tool for a purpose for which it was never designed, because it happens to work for me in the moment. Incidentally, the word in line 4 of your comment should be "versus", which can also be abbreviated as "vs" or "v." (these last two are abbreviations commonly used in naming the two opposing parties to a lawsuit).
I got stuck so many times with rusted bolts, I lost a count (like many of us), however as far as I see this tool brilliant, I think it won't fit in all spaces to do its job, (on a car for instance).....ordered anyway!
After you split one side of the nut. You suppose to split directly on the other side of the nut. And it will easily come off. Also my nut splitting tool actually has the blade going down instead of the blade being on the bottom. Which is better than the one that has the blade on the bottom.
Thank you for being honest about the quality. I just bought a set from Amazon. I will let you know how mine does. Catalytic converter flange removal for me. I knew better but I put some rinky dink nuts that came with my part and I had a feeling they were not the right size. Now I cannot remove them. They just spin. Grrrr.
lube the treads of the tool before trying to split the nut. also they come in different sizes for that nut you should have probably used the bigger one. I've used them before and they seem to work ok. I like the plasma cutter or just a grinder but I used them for work near the gas tank when I didn't won't to catch on fire.
It would've been cool to see you to not only use your hand to split the nut but also try it with an impact driver with a socket adapter and an actual impact wrench and compare the difference.
Lube dude, you cannot properly bust a nut without lube... ;) Seriously, i have found liberal high pressure lube or anti-seize on the tool threads is a must. I have had a set of 3 from Lisle Tools for about 30 years, super helpful in the right situation. Grade 8 or hard nuts split easier than grade 2, 3 or 5. Also partially split the nut, then turn tool 90-180 degrees and finish splitting, taking care to not damage the stud threads, works like a champ. Cute kid, from experience, you are going to become the great protector very soon as she grows up and boys become a bigger presence in her life.
Did you find one that works? It seems like they all get many bad reviews. I ordered the Craftsman one but I'm afraid it'll only work once and I've got two nuts to break.
Dude, you're supposed to let the sharp side bite into the nut slightly to the side, so it's cutting at around a 45ish degree angle with reference to the stud. Chomping straight down onto the nut is basically just pressing it into what is an almost flat surface :)
I've had limited success with them, some are better quality than others also. Success depends also on grade of nut/bolts. Cutting with grinder has always been easier and faster
I've had a few times where I stuck one on a extension and fed it in where a cutter wouldn't go and used a impact , worked like a charm. I think the speed of the impact is the ticket or I have just been crazy lucky as all get up. I use crazy cheap ones also and have been lucky enough not to break one yet (key word), I figure if it takes one stubborn nut off where there is no room and then breaks ... its "worth" to me. lol I've used them as half azzed wrenches to break rounded nuts also... tightened er on there for a good bite and cracked them loose. :)
I bought one about 15 years ago.. Worked well the couple of times I needed it.. Split one side then chiseled it loose and off. . The other needed a little heat. Handy tool to keep around though... You never know when you'll need something like this to get in where a cutoff wheel won't.... Nice work Kyle...👍
I always wished tools like this, with threaded parts, had acme threads and a good heat treatment. Instead they almost always have small, fine threads and things like this happen. I know the more threads the greater the surface area but the threads don't have enough support behind each peak. Plus the metal itself usually isn't tough enough either.
I have never seen one work any where you need it to , tight spots. Better to just use a air hammer and chisel if you don't have heat. The best way I have ever found is induction heater,They are hands down the best and I live in the rust belt where they salt the roads daily.nuts that are round from rust can still be remove with ease.
Great to see your leetle one take a small role. :-) Yes, poor material in that brand. I've got one from the 70's that was made in 'Murica and never an issue. Just gotta have clearance for the nut to go as it's splitting the scene, Maynard !
I've never used a nut splitter, they look useful(if you get a good quality one) in area's you can't get/take a torch. Generally speaking though I find that a torch and PB blaster/WD40 will work better.
those threads look very fine for the work their doing, poorly designed id say. as other said, premium is the only way to go here.. thanks for making the video, im looking at ways to get my rusted frame screws out ....without melting them
Does anyone know a premium heavy duty brand for a nut splitter? I've gone through like 4 already because they keep breaking on. I keep having to return the damm thing haha
Not to say Craftsman is Heavy Duty, but I saw a similar tool but different design. Maybe it works better. Have you Lube the Threads? Just Asking www.lowes.com/pd/CRAFTSMAN-Automotive-Nut-Cracker/1000595029?cm_mmc=shp-_-c-_-prd-_-tol-_-google-_-lia-_--_-mechanicstools-_-1000595029-_-0&store_code=2326&placeholder=null&gclid=Cj0KCQjwsYb0BRCOARIsAHbLPhEjtPqJjNofKdpnoLt5HmE85O60EM3tNR1bPAbbPVZbs_DHSm21T10aAmqzEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds
My steering wheel nut holds the world 🌎 on its axis. When I was changing steering wheels, I couldn't take ANY chances messing up those threads, I wish I never used so much force on a puller, I think I messed up a wiper stalk, anyway, slowly grinding that nut off with a dremel 🎉 I wish I did that FIRST! Micro engraving bits, etc. I almost bought a nut buster, I'm going to pass
One of your funnier tool vids. Slitters usually work better on rusted nuts. You can also help by hitting the side of the nut where the "splitter" goes with the angle grinder to encourage the split to start. Lastly, use an impact wrench to reduce the chance of busting yours.
Ooowww brudda....you have no idea how much im in need of this stuff!! Woooooohhhh man!! Hoooosshhhhh boooshhhhh man!! 20 years as an interrogation officer bruh, you dont waterboard & drown em informations into those really tough stubborn suspects. You split answers outa them.
I'm about to turn 19 with a daughter on the way, I'm glad I don't have one thats 12 yet xD but imma sub to Lawton Voss for support (most likely wont watch videos unless its of you lol)
maybe grease the threads on the tool, then lean on it with an impact haha. Should work better. Neat tool though. I might see if matco or snappy has one that isn't a million bucks.
LOL Throwing the kiddo in the intro mind #^*%* me for a second there..... well done sir (or "Daddy" in her case). Got two kiddo's (around same age) I'll be sure to tell... hell Ill sub just for support (why not). I use a impact of all things to bust a few nuts (no pun)... seriously though, impact and done... hits it so quick that the nut pops-"splits" quick as shit. I use cheap ass ones (got a bunch of them expecting breakage) and been lucky one hasn't broke yet doing it that way. When I purchased them I figure if they could take one stubborn nut off it would be worth to me. lol Nothing more I hate than things that won't come off-holding ya up ... so they been a life-head ache saver many times for sure.
yeah I probably agree with you. If the impact doesn't get it I tend to cut or plasma it off but I like to show everyone all the options that are available. Thanks for the support
60th sub, I should win a prize or some shit. Yeah, I usually end up cutting them off or whatever because the tool doesn't fit in most places i'm unfortunate enough to run into. I have used them as a half ass wrench for rounded off nuts also, just to break them lose. :)
Premium alternatives works like a charm ... get a premium one and re do this episode you'll be happy and people will understand the real benefits of this tool instead of trolling about failed attempt

The Fab Forums That's why i'm always watching your videos every time i notice it in my subscription page .. 👍
that nut was to big for that splitter it had nowhere to go, smaller stuff would work no problem.
The Fab Forums thank you! so glad it was legit! success's and failures. much respect gained!
Ahmed Ramadam can you recommend a brand
It's Friday fool and I broke this tool
Watts85af dude this has me lmao
Anti seize
Def get that nut off

I have one but never used it yet I bought it to take with me when I go to pull apart because no torches are alowed
great idea

Just use a hot wrench (cutting torch)
For the price it's worth a shot. My 11 year old daughter watches your daughters channel and I had no idea until today lol. Thanks Kyle!
awesome. I hear they work well...not sure what is up with the one I have.

it's Friday fool! you don't need this tool!
Yes. I've seen hack sawing the nut from the side. but some times you don't have room for a hack saw....or Dremel. and you risk cutting the threads.

i had a similar problem with my first pitman arm puller. i use anti seize on the new one every time and i haven't had the issue since.
yeah that's probably what I should have done
thanks, got the set of 4 (different sizes), the big one had to heat up with Map flame to be able to split
awesome

I’m looking for a decent splitter to break a 17mm off. What size is the nut in your demonstration? I’m ok with a one time use lol
Did you find one that works? It seems like they all get many bad reviews. I ordered the Craftsman one but I'm afraid it'll only work once and I've got two nuts to break.
I found this laying around and you answered my question thanks bud
Love those lifetime warranties 😂👍🏻

The handheld ones you typically have to split in 2 places when it doesn’t go all the way through
I've had limited success with them, some are better quality than others also. Success depends also on grade of nut/bolts. Cutting with grinder has always been easier and faster
Yeah I prefer just cutting them off as well but figured I would show everyone other options
I've had a few times where I stuck one on a extension and fed it in where a cutter wouldn't go and used a impact , worked like a charm. I think the speed of the impact is the ticket or I have just been crazy lucky as all get up.

Larn Davies there's nothing wrong with grinding but there's always other ways to get the job done if you know what I mean.

for sure
I've used nutsplitters for several years just on an industrial scale. From 1 1/4" nuts up to 6 1/8" nuts. Granite our nutsplitters our hydraulic
I have never seen one work any where you need it to , tight spots. Better to just use a air hammer and chisel if you don't have heat.

If your tool is a friend, it's a good thing. If your friend is a tool, it's not.
Does it work on a cap nut?
Bought one from AutoZone planning to split a castle nut that’s stuck on ball joint that’s seized
Good for non hardened nuts ,use cut off wheel on hardened nuts
Great to see your leetle one take a small role. :-)
Yes, poor material in that brand. I've got one from the 70's that was made in 'Murica and never an issue. Just gotta have clearance for the nut to go as it's splitting the scene, Maynard !
+Dwa Bac yeah for sure
it is enough strong to cut the bolt too?
Try grinding the nut down a bit first, oh a bit of copper slip on the tool thread first.
hey man just wondering if this will damage the thread after splitting the nut?
If the thread is intact, you shouldn't need to be splitting the nut anyway. Rather, just use a wrench and get it off normally.
Where can you by one, what store
I've never used a nut splitter, they look useful(if you get a good quality one) in area's you can't get/take a torch. Generally speaking though I find that a torch and PB blaster/WD40 will work better.
yeah for sure
Try the same thing again with a Snap-On NC52 Nut Splitter
he was high as fuck. Thats the healing of the nation keep up the good work.
thats on tool I already have. a must have tool.I have never had no prob getting nuts off.
lol
Will it work on lug nuts
no idea
Use an impact wrench next time it'll make your life easier great channel cheers
Thats awesome with your daughter . What a dad !
break line flange tool next Friday?
its on the list
wont fit on the nut inside my wheel though :(
those threads look very fine for the work their doing, poorly designed id say. as other said, premium is the only way to go here.. thanks for making the video, im looking at ways to get my rusted frame screws out ....without melting them
Needed to apply oil the tool threads
well at least they did not call it the nut buster.
Just Asking

excelente herramienta bien practica para cortar tuercas atascadas. saludos y gracias.
now what happens if you were able to move to the other side of the nut ?????????
My steering wheel nut holds the world 🌎 on its axis. the "fuck my shit up captain" tool lol
Voss lives in the real world just like us lol things dont always go right !
yes I do ! lol
Dude! I'm bummed! I went to look about a hat since father's day is approaching and they're all sold out! Gotta bring em back
+Tony Tully soon

Use an impact driver instead of a rachet
you don't need to split the nut. Deforming it is enough to free it
I was looking to crack some walnuts.
Took me a while to realize that's not what this video is about.
It’s enough that’s good tools
I've got nuttin to say about this tool ... great intro with Lawton tho !
thanks
I bought one for 12$ with the intention of breaking 6 nuts, If I get that job done it was well worth 12$.
generally they're used on old, shitty nuts, not new shiny nuts with better metallurgy.
yeah
Wow broke in the video but it’s a tool I must have lol.
Nut buster. !!! 😂😂😂😂
Glad you showed that it failed, cause that shit happens!
I prefer a torch, can't be tight when it's liquid!
Tiger tools nut splitter works
Ooowww brudda....you have no idea how much im in need of this stuff!! Woooooohhhh man!! Hoooosshhhhh boooshhhhh man!! 20 years as an interrogation officer bruh, you dont waterboard & drown em informations into those really tough stubborn suspects. You split answers outa them.

Thanks bro
Die grinder cut off wheel and five minutes works just as well
agree
maybe grease the threads on the tool, then lean on it with an impact haha. Should work better. Neat tool though. I might see if matco or snappy has one that isn't a million bucks.
I just looked it up on snapon.com; they want $105.00 for their manual one that handles nuts up to 3/4" across.
The threads and blade need oiling
And it will cut better
Need to grease the threads of the tool to make it last longer.
Yeah
Needs some acme thread on it, cool idea though
yeah
use it on both sides of the nut.
cool that you have your little girl in the video !!
she is rad
It's Friday fool and you need the stool.
I feel as if you should start a series of tool reviews
that what this is
Your supposed to do the other side but I get what you meant
It's hard to pay attention to what you're saying with the loud music playing. Just saying.
