No I think you're missing the point. Every machinist should know? We all already know how to cut, drill, tap, and polish parts. Nothing new here for us to learn
Why not to cut it using an agle grinder? Why not just hit it with a big hammer? The bearing will fly into pieces. Why not to drill-out a separator? Then you can move balls to one side and disassemble the bearing. Or is it just a joke for commenters like me? ; )))
You just need to remove the cage, then the bearings come out the same way they went in! The races destroyed in this video would have made good spacers for use around the workshop, not now.
I too am trying to figure out the purpose of this video other than ruining a bearing to make handles that are readily available! First I could have ruined the outer race far more efficiently and at lower cost that the consumables I saw used, say plasma torch for ten seconds? Content for the sake of content is getting really stupid.
I'll often salvage the balls out of bearings. They've come in handy for use as detents on springs, or projectiles for slingshots! I just remove the cage with a punch, slide all the balls to one side, and they come apart just as easy as they went together.
Quite a cool technique to showcase, milling with a lathe very cool. It’s a shame that the ball bearings used as handles as gonna rust in no time though
A few years ago a guy selling eye glasses online figured out that negative reviews boosted his search rankings as much as positive ones. So he started insulting his customers, gave poor customer service, etc., fishing for negative reviews, reasoning correctly that most people don't look beyond the numbers.
Nothing in the world is ever completely wrong. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day. This video also has positive points 😊 . You are only looking for fault
@@metallantik With the click-bait title you are wasting people's time who actually know something about machining. Same ill intent as the online eye glasses guy.
Honestly, I get it. If you want to play and try out things, utilizing materials you have on hand, you would do something like this. The whole process of cutting apart the bearing race on a lathe seems pointless and wasteful, but it's not about efficiency. It's about using your tools in all imaginable ways to know for sure what is good or bad as option. Everyone can speculate, but you never know for sure, until you do it. It's playtime, not who does what the best or most efficiently.
I wish I had read the comments before I watched. I thought I was actually going to learn something. I guess I did after all. Check the comments first BEFORE clicking on the play button. For that lesson, I thank you Metall Antik
Actually you can buy bearings at a supply house the ball bearing but you have to buy 50 or 100 all you have to do is take a punch take out the bearing separator that keeps the bearing the keeps the bearing separated and move the bearings to one side and the race will come out
As good as any way to get it apart I guess. Shows the ability to anneal something so it's machine friendly. My only experience with bearings, is cutting them off shafts, or out of the bore they're in. Oxy Acetylene, and a scarfing tip. Fairly surgical procedure to prevent damage to the parent metal on the shaft/bore.
I'm a NZ trade qualified fitter turner machinist with over 35 years experience in precision engineering and metalwork. I say that cheap nasty drill press isn't even worth the effort of customizing.
А что, имея под рукою токарный станок нельзя было выточить наконечники для ручек сразу?. Видно у специалиста мгого свободного времени, и он его так использует.

actually some of the 30 mm knobs were missing on my lathe a cuppla years back
Hahaha 😂😂😂exactly

Correct , thank you anyway 🙂

Was thinking the same thing!!

Why in the hell would you ruin a bearing when you can get individual steel ball bearings from hardware stores and online suppliers.
A Metabo .040 X 4.5 or 6 Disc would have been easy...

The bearing was no good. really?

I get the display of lathe skill but damn this job was a waste of time
😊
" too much time on my hands"...
Not everyone lives with overnight delivery and/or a shop with everything they need 2 mins away
Why did you show the bearing race in the chuck ? That is called deception.
you CANNOT be serious...the human race is spiraling...
What was wrong with the plastic knobs ?
Slow day
They weren't rusting fast enough.
No le gustaban las perillas negras al xenófobo
He now has a hundred and fifty dollars worth of time and energy put into a 25.00 drill press
A great way of making something you already had.
Surface grinder and 1/32 cut off wheel makes precise easy cut right through the case!!
For a real machinist it would be much faster to just free-hand a ball and finish it with a file and sandpaper.
👍❤️
He didn't have a grinder to cut the bearing. He definitely didn't have a ball turning jig.
I made a pinball machine for my kid 45 years ago using ball bearings like that, it worked out pretty nice for him

Nothing a little bit of oil won't stop.
@@adamdelarozza1985 There ya go! Who doesn't love an oily knob in their hand, you freaking knob? You know what doesn't need oil? PLASTIC!!!!
4:27 waste of time.
...that's what I thought too...(!)

You could have extracted ore from mines and made them instead, that would be easier
no heat needed to crack the bearings out
Actually you can buy bearings at a supply house the ball bearing but you have to buy 50 or 100 all you have to do is take a punch take out the bearing separator that keeps the bearing the keeps the bearing separated and move the bearings to one side and the race will come out
The ball race was worth more than the drill press
Why not just turn the spheres from some stock and make them the right size.
I used golfballs as handles om my drill-press !! 🙄😂
I replaced my chrome plated drill press handles with plastic knobs for plain stainless steel rods. You don’t need the knobs.
So, yeah, you might do this if that was all you had to work with.
Generally, cheaper and easier just to buy pre-made.
Чтобы разобрать подшипник нужно просто снять сепаратор отверткой и шарики снимутся в одну сторону
I prefer to use a die grinder with a chop saw instead of wearing out my lathe. And it's twice as fast.
An endmill would been a better option.
Every machinist already knows that, if they don't, they're not a machinist.
No angle grinders in that workshop ?.
OK everyone commenting its about the process.
And the process could have been to remove the cage and disassemble the bearing with no damage whatsoever ( :
Из пальца шаровой опоры гораздо проще
You do need a solid carbide saw for that.. why not just turn the outer ring in half with a regular insert?..
The slitting saw runout tho... 🙄😂
😁
And you can easily take a die grinder and cut the shells into much easier than what you did.
Thanks for subscribe ❤
You do realise that the original balls you took off could have had plastic removed and polished 😮😂😂
😁
Bravo Türkiye den selamlar 🎉
The handles worth more than the drill press!
Hate clickbait, won't be back here again.
I did this with 30 mm bals for my cazenueve hb575 lathe
If you want knobs for your drill press handles, maybe use that lathe to turn some? This "hack" you video'd seems like idiocy.
Продам информацию, как разобрать шариковый подшипник без газового резака. Я работал на подшипниковом заводе.

Oh, I see, the “technique” wasn’t about machining at all, it was a technique for killing time!
He went the long way around
Total time west bearing bolls remove from bearing cage without outer cage cut
But why heat forge it then cut it ? No understand !
He annealed it so he cut cut it. I still don't understand the reasoning for this whole operation. It's like he works for the US government.

Why not just use an angle grinder 😊😊😊
Just go the hardware store and buy 3 steel balls - better yet, they also sell plastic tapped balls made specifically for this purpose. DUH!!
Why buy a replacement part for $10 when I can make it myself for $100!!
I'd get those ball knobs from McMaster. I don't make anything that I can buy as a reasonable price.
Nice!
Expensive way to cut a bearing in half cutter won't last long
What was the point of this exercise? I don’t get it. The knobs on his drill press were perfectly ok as they were.😑
you can just rip apart the cage with a plier and disassemble the bearing by hand...
Das ginge mit einem Winkelschleifer einfacher.
What a wonderfull technique, indeed
Tout ça pour ça !
why didn't you just cut the outer rig of the bearing with the torch?? what was wrong with the plastic balls? to weak at 90 mph
What was the aim of this video? Is it to make a SS lollypop? What a waste of time?
...y de recursos
Cool setup, gave me an idea for my own setup since i don't have a mill. Idk y people are hating this , i like it. Thumbs up from me 👍
Thanks a lot ❤️
Good luck trying to drill a hardend bearing housing😢
Имея станок, можно было наточить шариков и не портить подшипник да ещё с такими сложностями.

A hammer blow on each side of the outside bearing race will snap it off quickly.
Really enjoyed what you did, I have great respect for the slitting saw. Well done, keep it up. Blessings from South Africa.
All this trouble to make a ball end? This is available as a hardware item.
Why not just chisel out the rivets, and chrome the balls when done?

Every machinist should know how to turn a ball. Total waste of time.
I would have had that cut in 2 minutes with a zip cut
Wow. You turned your lathe into a saw. My jaw is on the floor. (...yawn...)
if you want the balls you just rip or drill out the cage and then they just fall out
