I had superbikes for years then finally admitted to myself on the road they are pointless, so I got an MT07 so can really use it and let's be honest, the 0-70mph performance is almost the same on the road as a superbike so you don't really lose much, your riding skill easily offsets any spec advantage! I tried an R7 this year but I don't do track days, 99% of the time I'm below 80mph so the riding position on the MT is just a better all rounder. Yes, would be great to have the better front suspension on the MT and I have fitted sticker tyres on mine. Every year I test ride other bikes, nearly go for it, then have a word with myself and keep the MT!!
see i got the MT because it was more available compared to the R7, but the way I ride, it’s evident that I would prefer a super sport, but damn the the MT-07 keeps up on the motorway, city riding is just more comfortable
I took my mt07 for its first 1000km service. The salesman offered me to take the r7 for a spin. I came back, asked them to stop the service and just do an appraisal as I want to trade in the mt07 for the r7. The r7 is significantly more capable for my type of riding (hit the twisty roads on a Sunday). I am very, very happy with the r7. Not to mention it looks deadly in black. If you can handle the supersport riding position, get the r7.
Have a MT-10 and the wife has a R1. We love our liter bikes. We bought a MT-07 a few weeks back and I have to say it is a blast to ride. You can just throw it around, it’s very nimble. A good two up bike as well. The he kids like to go out with us so the reason for getting the 07. Looked at getting another 10, but so glad we went with the 07. Can’t wait to get through the break in period.
I took my first motorcycle lesson today, never even touched one in the past. For someone as inexperienced as me the MT07 felt otherwordly, I took it on the road already, what an amazing feeling!
I saw a pair of R7s in the wild and they both had aftermarket exhausts. Damn, these things really sound like a big bore Ducati with the 270 crank and loud exhaust. For a second my brain was confused because at a glance it looks exactly like an R1, so the big bassy twin sound was like a glitch in the matrix.
I got an MT 07 as my first bike and that thing is nuts but also very useful, i needed a bike get to work, but also something fun and an mt 07 2019 model with an akaprovic exaust got the best of both worlds, im still a newbie so even if i get a sport bike to have fun i cant really use the bike to the limit, im not even close to do that on the mt 07 so
I hated the new MT07 look but it has grown on me. If they made an SP version (I'm a sucker for nice suspension) I would buy one. At the moment I have a 1290 superduke but the power is just to much for the streets and its getting me in trouble someday.
I bought an MT-07 for my first bike, don't think I could've gotten anything better if I tried. I did consider the R7, but my back would snap clean in half after hitting a bump (the roads in my area are garbage)
@@Rolly28 it's a brilliant bike, really easy to ride. Insurance was just under £1100 for me (25, 6 years no claims on my car license at the time). They can be made A2 compliant if that's the license you have
I'm shocked that Yamaha didn't sort out the MT-07 suspension, brakes, and dash when they last updated it. I can't imagine buying a 2023 MT-07 when the Hornet, GSX-8S, and Trident exist. It now sits with the Z650 at the bottom of the entry-middleweight class.
I learnt to ride on an MT-07 and test rode an R7 a few weeks back. What an engine! The MT-07 was excellent to learn on really easy to get on with and fun but for me the R7 was better I prefer sportier riding positions and the flickability of the R7 had me leaning over more in my short time with it than I’ve ever managed on my ancient Suzuki which I’ve owned for months 😂 would love an R7 but being sensible I cant afford either of these new I just wish they’d released the R7 a while back so there would be some affordable used ones about like there are MT-07’s. Only minus points for me is the tiny fuel tank on both!
I'd really like to see Yamaha put all the R7 upgrades (better fork, brakes, slipper clutch) on the MT07. Eliminating the cost of the additional bodywork would result in a better overall value bike than the current MT07 (IMO) and may be something Yamaha ends up regretting not doing in response to the MT07's new higher performing competition (Hornet, GSX 8S, Duke 790).
They've obviously been trying to milk a cash-cow while putting minimal work into the bike's development. They'll now be forced to do something to make it more appealing with the new midweight naked options showing up.
That's probably what the next mt07 will get. Pretty sure the slipper clutch has been in the mt for a while now. If Honda Slaps out a cbr750r, the R7 will also have problems. Because the Hornet's got everything the Yamaha's got without the 180 rear wheel.
@Daniel won't buy it, unfortunately. Our insurance rates here work on displacement, and the new Honda puts it in a much higher category and makes it 50% more expensive to insure per month. Mt07 is the sweet spot for me.
It's a hard choice. I want the R7 because it looks great. It sounds great, but I know I will barely go on tracks and living in london. But do you go for comfort or how it makes you feel.
The fz07 / mt07 was really special when it was first introduced, but now for $400 more I'd go for the Trident and get better suspension, a slipper clutch, and ride-by-wire / riding modes.
I had the chance to sit on a 2022 honda fireblade 3 weeks ago and I felt like I was sitting or rather lying down on a mini bike. With my height and weight I have to have something with a more comfortable riding position
I am looking for my first bike, and honestly it's going to be between these two, and am strongly considering getting the r7, since the vast majority of my riding will be in the mountains where I live, no city riding or anything.
When the choice is between a markedly better looking all be more uncomfortable bike with better equipment and a less attractive yet more comfortable bike with okay equipment with all things being equal most riders will choose the first bike. In this case there is a significant difference in price. Here is where we seem to rationalize with the bang for buck and pick the first bike anyway. I see it all the time with strangers, friends and I do it too. So why fight it?
Just my opinion. Add USD fork, Brembo radial brake, hydraulic clutch lever and swap seat to closely match MT09 seat styling than MT07 is great banger bike.
The MT07 not having upside down forks like every other bike its going up against really lets it down and makes it seem old. at my age the ergonomics of the R7 are not for me.
well that's why the R7 sucks because it's just a MT-07R with a R7 badge. i ain't saying it needs allot of power but it should atleast have 90+ hp if it wants to claim it's a R7 which it ain't.
The MT-07 is a real fun bike and I like its looks but if you try to push it on B roads it ties itself in knots, IMO the ideal budget middleweight would be the MT-07 engine in a Trident rolling chassis.
In my country, R7 is 2500 Euro more expencive than the MT-07. That's not a small amount of money and therefore, for me MT-07 wins this. Same engine, much more comfy, cheaper.
A kitted out version of the pleb model would probably suit me best. Top box, screen for a bit of wind protection and a horny sounding pipe. Not too much power, too easy to pick up tickets for bad behaviour. Urban growler.

MT-07. Why would I want a supersport riding position without supersport power? Get a ZX-6R for around the same price. Much better bike.
You can't buy a new 600 cc supersport bike in Europe anymore 😭
600s are getting phased out. They just don't sell, which proves the ones that rave about them either don't buy them or buy them used.
