Its unclear whether or not Clive actually died based on the reoccurring themes in the game, the final side quests around Jill and Harpocrates, and Clive on the beach. His hand turns to stone but we don't see him actually die. He may very well be alive. The game leaves the ending ambiguous, with sacrifice being the face value interpretation.
The game tells us Clive always had a thing for books and he also was the only one who saw Ultima die. On top of that, Clive is taking the role of narrator towards the end saying "And thus our story ends." So what I'm thinking is Clive survived, maybe lost a hand, and took over Joshuas name as he did with Cid's name, and wrote that book in his name.
As the meteor disappeared, jill knows he he dead and they could feel the energy of each other. But whatever, the truth is, this story was just a fairytale. Nothing of this happened in real. The kids identified themselves with clive and Joshua maybe a reason why they looked similar. If you read a book, your fantasy is creating the chars and how they sounds and so on. The ending is even more great if you know that they just read a book and enjoyed it like a movie cause the only thing they got in this age were books and their fantasy.
@@CaptainKacknup if u write a book, with yourself in it, but your character is dying at the beginning, u still can write the whole story until the end or not ? If it was just a book, nothing of this what we've played, was real. It was the fantasy from this kid who just read a book
My take is the ending is open ended. Its up to player interpretation. If they believe clive died or not, there are many hints that support both opinion.
I’d like to think that Clive didn’t die and wrote the final fantasy book. (after taking his brother’s name) It’s in his character to take someone name as a way to honor them like he do Cid.
Ultima didn't create magic. His race discovered magic... Also Joshua didn't seal Ultima's spirit. He just sealed a portion of it or even its kin. Since main Ultima was in Origin. Also, it isn't Ifrit Risen that's seen in the murals. It's Ultima's real form. Wings are the proof. Ifrit Risen has different wings! Also Clive didn't die, he took Joshua's name as the pen side quest proves it.
@@notbambang how do you know? he didn't turn to stone or dust away like the other... when he reverts back to human he only had some blood in his head... he very well could've survived.... also Joshua... we don't know if Clive resurrection spell worked o not, he could've survived too after all, he is the phoenix... ending is open to interpretation
FF16-2: Clive apparently didnt die and is now EVIL having consumed all the power he is now basically unkillable and is now working together with SEPHIROTH.... now JILL and CLOUD must set on a journey to stop CLIVE and SEPHIROTH... (typical square enix lore)
If he didn't, then why does the game begin and end with Clives voice as if he is narrating the whole thing? And Joshua died so the book must be written by somebody else, somebody who saw ALL the events written, someone who likes to take on anothers name to honor them....
There are actually some pretty strong hints that Clive survives the ending, and he penned the book using Joshua’s name to honor his brother. The biggest hint is that Clive is the one who narrates the story, not Joshua.
Also the ambitions and reasoning of ultima are very similar to the ascians as villians in FF14. The whole destroying humanity so that they themselves can be whole again.
For the people arguing that Joshua is still alive because "who else wrote the book" gotta remember that he mentioned that The Undying are chronicling everything about his journey. The Undying wrote the book and slapped Joshuas name on it
Clive seems alive. He returns and marrying Jill with the coolest wedding ever held in Valisthea. He opens Chocobo ranch and workshop. Being a story writer too and spending the rest of his life together with Jill, Mid and Torgal
is it me or he didnt talk about metia dissapearing, which for me represents the end of magic, and jill after feeling his death, kinda smiles when the sunset rises again as she seems to see something in the distance, hinting that clive didnt die, and maybe joshua too was alive since he wrote the book
Ign tends to take things at first glance and doesn't even try to look deeper into it. If you want better explanations of the endings watch an actual gamer review the thing.
Jill sees the sun in the distance, a new dawn, which symbolizes another day and a new beginning. We have no confirmation of him surviving, only Joshua as Clive used Raise on him.
Metia was most likely a construct created by Ultima’s race. It ceased to function when magic ceased to be. Jill never felt Clive’s death; she simply felt the “death” of magic and knew something significant had happened. The rising sun signifies the end of Ultima and his spell of darkness. Jill was relieved to know Clive had won. None of this confirms he lived. We know he lived by the absence of any death scene, and the presence of the Final Fantasy book penned by him (in Joshua’s name, but isn’t Joshua literally a part of him now, meaning it’s just one more moniker amongst many he uses).
The fact that the world doesn’t have magic anymore would prove that the events did happen. Unless your saying the whole game in its entirety was fictional
Either way all the characters died in the end giving way to the “New Free world” scene with the two brothers playing and one wanting to be a bearer from the book. Clive’s and Cid’s future for the world happened
Joshua survived. Clive healed him and then Joshua had to survive to write the book at the end. The ending scene was to let us know that Joshua survived.
FF16: Another game where you fight for hours only to die (and make a woman cry at the end). Would've preferred a happy ending for all as a payoff, myself, but you do you, Square.
Okay, but the existence of the book suggests that Joshua lived even after the destruction of Origin! Right!? Which only makes sense for his character-after-all, he is the phoenix.
Clive is dead - he turned to stone which we learn throughout the game is what happens to bearers, in both main and side quests, over-using their magic powers. About Metia, in the Active Time Lore text it says that Metia is messenger of wish to the moon and heavens. Metia granted Jill's wish once when they were sleeping in Lady Hanna's barn and had a talk if they remember moongazing when they were kids/teens. Jill said that Metia granted her prayers , returned Clive to her, and the heavens must have a plan for them both - the star IS THERE and SHINING beside the moon. Now in the ending, the star FADES meaning it can no longer bring message(wishes) to the moon and it meant it can no longer grant Jill's wish. This is why she cried. Even Gav cried because he knew of Clive's fate and told the baby that his generation is now free (thanks to Clive and Cid). The new baby being born and the dawn symbolize new hope for the new generation, no more slaves. This is what Yoshi-P meant about hope. With this context for the ending, it's Jill forcing herself to smile for Clive so his death will not be in vain. It's bittersweet actually considering he promised to return... but didn't. The book "Final Fantasy" written by "Joshua Rosfield" at the epilogue doesn't have to be written by Clive or Joshua themselves. We have several side character scholars from Hideaway who are introduced as story collectors/archivers - they are Harpocrates and Vivian. We can also see them teaching a lot of kids and values the importance of history. It can be a biography of the people who wanted to preserve the legacy of the brothers and their gift of freedom. When you go to Harpocrates, it looks like Clive is telling him his story progress with the pixel art animation of old Final Fantasy games and Vivian is updating the lore as we move on. E.g. Jill is "traveling companion" in one of her text but was changed to "in love" if you reached a certain point. The story's main theme is - "Legacy" to pass it down through generations. We can only hope for DLCs for more conclusive end
Thank you Square Enix for a truly enjoyable Final Fantasy. As a long time fan, can say that 16 was a very worthy entry into the catalog. Up there with one of the best stories and battle mechanics in the series. Every main character had an enjoyable arch. Can’t compliment the main narrative enough!
100% the best character in this game is the Queen, she was a great antagonist with so much ambitions. They did her dirty, she was a better last boss than Ultima…
@@giiotm8272 Plotted the annihilation of her family, enslaved her older son, control of multiple kingdoms, just to die a pointless anticlimactic death. Now that’s Tragic
Her only ambition was putting a son on top of the empire but she didn't plan for anything going not her way, that's how Joshua potentially could have died and all her family died out. She's a pathetic wretch having only surface aristocracy to hide behind and it's fitting she died pathetically.
But Phoenix can’t bring anybody back from the dead, and Joshua has been long dead before that fight. Cid had a whole stone arm and he lived until getting hit with a laser
@@MisanthropyTECit's also Clive's left hand, and he's a right handed fighter. Also Joshua AND Clive both might/could both be alive and well - Joshua by Clive using the Power of Phoenix & Ultima Combined to create this Miracle - and Clive from Jill's prayer and wish to Metia - the star that flickers - perhaps granting her wish and saving him/them both
False Clive faked his death. If youve played the side quests Jill wanted to leave the area and spread her wings...now that everything is settled and Clive no long can fight because of his hand he then escapes into the night with Jill
@pigjedi Clive used Raise on Joshua to revive him, Clive says he’s not strong enough vessel to handle all this new found power, he uses the power anyway to destroy magic from world, he ended up dying from it like any other bearer/dominant over using powers

Loved the game and its story for the most part, but I’m a little disappointed in this game, alongside FFXV, embracing the kind of martyrdom that FFX so famously and categorically rejected. Especially with all of the side missions before the final stage so emphasizing living through this and returning home to their loved ones. It’s understandable that this didn’t happen, but still disappointing nevertheless.
@wiseguy240Winston Why do people on the he died side keep saying "you just got to accept" over and over. I'm of the opinion he died, but people don't have to accept jack. The ending is way too open to interpretation for the way people are trying to shut others down.
If the book is written by Joshua, it means that Clive saves him with the flames of the phoenix before destroying the mother crystal and lives to write the story
It still doesn’t explain the beginning of the game as to why Clive saw Joshua from the future and influenced Clive to transform into Ifrit and try and kill Phoenix!!! Not only that but why would Joshua even bother “contain” Ultima if Ultima was already actively influencing all of the events around them. All that really accomplished was making Joshua sick.
The hooded man at phoenix gate wasn't joshua from the future, it was ultima, ultima even says at that point "we have found you" The writers wanted to specifically confuse you with hooded man (ultima) and hooded dominant of fire (grownup joshua) in the beginning. It is later revealed in the end of the Titan arc that the hooded man was ultima, and was manipulating events in the shadows, it was he who triggered the events on phoenix gate, it was he who instigated drake's breath, and it was he that manipulated hugo kupka to consume vast amounts of aether all with the goal of grooming clive to absorb all of the others' essences to become a perfect vessel for ultima.
Ultima needed all of his forms to be complete, at the very last mission it is revealed that joshua trapped one of ultima's many forms, this delayed ultima to an extent that he wasn't able to claim clive as early as he wanted giving clive enough time to build his strength and will and was eventually able to repell ultima's influence even after joshua had perished and ultima made complete.
Technically speaking he only have the power of 7 Eikons or seven of the eight elements. Since Ifrit and Phoenix are two halves of one whole something they don't really explain why. And Leviathan is most likely going to be DLC content
Joshua mentions Leviathan in the game as the “lost eikon” or something like that. Idk where you heard about dlc but they’ve clearly stated they’ve zero plans to do more.
Clive Rosfield from Final Fantasy 16 is going to Dissidia Final Fantasy for PS5. Its sad to see that journalists like IGN fail to realize that Clive is not death. Its really not a big secret if you combine information from side quests with the simple fact that JRPG nerver kill main characters off screen.
you left out the part where after joshua "dies" it looks as if clive revives him and all his wounds disappear. we saw jill react to clive's death due to the eikonic senses but not joshua's.
@@wiseguy240Winston before going to the orgin do all harpocretes side quests, and also tô do the jill side quest, you need to do a series of side quest first, tô begin with, talk to jote at the nursery, after doing her side quest, joshua's side quest will be avaliable, after doing his sidequest, go to your Office and read his Letter and Accept his quest.
Whether he is dead or alive is left ambiguous. That way if they want to make more content with him they won’t have to jump through weird narrative hoops. They also want people discussing it, but Clive is dead in my canon because this game killed a lot of my enthusiasm for the brand. I’m glad a lot of people liked it, but some are really defending it tooth and nail as if any criticism of it is a direct attack on themselves. It’s pretty extreme and over the top.
For an explanation, it lacks some insights into the philosophical concepts of the characters. Especially as it is in some way a very heartfelt social commentary of todays zeitgeist.
This ending reminds me of Cowboy Bebop. Laid out on the ground and star fades away. Like is Spike (Clive) dead or alive, its left to the players or watchers. Im in the camp Clive survived though because of the side quest like people mentioned who else could have wrote that book. Also you didn't actually see his whole body turn white, it was just his arm.
Everyone in the hideout could write the book as all of them knew that Bahamut, Ifrit and Phönix fought against Ultima and in the end, won. It is written very open if none survived, both or only one of them. About the curse, yes we only see his hand but lets be real, what took several years with Cid, happens within seconds to Clive.
Some gods they are they can create humanity and turn themselves into mother Crystal but they can't prevent or undo the Aether deficiency that causes the blight.

His hand turns to stone but we don't see him actually die. He may very well be alive. The game leaves the ending ambiguous, with sacrifice being the face value interpretation.
The game tells us Clive always had a thing for books and he also was the only one who saw Ultima die. On top of that, Clive is taking the role of narrator towards the end saying "And thus our story ends."
So what I'm thinking is Clive survived, maybe lost a hand, and took over Joshuas name as he did with Cid's name, and wrote that book in his name.
Well he wrote a book called Final Fantasy. Hard to do when you're dead.
@@Chris.tian_
And how did Joshua describe Ultimas death when he wasn't even there when it happened?
@@CaptainKacknup if u write a book, with yourself in it, but your character is dying at the beginning, u still can write the whole story until the end or not ? If it was just a book, nothing of this what we've played, was real. It was the fantasy from this kid who just read a book
My take is the ending is open ended. Its up to player interpretation. If they believe clive died or not, there are many hints that support both opinion.
Everyone cried including Jill after the Origin crystal was destroyed, even the Dog realised Clive weren’t right
I’d like to think that Clive didn’t die and wrote the final fantasy book. (after taking his brother’s name)
It’s in his character to take someone name as a way to honor them like he do Cid.

Also Clive didn't die, he took Joshua's name as the pen side quest proves it.

it's an open ending, Clive may have survived, the discussion is just what the producer want
If he didn't, then why does the game begin and end with Clives voice as if he is narrating the whole thing? And Joshua died so the book must be written by somebody else, somebody who saw ALL the events written, someone who likes to take on anothers name to honor them....
Guetz used three phoenix down that Charon was hiding
So all are alive 🎉
There are actually some pretty strong hints that Clive survives the ending, and he penned the book using Joshua’s name to honor his brother. The biggest hint is that Clive is the one who narrates the story, not Joshua.
It wasnt him who wrote that damn book
@@nickyukvnClive didn’t save everyone in the second half of the game it was CID(Clive). Clive uses other people names, Clive wrote the book.

Also the ambitions and reasoning of ultima are very similar to the ascians as villians in FF14. The whole destroying humanity so that they themselves can be whole again.
They certainly love a bromance.
For the people arguing that Joshua is still alive because "who else wrote the book" gotta remember that he mentioned that The Undying are chronicling everything about his journey. The Undying wrote the book and slapped Joshuas name on it
Then why did Clive narrate it?
Clive seems alive. He returns and marrying Jill with the coolest wedding ever held in Valisthea. He opens Chocobo ranch and workshop. Being a story writer too and spending the rest of his life together with Jill, Mid and Torgal
really hope this is true.
Clive and Jill deserve happiness.
Absolutely. The chemistry between both of them is undeniable 👀🔥❄️
We need this to happen!!!
is it me or he didnt talk about metia dissapearing, which for me represents the end of magic, and jill after feeling his death, kinda smiles when the sunset rises again as she seems to see something in the distance, hinting that clive didnt die, and maybe joshua too was alive since he wrote the book
Ign tends to take things at first glance and doesn't even try to look deeper into it. If you want better explanations of the endings watch an actual gamer review the thing.
Yeah agreed. The video sounds so shallow, like it just literally described the ending, but not explained
Jill sees the sun in the distance, a new dawn, which symbolizes another day and a new beginning. We have no confirmation of him surviving, only Joshua as Clive used Raise on him.
Metia disappeared because her wish to have Clive return became truth.
We know he lived by the absence of any death scene, and the presence of the Final Fantasy book penned by him (in Joshua’s name, but isn’t Joshua literally a part of him now, meaning it’s just one more moniker amongst many he uses).
even your sibling will help you to save the world …. my expectation about the story of standard FInal fantasy ending was fullfill
To me the ending means Clive's adventure never happened it was just a work of fiction ie the final fantasy book written by Joshua rosfield

Okay, but the existence of the book suggests that Joshua lived even after the destruction of Origin! Right!? Which only makes sense for his character-after-all, he is the phoenix.
Yes, and why else would they show Clive healing him at the end?
Joshua survived and no one is understanding that.
Well said!
This or The Undying, they mention that they write about the Phoenix's deeds.

Joshua deserved a happy life.
In my opinion, Clive died and he was successful in reviving Joshua. Clive surviving while he's being consumed by the curse would make no sense.

Okay but what happened to the potions girl?
She's Leviathan in The Rising Tide DLC
It still doesn’t explain the beginning of the game as to why Clive saw Joshua from the future and influenced Clive to transform into Ifrit and try and kill Phoenix!!!
Not only that but why would Joshua even bother “contain” Ultima if Ultima was already actively influencing all of the events around them. All that really accomplished was making Joshua sick.
The hooded man at phoenix gate wasn't joshua from the future, it was ultima, ultima even says at that point "we have found you"
The writers wanted to specifically confuse you with hooded man (ultima) and hooded dominant of fire (grownup joshua) in the beginning.
