Just finished my first time GK'ing this adventure. Hats off! We had so much fun and made so many great memories. Throughly fun from start to end, and I think it may have warmed my partner up to TTRPGs... she agreed to join a session of the Halls of the Blood King. Thank you!
You enter the lair of the Goblin King, roll to resist the distracting bulge of David Bowie's Jareth. If your character fails, you are either horrified or intrigued for 1d4 rounds.
I've been playing Tabletop RPGs since the early 80s and love the Labyrinth movie. I spotted this yesterday at my local gaming store and nearly bought it, but decided to watch a video about it. It looks amazing for a pick up and play RPG on a whim. I'm definitely grabbing it.
Buy it as soon as you can, as it seems to have short print-runs. It's totally worth it. I've had mine shipped all the way to Argentina (where import taxes are crippling, and almost double the price of the book... but I still consider it worthy!!)
What's great about this is that, even if you don't want to run the game as-is, it's a great resource for taking fun encounters out of, for use in your own games.
When I first heard you say you were contributing to this book I was excited to see what you would come up with. Now after seeing you flip through it, I am beyond hyped. My copy is coming Wednesday and I can't wait to read through and convince my players to check it out.
I am very wowed by this... In awe really, it captures the beauty of the birth of rpg games inside peoples imaginations and borrows from immaculately evocative art of the IP. Stunning craftsmanship, not only of the physical features of the book, but the design, layout, and overall thorough understanding of the material. All these facts obviously belies their accurate intuition of how this world should "move". I cannot wait to get my hands on this. Just stunning.

PS: By the way, I loved the concept and interaction of the Simulacroom (no spoilers)!!!
Just got my copy a couple of days ago. It's fantastic! It's sorta like a mega-dungeon, but for gamers who are a little more focused on puzzles and storytelling, rather than the grittier details of dungeon crawling (which I also love). My favorite parts are the explicit invitations to change the rules, come up with your own characters, creatures, and scenarious, AND to continue the adventure beyond the Labyrinth, after the Goblin King has been defeated. It really is inspiring.
Patrick I'm not a gamer, but boy o boy I think I'm going to be! Hubby and kids are deep into DnD and always at me to join in.... This could be the perfect compromise for me!!
@@reneejordan9221 It's definitely worth it to try out! I started running RPG five years back and its a great way to flex the creative muscles and your storyteller side! Bought the recent "Conan the Barbarian"and "Alien"RPG's and have been running "Star Wars"for 3 years. PS:Running a one shot of "Alien"now. One of the players is definitely about to have a surprise...from their chest(they got a facehugger)and players already messed up by trying to remove it, which melted off the players arm(its going to be a big surprise when they wake up next session Wednesday!)

Looks amazing. I've always wanted to try Role Playing Games but have been intimidated by them. Now that there's a Labyrinth themed one I had to get it and will give it a try. I especially like the fact that it's a good introduction for beginners. My pre-order has finally shipped and will arrive next week. Can't wait.
I have to stop watching Ben's reviews, I keep buying stuff! This is perfect for my young nieces game they will love the whimsical nature of the adventure! You rock Ben!
I love David Bowie & Henson but bounced off Labyrinth, this looks more like 1001 Encounters, so useful.. and can definitely see how this would be amazing for first time & or even 1 on 1 play!
Funny I have _just_ finished vectorizing the character sheets to keep them as a PDFs after checking the website and only finding JPGs for those. And now I find out there's some text and some other details missing from the Goblin King sheet...
I bought the book and it is really amazing. In a lot of ways it is the exact book I ever wished the movie would be - If that makes sense. It is so detailed and interesting to skim for little vignettes or puzzles. I played it with my brothers, now that we are all damned to stay inside for "goblin king" knows how long. Great fun! The progression system is really interesting. I've got one question dough: are horned beasts and night trolls the same thing? It kind of seems like it, but I can not find an answer in the book.
The adventure portion actually looks pretty slick; and the time keeping aspect is something that I've always been curious about how to implement successfully. The book looks nice too, but is there a PDF of it?
I really like the structure of this book - it's something similar to what I use in my adventures which is essentially a bit more of a structured 'gardens of Ynn'. The only thing I find is that it does reduce player choice a bit as they just tend to move forward. I've done some flow charts to mitigate this a bit so they get a few more choices (Eg either go via The Swamps or via the Forest). But yeah the book looks great well done dude.
Overall this looks really interesting, but I can't get over the thing with the dice. It took literally just seconds to go from "it's a big wow factor" that "allows the creators of the book to include all of the stuff that you will need to play" to a recommendation that you "take the dice out and put them somewhere safe" on account of how the dice tend to leap out and roll away across the floor when you open the book! If you've put the dice away somewhere safe then the book isn't a complete play package any more, is it? Maybe dice-compartment gimmicks are rare for a reason; that's all I'm sayin'. :p
Yeah I really feel the dice holes are a terrible idea and probably compromises the integrity of each page too. If you find yourself in a situation where you have no bag, no pockets and both hands are full, and no room in either shoe, then maybe it's cool. I think I'll have to go with a pdf version so I can printout the pages without those holes. But love the rest of the book.

Tom,I had the exact same issue with my book - purchased from a different online retailer. I’ve read a few online comments (including the person who,did the review on rpg.net) indicating this issue as well. I think there is an issue with the binding glue that was used.
Just got this book since I was looking at something to introduce people to rpg gaming without throwing DnD at them, it is great, everything from the presentation to the little detail of the dices insert screams deluxe, my only gripe about it system wise, is that it really isn't meant for more than 2 or 3 sessions, there is no character progression and, quite frankly, no reason to make a deeper, more involved story and thats ok since this is very much an entry level book. Last thing is the dust jacket, I don't know what was the reasoning behind it but covering such a beautiful cover with that hideous piece of paper is a crime in my opinion.
